Mother!
This movie is unexpected and an experience like you've never had in your life. This is exactly why I enjoy Darren Aronofsky's work, you get to see stuff you've never seen before. It's a difficult watch in parts I won't lie about that. It's suspenseful, shocking, some will absolutely love it and others will despise it. I enjoyed it because it comes at you like a ton of bricks - it grabs you and doesn't let go. Its a cerebral thrill ride, a mystery of epic proportions until the end, at which point your brain is scrambled eggs. Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem were incredibly good together. I'd be lying if I said the movie didn't have its issues because it does, but I still really enjoyed it. Go and watch this with an open mind.

Happy Death Day
This is a horror-comedy that very knowingly takes the core conceit of Bill Murray's Groundhog Day and smashes it together with the slasher genre as one girl desperately tries to find out how to stop herself being murdered or she is doomed to replay the same day forever. It's surprisingly fun and effective, with the right balance of humour, scares and character development. The mystery of the killer's identity is another part of the fun. The movie introduces a bunch of characters in the first loop, many whom are red herrings for the audience to suspect. In the end I failed to guess the killer since the movie deployed multiple misdirection to make sure the secret is preserved. Overall, Happy Death Day is a pretty enjoyable horror flick with an interesting concept and a very good performance from the lead actress. I was not bored for even a second because of how fun it was. Yes it is absolutely implausible, bonkers and silly, but if you are looking some cheap thrills and a reason to crack a smile, this movie does its job pretty damn well.

Lady Chatterly vs. Fanny Hill
A British sex comedy so bad that even one of it's stars in Joanna Lumley is embarrassed about it! Two brothel Madams place a bet against each other that their top girl is better than the other in a series of challenges in which they have to try and seduce the unseducables. For a sex comedy it really is tame stuff. Only right at the beginning do you see any nudity. The comedy (if that's what you can call it) is piss poor and the less said about the acting the better. Penny Brahms is beautiful to look at but her acting skills is terrible. This movie is definitely bottom of the barrel stuff and as such should be avoided.

C.H.O.M.P.S. (1979)
A fun family movie about a young inventor that creates the ultimate security system - a robot dog based on his own canine pet named C.H.O.M.P.S (Canine Home Protection System). Incredibly fast with x-ray eyes and super strength, the robot dog can do just about anything. However, rival security companies try their best to steal technical plans for the robotic dog so that they can build and sell their very own for large profits. This isn't the greatest kid-geared movie made, but it is a lot of fun to watch and certain to bring a smile on your face. It's especially fun if you're a dog lover. Sure, some of what is going on is dopey but this is simple innocent entertainment after all. Just watching the little dog in action is pure joy, as he is able to scale walls, "pull" trucks, and operate machine buttons to capture the bad guys. Kids are sure to enjoy this movie.

The Seven Magnificent Gladiators
This is the Italian swords and sands version of The Magnificent Seven in which 7 brave warriors defend a small village against an evil man and his troops. Han, the leader of the brave warriors has a secret weapon - a magic sword that only he can hold. It's not a good telling of The Magnificent Seven story truth be told. The acting isn't great and the battles between the two factions aren't very exciting. Lou Ferrigno is OK as Han though his voice is clearly dubbed but there's always the busty Sybil Danning to take your mind off the cack handed plot. Only watch this is you really haven't got anything better to do.

Kiss Kiss, Kill Kill (1966)
The first in a series of German imitation-Bond movies made in the mid-60's and a rather good one too. This one's got it all โ€“ a likable lead in Tony Kendall, a put-upon sidekick in Brad Harris, over-the-top gadgets, lots of beautiful women (Maria Perschy, Christa Linder etc), a wonderfully entertaining villain, a cool underground lair, fight scenes galore, terrific European locations, a catchy title song, and a great explosive finale. What more could you ask for? Throw in a brainwashed army of women with matching blond hair, groovy black outfits, and machine guns (Fembots?), and you've got one heck of a cool movie. It may have stolen some ideas from the 007 movies but it's still got some charm and originality on it's own. The movie may start a bit slow, but once it gets going, it's just a ton of fun.

