Little Moon and Jud McGraw
After being framed, a cowboy is sent to jail. After his time is served, he leaves with vengeance in his heart. Soon he meets a young Native American woman and together they go to settle their score with a small town and its corrupt leader. AKA Gone With The West. One of the messiest, most incompetent comedy westerns I've ever seen. I thought it might have been decent with James Caan, Sammy Davis Jnr and Stefanie Powers in the cast but it is just dross. The so-called comedy just isn't funny unless you're into crappy slapstick scenes. I'd go further and say that the 2 main leads are like live-action versions of Warner Bros cartoon characters. The movie even periodically cuts to a person in a town crooning an old spiritual number. The story is virtually incoherent. Absolute shit!

The Pleasure Girls
When Sally moves to London to pursue a modelling career, she moves in with Angela and Dee and discovers the world of the carefree bachelor girl in swinging 60's London. There isn't that much of a big storyline in this great little movie - it just follows the lives and loves of a couple of young women who are renting flats in the same building. The cast is mostly the big interest with Ian McShane as a beatnik photographer, Klaus Kinski as a landlord/mobster who gets beaten up right near the end and Mark Eden as a down on his luck man who is pawning stuff off from his girlfriend in order to raise some cash to pay off debts. Anneke Wills is perfectly cast as the flighty blonde girl-about-town, and would soon be signed up by the producers of Doctor Who to essentially fulfill the same role. Nice location shooting in London. This isn't a masterpiece by any stretch but it is an interesting and fairly entertaining look at how previously traditional relationships and roles between men and women were changing in the sixties. Worth a look.

Goliath Against the Giants
Goliath fights sea monsters and Amazon warriors when he tries to stop a mad king who is throwing those that are rising against him into a valley of giants. A fair to middling Italian sword and sandals movie. The movie does tend to lag in the middle section but you can see Brad Harris as the muscleman Goliath who is kept busy throughout the story as he has to fight crowds of soldiers as well as various beasties including a sea serpent, a lion, a strange ape-like creature, a dragon, and several big chunky giants. Harris is good as Goliath as he has a ruggedness that gives him an almost comic book appearance. This movie is rather silly but there is enough energy and action scenes to make up for the many shortcomings in the story. If it's a simple popcorn movie with a lot of thrills and monsters you want then this will be right up your street.

Deborah and Charles, young executives at the thriving Pontifex Advertising Agency, are very much in love. But there is one hard-and-fast rule at the agency: the board of directors will not allow any married women on their staff; as soon as a girl marries, she must resign! This is supposed to be a comedy movie about working life in an advertising agency before the dawn of women's lib. The story is hardly incisive and it's certainly not hilarious. Quite frankly it's rather dull and as it was director Maurice Elvey's final movie he went out with a whimper and not a bang. Adrienne Corri and Thorley Walters as the leads are OK in their roles. It's possible that had there been more humour, the movie could have been better. In the end, I thought it was a waste of time and wouldn't recommend it.

Seventy Deadly Pills
A small boy, Dickie Goodwin, finds some strychnine pills mixed with sweets in a stolen car left in a deserted garage. With them he buys his way into the Rocket Gang. Brian, the leader, shares out the pills for swaps next day. One of the gang eats hers and collapses. The police frantically search for the pills and a broadcast appeal is made. A great CFF movie showing a snapshot of a bygone era when derelict buildings were the playgrounds of small children, and when mothers would happily leave their pre-teen child with an instruction that there was something in the oven for tea. The story motors along at a decent pace with the climax taking place at the now gone Battersea Fun Fair which will bring back memories for Londoners of a certain age. The moral of the story is never take and eat any sweets unless they're from a shop. Some familiar faces in the movie include Warren Mitchell, Leslie Dwyer and the breakout star in a young Sally Thomsett. On the whole, it's an enjoyable family adventure.

Arabesque
When a plot against a prominent Middle Eastern politician is uncovered, David Pollock, a professor of ancient hieroglyphics at Oxford University, is recruited to help expose the scheme. Pollock must find information believed to be in hieroglyphic code. A movie that tries to be both a suspense and a spy spoof, but doesn't entirely succeed at either. The movie is a series of unlikely plot twists, general confusion, and Sophia Loren wardrobe changes. And at the end, any attempt to make sense of the story will only cause you to realise it makes even less sense than you thought. Gregory Peck and Sophia Loren are good in their roles. In the end, it's a fun cheesy movie but it isn't special by any means.

Persecution
A boy kills his mother’s cat out of jealousy, and she proceeds to punish him for the deed for the rest of his life. When the boy grows up, gets married and has a child of his own, his mother begins scheming on how to destroy the marriage. However, she herself has a few skeletons in the closet... This Tyburn psychological horror starring screen legend Lana Turner is one strange tale and it's much maligned among movie fans due to the over-deliberate pacing and the fact that there’s a sense of absurdity underlying much of the action in the movie. It doesn't have a pleasant storyline and it's awful seeing the evil mother torment the child so much. The focus is mostly on the persian cat Sheba and the role it may or may not have in the deaths that occur throughout the movie. Lana Turner delivers a solid performance with Ralph Bates also doing well as the tortured son. Parts of the movie are interesting but on the whole it's just about average.

