The Quiller Memorandum
After two British Secret Intelligence Service agents are murdered at the hands of a cryptic neo-Nazi group known as Phoenix, the suave agent Quiller is sent to Berlin to investigate. A ponderous but still interesting mid-60's British made cold-war drama with George Segal taking the leading role. It's no Bond movie that's for sure. Harold Pinter is responsible for the script and there are great Berlin location shooting. Though he doesn't have the same magnetism of Connery as a secret agent, I still think Segal pulls it off rather well with Alec Guinness playing a similar role to Smiley. Max Van Sydow is better as the neo-Nazi leader, veiled by the veneer of respectability as he cracks his knuckles and swings a golf club all the time he's injecting Quiller with massive doses of truth serum. The movie is definitely more John Le Carre than Ian Fleming despite the flat car chase and Quiller's escape from his captors. In the end, it's a fairly routine spy story given nothing special in the way of treatment.

Bad Dreams (1988)
The sole survivor of a cult who burned themselves to death in a house awakens after 13 years in a coma. However, she is haunted by visions of the cult's evil leader and when members of her therapy group start being murdered, she becomes convinced the cult's leader is responsible. A great, sometimes offbeat and humorous horror movie that seems as if it intends to coast on the success of the "Nightmare on Elm Street" series but ends up going on its own merry path. It works best when our heroine is still trying to make sense of macabre events and is not sure what the truth is. The writing is silly at times, but there are also fun moments. Plenty of bloody moments to please the gorehounds. Jennifer Rubin makes for a good heroine and it's no coincidence that she also starred in Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors which a lot of people say is similar to this movie. It has a nice twist at the end as well. A rather enjoyable and competently made late 80's horror movie.

A couple of youngish adventurers go into the wilderness of British Columbia in search of a lost colleague. Their plane crashes and they find themselves at the mercy of a crazed old Scottish miner, who has lived in isolation for many decades searching the mountain caves for a chamber of long lost gold. He is prepared to do anything including murder to keep his gold for himself. This was Charlton Heston's last theatrical feature as a leading man. The movie has a peculiar blend of genres mixing contemporary Western and horror movie elements. At times it's genuinely creepy and deals with the interesting, largely unexplored subject of hermit-like gold miners in remote British Columbia. The movie was a family affair as Charlton Heston also directed it, while among others son Fraser Clarke Heston produced it and wrote the script, and Fraser's actress mother Lydia, Charlton's wife, is credited as still photographer. The cinematography is breathtaking with stunning shots of British Columbia and the flying scenes in the opening 20 mins is fantastic. Heston is rather menacing as the miner Silas McGee and does a rather decent Scottish accent. Kim Basinger (in her 2nd movie) and Nick Mancuso play the adventurers searching for the hidden gold. It was quite a good adventure movie with an interesting villain. Worth tracking down.

A young couple, David and Catherine Robinson, have turned their large country house into a money-making proposition. Their solution is to invite the kids of the rich and famous to spend a summer enjoying all the loving care and attention they miss at home. After the youngsters arrive, David quickly realises what the offensive little punks need is some real discipline, and so the summer begins. This movie comes from the same team that brought you the Carry Ons but it isn't that good as it is basically devoid of any decent humour. There are 3 links in this movie to Agatha Christie as Geraldine McEwan and Joan Hickson who feature here go on to play Miss Marple in the future and Margaret Lockwood's daughter Julia is also in the cast. Julia's mother took part in 2 of Christie's plays on the London stage. Leslie Phillips who takes centre stage tones it down in this gentle comedy. The child actors are more annoying than anything else though you do get to see a very young Francesca Annis. The only person that does well out of this movie is Joan Hickson as the pissed up cook. A disappointing effort from director Gerald Thomas.

