Jazz Boat
Anthony Newley is Bert, a young electrician who gets mixed up with a gang of hoodlums who steal some jewellery from a shop. The mix of comedy, drama and music doesn't gel well together and whoever gave useless comedian Bernie Winters a role in this movie made a big mistake. His presence and tiring comedy routine gets irritating quite quickly. The second half of the movie is mostly a chase as Bert and his friend The Jinx are on the run from the hoodlums and along with a police inspector find themselves on the Jazz Boat. There are some musical numbers belted out from some unknown French crooner and Newley himself. The one highlight from this movie is the gorgeous Anne Aubrey who sizzles on screen. It's a fairly good timepiece of the era as 3 years later this whole jazz scene would be swept aside by the beat groups and a certain 4 piece band from Liverpool!

A blazing car crashes over a cliff. No body is found. It belonged to a co-owner of a business. Both owners had recently taken out large insurance policies. The insurance company is naturally suspicious and send an agent to investigate. This is a great little British thriller with a subtle comic flavour to allow it to stand out from the rest. Although it has the same low budget, ensemble cast feel as many other films from Butcher's Film Studios, it's the wry understated humour which centres around the central character's miserliness which makes it special. The storyline is rather familiar, but the Brighton locations and occasional shots of the wonderful Seven Sisters cliffs give it an edge. The dependable Peter Vaughan is excellent as the insurance agent who succeeds in solving the crime where the police have failed. Overall this movie is a well-made, well-written, well-acted low budget movie which deserves to be seen.

The Browning Version
In a British school, the conservative and emotionless Latin teacher Andrew Crocker-Harris has a heart problem and is forced to retire. His unfaithful wife Millie is having a love affair with his colleague, the science teacher Frank Hunter, and he is hated and despised by the students, fellows and the direction of the school. His pupil Taplow is studying with him the tragic Greek poem The Agamemnon, expecting to be promoted at school. On his last days at school, Crocker-Harris is informed by the headmaster that the board refused to pay his pension plan for earlier retirement and he realises that he is a failure as a teacher and a man. This is a brilliant movie based on a Terence Rattigan play. Michael Redgrave is simply superb as the downtrodden schoolmaster Crocker-Harris and the depth of his portrayal is astounding. His acting skills makes it easy to empathise with the character's status as a man beaten down so much by his failures in life that the only thing he has left is his academic brilliance and just maybe a sliver of self dignity that he's trying so hard to hang onto. I dare you not to cheer or shed a tear when he finally speaks at his final farewell speech to the students. The ending of this movie is all about acting. You don't have to yell and scream and show a lot of emotion to get a point across on film. You just have to do what this guy does....be humble...and honest. Absolutely incredible. It's worth watching this movie just for that speech alone. Highly recommended.

An Eye for an Eye
A fairly standard revenge actioner for Chuck Norris after his partner in the police force is murdered and he resigns in order to pursue the killers. The movie has plenty of action, tension, suspense and cheesy sub-plot to boot with wild stunts. You can guess straight away who the mole is in the police department that's supplying information to the big bad villain played by Christopher Lee. There's a couple of martial art fights as Norris cleans up the Chinese fighters by means of punches and kicks. It's violent, frenetic and hectic. I found it funny in the final fight between Norris and a big Chinese bloke that the sound effects for Han Solo's blaster is used when Norris connects with his 3 kicks!! Chuck Norris' acting skills here won't win any awards but he's not too bad. If you like your martial arts flicks and are not too worried about plot, then I would recommend this one to you. It may not be intellectually brilliant but it is kick ass entertaining!

Kill Her Gently
Two escaped convicts hail down a motorist Jeff who willingly gives them a lift. Unbeknownst to them he knows who they are and has a proposition to make to them. In return for 1,000 pounds he wants them to kill his wife. This is a gripping and brutal movie, especially in it's depiction of women. One example is the motorist's au-pair who is beaten and then murdered by one of the criminals. The movie largely takes place in the cramped confines of a country home. Perhaps the most interesting thing about the story is that the criminals themselves are far less deranged and dangerous than Jeff, who approaches his scheme with the cool, detached air of a psychopath. The best performance comes from Marc Lawrence who plays a sleazy, hardened convict who nevertheless reveals a streak of humanity. This little-known but effective British b-movie is worthy of being checked out.

I, Daniel Blake
A hard hitting, raw and honest look at how the British system is failing it's own people. Daniel Blake is a middle-aged carpenter who's taken a few recent knocks, one of which is suffering a heart-attack and deemed not able to return to work. It's a position no one would want to be in, forced to sacrifice your own health or lose everything you have worked so hard for. The viewer gets to witness the hurdles that seem purposely put there to hinder payments. How are people such as Daniel Blake suppose to survive, or better still, have a good life they are suppose to be able to live. The movie gives an emotional look at the suffering and poor way of life some unfortunate people have to contend with in Great Britain. It's compelling, invoking and upsetting, showing the great lengths and risks people go through in order to maintain their self dignity. Well done to director Ken Loach for bringing something like this to our screen. Dave Johns is exceptional as Daniel Blake, emitting the boiling frustrations of the soul- destroying turn of events, right to the very end. Hayley Squires' Katie is short of brilliant too, displaying the tremendous pressure when faced with these kind of tribulations. The food bank scene with her is heartbreaking to watch. Overall, this movie is a powerful character piece that highlights the desperation of the good hearted, but poorer people in British society and how they are left as outcasts in society due to the state. Very highly recommended.

