Torture Garden
Sideshow psychic Dr. Diabolo predicts the horrific futures of some curious fairground visitors. Wealthy Colin finds himself compelled to murder. Ruthless actress Carla discovers that movie stars have a shocking secret. Lovestruck reporter Dorothy does battle with the spirit of her beloved's dead mother. And greedy Edgar Allan Poe collector Ronald finds out a horrifying truth about his idol after murdering a rival. This is the 2nd anthology horror movie made by Amicus. This isn't their best but it's still entertaining even though the stories are uneven. Story 1 and 4 are easily the best. Story 2 is pretty stupid and story 3 is just ridiculous - the good acting keeps it from completely falling apart. There's very little blood or violence here and the "twist" ending comes as no surprise. Good acting from the majority of the cast with Burgess Meredith and Jack Palance standing out. A good time waster overall.

Absolute Power
While robbing the home of aging billionaire Walter Sullivan, Luther Whitney is interrupted by an amorous couple entering the building. As Whitney hides, he sees Sullivan's young wife, Christy, and the U.S. President, Alan Richmond. When their affection turns violent, Christy is killed by the Secret Service. Although Whitney flees, he is framed for the murder. Now, he seeks justice with the help of detective Seth Frank. This movie has one of the best premises of any thriller I've ever heard of. It's directed by the star of the movie in Clint Eastwood. The first 30 minutes of this are spectacular. Eastwood's simple, straightforward style of direction is perfect in laying out the setting and action that occurs. As he starts to run with Secret Service, police and assassins chasing him, the plot goes a little awry but never into B-movie material. Eastwood is too reformed to be ridiculous and though some scenes may seem too unbelievable or outlandish, they are handled with professionalism so as to make us think they could happen. The cast is outstanding. Eastwood delivers as the smart and slick jewel thief you cannot underestimate, Gene Hackman is good but very underused as the scumbag president, Ed Harris is solid as the fervent police detective and Laura Linney is wonderful as Eastwood's estranged daughter who has serious trust issues with her father. In the end, it may not be one of Clint's best movies but it is a very smart and fun thriller that has its head in the right place.

Terminator: Dark Fate
Sarah Connor and a hybrid cyborg human must protect a young girl from a newly modified liquid Terminator from the future. If you've seen the previous Terminator movies in this franchise, don't expect anything different. There is absolutely nothing new. It's the same story and same plot, except with a female ensemble. Writers, producers, and directors seem to think they can give characters with women or minorities and sell us the same the movie all over again. How stupid do they think we are? I actually sorta liked the first hour of the movie then it went downhill and it was too OTT with the action scenes. The acting is good and it was nice to see Linda Hamilton back as Sarah Connor. It's only just slightly better than the last couple of movies but nowhere near as good as T1 and T2. I'm afraid to say this movie is a big misfire and hopefully they'll end the franchise once and for all.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil
Maleficent travels to a grand old castle to celebrate young Aurora's upcoming wedding to Prince Phillip. While there, she meets Aurora's future mother-in-law -- a conniving queen who hatches a devious plot to destroy the land's fairies. Hoping to stop her, Maleficent joins forces with a seasoned warrior and a group of outcasts to battle the queen and her powerful army. The first movie did some good business to justify a sequel but I suspect there may not be another one. The effects are fine but the script is a mess. The photography is very dark at times and the surprising enjoyment from the first movie isn't present in this one. The cast perform well with Angelina Jolie sparkling as she did in the first movie as Maleficent. For the target audience, this movie ticks all the right boxes but for myself it was just another average Disney production. In the end it's just an OK movie and far from memorable.

