This movie based on a true story is about a British explorer named Percy Fawcett who while on a survey mission in the Amazon discovers evidence that the "savages" once had a civilization the might even be older than the one he came from and spends his life trying to find it. This movie does such a great job making Fawcett's life look fascinating, following him through his time with the army to his time as an explorer but I'm sure some viewers will find it rather dull. The pace of the movie can be rather slow at times. Charlie Hunnam in the lead role of Percy Fawcett gets his meatiest role to date, and Sienna Miller is quite good as his wife Nina. But the big surprise is surely Robert Pattinson, unrecognizable as Fawcett's sidekick Henry Costin. I didn't even know it was him until I saw his name in the end credits! Overall, although the movie is a tad slow, I did find it an engaging historical adventure epic. It's worth your time in taking a look at it.

Three legends of the horror genre come together in this little seen British occult movie: Christopher Lee, Boris Karloff and Barbara Steele. The plot is about a young antiques dealer visiting a spooky looking mansion in search of his missing brother, only to uncover a witchcraft cult. There may be no blood in this movie but it is very atmospheric and at times psychedelic. Christopher Lee is great as he always is and Boris Karloff shines in one of his last roles as an eccentric old witchcraft expert. Barbara Steele stands out as the green skinned witch Lavina complete with a bizarre horned crown. This movie was apparently panned upon it's release. Why I have no idea as it's quite a good movie and great fun to watch. It is certainly not highly memorable in any aspect except for the cast, but what a cast that is! Worth a watch just for that alone.

A remarkable French horror about a young woman who starts craving for raw human meat after a practical joke whilst at vet school. How many times have you seen a movie with a storyline about a young woman becoming a cannibal? Director Julia Ducournau has created a stir with this movie with numerous walk outs happening wherever this was screened. Garance Marillier is brilliant as the lead character Justine who starts transforming from a shy lifelong vegetarian into an animalistic bloodthirsty unhinged cannibal desperate for raw meat. Raw isn't for everybody - it's really twisted. I wouldn't even say a horror fan will like it. It has an art-house feel to it that may turn some people away. But it is a bold movie which will run inside your mind after the end credits have finished.

A documentary about one of the world's best football players whose talent on the pitch was blighted by his drinking which would ultimately kill him. He was the first ever celebrity footballer which would pave the way for superstars such as David Beckham etc. Nobody can doubt how good he really was, the man was exceptional when the ball came to him. He had it all and he threw it all away. Once he started drinking, everything else didn't really matter. It's very sad how his life unravelled and no matter how many people tried to help him it was up to him to break free from alcoholism. It isn't easy. You could say his life was like a Greek tragedy. He died quite young at 59 years old. This documentary not only showcases the highs in his playing career but also the lows and the sad end for him. George Best hopefully will be remembered for his wonderful sporting talent and not for the other issues in his life. A great documentary.

Although billed as a Yukari Oshima actioner, she only features in this movie for the first 30 mins before mysteriously disappearing with no explanation. The plot as such is Interpol wants to kill drug lords and to do this they use 3 beautiful female agents. There is plenty of gun battles, explosions and drama to keep most Asian movie action fans entertained. The last 30 mins features non-stop violence as the female agents ruthlessly mow down henchmen of various drug lords before eliminating the boss. It's true that there are better Girls With Guns movies out there but the high speed of the violent action makes sure you won't be bored.

One of the many sensationalist documentaries that came out during the 70's to prove that alien beings and UFO's exist. The host Donn Davison tries to tell the viewer through accounts from eye witnesses and blurry photographs/videos that without a shadow of a doubt UFO's are visiting this planet. Davison also investigates Bigfoot and psychics trying to pinpoint the location of Atlantis. At the time I'm sure some people would have been convinced enough to believe everything that is said here is true. However, since this time there has been better evidence and more interesting documentaries to make the viewer think again and this one looks phony and poorly made. Fine to watch once but has nothing earth shattering to convince you that something is out there.

A delightful British comedy about Anna, a woman approaching 30 years of age who lives in a shed at the bottom of her mother's garden and refuses to move on with her life after the death of her twin brother. It takes a little boy Clint whose mother is dying of cancer to make her realise that she has to face closure and go forward. It's one of those movies with quirky characters, amusing dialogue and an uplifting theme. Jodie Whittaker in what I believe is her first leading role in a movie (she usually appears in TV dramas) does very well as Anna and you can relate to her troubles - the struggle of letting go a loss so great that one thinks her life will never be the same, that it's impossible to move on. Despite this, it's not a morbid movie at all. It's full of comedy. Overall I thought this was a great movie which is worth watching.

