The Happy Family
When the Government decide to build a Festival of Britain exhibition site, everything goes to plan, all except the fact that the main road and the pedestrian subway into the site, are blocked by a little corner shop, which is owned and run by a Mr. Lord and his family. When the Lords refuse to be bought off, and decline the compensation offered by the authorities. the police and the bailiffs try to evict them, only to come under fire from the family, who have barricaded themselves inside the shop. The sprit of an Ealing 'little man' taking on the 'big boys' story runs through this great little comedy movie. Some of the scenes have obviously been copied from Passport To Pimlico but despite that this movie is still fantastic to watch. Stanley Holloway and Kathleen Harrison lead the faithful Lord family as they will do anything in their power to stop the government from evicting them out of their home. George Cole and Dandy Nichols play supporting characters. The ending is something that would never happen these days. Overall, a nice and humourous comedy that worth seeking out.

My Science Project
Michael and Ellie break into a military junkyard to find a science project for Michael’s class, and discover a strange glowing orb which absorbs electricity. When the orb begins to blend past, present, and future, its up to Michael and Ellie to stop the orb and save mankind. An 80's teen movie I must have missed when it first came out. The story is a mixture of different movies from this time period all rolled up into one. It was great fun to watch thanks to a jolly, unpretentious plot, good effects, good casting and good acting. The special effects look a bit dated but they don't spoil the overall enjoyment of the movie. Dennis Hopper who was just out of rehab plays a hippie science teacher. The young cast are fine although the wisecracking Italian kid gets a bit tiresome after a while. Still, it was a great and entertaining movie that I really liked.

Letter to Brezhnev
Two Liverpool women, Teresa and Elaine meet two Russian sailors, Sergei and Peter and hook up for a night of fun and frolics. Teresa is looking for sex and a smile, Elaine wants love, romance and the dream of a life far away from the grime of the Liverpool docklands. A very entertaining comedy drama movie. The movie uses the oppression of Russia and the individualism of the UK as a way to comment on different class systems, Elaine meets a Russian man and falls in love, later she gets the offer to go to Russia so they can be reunited. To what lengths should we sacrifice ourselves to be with the ones we love? Does freedom matter when your heart is aching? This is something that the film explores, with Elaine being told by everyone that she is crazy for wanting to go to a country that is known as being oppressive. The cast are great with Margi Clarke and Alexandra Pigg playing the Scousers and Peter Firth and Alfrd Molina as the Russian sailors. The script written by Margi's brother Frank is well written and full of humour. Overall, a great fun movie to watch.

Killer
Four mental patients who, due to unauthorized experiments, believe they’re living in a dream and have shed all moral imperatives escape and find their way to the nearest bus-load of stranded schoolgirls holed up in a large mansion in the Lake District. A decent British horror/exploitation movie. The first half of this movie is actually rather effective; there’s an offhand, slightly comic air to the proceedings that has the effect of leaving us with the feeling that everyone involved has no real sense of the pending horrific ordeal. The 4 loonies which includes Blake's 7 star David Jackson are like knock-off droogs from A Clockwork Orange. They are vicious as they dole out sadistic punishment such as raping some of the female cast. There's a little bit of dark humour to proceedings especially in some of the dialogue. The main problem with the movie is the writer wasn't sure whether to make a serious horror or a darkly comedic one and as such it's a little bit of a mess. I disliked the flippant attitude to rape as said by one of the schoolgirls to her friend. If you're into controversial movies (and this one certainly was at the time!) you might get something out of it but I'm sure others will be really offended by it's content.

Legend of the Werewolf
A travelling circus in 19th century France adopts and showcases a feral “wolf boy”, who grows into adulthood only to kill the one-man band. He runs off to Paris, where he develops a jealous, overprotective crush on a prostitute, leading him to attack her client, incurring a pursuit by a determined police surgeon. This good horror movie might look like a Hammer production but it was in fact done by a lesser known studio called Tyburn. Even though their budgets were smaller than Hammer’s, they get by pretty well by recruiting talent that had been established by Hammer. This movie isn’t particularly well regarded, but I think it is a bit underrated. The direction by Freddie Francis is very good and I really like the werewolf POV-shots. It has an excellent cast in Hugh Griffith, Peter Cushing, Roy Castle and Ron Moody. The werewolf make up is clearly based on the Oliver Reed version which was done in an earlier production in the early 60's. As always, Peter Cushing is wonderful and does carry the investigatory portion of the movie. A rather solid horror movie in my opinion.

Leopard Fist Ninja
He’s a loner who’s traveled far, seeking out chances to improve and finally perfect his fighting skills. For now, he can fulfill his life’s destiny: to kill the man who calls himself King Kong – the man responsible for his parents’ death. But Kong is waiting, armed with the service of the sinister Falcon and his shadow warriors. An innacurate title for the movie as there are no ninjas in it at all. Surprisingly for a silly Godfrey Ho martial arts movie, it isn't a cut and paste effort from him at all. It all seems to be one movie. However the camera angles, script, acting and everything else is shoddy and the only decent thing it's got going is the martial arts fights. Entirely forgettable from start to finish and only good for a laugh when you're drunk, this is another Godfrey Ho movie to keep clear of.