Linda’s out on her hen night, her fiance is out on his stag night. Linda is having major doubts about getting married, when both groups arrive at a club, to find the band fronted by her ex-boyfriend and the love of her life Peter. Linda has to decide: does she stay and settle down, like her friends want her to, or does she chuck it all in and run away with Peter? Liverpool playwright Willy Russell adapts his own 1978 play Stags and Hens for the big screen with this great movie which was shot on location in Liverpool itself. The story explores the themes of a narrow-minded, small town mentality suffocating dreams and potential. The city is depicted as a disenfranchised, post industrial Northern town, and the character of its people is depicted as cynical in nature. It also shows how going out clubbing was during the late 80's/early 90's in the UK and captures the fashions and attitudes of that period. Even though it's classed as a comedy, it's a little lighter on laughs than you might expect. Watch out for a small cameo from a young Stephen Graham as one of the kids playing football in the park. I really liked this movie.

A librarian Louise devotes her life to caring for her wheelchair-bound tyrannical father after being stood up at altar. She fantasises his death and finds joy only with her pet monkey. When the monkey disappears, a shocking past is revealed. An interesting psychological movie - it isn't a horror at all. The movie is completely built around the character of Louise and the performance given by Carrie Snodgress is just great. It could be so easy to play her over the top, but Snodgress takes the subtle route. There are numerous scenes where she is helping her father but fantasises killing him. The wheelchair bound father played by Ray Milland is a total bastard and hiding a secret of his own which is revealed near the end. Don't expect this movie to be like some others in which the main character finally snaps and kills her father as that doesn't happen. It does though end on a rather depressing note for Louise. You do feel sympathy for her. It's a sad nightmare of a movie which I liked.

A family of space aliens crash lands on Earth when their spaceship conks out. An abysmal sci-fi/comedy which was supposed to be a pilot for a TV series that never happened. This is supposed to be a light-hearted family-friendly tale not unlike Disney live action movies of the 1960s and 1970s (the Witch Mountain movies). However, it's bereft of comedy; or more accurately, it's bereft of comedy that is actually funny. The alien family even have a green skinned pet chimpanzee that is supposed to eat light bulbs (though you never see him eat one). James L. Conway directs this movie with zero style and energy. Even with the military in pursuit of the aliens, there is nothing of any excitement and tension to be had. Burl Ives and the rest of the cast are OK in the roles but sadly this movie is like a wet blanket and makes for a fairly bland viewing experience.

The Nightmare Never Ends (1980)
Police detective, Mitchell, investigating the death of a victim of a Nazi concentration camp discovers a nightclubbing playboy who has strange powers over women and is seemingly ageless. What can be said about this terrible movie? Well, it's not a quality movie I'll say that about it. Everything about it is bad: acting, dialogue, script, cast, cinematography, etc are all way below average. It's a truly wretched movie of cataclysmic proportions. The script tries in some ways to mimic The Omen in that Satan is amongst us on Earth and taken human form. I found the movie to be so boring and was totally uninteresting. Nothing to recommend here at all.

Looks and Smiles
Thatcherism and the Irish troubles provide the backdrop for this study of Mick, a well-meaning youth from Sheffield. Mick lives with his parents, works on his motorbike, looks for work, and every two weeks gets his check from the dole. There are no jobs. Then at a disco he meets Karen... Understated black and white drama by Ken Loach about the impact of Thatcherism (in this case, deliberate mass unemployment) on a young man and the community around him. Never preachy or sanctimonious, it simply reflects the realities of working class life. All of the cast are unknown actors (as with many of Loach's movies) and it feels like the story is showing real people not actors playing characters. Despite the depressing storyline and the ending on a freeze frame in a dole queue, I felt this was a really good movie showing how life was in the UK at this time in the early 80's. Recommended.

The Spider
Teenagers from a small town find a massive spider living in a cave. The inhabitants of the town must find a way to destroy it. A rather disappointing monster movie which is about as scary as a loose elephant running around town. And what's with that crazy sound effect the spider makes? Do spiders roar?? There isn't even any explanation even for the existence of the big spider. What's even with the title - it's just a small town taking on the arachnid not the entire world. It's a bad movie that is easy to dissect for all of its absurdities, but can also be enjoyed on an extreme camp level, whether it be the ludicrous situations or the high school students played by bad 30 something year old actors. Worth a watch if only to see how stupid a movie it is.