The 5th Transformers movie and hopefully Michael Bay's last as the director in the franchise is absolutely terrible (the whole franchise as a whole has been bad IMHO). Awful script with scenes melded together in a disjointed manner and completely dumb dialogue. What you call a typical Michael Bay movie really and an excuse to set off a lot of explosions (he sure likes his pyrotechnics!). It's basically two and half hours of pure nonsense. I like Mark Wahlberg as an actor but he is poor in this movie and such a shame to see Anthony Hopkins being dragged into this shambles (although I'm sure money was a big motivation!). On the whole a tedious movie to sit through.

CHIPS was one of my favourite cop shows from the 70's so when I heard that they were going to make this movie into a buddy comedy I wasn't too impressed. After having watched this movie however and thinking I wasn't going to like it I've changed my mind and was pleasantly surprised. This movie was really funny and packed full of laughs. There is some action but the majority of this movie is all about the raunchy humour. Plot wise its pretty predictable but that doesn't really matter. Dax Shepard and Michael Pena play off each other well enough and you don't mind following them through this story. There's even a cameo appearance from Erik Estrada (the original Ponch from the TV series) right near the end. Don't listen to what the critics are saying about this movie - it's funny and wild; pure entertainment. Just sit back, relax and laugh.

This is one of the best anime movie you'll ever see and close to perfection. Makoto Shinkai has come up with a masterpiece. The plot is thought-provoking and touching, with much to say and explored expertly and neatly with no heavy-handedness. The storytelling engages throughout and hooks you into its world and never lets go. The 2 main characters are well thought out and their chemistry with each other is heartfelt. It's superbly paced, perfectly edited so not to make a mess of the constant jumps. The animation is stunning, so beautifully and intricately drawn with immaculate attention to detail in the backgrounds. The soundtrack by Radwimps is also fantastic. I could go on for ages how good this movie is. Bottom line: Your Name is a spellbinding movie that you really need to see. Prepare to be surprised by its beauty and twisting story.

A brilliant documentary about one of the best rock bands in the world: X-Japan. Having been a fan for 18 years I loved everything about this movie. It charts X-Japan's colourful history from 1982 and the incidents that have rocked the band (the lead vocalist Toshi being brainwashed for 10 years by a cult, the suicide death of their lead guitarist Hide and the sacking of another member Taiji for reasons unknown to the fans). It reveals the ups and downs, times of happiness and pain, about overcoming and moving forward. This documentary culminates with X-Japan's epic reunion gig at Madison Square Garden. Their leader Yoshiki has an aura about him, it's hard to explain the bond he has with fans. He is just incredible. I hope this movie will garner new fans for the group. If you love rock or music in general then you have to see this memorable documentary.

A slowmoving psychological drama about a woman with a mental state that's on a downward spiral after her father died. It has a bit of a eerie 70's mystery feeling to it stylewise both visually and emotionally (even though it takes place in now time). But instead of getting intrigued I just found it rather dull instead, perhaps a bit to do with the fact that I didn't find anything particularly likable about any of the characters (or interesting for that matter) and they were all fairly self-absorbed. Some scenes just go on forever with mumbling monologues of which I often found myself not knowing what exactly they were talking about because for one they mumbled quietly and also the eerie music was really loud, so that didn't really help, and the ending is rather abrupt. So yeah what can I say, not for me I guess.

Bong Joon Ho's newest movie is part sentimental childhood adventure, part hardcore animal activism movie and part surreal R-rated dark comedy. It's about a GM super pig created by the agrichemical corporation Mirando that's been raised in the wilds of South Korea as a potential solution to global hunger. Mirando comes back to claim the super pig and take her back to the US for consumption. Her young owner Mija though refuses to give up her pet without a fight. The movie doesn't flinch around its unsubtle messages about animals, factory farming and GM foods, to say the least. Some might be taken aback or even appalled at the unapologetic hardcore animal liberation themes, which include graphic, uncomfortable scenes of sadistic animal abuse, and even holocaust allusions. Seo-Hyun Ahn is wonderful as Mija, Okja's loving companion, and the first 30 minutes or so that focuses on their relationship is the strongest material here. The less said about Jake Gyllenhaal the better. He is so embarassing as a wacky, perpetually drunk, borderline psychotic television host. Tilda Swanson is hopeless as well. The movie goes on for far too long. A good 30 mins needed to be cut. Okja is a moderately entertaining affair, but there's no question in my mind that it Bong's least impressive movie to date.

This is a great London-based love story with a twist about a female investment banker and an out of work actor whose relationship veers off the rails towards crime. Set entirely in a minimalist London townhouse, it follows their relationship from the beginning where neither trusts one another and it just builds from there. Jack Gordon and Rebecca Calder are excellent as the couple. It's not a fast movie and it involves a lot of talking but it is richly rewarding. I didn't know what to expect from this movie having heard so little about it but it was well worth checking out.

Lackluster HK action comedy about a group of new armed female police officers on the job. I was expecting an all action movie and although the set pieces on show are entertaining, it concentrates mostly on the silly situations the new recruits gets up to. Carrie Ng is probably the best out of all the cast. Quite disappointing.