A Taste of Honey
This movie was a milestone in British cinema, and also introduced the magical young Rita Tushingham to the screen for the first time. It revolves around a 16 year old girl Jo who gets pregnant by a black sailor who abandons her soon after and also her despicable mother who is more interested in having a good time with men than looking after her daughter. She also abandons her daughter after getting married. Jo meets Geoffrey, a homosexual man who moves in with her and promises to look after her. This is a classic movie of a now vanished world. It really is a true picture of what life was like in the working class communities of Britain's northern industrial cities. There is extensive location filming in Manchester and the surrounding area. Barton Swing Bridge and the Manchester Liners Shipping Company, Old Trafford Football Ground complete with floodlight pylons, the atmosphere of a back street boozer and Blackpool's brightly lit amusements are seen. The acting is tremendous with Dora Bryan superbly cast as the selfish mother, Rita Tushingham the gawky teenager full of youthful wonder of her harsh world and Murray Melvin as the young adolescent battling with his sexuality and feelings for the enchanting Tushingham. It's a must see for anyone interested in what is known as a kitchen sink drama or who lives or has worked around Manchester.

Boy
This movie which takes a look at native life in rural New Zealand during the mid 80's captures the fleeting innocence of childhood. Boy, a scrawny twelve-year-old with an affinity for Michael Jackson, is tasked with watching his younger brother Rocky and a slew of cousins while his grandmother is away, but things get wild when Boy's estranged, criminal father reappears. Director Taika Waititi shows the lives of average Maoris in New Zealand. The comedy that's on show is fantastic. It's very interesting to see Boy and his family and friends interact on a daily basis. They run free across the town, where everybody know everybody, without a care. Boy manages to remain an upbeat and energetic movie, even while dealing with tough issues like broken families, drug use and death. Waititi's creative take on Boy and his father's rough relationship is both light and poignant, making the movie an entertaining watch for anyone who is a fan of Waititi or Michael Jackson.

Disowned by the sisters taking the lead roles, this is a poor sleazy British movie about witchcraft. A girl gets a job for a modeling agency, only to later discover that it's all a cover to recruit young girls for a coven of witches. She's got her eyes on taking over the head priestess role in the coven. This movie is just an excuse for Ann and Vicki Michelle (of Allo Allo fame) to get their clothes off and parade naked or wear scantily dressed clothes. The supernatural aspect of the story is barely mentioned. The movie gets boring very quickly. The acting and production values are awful and some of the dialogue laughable. Don't waste your time watching this crap.

Macross Frontier The Movie: The False Songstress
This anime movie is not a condensed 2 hour version of the TV series but rather an alternative retelling of the Macross Frontier story Do You Remember Love. In AD 2059, the Galactic Fairy Sheryl Nome, the latest in a long line of famous songstresses to grace the galaxy, descends upon Frontier to kick off her upcoming concert. At the same time the alien bugs Vajra decides to attack Frontier and suspicions begin to start that Sheryl is a spy for the Vajrans. Is Sheryl in league with the aliens or is there another force at work? This is the first of a 2 part movie series which concludes with The Wings Of Goodbye. It's a great movie but those that want to see numerous battle scenes will be disappointed. They are few and far between. This is more like a concert movie for Sheryl Nome and her songs are sung by the wonderful Japanese singer May'n. The characters are all likeable and are mostly the same as the TV series. The plot is not really the important part here - it's just set up for the 2nd part. The animation is really good. It's not the best Macross movie I've seen but still entertaining though.

A ridiculous and fairly disturbing story revolving around a 26 year old policeman who gets married to a 16 year old schoolgirl without even dating after a chance encounter at a party. How the parents of the girl agree to this I have no idea! Only in Japan would this kind of thing be acceptable. It's a pleasant enough movie targeted to teen girls around the same age as the heroine about the highs and lows of the couple's relationship. There's the added charm of Japanese heart throb Kazuya Kamenashi to make the girls swoon at him in a policeman's outfit. Tao Tsuchiya is good as the 16 year old schoolgirl Kako though why she feels the need to settle down so early in life with an older man instead of enjoying her youth is beyond my comprehension. The scenery showing the city of Hakodate in Hokkaido is beautiful. Despite the dubious nature of the story, it's definitely watchable and those that like light romance movies will enjoy it.

Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn (1983)
The evil Jared-Syn terrorises the small desert planet of Lemuria by sucking the lifeforce out of folks with his storage crystals. It's up to heroic ranger Dogan to stop the foul villain. While the basic premise offers a pretty cool blend of Western and science fiction elements complete with the inevitable gunslinger showdown in the middle of a tiny mining town and a fierce tribe of Cyclopean beings standing in for your usual savage Indians, the movie is undermined by Charles Band's leaden direction, a plodding pace and crappy special effects. The ending to this is quite anticlimactic and disappointing but getting there provides some degree of fun. If you can turn off your brain for 83 minutes, you might like it
