An unidentified sniper with a high-powered semi-automatic rifle is picking off the last residents of a decaying inner city tower block. He has control of the power to the building and has also set booby traps to prevent them leaving the top floor. The scene is set for a ferocious game of cat and mouse in this tense low-budget British thriller. What makes it good and watchable? The characters are everyday people believably portrayed by an accomplished cast of performers – which helps a great deal. Sheridan Smith is excellent as the heroine and Jack O'Connell stands out as Kurtis, the block's resident criminal running a protection racket on the others. Tension mounts as the group in-fight and bicker and are knocked off one by one as they try various modes of escape. Their plight is linked to the recent murder of a young man in the building whereby they failed to help the police with their enquiries. Someone seems to be holding them responsible for not contributing to the perpetrators being caught. But who? The identity of the sniper – when revealed – is a bit of a letdown and stretches credibility, but apart from that it's a gripping little piece that achieves effective results on a small budget. All in all it's a little predictable at times but still a good thriller to pass the time.

What a shame that this movie is awful. I actually liked Part 1 quite a lot. Characters were developed, story was set up, really creepy looking ghoulish giants as the enemy. Unfortunately, Part 2 is not as good as the first. Too much talking in the first hour and not enough action. If viewers are still awake during the final hour they're treated to a rumble between 3 Titans which should have been exciting but it isn't. The acting by the young cast is also ridiculously OTT. I really wanted to like this movie but I just couldn't. All the good work done in the first movie was destroyed in this one. A complete botch job by the filmmakers. Not worth bothering with really.

This true life movie follows The Boston Globe's "Spotlight" team, the oldest continuously operating newspaper investigative unit in the US, and its investigation into cases of widespread and systemic child sex abuse in the Boston area by numerous Roman Catholic priests and how the church covered it all up. This movie is amazing and captivating from the first frame. I was literally that hooked from the second the movie opened. I wanted to know more, see more, learn more. The cast was incredible, believable, real and had wonderful chemistry. In fact, not one moment passed when I didn't feel like I was a part of this real story and sitting alongside all of them. The story was fascinating, motivating, deep and intriguing. These warriors, these journalists, weren't just doing their job, they 100% believed in it and wanted to correct their own mistakes as well as the countless other demons within the catholic church. It's absorbing cinema, that shocks to the core, never succumbing to the usual clichés, is dramatic and riveting without ever patronising its audience. No wonder this movie won the best picture at the Oscars. It thoroughly deserved it. A totally brilliant movie that must not be missed.

A highly zealous puritan family in New England circa 1630 is banished from a large settlement and forced to live on their own in the uncharted spooky woods that surround the area. A year later as they forge a living together out in the wilderness, something begins to act on all of them, something devious, wicked, and insidious. Their oldest child, a daughter named Tomasin played remarkably by Anya Taylor-Joy, is taking care of her new-born baby when it is snatched away. From the beginning to the end of this movie, a unique sense of dread and fear plagues the family. There's no apt way to describe the feeling this movie is going to give you. It's a festering feeling that sits in the pit of your stomach that only gets more agitated as the images of the movie sit in the sub-conscious. The Witch is truly unique in that regard; it's a new breed of horror never before seen by the genre. If you're expecting jump-scares and piles of gore, prepare to be disappointed. This is a movie which takes its time and demonstrates mastery of several technical elements of filmmaking. The cinematography is beautifully framed, well-lit and really adds to the uneasiness 'The Witch' aims to evoke. The performances across the board are brilliant, even among the child actors. Director Robert Eggers really hit the nail on the head with this horror masterpiece. Do yourself a favour and watch this movie whenever you can. Just don't expect any warm, fuzzy feelings walking out of it.

Mid-life crises can always be the source of much hilarity and this mockumentary set in the glorious British countryside puts the fun in fundamental breakdown. 4 friends decide to embark on a coast-to-coast walk across Britain, hiking for hundreds of miles and stopping at some historic sites (mostly pubs where they get trashed most nights!). As the foursome get into mischief, squabbles, and some deep emotional revelations, the trip becomes far less about proving a point about middle-age, and more about discovering where they got lost and which path to take metaphorically speaking. Director James Rouse blends a quirky British comedy story with modern documentary style, and some classic sitcom-style lines to make a painfully funny and charming movie. Scenes of intimate, philosophical debate are mixed with lads banter and childish pranks. The group themselves make for some varied viewing. Beautifully shot and wonderfully scripted, Downhill is a great little movie.

Another animated winner from Disney in this tale of a female rabbit Judy Hopps who dreams of becoming a cop. Standing against all odds, she makes it through the police academy and wins a position as a cop in the city of Zootopia, where all animal types, predator and prey, get along well. When a case of fourteen missing otters comes up, Judi steps up and volunteers for the case and is given 48 hours to crack the case with the help of a con artist fox named Nick. I was utterly surprised by how much I enjoyed this movie. It took me by a surprise on many levels. While it succeeds on bringing decent family-friendly laughter and eye-popping state-of-the-art animation that shows how far we have come along with technology with recent years, one of the most surprising aspects comes from its political message about society and racism. The movie balances this so well with comedy that it appeals to both adults, children, and even teens alike. While kids may not pick up on its message and just shrug off depending on their age, they will nonetheless find joy and laughter at the uplifting story and humour. A fantastic Disney movie.

