Superintelligence
When an all-powerful Superintelligence chooses to study average Carol Peters, the fate of the world hangs in the balance. As the A.I decides to enslave, save or destroy humanity, it's up to Carol to prove that people are worth saving. I like Melissa McCarthy, she has great comedic timing, she can act and she is genuinely funny. I was looking forward to watching this movie, but I was so disappointed. She really deserves better than this. This movie also has the added irritation of James Corden, who nobody really likes in the UK. If the movie had concentrated on just Carol and the A.I it might have been OK but it went down the pathetic slushy route of being with Carol and the man she likes. I actually found myself not caring what happened to anyone. This movie promises a lot but never takes off. A shame.

The Unholy
A hearing-impaired girl is visited by the Virgin Mary and can suddenly hear, speak, and heal the sick. As people flock to witness her miracles, terrifying events unfold. Are they the work of the Virgin Mary or something much more sinister? This movie had an interesting story that made me want to watch it but I'm sorry to say that the filmmakers didn't do a good job. It is painfully average and generic. It has a goldmine at its disposal with its clever premise, and instead it throws every good idea by the wayside to instead fill its running time with cheap jump scares and lazy exposition. It looks and feels like a cheap TV movie and the CGI is poor. Jeffrey Dean Morgan does his best but even he can't save this. Is it worth checking out? No, it's not.

Jungle Cruise
In 1916, Dr. Lily Houghton enlists the services of skipper Frank Wolff to sail her down the Amazon in search of the fabled Tears of the Moon which has powers to heal any illness. What an awful movie this was. This has all the charm of being trapped inside of a pinball machine. That's literally what this movie feels like! And, at a certain point, the plot falls apart on you. There was no chemistry between The Rock and Emily Blunt. This is just silly eye candy for kids. The movie is sloppily written and poorly executed, even for a kids movie! The CGI is even poor in many scenes. It may find an audience in little kids but adults will feel short changed in the crappy story and bad jokes throughout the movie. Terrible.

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City
Set in 1998, this origin story explores the secrets of the mysterious Spencer Mansion and the ill-fated Raccoon City. The latest Resident Evil movie tries at a more faithful adaptation of the game that definitely has its moments and some satisfyingly accurate recreations but still has too many problems and lacks both the fear and genuine horror to be a truly definitive adaptation. It takes way too long to really get going and then abruptly ends making it feel extremely rushed. Kaya Scodelario, Hannah John-Kamen, Robbie Amell, Tom Hopper and Avan Jogia all give good performances but none them truly embody their iconic characters. This unfortunately has nothing to offer those who hanker for a proper adaptation of the game.

The Forever Purge
All the rules are broken as a sect of lawless marauders decides that the annual Purge does not stop at daybreak and instead should never end. Gathering up another ensemble of B-listers and recognisable faces such as Josh Lucas, Ana de la Reguera and Cassidy Freeman, this movie at first appears to be more of the same but thankfully we get a different taste of Purge action this time around as a group of die-hard American's decide they're going to keep the Purge activities going for as long as they deem fit as director Everardo Gout infuses his tale with a more topical and political examination of America's social climate at this day and time. However, poor script work, unlikable or unengaging characters and a lack of scares hurt this movie's chances of becoming much more than a merely distracting and time passing experience. It's a watchable if unspectacular new entry to a franchise that refuses to say goodbye.

Halloween Kills
This is the 2nd part of the recent (and unnecessary) Halloween franchise reboot. It follows on directly from the end of the previous movie (which I haven't seen). As it is part of a trilogy you know that Michael Myers will not die in this one and it's just an excuse for him to go on a gory murdering spree. If you've seen one Halloween movie you've seen them all. Nothing changes plotwise. It's basically an empty worthless movie. Jamie Lee Curtis doesn't do a lot here. She's wasted more than anything. I hope that the final movie in the trilogy which comes out in October 2022 will be a lot better than this. Gorehounds should get a kick out of the nasty deaths that take place. Average at best.

Hutch Mansell is just your average everyday nobody trying to live a quiet life with his wife and kids. Everything changes though when two intruders break into his home one night and steals an important item belonging to his young daughter. After tracking the thieves down, he takes down a group of obnoxious teens on a bus with all of them needing hospital treatment. Unfortunately one of the teens is the brother of a big-time Russian mobster and he wants Hutch dead. This is a brilliant action movie, similar to the likes of John Wick. There's a lot to like here, primarily the action sequences and the casting. Bob Odenkirk is awesome as Hutch and the less I say about his character's background the better for the viewer. Christopher Lloyd as Hutch's father is a blast to see. The action is exciting, brutal and, eventually, balls-to-the-wall ridiculous. It escalates as the movie progresses and is always enjoyable, its fast-paced but typically grounded choreography framed with clean yet visually pleasing cinematography. On the whole, this is a pleasing action movie which will satisfy most fans of the genre.

Army of the Dead
With Las Vegas infected by zombies, billionaire casino owner Bly Tanaka approaches mercenary Scott Ward about a heist to recover $200 million from his casino vault before the military destroys Vegas with a tactical nuclear strike. Director Zack Snyder seems to have copied elements of Aliens and Oceans 11 for this ultra violent action/horror movie. I liked this movie because it was mindless fun. The only thing I did not like was the duration of it which was too long. The performances from the cast aren't too great with Dave Bautista barely watchable. One character is even a rip-off of Vasquez from Aliens but you'll see other similarities to that movie as well. This is a big visual extravaganza and all the zombies look horrifying and their make-up is terrifying as hell. Unfortunately the storytelling is outdated and I'm sure Zack Snyder could have created a far more interesting plot. Anyway, on the whole if you're into zombie movies this is watchable enough but don't expect anything less than something you've seen before.

