The Dynamiters
aka The Gelignite Gang. An American insurance investigator helps police to search for members of a criminal gang who use explosives to commit their robberies. This is an enjoyable British B-movie crime thriller from director Francis Searle who made scores of these low budget movies from the late 40's right up until the early 60's. The story has a criminal gang posing as busking musicians in the vicinity of where they want to rob. They alert their accomplices to any danger from the police by changing their tempo from slow to fast and from fast to slow again when the danger has passed. Quite an amusing scene to watch. Performances are good from the entire cast. If you get the opportunity one day to watch it be sure to give it a go.

Where There
This movie is not to be confused with the one starring Will Hay. It concerns a cockney family from London who have inherited a run-down farm from a dead uncle which comes complete with it's own housekeeper. The head of the family wants to have a go at farming even though he has no experience whatsoever whilst the rest of them only see pound signs in their eyes and want to sell everything to the highest bidder. This is a charming fish out of water comedy based on a play led by the great Leslie Dwyer with George Cole again with a role as a spiv (but nothing like Flash Harry). It marks the first ever appearance of Edward Woodward as well. Dandy Nichols (of From Death Us Do Part) rounds up the main leads. The comedy is very gentle and has mostly the family members arguing with each other of what they want to do with the farm. It's one of those comedies to watch whilst lazing away on a wet afternoon. There's no big laughs to be had here but it's amusing seeing the city folk trying to handle country life.

Shepherd on the Rock
A stubborn shepherd Tam refuses to sell his patch of land to the ruthless new Laird who has plans to redevelop the area for his own greedy gain. He sends his heavies over hoping to force Tam to give up the land and even threatening his woman who runs the local shop in the village. This is a movie with a familiar tale - that of a small person taking on the might of somebody with power and money. Tagged as a family movie there are several scenes which definitely isn't child friendly when Tam is beaten up by the Laird's goons and also when Tam's dog is murdered by the same people and forcibly drowned in a river (you don't see this happening, just the aftermath when Tam discovers his dog's corpse). Bernard Hill is great as the proud traditional shepherd who refuses to be bullied around even as others in the village are swayed by the Laird's promise of making them rich. Betsy Brantley and Hill make for a likable couple and you definitely want them to win their battle. So whilst this movie and it's story aren't original, the beautiful Scottish cinematography and acting by the main cast make this an entertaining one to watch.

Millennium
Two planes collide in a mid-air crash and it's up to an investigator to find out what really happened. He stumbles upon a odd device in the wreckage that convinces him that something strange took place. A mysterious woman eventually reveals that she's from the future and has been taking people from the airplanes before the strike as the human race is dying. What sounded like an interesting and intriguing plot on paper didn't materialise by what I saw onscreen. The science fiction and mystery elements are unfortunately made nearly worthless by the awful pacing, crappy effects, poor dialogue and worst of all, the silly romance plot which takes up a lot of the time. The look of the future is great and the scarred elders held alive in huge tubes were cool. Kris Krisstoferson and Cheryl Ladd are OK in the roles but I liked the robot Sherman better than them. The ending is terribly cheesy. The filmmakers botched this movie up big time. It could and should have been far better than this.

The Sandwich Man
Michael Bentine is Horace Quilby, a kind and friendly sandwich board man who walks around London advertising a tailor shop and meeting various eccentric people of all colour and creed. It's basically a variety of sketches on various characters which are linked by Bentine - some are quite humourous (a demented sit-on mower with a mind of it's own) but others are painfully unfunny. The cast is a who's who of 60's UK comedians which includes Norman Wisdom, Harry H Corbett, Bernard Cribbins and Terry Thomas. Other people popping up is future Dr Who villain Roger Delgado as an Arabian carpet seller. The movie has been filmed entirely on location in central London and is a valuable time capsule on how things were during the time. As a gentle comedy it's a bit hit and miss but I still enjoyed it.

Killing Ground

Killing Ground
A young couple go camping in the Australian Outback and find an abandoned tent with no clues where the occupants have disappeared to. They soon find two local rednecks with guns have come to hunt and kill them. Quite a harrowing survival movie although the plot has been done many times before. It doesn't mean you have to ignore this movie as it's still good. There are flashbacks to the inevitable doom of the family in the abandoned tent which includes a shocking killing of an infant boy. There are other brutal deaths at the hands of the rednecks. Harriet Dyer is great as the female heroine who goes through a horrible ordeal until she extracts her own revenge. The movie is shot well and the atmosphere is sufficiently chilling. All in all, a nasty and gritty Australian horror which although not original in it's plot is still worth seeing.

Love Live! The School Idol Movie
Continuing from the great anime series, the school idol group u's (spoken as Muse) travel to New York City to promote the 3rd Love Live concert in Japan. After returning back home, they find their popularity is bigger than ever but have a hard decision to make. After the third year girls graduate from school, the band must either disband for good or carry on. They also prepare to hold a big school idol concert in Akihabara with their rivals A-Rise and other up and coming school idol groups. A satisfying conclusion to the first Love Live saga even though it continues with new characters in Love Live Sunshine. It's basically just a long goodbye to the group with the members accepting the end is nigh but realising that stopping being u's does not mean their friendship will finish. All of the idol group members get a chance to shine and there are plenty of insert songs dotted throughout the movie to tap your toes to. Don't expect any deep and meaningful message to come out from this movie. It's just a cheery and innocent movie to celebrate idols, their music and friendship with characters you can't help but root for.

