The Red Turtle
There are certain movies that touch you forever and The Red Turtle is one of them. Using beautiful animation and music the story delivers with no dialogue. Michael Dudok de Wit weaves a deceptively simple story into a tapestry of life, survival and love. This is not a story for children or movie goers that are looking for the next CGI high. However, for anyone with a heart and longing for a beautiful tale, this is a movie for you. Amazing.

This is the continuation to the Gantz story which covers the Osaka saga in the manga. What stands out more than anything in this movie is the CGI. It is absolutely incredible and it's easy to be blown away by what you see. The industry has always had trouble getting humans right, but that being said the work in this one is just perfect. The monsters that rampage around Osaka are absolutely crazy with weird designs. The action scenes are exciting and thrilling. You can enjoy the movie even if you're a novice to the Gantz franchise as the rules of the game are explained to the viewer. All that's left to say is just sit back and enjoy one hell of a ride!

The Boxer from Shantung
Classic rags to riches Shaw Brothers martial arts movie about a simple young man Ma who wants to become a legendary gangster like his mentor Tan Si but in doing so he crosses paths with another gangster Boss Yang. There are numerous fights but nothing can match the brutal extended final fight when Ma takes on Yang's army and his Four Kings. It is bloody and Ma has to fight them all with an ax stuck to his stomach. Chen Kuan-tai is fantastic as Ma and excels as a fighter. Even though he's a small time gangster, one can't help but like him as a character as he looks after the poor and his old friends. John Woo who was the assistant director on this movie drew inspiration from this story and transferred them to his own work. This movie has got it all - a great storyline, good acting, superb fight choreography and a nice soundtrack. All martial arts movie fans should seek this out.

Death Note: Light Up the New World
The 4th Death Note movie is a step up from the L spin-off but it still cannot hold a candle to the first 2 movies. Set 10 years after Kira's death, a spate of mysterious deaths flare up again in Tokyo and the police hunt for the killer who they call Neo Kira. Once more the movie is a cat and mouse game between L's successor and Neo Kira. It's great to see Misa Amane and Ryuk again and there are hints that Light himself might still be alive. The new characters introduced are interesting enough but nothing beats Light and L. There's a brisk pace to the movie with plenty of thrills and action packed scenes to satisfy Death Note fans. I really like the new Shinigamis especially the female one Arma. It's a pity that the ending is a bit of a mess and rather implausible. Good acting by the whole cast. On the whole a decent entry in the fantastic franchise. Yes, fans will complain that it's not the same without Light and L but I enjoyed this movie and would recommend it.

Rattle of a Simple Man
Harry H Corbett plays Percy who hooks up with a pretty blonde prostitute as part of a drunken bet when he and his friends go down to London to watch the FA Cup Final. It's an amusing comedy full of dialogue between the experienced worldly prostitute and the shy and awkward Percy as they dance around the issue. Can she entice him to bed or will he lose his bet and return, ashamed, back to his friends before the coach leaves at midnight? Corbett literally on the verge of debuting the role of Harold Steptoe shows a little bit of that character in this movie (e.g hen pecked by his mother rather than scolded by his father). The stunning Diane Cilento as Cyrenne excels as the world-wise lady of the night who, possibly, craves the stability of a life she's overly quick to deride. This is a little gem of a movie that I really enjoyed.

W. tells a fairly neutral story about George W. Bush, one of the most controversial presidents in US history, his rise to the presidency includes bits and pieces of coverage that feels familiar all the way through. There isn't much "new" interesting stuff to see, at least not for our YouTube-generation which has been enjoying watching Bush's cock-ups and controversies over and over again, and for all the intimate stuff - it doesn't get all that intimate (apart from a drunken quarrel that sees Dubya asking Bush Senior to fight him!). The performances are very good, especially Josh Brolin as the main man, Richard Dreyfuss as Dick Cheney, James Cromwell as Bush Senior and Thandie Newton as Condoleezza Rice. Tedious at times, but picks up halfway through as Bush faces himself in different situations. The ending feels weird though, as it isn't really an end, more as a sudden stop. Didn't feel anything special from this movie to be honest. Fine to watch once perhaps.

Anybody expecting a fun action movie in the same vein as the Brendan Fraser Mummy trilogy are going to be disappointed with this movie. It lacks what made that trilogy so entertaining. The script is a bit confusing and I've no idea why the character of Dr Jekyll was included. The special effects were good, but the rest of the movie lacked any solid foundation. Apart from Sofia Boutella, the rest of the cast wasn't very good. Tom Cruise is usually very reliable in his movies but pulled in a cringeworthy performance here. Russell Crowe and Annabelle Wallis didn't do much better. Not a good start to the "Dark Universe" that Universal are trying to do.