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It
It's 1981. The Warrens are participating in the exorcism of a boy named David Glatzel. It leads to the case of Arne Johnson who murders his landlord with the Warrens convinced that a demonic possession made him do it. Another good sequel to the franchise. Like it's predecessors, this movie is also based on a true story which gives it authenticity in this unnatural genre of storytelling. The opening scene is extremely scary and that hooks you into the narrative for next 100 minutes. There are no boring moments at all, instead there are few cliches which comes with certain amount of interesting backdrop. The two main leads are as reliable as ever with their performances. All in all, this movie remains faithful to its franchise values and continues haunting the viewers with the same impact.

Widows
When four women are widowed all in one night their lives were inexorably altered. If it wasn't bad enough with no husbands and little to no means to support themselves, they find out that the drug dealer their husbands had stolen from wants his money back. What a great movie by director Steve McQueen. One way to describe the story in the movie is to say it's the tale of ordinary women becoming sophisticated gangsters, taking over the profession and learning the skills of robbery mastered by their husbands. It's hard to tell what kind of movie this is supposed to be: it's not a light comedy or a heist movie although it certainly flirts with both genres at various moments. The action elements are there but they are not terribly spectacular or very inventive. The focus seems to have been more on the psychology of the characters faced not only with the truth about the way their husbands made for a good living, but also obliged to replace them in crime. Fine acting by Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, and Elizabeth Debicki who make up the main trio in the story. Robert Duvall, Liam Neeson and Colin Farrell contribute with their talents in supporting roles. In the end, this is a solid movie that should interest most people who enjoy this kind of story.

A woman watches her husband and young daughter murdered on the orders of a drug lord. She swears revenge and vows to take them all out. This is a highly entertaining action movie of revenge. The plot is the traditional story of injustice and vengeance with a top performance by Jennifer Garner as the vigilante Riley North. A woman who has no choice but to take matters into her own hands after the legal system fails her due to corrupt law officials and police officers. The story is predictable but the action sequences are fantastic with bloody, brutal, sometimes gory, violence. If a 'one-person army' popcorn movie is what your after, then you can't go wrong with this one.

Crazy Rich Asians
It's difficult to describe just how bad this movie is. Imagine 100 minutes of scene after scene containing obscene displays of wealth by obnoxious, pretentious, self-centered, condescending people who have complete disregard and utter contempt for anyone who's less than a billionaire. The kind of vain-glorious people you'd never want to spend a moment around. It's been labelled as a rom-com but there isn't any comedy at all in it. It's the type of movie that makes you cringe throughout. The plot is non-existent. The cast are all awful...well Michelle Yeoh might be OK but everybody else is crap. This shite definitely goes into my list of one of the worst movies ever.

The Beast
Two detectives Han-So and Mintae are trying hard and soul to catch the killer of a young schoolgirl. While solving the case, Han-so takes the help of his underworld connection. After that things started to turn ugly when his underworld informant kills a person. The informant starts threating him and asks him to cover the case for her. Mintae on the other hand starts thinking something really fishy is going on with Han-So. This great Korean movie follows two detectives' rivalry and their extreme competition of proving oneself better than the other. There are many twists and turns in this film. The first half is suspenseful and intriguing, but ultimately it all becomes a bit too contrived and convoluted and quite unbelievable as it goes on. Still, I really liked it especially the wonderful performance by Sung-min Lee. Director Jung-Ho Lee creates genuinely creepy and shocking sequences that ramp up the tension alongside the power struggle between the two leads. In the end, this movie remains a gripping and grim tale of male ego, power dynamics and the risks people will take for control and respect.

A Quiet Place: Part II
Following the events at home, the Abbott family now face the terrors of the outside world. Forced to venture into the unknown, they realize the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats lurking beyond the sand path. A fantastic sequel. It begins by going back to when the aliens arrived on Earth and then it continues from Part One, only this time it takes place on the move rather than just being set mainly in one location. The best thing about this movie is the action and the numerous jump scares. More survivors are shown but they don't really move the plot at all. It has a bit of an odd ending in that it stops very abruptly but I guess that means there will yet be another sequel. The main cast all perform well. Sequels can be a bit of a disappointment but this one isn't. If you loved the first then you've got to check it out.

Calamity the Cow
Farmer Grant's children get him to buy a cow from another farmer. The children work hard to make the cow fit and healthy enough for the show ring but the cow is stolen one night. The kids try to discover who the thieves are? Just your usual bog standard CFF movie with a predictable storyline. The one thing that stands out in this movie is it has a young teenage Phil Collins as one of the kids but as he was apparently a bit of a dick on set he is written out of the story for 3/4 of it until he comes back for the climax. The humour is dated and not very funny although small kids would find it amusing I imagine. A passable enough movie that wastes an hour of your time.

On the run from a lethal assassin, a wily con artist devises a scheme to hide out inside a small-town police station-but when the hitman turns up at the precinct, an unsuspecting rookie cop finds herself caught in the crosshairs. This movie which reminds the viewer of Assault on Precinct 13 is decent but uneven. It feels like something Quentin Tarantino and John Carpenter would combine forces on. The weak plot is intertwined between violent shootouts and feisty one-liners. It's a bit slow going at the start but it gets a good pace about half way through. Good acting from the cast with Toby Huss stealing every scene he's in. So in the end, it's worth a watch for some enjoyable set pieces.