American Made
Tom Cruise is back on form in this superb true life tale about Barry Seal, a man who worked for both the CIA and the Colombian drug cartels before his luck ran out in the mid 80's. This may not be a blockbuster action movie but it holds up on its own firmly with the help of great direction by Doug Liman who previously worked with Cruise on Edge Of Tomorrow. The story goes at a fair pace and never slows down from start to finish. The 2 hours flew by so quickly and you never feel bored by the storyline. Tom Cruise is fantastic and it was great watching him immerse himself in the crazy world of Barry Seal. The sets, costumes and music make the viewer feel that they are back in the late 70's/early 80's. American Made is a fascinating biopic about a larger than life character. The movie benefits greatly from Cruise's committed performance and Liman's lively direction to provide an entertaining take on an unbelievable true story.

Ben chu jiang hu lu
A great kung-fu warrior Chen Wai who has beaten several rivals and has many enemies is made powerless when his hair (which can apparently create a hurricane!!) is shorn off by his girlfriend when her mother is kidnapped. Chen Wai runs away and hides in a temple where he has to wait 7 long years until his hair and power can return. Chen's enemies haven't forgotten about him and track him down for a final showdown. This is a low budget Taiwanese kung fu actioner. It starts off pretty good but sags badly in the middle before finishing with a bang as Chen squares off against his deadly rivals. The English dubbing at times is hilarious and naturally director Godfrey Ho can't help but steal Western music to add to this movie. He uses a lot of dramatic Battlestar Galactica music here! The fight choreography is decent but the slow motion in the middle of fights doesn't help at all. It's not the greatest martial arts movie you'll ever see but it's fine if you want to while away 90 mins.

Tread Softly Stranger
After being forced to flee London because of debts, Johnny Mansell returns to his home town to move into a flat next door to his brother Dave and his girlfriend Calico. Dave has embezzled his employers of ยฃ300. Calico suggests a plan to rob Dave's workplace and to steal enough money to cover his fraud but things go horribly wrong. A very well made British noir movie with Diana Dors at her sizzling and sultry best as a femme fatale who comes in between the 2 brothers. The plot is tense and gripping especially after the botched robbery and the net is slowly closing in on the pair. George Baker and Terrence Morgan play the Mansell Brothers who are about as different as brothers can get. Whilst Johnny can play it cool under pressure, Dave is the more nervous and wound up with questions being asked about their whereabouts during the time of the robbery. It all culminates into a satisfying ending to the movie. Brilliant acting from the whole cast. An entertaining and interesting movie which comes recommended.

Undercovers Hero
aka Soft Beds, Hard Battles. Peter Sellers is in multi character mode in this movie and playing 6 roles including Adolf Hitler. The story is set in a brothel in Paris, France during WWII with the prostitutes helping the resistance and an American and English soldier trying to save Paris from being blown up by the Gestapo. It's well known that this isn't one of Sellers' best movies and it's been criticised by many but honestly I can say it's not that bad at all. Sure, it's not a riotous comedy and laughs are few and far between (the death by farting is one instance) but for some reason I liked it. Maybe having a cast of beautiful women which includes Jenny Hanley and Rula Lenska helped! Sellers plays a couple of Germans, a Frenchman, a British officer and a Japanese Prince. Overall, an enjoyable romp but don't expect to be laughing your heads off whilst watching it.

The Beachcomber
A drunken man Ted who has been banished from England and is sent to a tiny British colony on a small island gets into trouble with the new Governor for his wild behaviour but slowly and surely starts to change over time with help from a Welsh female missionary Martha Jones. Great acting from the cast which includes Donald Sinden and Glynis Johns. Donald Pleasance would be crucified in this day and age for blacking up as an Indian man. Surprisingly enough an elephant is another star of this movie and we see a duel between him and a crocodile which ends with the elephant trampling it to death in the water. He also gets involved in the climax. The plot gradually gets serious in the second half when a cholera outbreak threatens to kill the residents of the island and it's up to Ted and Martha to find a cure. This is a pleasant enough movie with nice cinematography of an island somewhere in the Indian ocean. Good to watch on a rainy afternoon.

A Kid for Two Farthings
Set in London's Petticoat Lane Market, this slice of life movie follows the lives of several characters living and working in the area. With a great cast which includes Diana Dors and Irene Handl you'd think this movie would be a winner but somehow it never quite gels. The title refers to a child character and his quest to buy a unicorn to bring his family and friends luck. He ends up with a goat instead. The kid's performance and dialogue are a bit annoying at times. I found the storyline to be rather dull and uninteresting and didn't really care for any of the characters. The only bright spot is seeing a part of London which is now sadly gone. Rather disappointed overall.

Life
Life is an average horror/alien movie with a good cast and well shot visuals. It is not a masterpiece especially considering that there are other similar movies much better. The movie carried a good amount of intensity and suspense and was gory and terrifying at times. The performances were quite good, the cast is pretty great though so there was no surprise there but it did fall flat in writing though, not that it was poor but it's a very straight forward and rather clichรฉd stuff that we've seen many times even though it was indeed well done. I did like the ending though. In summary, it's a moderately entertaining watch of a story that's been told countless times before.

Seoul Station (2016)
Many think this is a prequel/sequel to the South Korean zombie blockbuster Train To Busan but it isn't even though both are written by the same person. This was made before that was a huge hit but they didn't release it as anime movies tend to do poorly in South Korea. Of course once Train To Busan was a success, this was then released to cash in. Both have a similar plot in that a zombie outbreak occurs and several people do their best to survive during the confusion and mayhem that occurs. The animation is not up to the high Japanese standards many have gotten used to seeing. Characters tend to look rather ugly but don't hold that against the movie itself. It is action packed, exciting and terrifying at the same time. There's even a social commentary about how the South Koreans tend to look down towards the homeless in the story. There are enough interesting twists to keep you engaged until the end which is rather dark. As a companion piece to Train To Busan, this is a good grim apocalyptic horror anime which is worth having a look if you enjoyed the other.
