Resident Evil: The Final Chapter
The video game adaptation franchise finally concludes but not on a high, just another below average action movie that doesn't really succeed. I did like the first couple of movies but it has steadily gone downhill in the last few instalments. Alice (Milla Jovovich) survived the war in Washington D.C. and roams the streets. She hasn't seemed to learn from her five other movies, still walking into traps and finding herself in trouble. Alice ducks, flips, and shoots her way out of dire circumstances on more than one occasion. The action would be a lot more fun to watch if there weren't some many cuts that make for confusing action and hurts the narrative, a signature of Paul W.S. Anderson's directing style. Milla Jovovich does her best with the weak script handed to her. It's not the worst in the franchise but it's not the best either. I would only recommend this for hardcore fans only.

Monster Trucks
A young loner discovers a squid like monster in a junkyard and finds he can use it to power his truck. Soon he befriends the monster and sets out to help it find it's way home. Great special effects and some good performances from some likable lead actors makes this an enjoyable movie to watch. Don't expect the plot to hold up to well under strict scrutiny but it is a kids movie after all. There are some good positive messages about family and friends with a little bit of a green message too but nothing heavy handed. The monster is very likable and the movie has some funny moments too. Kids should enjoy this very much.

Split
Even though I have no regrets watching this movie, I found it - to put it bluntly well, 'meh.' That being said, I don't mean to discredit James McAvoy for his role as Kevin and the few other personalities. It is absolutely worth mentioning that he delivered each character very well. Unfortunately, McAvoy's outstanding deliverance is probably the best thing, this movie has to offer. The movie misses at many points, that it left me wondering what it actually wanted from us. Overall it's an average horror-thriller movie, which does not belong to Shyamalan's worst work, or his best. The plot is very predictable and won't leave you surprised. Still, it is not a bad movie and worth the watch, because of the performances of the cast.

Lion is a truly exceptional movie and this story will stay with me forever. The casting, the story, the cinematography and the amazing music was done perfectly and I actually cannot fault this movie. The performances are all topnotch (especially Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman). It is mind blowing and makes you appreciate how lucky you are to have whatever it is you have in a seriously humbling way. If you appreciate good movies, this one is a must.

Nocturnal Animals
Nocturnal Animals is a very good movie! Director Tom Ford creates a suspenseful, thriller type atmosphere that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Amy Adams is spectacular in every sense of the word. Jake Gyllenhaal is brilliant as he always is. Tom Ford's work and effort is astonishing in every single detail put in this movie. The script and overall theme of this movie is perfect! The ending leaves the viewer to reflect upon our decision making and the choices we choose to make in life and how that will cost us in the end. The conclusion to this nerve-shredding movie is filled with twists that no one will see coming. It's gripping, thrilling, and captivating.

A Japanese movie that hides it's dark storyline from the viewer until halfway through. It starts out as a bit of a comedy revolving around 2 losers with one taking a shine to a young waitress in a cafe. I'm not going to say anymore about the plot because the less you know the better it is. All I'll say is there are twists and turns and an interesting storyline about people getting hurt in the past. Go Morita from the boy band V6 gives an incredible performance as a psychopath. This is that kind of movie that keeps you on the edge of your seat. If you like your thrillers dark then seek this out.

Soapbox Derby
A classic CFF movie featuring a young teenage Michael Crawford as the leader of a gang called The Battersea Bats. They get embroiled in a rivalry with another gang The Victorian Victors. Both gangs put their names into the hat for a Soapbox Derby race. The rivalry gets personal when the Victorian Victors start using dirty tricks in order to get one up on the Battersea Bats. It's such a brilliant children's movie and all the better for the location shooting around London. I'm sure much of the buildings shown in this movie are long gone now so as such it's a great timepiece of London at the end of the 50's. Michael Crawford is on top form here and is a bit of a tough guy as well as Peter Toms who doesn't hold back in fighting against the rivals' leader. There's a rather ugly looking car on show here as well in the Italian built Isetta. Trendy and nippy at the time I'm sure but naff looking these days! All in all, a very watchable and enjoyable little movie.