A twisted and funny British horror rom-com in which a young couple is tormented by the man's dead ex-girlfriend Nina every time they have sex. The wonderful thing about this kooky concept is that we have no distinct answers as to why Nina returns, but it never makes the viewer question it. Nina doesn't come back as a zombie that the couple have to deal with and try to hide from people. Nina comes back as something else, more of a ghost, and only comes back during sex to make life harder for the couple. Abigail Hardingham, Cian Barry and Fiona O'Shaughnessy make up the lead trio of actors and they do a great job in their roles. Overall it's a different kind of horror movie to the norm. The mix of gore, romance and comedy works well. I enjoyed it.

The sequel to the action movie Olympus Has Fallen. If you remember the first movie which had tons of explosions and action, it was like the Gerard Butler version of Die Hard. And while adrenaline junkies (like myself) enjoyed the thrilling stunts and explosions, I certainly didn't expect enough ground to make a sequel. London Has Fallen is about one thing: action. Within the first thirty minutes the excitement breaks out: flashing guns, big explosions, and extras flopping violently in the streets. From there, the violence only escalates, amplifying the action and intensity with each passing minute of the movie. The story isn't too bad - the American President comes to London for the state funeral of the British Prime Minister and all hell breaks loose on the streets of the capital. Gerard Butler is on top form as the President's bodyguard. This movie won't win any awards but it's exciting, flashy, and it has great special effects that keep you engaged in the storyline. The acting is decent as well from the cast. A very entertaining popcorn movie.

This is such a great movie. Ethan Hawke plays a a time travel agent that tries to prevent time travel related crimes. As with most all time travel movies, a paradox occurs and it is up to him to fix the paradox. He has to save lives from a bomb planted by the Fizzle Bomber that is set to go off and kill thousands of people causing problems for that time agency. Just when you think you know what is going to happen a new layer of the paradox is slowly revealed. But, the movie will lead you on and keep you on the edge of you seat, because, this story is like an onion. Just when one layer is peeled back, right around the corner several more layers of the paradox are waiting to be revealed. I really enjoyed this movie because of the way they edited it and let time unfold as the story is told. I think though it might take repeated viewings to understand everything. It's a movie that's so clever and intelligent. You won't be disappointed.

Based on a 1970's biographical drama of the same name by noted British playwright Alan Bennett, The Lady in the Van is a "mostly true story" as mentioned at the beginning of the movie. That's because Bennett had to put up with an old homeless woman for 15 years by allowing her to live in her van in his driveway. Then in 1999, Bennett cast Maggie Smith as the person in his own play. Ironically, Smith plays the same character on screen little over 15 years later. It is a breathtakingly stunning performance from Smith and a brilliant performance by Alex Jennings. The script is warm, insightful and witty, with the clever device of having two Alans - the writer who observes and the man who lives and interacts with the world outside. It's not the biggest comedy drama of 2015 and not even the funniest, but The Lady In The Van is bound to please just about anyone. And like the title character, it's a movie that's hard to love, but once you do, it's equally hard to resist. Brilliant.

This movie turned out to be a commercial failure but that's not to say it's a bad movie at all as it isn't. It's a fairly funny comedy. It's not great, but it ain't terrible either! The movie made me laugh, at parts. Especially in the first-hour, where I was enjoying the journey of its primary characters. The lead trio is well worth watching led by Vince Vaughan and particularly Tom Wilkinson's lively turn as the dirty old man and Dave Franco makes a sincere effort to enact the idiot. Though the first-hour has energy & humour, the second-hour is shabby and the climax isn't effective at all. The penultimate moments don't work and that definitely is a disadvantage for any movie. Overall it isn't all out hilarious, nor it is flat out bad. It has some moments, that do work. Give it a go

Training Day is engrossing, shocking, and powerful going three fourths of the way through. Denzel Washington is great as a corrupt cop in one of the best performances to date. Ethan Hawke is also good as one who's just getting to know this corruption. It's over produced but still believable, that is until the last 20 minutes or so. The ending has some effectiveness, but is implausible. The movie could have been great had the ending lived up to the rest of it. Still most of the movie is quite good.

This sequel to the 1991 cult movie Samurai Cop is so bad it's good and it's been made like that on purpose I think! Matt Hannon & Mark Frazer reprise their roles and kick ass as though their last exploits were only yesterday. The movie is the result of a dedicated crowd-funding campaign and the devotion of director Gregory Hatanaka. It's like an over-the-top 80's movie with a large dollop of humour. It's not to be taken seriously at all. Everything about it is absurd but if you take it in the right spirit you might enjoy it. Apart from the leads, I really liked Bai Ling's performance as the psycho woman Dogge Sakamoto. Overall, it's not too bad of an actioner despite the terrible script.

An Oscar winning performance by Julianne Moore as a 50 year old woman diagnosed with early onset of a rare form of Alzheimers disease. The viewer is shown from the stages early forgetfulness, to the diagnosis and then the family reaction, and finally coping with the worsening disease. There are some unexpectedly moving scenes because they are done without excess sentimentality: when Alice finds out her elder daughter has inherited the gene for the disease, when Alice gives a speech on the disease, when her younger daughter becomes the caregiver. There are some funny situations too that help lighten the mood during some deeply dramatic moments especially the bungled suicide attempt. Julianne Moore gives a all encompassing performance and she deserved the Oscar for this role. She portrays the pain, fear, joy and affection without making things too awful during the deterioration. It's a heartbreaking story to watch and one of a kind. Anybody struggling with the disease, or who knows someone who is, should watch this movie.
