I'm not too sure exactly what 'American Fable' was trying to be. It's listed as a thriller, and there are elements to it that could certainly make it a thriller, only it doesn't feel like a thriller. The problem is I'm not sure exactly what it does feel like. It's a story that kind of just drifts along until it ends. I suspect writer/director Anne Hamilton had a vision for this movie which was to entrance the audience and create an almost fairy tale like world. Sadly though, she just seemed to find the nothingness middle ground of everything. I think that's the biggest problem with the movie is that it never commits to any direction and it never dares to be anything great. I think Hamilton had the idea right somewhere along the line, she just perhaps didn't have the writing and film making skills to put it together. Check it out and see what you think of it.

This is a great love and life story about one woman fighting for her right to be happy and another trying to figure out how can she really be happy. Each of them is the answer to the other. The script could feature more insight, but then again, the movie is supposed to be subtle and let the images speak for themselves. The cinematography is outstanding and the score is downright superb. There's a feeling, a certain atmosphere that makes the movie a one of a kind.
But in the end, I think that it all comes down to Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, as they give unforgettable, brilliant performances. They are always great, but here there's something remarkable about their performances. Some might find the movie slow moving but it is never boring. It definitely deserves to be seen.

Billed as the first colour sci-fi movie from Japan, this story has man-sized starfish creatures with a huge eye turning up in Tokyo to warn the human race that a huge glowing planetoid is on a collision course with the Earth. They have a solution on how to destroy it but the nations of the planet refuse to believe them.
You have to forgive the cheap special effects since the movie was made over 60 years ago before the invention of CGI but the story and the acting in the movie is better then you would have expected. It's also interesting to note that the story is about using nuclear weapons for survival instead of destruction. It's probably not a classic movie one would like but it's still fairly good.

What an incredible movie this is! I absolutely loved Get Out as both a psychological and satirical horror, Jordan Peele's imagination bringing us something quite unique within the genre and showing that he has such a big future ahead as a filmmaker. Right from the opening sequence, which is one of the best openings to a horror I've seen, I knew this movie was going to be special. It felt almost as if I was watching something from a seasoned director and not a man making his directorial debut, Peele exuding confidence more and more as the movie rises through the levels of paranoia. The writing for the story is spot on as well.
As for the acting, this excels above many horror movies with a talented and strong cast. Daniel Kaluuya leads with a quite exceptional performance as Chris Washington, impressing with each passing minute as the paranoia within his character grows. Expect to see much more of Kaluuya in the future. Bradley Whitford and Catherine Keener are both devilishly charming and unnerving with their performances as Rose's parents, who take an immediate interest in Chris' life, both past and present. I don't want to spoil anything with the plot so just go and watch this movie. It's a blast from start to finish and you won't regret having watched it.

An old man who's been killed by a gambling mobster comes back to inhabit the body of a mentally handicapped young man and help his granddaughter in extracting revenge by taking the mobster's money in various gambling games.
This is a rare Taiwanese action fantasy comedy starring the bad ass female martial artist Yukari Oshima (with her voice dubbed over). Those expecting this to be full of action set pieces will be disappointed because there are only a few but the ones that are shown are really good. The majority of this movie is a comedy which is fairly funny at times with the ghost of the dead old man escaping from heaven with 2 angels dressed as punks coming after him. I expected more from this movie and whilst it's one of the better Taiwanese action comedy movies from the early 90's I've seen I was still left a little wanting in the end. One to perhaps watch if you've got nothing better to see.

The story of Beach Boys leader Brian Wilson is worthy of a movie. Neither his creative genius or his mental illness were appreciated until years after the fact. His childhood, as was Michael Jackson's 15 years later , shaped the adult life he inherited. His creative genius allowed and encouraged him to be used by others. The story is very interesting. The casting very good, the acting excellent. John Cusack hasn't been this good with Elizabeth Banks also pulling in a fine performance. Paul Dano is also brilliant. The only problem I found was it does go on for far too long but if you're a fan of The Beach Boys and their music you'll enjoy this movie.