Joker
Forever alone in a crowd, failed comedian Arthur Fleck seeks connection as he walks the streets of Gotham City. Arthur wears two masks - the one he paints for his day job as a clown, and the guise he projects in a futile attempt to feel like he's part of the world around him. Isolated, bullied and disregarded by society, Fleck begins a slow descent into madness as he transforms into the criminal mastermind known as the Joker. This backstory about the Joker's origins is good but not the 'movie of the year' as some like to point out. Joaquin Phoenix did his best, tried hard to embody the magnanimous character of Joker, he did pretty well, but sometimes it felt he was just trying too hard. Despite it's unfair to compare him with Heath Ledger I must say he was able to pull it off impressively and takes this Joker to a distinct level. The main problem with this movie is the lack of originality and a precise plot, sometimes it felt like the movie itself was confused and wandering aimlessly! Overall, despite its shortcomings, I enjoyed this movie a lot and it's definitely worth checking out.

Death Wish 4: The Crackdown
Paul Kersey, who is no stranger to vigilante justice, is pulled back into the underworld of Los Angeles when the daughter of his new girlfriend, Karen, dies after an overdose of crack cocaine. Intent on seeing justice served, Paul goes after the kingpin who ultimately supplied the crack. As he hunts down the kingpin's minions, Paul starts taking out a large part of the city's drug-dealing population on a violent killing spree. This is a surprisingly entertaining entry in the series, despite not being directed by Michael Winner who worked on the first 3 movies. Instead of having Kersey just killing muggers and rapists, he takes on an entire drug underworld in a reasonably clever way, by setting up rival drug mobs against each other. The paranoia and confusion between both the drug mobs is exciting and somewhat funny to watch, and the action this time is a little lighter than the 3rd movie but that's balanced out with clever set pieces, suspenseful moments and funny one liners delivered from both Charles Bronson and the supporting cast. A good fun movie for action fans.

The Night Visitor
Wrongly convicted criminal Salem escapes from a mental institution hoping to get revenge on the man who put him there, his brother-in-law Anton. Driven genuinely insane by his time in the institution, Salem plots to commit a series of crimes to frame Anton. Caught up in this murderous scheme is Anton's wife, Salem's sister Ester. The three are thrown together, and the couple must outfox the madman in order to survive. This obscure USA/Sweden co-production has a tale of madness, desperation, revenge, and sinister murder. The movie's chilly, snowbound northern setting (Jutland) is as much a character as the cast themselves, and the story certainly has a unique feel to it: slow, stately, very much like an art-house movie, but with dark revenge/thriller plotting. The movie is also notable for an exemplary cast with Max Von Sydow on top form as the madman Salem with Trevor Howard as a detective. This movie certainly isn't for all tastes and some might even find it a little odd but I found it quite spellbinding at times.

Hundra
The sole survivor and the most powerful of a female tribe of warrior breeders journeys to find a suitable mate. This is a very nicely produced eighties sword and sandal epic that produces its share of entertainment on various levels. Yeah, the entire concept is kinda dumb but its actually one of the better Conan type movies made in that era. The costumes look pretty decent and the on location filming is a big plus. Surprisingly, the fight scenes are better done than one would expect. Laurene Landon in the title role is pretty hot, athletic, does lots of stunts and pulls them off nicely. There isn't much need for acting here so we won't go there. If its slightly campy action and adventure you crave...you could do a lot worse than Hundra.

Flame in the Streets
A union boss fights racial discrimination in his job but has to face up to his own deeper prejudices when his daughter falls in love with a Jamaican teacher. This movie is a very enjoyable and courageous one about racism in London in the early 1960's. It presents an interesting scenario for the union rep played by the great John Mills who champions the cause of the black people for their hard work at their factory but he changes his mind when he discovers his own daughter wants to marry one of them. The daughter's mother is truly vile in the way she talks about black people and shows herself to be a shameful mother. Things come to a head during a fireworks bash when the local troublemakers start picking on a black man in a car and it gets out of hand quite quickly. Unlike the American counterpart 'Guess Who's Coming To Dinner', this doesn't pull any punches and really shows the ugliness of racism. The cast all give great performances especially the beautiful Sylvia Syms as the daughter. Wilfrid Brambell of Steptoe & Son fame has a small role with a blink or you'll miss it cameo by Barbara Windsor. Well worth seeing.