Disciple of Death
A henchman of Satan is bought back to life and poses as a priest in order to get closer to young virgins he needs for human sacrifice. This is a like a British poor man's variation on Dracula. Given that the first 10 mins were rather good, I expected the rest to be just the same but no, it all goes downhill. Ex radio DJ Mike Raven plays satanist The Stranger and is out-acted by virtually the rest of the cast which includes Ronald Lacey and future Dr Who assistant Louise Jameson. The script is really poor and for the first 50 mins nothing of any substance happens. Things do pick up in the final 25 mins but not in any degree that it saves the movie from being what it is - a total catastrophe. Overall, this is a total misfire horror movie which should be avoided at all costs.

Bialy smok
A man with his young son is sent to a country to do an environmental report but finds that his company has other ulterior motives behind sending him there. Also a chinese man is trying to track down a dragon which is supposedly hiding in some caves. This obscure children's movie was a delight to watch. It's allegedly supposed to be a satire on cold war politics at the time. Shockingly for a kids movie there are a number of violent deaths such as a crossbow to the heart, a jeep with a driver which careers off a cliff and explodes and other goons gets shot or pushed off high places. The story is good and interesting but the special effects are dire. The dragon looks like something from "The Dark Crystal" with its eyes that shoots red lasers and turns people into stone. Christopher Lloyd performs well with Dee Wallace as a witch called Alta. The two youngsters were also great. The cinematography is beautiful with the movie being shot in rural Poland. Despite the violent content for a kids movie, this was quite an enjoyable tale to watch.

Deadly Impact
An Arizona policeman and his pilot buddy discover a scheme to rob Las Vegas slot machines by computer. A terrible actioner. In theory, even a sub-standard buddy cop thriller with Bo Svenson and Fred Williamson should be able achieve borderline adequacy thanks to the charisma of its leads, but unfortunately they seemingly have less screen time than the endless, deathly dull helicopter chase scenes, and the whole movie is cursed by one of the worst, most annoyingly insistent soundtrack I've ever heard. Even the action scenes are poorly choreographed. Complete rubbish.

The Endless
Two brothers return to the cult they fled from years ago to discover that the group’s beliefs may be more sane than they once thought. This sci-fi/paranormal movie struggles to stand out in any significant way. There are many things I liked about the movie but an equal amount that I didn't. It has an interesting style until any special effects is used which always looks terrible. I didn't think the two leads who also directed the movie weren't that good. It also goes on for way too long. Nothing is spelt out to the viewer and, at times, the dialogue is so intangible it becomes meaningless. If you are looking for complete closure at the end of the movie, this is not for you.

Power Play
In an unnamed Eastern European nation, inundated by an immoral government, violence and military law, a retiring colonel and his friends who are fed up of what they see occurring in their country are forced to put together a bold and hazardous military revolution d’etat. An enjoyable thriller. It was interesting for the way that it showed how a coup was organised and carried out, and having it set in a non-specific location allowed the movie to make good points about revolutions and the state, although the violence was quite brutal and most of the characters were a bit underdeveloped. The action sequences though there isn't a lot of them are well executed. There's a twist to the tale right at the end as well. The cast is headed by the trio of Donald Pleasance, Peter O'Toole and David Hemmings with ITC mainstay Barry Morse also having a small supporting role. This is an underrated movie which didn't do too well at the time of it's release but I think it's definitely worth having a look.

The March Hare
Sir Charles Hare, a young Irish baronet, gambles his all on one of his horses at Ascot. But the horse is ‘pulled’, and Sir Charles is forced to sell his Irish estate. His aunt, however, has some surprises in store for him. The 50's were supposed to be a golden period for British comedy movies though sadly this movie doesn't deserve to be labelled as a comedy as it is virtually devoid of it. It is ponderous and holds very little interest unless you have a great interest in racehorses or Peggy Cummins. The awful soundtrack doesn't help things either. I wasn't that impressed by the cast which includes Terence Morgan (who never does well in comedies), Wilfrid Hyde-White, Cyril Cusack and a cameo by Charles Hawtrey. Don't waste your time watching this clunker.

These Dangerous Years
A Liverpool gang member is called up for National Service where he clashes with another soldier. I wasn't expecting this to be such a good drama. The juvenile delinquency storyline is wonderfully evocative of the 1950's (all greased back quiffs, leather jackets, chain smoking and coffee bars). Frankie Vaughan takes centre stage and gets to perform 2 numbers which will please his fans. The story gets so much better when the location changes to the army barracks and Vaughan's character butts heads with another troublemaker. Things escalate out of control which leads to Vaughan's character accused of shooting him and then going on the run. Vaughan is supported in this movie by the tragic Carole Lesley and George Baker. There are small roles for Kenneth Cope and John Le Mesurier and a cameo from Thora Hird. In the end, this is an enjoyable movie with a good and exciting story and fine performances from the cast.

Pool of London (1951)
A sailor gets caught in a whirlpool of trouble with the police and murdering jewel thieves when smuggling black market goods ashore. Along his heap of troubles he gets his other innocent sailor friend into the mix unknowingly. This is a very good movie of a ship docked in London and the way everyday minor smuggling of contraband and nylons escalates into a jewel heist for a pair of sailors. There's also a nice grittiness to the ship and dockside setting and some excellent location shooting in the old London docks and bombed out centre. It was nice to see some of the old trams running in the city too, a year before they were taken out of service for good until they returned in 2000. The characters and dialogue all have a bit more detail and bite than they need which, together with the racial angles, elevates a fairly generic plot to a great one. There's many familiar faces in small cameos which include Leslie Phillips, James Robertson Justice and a blink or you'll miss it appearance by Arthur Mullard. Another interesting movie by director Basil Dearden which you should seek out to see.