This is a movie that I was on the fence about seeing, simply because it seemed like just another movie about a whistle blower. It is so much more than that. It is about journalistic integrity, corporate greed, good vs. evil, and standing up for what you believe in, no matter what the cost. It pulls no punches about how far the tobacco industry would go to hide the truth from the American public about cigarettes, but it never seems propagandised. Russell Crowe and Al Pacino give top notch performances. They have the perfect blend of chemistry and timing, and fit their characters like a glove. They completely inhabit their roles and at times it seems more like a documentary than a fictional story.
From beginning to end, it has the kind of edge of your seat tension that keeps one glued to the screen. Despite being a fairly lengthy movie, it moves at a quick pace, and is absolutely riveting. The direction is superb, the camera angles are fast and furious, and it is a delight to watch.

This was quite a unique movie for me because it wasn't what I expected it to be and it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Anne Hathaway can be hit or miss for me, but she was excellent here. She plays Gloria, a blackout-prone alcoholic that for some reason can conjure a giant monster that destroys parts of Seoul. She is good in this movie as she presents great range with her character, easily juggling between being quirky, powerful, funny, and completely vulnerable. Don't be misled into thinking this is a kaiju movie because it isn't. It only features monsters as an allegory for domestic violence. Apart from Anne Hathaway, Jason Sudeikis also gives a very good performance as Gloria's foil. I think this movie will split opinion in viewers but I thought it was a refreshing take on looking at an abusive relationship.

Ruth is a seven month old pregnant woman with cravings though they aren't normal as other women. Ruth's cravings are a good deal darker. Egged on by the voice of her unborn baby girl Ruth gets a craving to kill people and it would seem with justification since all of her victims were, in some way, responsible for the death of her baby's father.
This movie in case you hadn't guessed it, is a comedy and a very black one. It was written and directed by Alice Lowe. She also plays the lead character Ruth and was pregnant in real life whilst filming this movie. Naturally, this isn't a movie that will appeal to everyone, (I think pregnant mothers should stay well clear), but if you have a very sick sense of humour and like gore then give it a go.

Right from the first moments the movie grips you in its vice and never lets go. There's a mystery at work here, and I had a lot of fun trying to figure out what was going on as the movie fed me small hints here and there before finally revealing all of its secrets near the end. There's not a whole lot I can say about the movie's plot without giving away too much, but I can say that the plot is excellent and gripping. The story may seem slightly outlandish, but it's grounded by wonderful performances by actors Dane DeHaan, Mia Goth and Jason Isaacs. It's also a real head trip at times. At times you may question whether you're witnessing a real movie or just having a bizarre dream. But that's all part of the atmosphere and is definitely to the movie's benefit. The story is top notch. The cinematography is wonderful and helps with the tense atmosphere. The acting is spot on in every aspect. Director Gore Verbinski has tight control on reins, and the result is nothing less than a spectacular and original piece of film. Very enjoyable.

A very well made Belgian satire about religion and God. This extremely imaginative movie turns the Bible inside out and puts it upside down. God is married to a dim-witted goddess, and has a young daughter who decides to expand the number of apostles from twelve to eighteen, because that is the number of players in a baseball game. During the movie, she finds six extra apostles, each of whom has some peculiarity. One is extremely beautiful but has only one arm, another one is sex obsessed since his early childhood, and one is trading in her husband for a gorilla from the zoo!
The movie is filled to the brim with visual flair: when Man is created and wandering the Earth, his groin is censored. The man notices this and tries to get rid of this black bar covering his manhood, but to no avail! There's great comedy strewn about this movie, but some of the funniest bits involve God having trouble getting used to life on Earth. After spending so long creating sadistic rules, it's hilarious to see him get a taste of his own medicine. Not every story told in the movie is funny but on the whole this is a cool movie that I enjoyed.

A young kebab shop owner goes psycho on his drunken customers when his father dies after being attacked outside the shop. It's a good low budget horror which captures the dark side of UK booze culture in a very entertaining way. The camera work captures the depravity that exists in UK nightlife in a way that is all too real for anybody who has been in a kebab shop past 11pm on a weekend. The creators have not held back on the realism of the most horrid scenes. Weak stomachs beware, there is no holding back! The characters are well thought out. Sadly, we have all met people who fit the bill, the cast does them all great justice. The realness of these horrible people is scarily accurate and really sucks you into the dark side of UK nightlife.
