Hacksaw Ridge is not a movie for the faint-hearted. Right away the opening scenes portray the horror of war, and the emotional journey is only beginning as the audience is led through the story of war-hero Desmond Doss. One of the great feats of storytelling from Mel Gibson as director and Andrew Garfield is to lead the audience along Doss' journey with a feeling of having experienced the journey as Doss, and experiencing the wide range of emotions endured by this heroic character along his journey. The supporting roles add depth, with both script and performance making very few, if any, of the supporting characters two dimensional. Vince Vaughn's excellent turn as Doss' training sergeant provides both humour and pathos to bring laughs and pause- for-thought at well scripted points of the tale, allowing the audience to gather their breath. By the end of the movie, audience members will leave the cinema feeling tired, worn out by having experienced Doss' journey of hope, innocence, love, confusion, anger, faith, and courage. Hacksaw Ridge is in no way a popcorn-lazy-Sunday-afternoon movie; it is a journey. Highly recommended.

Kumiko, a Japanese office lady who lives in Tokyo, has only one hobby : treasures. She doesn't have any friends, and is really bored by her job. After seeing a VHS of "Fargo", she decides to travel to North Dakota to find the money hidden by Carl Showalter in the movie. This is a gem of a movie. Rinko Kikuchi appears under a new face with this introvert and amazing character, inspired by a true story. Director David Zellner really did a good job of balancing comedy and drama - never exaggeratively funny, nor never desperately sad, the directing is very subtle and finds its own way to create an atmosphere around the point of view of an unusual character that sees the work differently than most of people do. Which is, sometimes, really refreshing. Very enjoyable.

Borrowing ideas from various Japanese horrors, this Korean movie is fairly standard one about a mysterious website The White Room which kills several women making their stomach swell up to look like they are pregnant. Unlike Ringu whose video killed people in 7 days, this deadly website takes 15 to do the same thing. It's not a particularly scary movie at all although it has one or two creepy moments. The movie might be well made and all that but at the end of the day it just doesn't have anything going for it. For Asian horror completists only.

A mother and daughter get stranded out in some woods when their car breaks down after hitting a wolf on a road. Soon though they are stalked by a menacing monster. I take this movie for what it is, a low-budget independent 'monster flick'. It's left up to you really to fill in the blank as far as what or who the monsters in the movie are. That being said and with low expectations going in, I enjoyed this movie. While we don't get much of a plot and the monster itself is not explained or developed, I did appreciate the acting by both of the female actors. In fact the acting is what kept this movie going in my opinion. I also liked that the monster is not CGI, which was refreshing. There are some powerful emotional aspects in terms of the flawed relationship between mother and daughter which have been played out, but it is very convincing nonetheless. Some might call this movie boring but I didn't think it was. This is a great horror flick with some heavy symbolism which deserves a chance by viewers. Give it a go.

The 13th One Piece movie is one of the best in the franchise as The Straw Hat Pirates visit Gran Tesoro, a dazzling entertainment ship that is run like a city. They are treated like VIPs there and quickly become obsessed with gambling. However, as you might guess, their luck doesn’t last long. Everything aboard the ship is golden and shiny as its owner, Gild Tesoro who has the power to manipulate gold. But the dark side of the city is soon revealed: child beggars, enslaved workers and a “bottomless hell” to which those who cannot pay their debts are banished, all form parts of Gild Tesoro’s sinister plan. The movie is spectacular with excellent set pieces as Luffy and his friends come up against a formidable opponent in Gild Tesoro. The viewer also gets to meet somebody from Nami's past - a female thief Carina who used to team up with her. There's also some cameos from characters we haven't seen for a while. The animation is as good as ever especially the scenes inside Gran Tesoro with it's streets quite literally paved with gold. Although I felt the movie went far too long at a shade over 2 hrs, overall I really enjoyed it. The storyline is interesting and exciting. One Piece fans do not want to miss out on this one.

It's good to be back in JK Rowling's wizarding world again even though this story is set way before Harry Potter comes on the scene. With a cast headed by the supremely talented Eddie Redmayne, as Newt Scamander, this movie immerses us once more into a place where the world of wizard and No-Maj (American for Muggle) collide. You absolutely do not have to watch any of the Harry Potter movies to understand any of the references to Muggles, Hogwarts and the like (although it helps if you have), this movie is a story on its own and we are introduced to a whole new collection of characters and magical beasts, some of which are cute and some downright weird. Excellent visual effects, and a screenplay which includes more than a few lighthearted moments. Another smash from the wizarding world and I eagerly await the next instalment.

A very touching and moving story about an old railway station master who works in a remote area of snow bound Hokkaido. The movie revolves around the station closing down due to dwindling passengers and flashbacks to the life of the station master who sacrificed his own life with his family to dedicate himself to his job. It's about a man tormented by guilt about the death of his baby daughter and wife. It might be easy to tarnish this movie as slow and plodding with nothing happening but that's exactly what the story is all about. A reflection of a man's life through the ages through his job and the people he met and worked with. The cinematography is nothing short of breathtaking. The snowy scenes somewhere in Hokkaido is fantastic. Ken Takakura is excellent as the railroad man and the final scenes in the movie will no doubt make a lot of people cry.

Jess Franco's contribution to the zombie genre and to be perfectly honest he shouldn't have bothered in the first place! It makes no sense plot-wise and it's as dull as hell. The acting is atrocious. The special effects are so bad they go beyond being laughable. Oasis of the Zombies has to be one of the worst excuses for a movie I've ever had the misfortune of attempting to watch. Don't go near this pile of cack.

Shot in moody black & white, the story sees a young paralysed woman return to her family home in France to visit her father who she hasn't seen for years; and to finally meet her new step-mother. Upon arrival she is informed that her father has had to go away on business, which becomes a problem as she starts to see his dead body, first in the summer house, then in the lounge! This excellent Hammer movie might be predictable in the story as you can see everything coming but it's in the atmosphere and great use of sound coupled with the awesome acting of the cast that makes this so good. Christopher Lee (who plays a French doctor here) once said that this was one of the best Hammer Horror movie he was ever involved with, that's a fine selling point to be sure. A different kind of Hammer Horror, one that drips with dread and thrives on its mystery elements. Taste Of Fear is highly recommended to genre fans who prefer psychological chillers over blood letting and overkilled boo jump movies.

This is a reboot movie of the tokusatsu show Kikaider that was shown during the early 70's in Japan. Those expecting to see a camp movie along the likes of Ultraman featuring monsters threatening Japan will be surprised to see that there's nothing of the kind here and this movie is rather serious with a dark storyline. The original Kikaider series also had some comedic relief for the kids - not so in this reboot. The new and modern take on Kikaider might upset pure fans but I rather enjoyed this movie. The storyline is fast and exciting and is all about what makes Kikaider a little bit human (a conscience circuit inside his metal body) than his deadly android opponent who exploits this to the full. Tokusatsu fans should like this movie. It's far superior to other recent campy movies in the genre.

A wonderful feel-good Japanese movie about how one person can inspire you to reach for your dreams and in this case it's a cram school teacher who helps a young blonde girl with no future to realise her true potential. True, it's not groundbreaking by any means. But is it interesting? Is it emotionally gripping? And most importantly, is it memorable? This is all three, and more. Taking literally the best parts of what characterizes Japanese movies - over the top acting, narrative exposition, classic tugs at the heart-strings moments and melodramatic long pauses - this movie pulls great screen writing, direction and acting to produce what has to be the best two hours to come out of mainstream Japanese cinema in a very long time. I loved this movie and so will you!