Constantine
When a Mexican finds the Spear of Destiny amidst ruins, it sets off a chain of events that could lead to a Hell-fueled Armageddon on Earth. Enter John Constantine, freelance demon-hunter, and Los Angeles detective Angela Dodson, who are to play roles in the ongoing battle between heaven and hell. This DC comic-book offering from Hollywood is this dark, depressing supernatural thriller which sees Keanu Reeves as a Neo-like hero, this time employed as an exorcist to prevent half-breed demons from entering our plane. The plotting and back story of the movie is impressive, with plenty of technobabble to delight the viewers, and the acting isn't half bad either. Reeves is very good as the laconic, chain-smoking star, giving a relaxed and mature performance. Rachel Weisz is also effective as the heroine, proving to be more than just a woman-in-peril, and her natural beauty shines through many of the odd sequences in which she partakes. The best thing by far in the movie are the special effects, especially those of the demons and the glimpses of Hell we get, which are simply fantastic. Very enjoyable.

Where Does It Hurt?
Peter Sellers plays the corrupt head of a hospital that uses an array of schemes to bilk patients and insurance companies out of thousands of dollars. Rick Lenz plays a patient who becomes aware of the shenanigans going on and tries to bring Sellers and his staff down, but finds that they seem to have a trick up their proverbial sleeves at every turn. Considered to be one of Sellers' worst movies, it isn't as bad as some say it is but is nowhere near some of his best work. The movie manages to have a few amusing moments, but comes off more like a gag reel than a story. The characters are exaggerated and unlikable. The viewer is supposed to side with Lenz and his predicament, but he so stupidly allows the doctors to take advantage of him at the beginning that it becomes hard to. The whole thing gets sillier by the second until by the end itโ€™s completely inane. Apart from seeing Sellers do a reasonable American accent, the best out of the whole cast is Pat Morita who is genuinely amusing as a lab tech with an inferiority complex and at one point even speaks in a British accent. The awful and irritating country music soundtrack doesn't help things to be honest. For Sellers completists only.

Orders Are Orders
An army barracks is taken over by a Hollywood production unit to film a sci-fi movie. The soldiers aren't complaining as there are plenty of pretty girls in revealing costumes for them to leer at and some of them even get a part in the movie. Everything seems to be going well until Divisional Commander turns up for one of his inspections. This is a fairly unremarkable British movie but it does have the presence of 3 comedy greats together for the first and only time in Sid James, Tony Hancock and Peter Sellers. The trio try their best with a poor script but the movie doesn't have a lot of laughs in it. Director David Paltenghi seems to think that having chaotic scenes with people shouting at each other is supposed to be funny but it isn't. Those who look sharp enough may also catch a glimpse of Eric Sykes and Donald Pleasance in small cameo roles. All in all, you may want to catch this just to see Peter Sellers in one of his early roles but otherwise it's not really worth your time.

The Torture Chamber of Dr. Sadism
Christopher Lee is Count Regula who lives in a big castle and steals away young virgin girls. He tortures them & uses their blood for his "life elixir". His final victim manages to escape to inform the local authorities and he is executed for his crimes. He manages to come back from the dead 35 years later to exact his revenge on the descendants of his last victim and the judge/magistrate that sentenced him to death. I don't know how I've managed to miss this movie over the years as it's a good one. Borrowing loosely from Poe's "The Pit and the Pendulum", director Reinl does a masterful job of pacing and fills the screen with surreal and spine tingling images. There is atmosphere a plenty throughout the movie and a sense of uneasiness. The set pieces and costumes are beautiful and are enhanced by the colour filming of the movie. Christopher Lee looks wonderfully terrible - a shambling, blueish corpse with a nail-hole scarred face, absolutely void of emotion as he plots his revenge. A fun and atmospheric horror movie that I really liked.

Jane Eyre
Once again it's another adaptation of the novel Jane Eyre written by Charlotte Bronte. This time Mia Wasikowska plays the main character, Jane Eyre, and Michael Fassbender plays her love interest, Edward Rochester. The big question, surrounding the movie, is, well, is this movie worth seeing since it has practically been done to death already. Overall, I would say yes. For starters the movie's beautiful cinematography alone makes it worth seeing. In fact, that's the best thing it has to offer and that is no insult to the actors and actresses in the movie. There are plenty of beautiful shots showing the open countryside of England as Jane wanders around, trying to find her place. Even inside the mansions the cinematography is just breathtaking and it truly adds to the movie. The cinematography creates a unique atmosphere that at times makes it almost seem like a horror flick and it adds to the Gothic nature of the movie. Mai Wasikowska plays a strong Jane Eyre and is definitely worthy of playing the role. She holds her own against the likes of Judi Dench and other great actors. Michael Fassbender is also great in his role. Overall, if you're a fan of the novel you won't be disappointed. There is enough in the movie to keep the audience interested and that is what matters when all is said and done.