Blinded by the Light
Javed is a Pakistani teenager who experiences racial and economic turmoil while living in Luton, England, in 1987. He writes poetry as a way to escape the intolerance of his hometown and the stubborn views of his traditional father. When a classmate introduces him to the music of Bruce Springsteeen, Javed sees parallels between the singer's powerful lyrics and his own working-class environment. Springsteen's melodies soon inspire Javed to find his own voice and follow his dreams. This is the kind of movie that wears it's heart on it's sleeve. It has no problem being a little silly and even it's most serious subject matter never feels too heavy. This is a feel good movie through and through that uses it's more dramatic elements as a backdrop, not just for Javed's story, but the story of a society facing a tough economy, with job losses and racism against immigrants. The movie touches on numerous subjects, from tradition and family versus going after one's dreams, to the economic woes that many faced during this time in the UK. It's all balanced well, if it lacks nuance. But it's hard to ignore the spirit of the movie, a spirit that translates Javed, his friends, and their families from the lyrics of Springsteen's music, a perfect combination that shows that it wasn't just America that could relate to his music, but anyone facing these same hardships. Excellent acting from the whole cast. Blinded By The Light may not come off as the most memorable movie of the year, but it's certainly worth going to check out.

Yesterday
Jack Malik is a struggling singer-songwriter in an English seaside town whose dreams of fame are rapidly fading, despite the fierce devotion and support of his childhood best friend, Ellie. After a freak bus accident during a mysterious global blackout, Jack wakes up to discover that The Beatles have never existed. Performing songs by the greatest band in history to a world that has never heard them, Jack becomes on overnight sensation with a little help from his agent. I consider myself a big Beatles fan so I was so excited for this movie. It exceeded my expectations. Is it a perfect movie? No, absolutely not. But in an age of superhero movies and musical biopics, to have such an original idea be brought to life about a band that is seemingly larger than life was a joy to watch. It is undoubtedly the two main leads in Himesh Patel and the lovely Lily James that turns this from a solid to a very good movie as they have such great chemistry together. The movie also reminds you how timeless the Beatles' music is, being a fan I have to say you come to re-appreciate the genius of Paul, George, Ringo and John. If you are not a Beatles fan (how can you not be?), the movie will undoubtedly lose some of it's effect and charm, but it will still carry itself through guest appearances by Ed Sheeran and some funny sequences. Overall it's a brilliant feel-good movie that is paired with some of the greatest songs ever written! Definitely watch it!

It: Chapter Two
Defeated by members of the Losers' Club, the evil clown Pennywise returns 27 years later to terrorize the town of Derry, Maine, once again. Now adults, the childhood friends have long since gone their separate ways. But when people start disappearing, Mike Hanlon calls the others home for one final stand. Damaged by scars from the past, the united Losers must conquer their deepest fears to destroy the shape-shifting Pennywise - now more powerful than ever. This movie is overhyped and overlong! The first hour was mostly OK, casting was spot on, they all had great chemistry together. Though the first scene was nonsensical in the story of Pennywise from what the first movie established. However the last 90+ mins just dragged on and on and it made me nearly fall asleep. Firstly they should've minimised flashbacks, instead they dedicated long sequences that added nothing. Pennywise was laughable and not scary in the slightest. The plot was so boring it felt like it was ripped from a bad 90's horror movie and the way Pennywise was ultimately defeated had me cringing. A poor sequel in the end.