St. Helens
Mount St.Helens has lain dormant for many years until one day she blows her top. This is the movie dramatisation of the Mount St. Helens eruption that took place in May 1980 - the deadliest and most economically destructive volcanic event in U.S history. It centers on the small town of Cougar and it's residents who are not that far away from the mountain. The signs are all there that the mountain is going to explode but some of the residents which include crusty old timer Harry Truman refuse to budge from where they live. It all builds up to the last 15 mins which is devoted to the explosion itself, with an eclectic mix of footage and stills of the actual eruption, stock footage, and some ropey effects. All of which completely fails to get across the sheer awesome might of the event. Good acting from the entire cast but the standout is Art Carney as Harry Truman. In the end this is an entertaining disaster drama with a lovely score by Italian band Goblin.

The Crawling Eye
An American investigator for the U.N., a German scientist and a British reporter join forces to investigate a series of disappearances and mutilation-deaths confined to a Swiss mountain and involving a thick, mobile cloud, a telepathic girl, an animate dead man, and tentacled, one-eyed beings from another planet. This British made sci-fi horror movie was released in the US under the more sensationalistic title of The Crawling Eye! It's a fairly decent little effort, the setting helps with it's small isolated village and hazardous mountain terrain and the actual alien monsters are kept off screen until the last fifteen minutes which helps build suspense because when they do make an appearance the special effects are not very good at all. The story moves along at a decent enough pace and has a nice mix of horror and sci-fi but I wouldn't call it a classic. Warren Mitchell dons a dubious accent as a scientist working at an observatory high up on a mountain. Overall, it's a perfectly fine way to pass 80 odd minutes but not much else, plus it's fairly predictable.

Alien Nation
A few years from now, Earth will have the first contact with an alien civilisation. These aliens, known as Newcomers, slowly begin to be integrated into human society after years of quarantine. Back in the day, Alien Nation was a bit of a big deal although the series didn't last that long. I can't believe it's taken me this long to finally watch it. This is the pilot movie that started it all. To be honest, it isn't that different from any other buddy cop movie you've ever seen except that this one has aliens in it. It's crammed with clichés, but is lifted out of the ordinary and given serious intent by the choice of James Caan in the starring role. The chemistry between himself and his alien partner develops well. Both actors deserve good marks. A barely recognisable Terence Stamp has a lot more to offer than he was required here. A poor climax though which should have been a lot more exciting than what it was. An entertaining though predictable romp on the whole.

Dangerous Davies: The Last Detective
When D.C Dangerous Davies, not held in high regard by his superiors, is assigned to find a notorious criminal kingpin, he uncovers the details of 15 year old cold case in which a 17 year old girl mysteriously vanished. I'm not sure why this is classed as a comedy as it isn't really that. It's a criminally under seen thriller and one of the more intriguing crime dramas I have seen in quite some time, with an absorbing, well-written script by Leslie Thomas. The brilliant Bernard Cribbins gives a wonderfully full-blooded performance as the eternally crumpled, frequently drunk, remarkably canny copper Davies, along with the dogged crime solving capabilities he is a remarkably endearing copper and is capably assisted in his investigation by his loyal civilian friend Mod Lewis. The gripping storyline will keep your interest until the end. Along with Cribbins, there are appearances from Bill Maynard, Maureen Lipman, Joss Ackland, Bernard Lee and even the 6th Doctor in Colin Baker. It's a shame that Bernard Cribbins wasn't given more of these type of roles as he excels in this one. Well worth taking a look.

A divorced couple, living hand-to-mouth in Stockholm, must first pay their hotel bill before returning to England. To raise the necessary funds, they must pretend that they’re still married. Real life husband and wife Googie Withers and John McCullum star in this comedy about a divorced couple who, thanks to post-war restrictions on money taken out of the country, are stuck penniless in a Swedish hotel. It was based on a play but due to it still running in the West End the movie was released two years later, by which time the topical subject was out of date. Nevertheless, it’s a charming and cute movie that works due to the chemistry between the leads and a witty script. It’s stage origins are apparent, but it was still enjoyable.