Hennessy

Hennessy
Hennessy is an Irish explosives expert who believes in peace, but who has had connections to the IRA. Hennessy’s family is accidentally killed by the British army in Belfast, and he plots revenge, setting out to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London. This is a pretty decent thriller that attracted a lot of media attention and notoriety when it was released and some cinemas refused to show it because of its IRA theme and the Queen’s appearance in newsreel footage. It has a well crafted story with a good cat amd mouse game between the police and the IRA in trying to stop Hennesey from completing his mission during the final third. The compelling Rod Steiger is great in the leading role with solid performances from a decent cast of reliable actors such as Lee Remick and taut direction from a capable action film-maker in Don Sharp. A young Patrick Stewart (complete with some hair) has a tiny 5 min cameo in the first third. All in all, this is a grim, layered little revenge drama given a big boost by Rod Steiger's quiet turn. It's worth a look.

Hamburger: The Motion Picture
Russell has been expelled from several schools for lewd, crude and nude conduct. Busterburger University is his last chance at education and satisfying his disappointed parents. A comedy movie more entertaining than it has any right to be, it features a absolutely goofy vibe, a cast of familiar B-faces and filth that is not off-putting somehow. The basic plot is pure formula and one you've seen in Police Academy etc but it does have a valid commentary on the fast food industry even today. The acting by the cast isn't half bad but the one that stands out most is Dick Butkis. There are numerous sight gags that are funny in this movie. As long as you don't expect too much, you'll have a great time watching this movie.

Popeye
Popeye is a super-strong, spinach-scarfing sailor man who’s searching for his father. During a storm that wrecks his ship, Popeye washes ashore in the fishing village of Sweethaven and winds up rooming at the Oyl household, where he meets Olive. Before he can win her heart, he must first contend with Olive’s fiancé, Bluto. This is one of the first live-action movie adaptations of a cartoon and it isn't that good. As soon as the town of Sweetwater broke out into song about a minute into the movie, I knew I came to this woefully unprepared. It tries to be a mix of things and none of them work - the comedy is poor and the music is just plain awful. Then there is the cartoonish movements and sound effects that will only appeal to young kids. It's true that the characters, the set and costume design are good and the actors’ performances stay true to the cartoons but it's everything else that's the problem especially the script and it goes on for too long. Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall do the best they can but even they can't save this movie so unfortunately I didn't really like it. If you want to see some Popeye adventures, check out the old cartoons and don't bother with this one.

Prick Up Your Ears

Prick Up Your Ears
When the young, good-looking Joe Orton encounters the older, more reclusive Kenneth Halliwell at drama school, he helps the allied spirit and they begin an affair. As Joe becomes more contented with his sexuality and commences to find achievement with his writing, Kenneth becomes progressively estranged and envious, eventually tapping into a hazardous anger. This is the story of British playwright Joe Orton in Stephen Frears’ tragi-comedy-drama charting his doomed relationship with his lover Kenneth Halliwell. Gary Oldman and Alfred Molina both give very good performances in their respective parts as Joe Orton and Kenneth Halliwell. The script is written to a decent standard by Alan Bennett as he makes the movie good to follow and creates some humour too, meaning the movie never takes itself too seriously. The pace of the story is a little slow at times but that's only a minor criticism. Overall, despite the pacing, this is a very decent biographical drama, due to the very good performances from the two leads. Definitely worth a watch.

The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies!!?
Jerry, his girlfriend Angela, and their friend Harold take a trip to a local seaside carnival, but when the carnival’s fortune teller, Madame Estrella, predicts death for someone close to Angela, strange things begin to happen. The title might be long and great but the movie is entirely forgettable and boring. There is really nothing redeemable about this very low budget movie. Once it gets going, it is tolerably bad and at least 75% of it seems to be nothing more than a showcase of women singing and dancing. This adds nothing to the plot. The acting is flat and terrible. Had it not been for the title, this movie would have faded into obscurity a long long time ago. You might want to take a look if you're curious about the cult following this movie has but you'll instantly regret it afterwards!

Age of Innocence
A British schoolteacher who became a pacifist during WW1 finds trouble in a conservative Canadian town. An interesting tale of a handsome but outspoken English teacher whose outspoken views on the evil of war causes a ripple in a town. The story has several levels: on one it's about a love triangle but it's also a much more multi-layered study of a society and world where silent rules and conventions dictate everything. David Warner performs well in the lead role with Honor Blackman as an alcoholic in a supporting role. The movie did not do well on release but 16 years later it was re-done by Martin Scorcese and was more favourably received by the general public. It's a good little movie which deserves to be seen more by people.

The Devil
An aristocratic widow discovers that her former lover, a medical officer in the British army, is secretly a German spy. A terribly cheap WWII espionage b-movie with nothing to recommend about a remote clifftop castle and the sinister Nazi official lurking around inside. It has boring dialogue and stilted, grimacing performances. The heroes in the movie are so stupid that they repeatedly allow the main character to win the upper hand simply by doing nothing, and the ending is rushed. The only good thing about this is that it's merely an hour long. I would definitely avoid it.