Ready or Not (2019)
Grace couldn't be happier after she marries the man of her dreams at his family's luxurious estate. There's just one catch - she must now hide from midnight until dawn while her new in-laws hunt her down with guns, crossbows and other weapons. As Grace desperately tries to survive the night, she soon finds a way to turn the tables on her not-so-lovable relatives. This tries to be a mixture of a comedy and a horror movie and fails at both. The movie is never atmospheric, intense or scary enough to be a great horror movie. The movie is never clever, surprising or vibrant enough to be an entertaining comedy movie. Even by poor b-movie standards, the story of this film is completely ridiculous. It's not all bad though. The settings look great and especially the mansion where the sinister hide and seek game takes place is really gorgeous, including hidden hallways and elegant gardens. The movie features a few intense action scenes that make you root for the desperate lead character. The movie has a fast pace and doesn't overstay its welcome with plodding storytelling. Lead actress Samara Weaving does her best with a poor script and has enough charisma to be the only great actress in this movie. Overall it's just a shallow action movie with a few gore elements.

Fixed Bayonets!
During the Korean War, an entire division of soldiers is forced to withdraw down a mountain, with a few dozen troops left behind to fend off enemy forces. One of the platoon members, Corp. Denno, is reluctant to end the life of another person, but, as soldier after soldier falls, he must learn both how to kill and how to act as a commanding officer. In addition to facing enemy troops, Denno and his remaining men have to contend with an icy descent down treacherous terrain. Director Samuel Fuller had fought in the Second World War and put his field experience to good use in directing this low budget movie set in Korea during the Korean War. There is some good acting and a lot of grit in this simple war movie, which concentrates on this small body of men and their struggle against the odds. The movie title refers to the time when close combat is at hand, and soldiers have to fix bayonets to the ends of their rifles to defend themselves against the enemy, as firing is no longer possible because the enemy is only a few feet away. The studio certainly built an elaborate set for all the action. It's one of the more impressive of the period and allows Fuller a lot of unhampered camera movement to film the continuous action. He did very well with the low budget he got and should be congratulated for his effort. A great Korean war movie.

Air Force One
Enroute back to the States from Russia, Russian Nationals hijack the President's plane and hold him and his family (as well as most of his staff) hostage aboard Air Force One in order to release a captured General. A very clichรฉd but interesting movie with a two-fisted President of the United States played by Harrison Ford literally taking on terrorism himself on board his jet, Air Force One. It's a story that hooks you in and keeps you involved all the way. It could have been trimmed down but the better-than-average action scenes help make up for that. And although Wolfgang Petersen does a nifty job of directing, turning the President of the U.S. into an action hero performing stunts that seasoned stuntmen must have been hired for, does stretch credibility a good deal! Not bad as an action thriller.

The Terrornauts
An observatory is transported to an asteroid after sending signals to it, where scientists discover strange beings who intend to destroy the earth. This turns out to be one of the cheapest and silliest British science fiction movies ever made. It is embarrassing to watch. It's a low budget production with wobbly sets and production values which are far below par. It actually looks cheaper than the episodes of Doctor Who that they were shooting at the same time. The special effects are so bad you'll laugh at them. The Robby the Robot rip-off that rolls and wobbles all over the place as well as the dodgy explosive effects and the green-skinned aliens who look like they're wearing bath rugs on their heads are pathetic. The cast turns up a few faces of interest, most notably Charles Hawtrey and Patricia Hayes who make up a kind of comic double act to comment on the action. If you want to watch an unintentional comedy then give this a whirl. Otherwise you really need to give it a wide berth.

Hammer the Toff
Upper class sleuth The Toff tries to help a young woman Susan reunite with her missing uncle who's been targeted by criminals that are after his steel formula. Previously thought to have been a lost movie, this is a very well made low budget crime drama revolving around the Honourable Richard Rollinson aka The Toff. The character is basically like The Saint and is probably a rip-off considering he has a sigil like him as well (a top hat, monocle and cigarette holder). Considering that there were 60 novels about The Toff, it's a shame that only 2 movies were made about him (this one and it's sequel Salute The Toff). The storyline in this movie is exciting and has a fast pace to it as The Toff comes up against an East End Robin Hood like figure called The Hammer. I was engrossed in the plot and it ends with a satisfying finale as the criminal is apprehended by the police. John Bentley makes for a likable hero with the beautiful Patricia Dainton as the damsel in distress. I really hope to see the sequel one of these days.