A pair of Portuguese Catholic priests go to Japan to determine the fate of their former mentor. Instead they mostly administer to a small villages of faithful Japanese Christians. This they must do in secret as the Japanese authorities have cracked down hard on those found to be practising in an effort to stamp out the 'foreign cancer'. Thus sets the scene for Andrew Garfield's Padre's faith to be severely tested. Despite the interesting story which sees many people suffer and go through hell for their faith, the main problem with this movie is it's length. At nearly 2 and three quarter hours it goes on for too long and it will be difficult for many people to keep their attention. It's hard work, and unlikely to be a movie I will ever re-watch. The movie's score is made up predominantly of ambiance and natural sounds which is different and a bold move by director Martin Scorsese. The acting is outstanding. Andrew Garfield carries the movie expertly and without ever wavering. Adam Driver and Liam Neeson are also brilliant. The Japanese cast which includes Yรดsuke Kubozuka and Tadanobu Asano also deserve mention for their sterling performances. Silence is a very well made movie, with an interesting story and if you can stand the long running time you might get something out of it.

Manchester by the Sea
This movie is a masterpiece in every sense of the word. Beautiful, heartbreaking, funny, and tough all at the same time. This movie puts the viewer through the ringer but earns every single moment by the end. The story is about a man who went through a terrible trauma in his past. This trauma has broken him psychologically. It's affected him so badly in that the mental scars can never be healed. He has to return to the town where the event took place as his older brother has died, leaving him in charge of his nephew. Casey Affleck gives one of the best performances I've seen in years. Career defining work. Michelle Williams doesn't have a lot of screen time in the movie but is amazing. There is one scene in particular that these two share towards the end of the movie, that is jaw-dropping. It's no surprise that both have been nominated for the Oscars this year. This is a truly stunning movie, and one that will live with me for many years to come. Definitely go out and see it.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage
Vin Diesel returns as Xander Cage in order to revive the xXx franchise but he shouldn't have bothered. It should have ended with the 2nd movie. I have no idea why this movie tries to emulate the Fast & Furious brand because Xander Cage doesn't need a team to help him out and what was the point of giving Neymar (of Barcelona FC) a cameo in this movie? The plot is a total mess and the acting isn't that good to be honest. Most people probably want to watch this for the action sequences and whilst they're OK it doesn't come close to matching what we saw in the 1st movie. The eye candy is good in particular Deepika Padukone. Overall I was very disappointed but not entirely surprised that it would turn out like this. If you turn off your brain and ignore all logic then I'm sure you'll enjoy this movie. I do think it's time to pull the plug on the xXx franchise.

Iceland isn't renowned for horror movies so I was intrigued to see how this one would fare. It isn't too bad, could've been better though. The story is about a bunch of tourists go whale-watching but are beset upon by Icelandic redneck fishermen who're sore about environmentalists halting their livelihood of whale-hunting. It's a slasher movie but with some welcome black humour. It's also filmed pretty well, with grainy shots for ambience. There is plenty of gore on display as well and the performance by the captain of the whale hunting ship Gunnar Hansen is creepy. I hope Iceland come out with more horror movies if they're up to the same standard as this one.

A Punch to Revenge
A good HK actioner featuring Yukari Oshima who gets involved with a police officer and the family of a disabled son in her care. It might be a by-the numbers tale of revenge and betrayal but when you've got great set pieces featuring Peter Lam and Yukari Oshima it's definitely worth watching. You'll have to suspend your disbelief what these two go through and still manage to stay alive! Lam is shot and has a circular saw blade impaled through his back and still manages to carry on fighting whilst Oshima also is shot twice at close range. Well worth checking out this little known HK movie.

Christmas on July 24th Avenue
This is a story of an ugly duckling Sayuri who is looking for her prince and sets her dream of setting foot one day on July 24th Avenue in Lisbon, Portugal. Although the story is meant to have a Christmas feel to it, it is definitely lacking in any of the holiday spirit. There's no Christmas illuminations or anything like that shown in the city of Nagasaki during this movie. This is a fairly bog standard romantic comedy with most of the genre's boxes ticked along the way. The cinematography is superb with fantastic shots of both Lisbon and Nagasaki. The leads give a decent performance - nothing special though. If romantic comedies are your kind of thing there's plenty for you to enjoy here.