Baywatch
Nobody wanted a cinematic remake of the campy 90's show that cemented David Hasselhoff's enduring legacy as the butt of all jokes. But alas, here it is anyway, in all its mickey-taking glory. And it's actually better than you would think. Turning up the tongue-in-cheek humour to maximum levels, this updated version throws in everything but the kitchen sink to garner a laugh: toilet and genital gags, racy double entendres, ironic meta-jokes, and ludicrous slow-mo shots. Whilst it's more of a quantity over quality plan of attack—resulting in its fair share of jokes that fall flat — there's a giddy energy that keeps it afloat, with a cast who are game to poke fun at the stereotypes they're playing. Dwayne Johnson is the beefcake leader, Zac Efron is the thrill seeking renegade, Alexandra Daddario is the hardworking rookie, Kelly Rohrback is the sexy blonde bombshell and Jon Bass is the goofy sidekick; and all ham it up wonderfully. When it veers into action territory it loses momentum and interest. A couple of the bigger set pieces, including the finale, are drowned out with cluttered editing, shaky camera-work and poor CGI. Those sporadic actions sequences threaten to sink proceedings but with its no-holds-barred comedic onslaught and enthusiastically self-deprecating performances, Baywatch is a fun time at the beach.

Wonder Woman
Wonder Woman is a pleasing movie in a sea of other superhero flicks and one of the best in the DCEU. What it gets right is a good mix of action and narrative helped by the back drop of World War I. While arguably it lags in the final act, mainly due to the seeming obligatory big boss final battle showdown it for the most part swiftly moves along. Part new origin story on the island of Themyscira, home to the Amazons, you see the character honing her powers and becoming Wonder Woman. Later when she helps a British intelligence spy and they journey to France, she's finds that she is a fish out of water in her new surroundings in searching for Ares, the god of war. Gal Gadot may not be everyone's idea of what Diana Prince/Wonder Woman should look like, however, she is great in the role carrying the naive innocence having been on a hidden island almost all of her life with the power and presence that we saw glimpses of in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Chris Pine also does well in his role of Steve Trevor who aids Wonder Woman. This is probably one of the most rounded entertaining super hero movies out there. It's not the best I've seen but it's definitely one you should seek out to watch.

Mindhorn (2016)
Mindhorn is the ultimate treat for anyone who has an appreciation for ludicrous humour. Set on the beautiful Isle of Man, it follows a washed-up actor who had a hit action detective show Mindhorn from the 80's. He has to reprise the role when the police need his help following a murder by a villain who goes by the name of The Kestrel. This is a very funny comedy. I think to appreciate the movie just that little bit more, you really have to be of a certain age when these awfully cheesy police shows were rife on the TV back in the 80's. Granted, the UK never had anything as over the top as Mindhorn, but it did have shows like Dempsey & Makepeace and C.A.T.S Eyes. The actors look like they're having a ball led by Julian Barratt who plays the leading role and wrote the script. Overall Mindhorn is a good British action comedy movie filled with action, some violence, funny moments, tongue and cheek stuff, swearing, some odd strange moments and stunning scenery of the Isle Of Man. Well worth taking a look.

The movie started rather slowly but did have some promise. The acting was acceptable and special effects were adequate. However, by midpoint it became obvious this movie was going downhill fast. The movie's ending leaves you scratching your head in total bewilderment and thinking "why the hell did I watch this movie"? Also,the premise that a group of seven year old children being a physical threat (with no weapons) to three fully grown adults puts this movie in the category of fantasy rather than science fiction. Do yourself a favor and avoid this movie at all costs.

When Taekwondo Strikes
aka Sting Of The Dragon Masters. The original female Chinese bad ass Angela Mao stars in this movie set during the Japanese occupation of Korea in the 1930's in which she joins the Korean resistance against the nasty occupiers of their country. This is a great martial arts movie in which the viewer gets to see a young Sammo Hung play one of the villainous Japanese men. There is a fight scene roughly every 5 mins so there is plenty of action on display. This is one of Angela Mao's strongest roles in a movie. She has an incredible screen presence and doesn't disappoint as she takes on a variety of bad guys with no mercy shown towards them. No wonder she was the Queen of Kung Fu during the 70's. If you want to see power packed kung fu action from the '70s then look no further than this.
