Director Iain Softley should be given credit for piecing a fairly suspenseful movie about a young woman that takes over as a caregiver for a man that has been paralysed in the rural Spanish moss covered yesteryear of old Louisiana plantation life. What does she find there? Well, the mystery of the movie, most of which is exposed in the last 30 minutes, is explained just like that at the very end. This movie has much going for it. Softley uses every clichรฉ and stereotype imaginable of old Southern life and in particular Louisiana Southern life. But these are used effectively for the most part. We have voodoo/Hoodoo(?)elements, racial tensions, oppressive settings bogged down by decay and heat, and some thick accents. The acting is overall quite good. Gena Rowlands gives a standout performance. John Hurt plays her paralysed husband and even though he has so little to say, he is very effective in his role. Kate Hudson has the lead and is affable in it - and beautiful as well. That leaves Peter Sarsgaard as the last major player. He is adequate at best(and has a very heavy accent). But it's not the actors really that command attention, it's the director's sense of mood and style and a script that is very obvious in certain places yet surprisingly effective for the most part. The movie does drag for a bit in the middle and Softley throws some things in there really not needed. By and large; however, the movie is a success at scaring up a few chills and creating a unique ending that few will guess.

Sausage Party is an adult CGI animated comedy movie. I like most Disney Pixar animated movies and this movie is a fun and enjoyable parody of them. Even though the humour sometimes felt forced, the movie's message of self-discovery is what I believe holds it up. At "Shopwell's" supermarket, all the food on sale dream of one day being picked by customers to be taken to their new homes. However, some of them soon learn the terrible truth of what happens to them once they have been purchased by humans. A sausage named Frank (voiced by Seth Rogen) attempts to warn his fellow Shopwell's food items of their inevitable fate before it is too late.
Filled to the brim with crude jokes and political incorrectness, Sausage Party is an enjoyable send up of Disney Pixar movies. The animation was nice to look at and definitely on par with most of today's CGI animated features. The jokes didn't always work, but the ones that did had me laughing out loud. This movie is not for the easily offended and definitely not for children, but if you enjoy the comedy of Seth Rogen then I recommend seeing it.

I enjoy most movies by Werner Herzog but there's a couple of his early works which I do have a problem with. This movie was by far the most boring thing I have ever seen. It is massively pretentious, and so people who watch movies for "depth" and "art" may pretend to see something in it, but it is garbage. The sound and video quality are poor. The acting is purposefully drab (actually, the entire cast was supposedly under hypnosis, which really worked out beautifully, really.) If movies should a form of entertainment, then this is about as far as you can get from a good movie. If movies are supposed to be artful in some way, then maybe there's something to this that I'm missing, but it is so hard to watch that there is no message worth the chore of sitting through this thing. Extremely dull.

Made to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Heisei Rider series, this special crossover movie pits the Heisei Riders (1999 - present) up against the classic Showa Riders (1971 - 1994) which has been orchestrated by the evil Kamen Rider Fifteen of the Underground Empire Baldan. What's great about this movie is that all of the Riders since 1971 are featured and even some of the original actors come back to reprise their roles. Even the ToQgers Super Sentai team pop up to aid the heroes against the villains. The ending for the movie was chosen by fans who had to vote which generation they liked best. The fight scenes in this movie were pretty good. One thing that I liked in this movie is the way they upgraded the transformations to the returning Showa Rider actors. The story I thought was okay, but the characters and character development was pretty interesting. Another great KR crossover movie.

For those of you that have no idea about the world famous Studio Ghibli, I'll just say they're responsible for some of the best animation movies over the past 30 years such as My Neighbour Totoro and Sprited Away (if you've never seen these two, shame on you!). This is a wonderful and insightful documentary about famed animator Hayao Miyazaki's life and work at Studio Ghibli during the making of "The Wind Rises" which is his most personal movie to date and the last before he retired at the age of 72. It offers many personal views from the director, with plenty of photographs and archive footage, and also incredible shots of the strenuous process of making traditional hand-drawn animation. Needless to say, this is a must see for anybody who considers themselves a fan of Studio Ghibli. Unlike western-made documentaries, this takes the straightforward approach of simply grabbing a camera, following Miyazaki and his crew around, and asking the occasional question. The unobtrusive approach works well, somehow getting you into the heart and soul of the studio. A very enjoyable documentary although it may not appeal to everybody.

The Ice Age team appears to be out of ideas, at least that's how this new one feels. The plot is dreadfully contrived and over complicated for its target audience. In brief, there's an asteroid heading towards the Earth and it's up to the mammoth, the sloth, the ferret and the sabre tooth tigers to stop it. Even for a kids story, that's pretty ridiculous. Even the Scrat sequences have started to become pretty uninteresting. Having said all that, the old familiar faces are there and, whilst they might too be getting a tad tired, not all is lost. It still retains an air of charm inherited from the previous movies. The animation is still great but that's about it. They should have stopped with the last Ice Age movie.

Bad Moms is an awesome comedy. The movie is fun, raunchy, and entertaining. The premise is simple, yet realistic and relatable to women with kids. An overworked, over-stressed, and under appreciated mother has had enough and she decides to take a break from all her responsibilities in life. The cast is a blast to watch especially Kathryn Hahn as the foul and loud mouthed mother who steals every scene she's in. The chemistry between the main trio on screen is very visible in what they do. Like any movie, the plot has high-points and low-points emotionally wise. The cast does a very good job of adapting to the situation, to prevent it from being boring or drawn-out. Overall, this was a pretty solid comedy and it delivered on almost all fronts. I wasn't expecting a lot from this movie but it really surprised me. Go watch!

This is a very, very familiar story in Japan. It's a story from the 10th century, "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter". And, since it's a classic, there have been many movie versions of the story. For the most part, the story you see in the movie is the traditional tale. One day, a poor woodcutter slices into a stalk of bamboo and finds a beautiful thumb-size child. Since he and his wife are childless and have always wanted one, they are overjoyed with the discovery and raise the child who grows into adulthood quicker than a normal human. The animation for this movie is quite lovely with a nice look that appears as if it was made with coloured pencils and watercolours. The story however goes on for too long and I found my interest waning from time to time. Had they trimmed about 20 - 25 minutes, I think the movie would have worked better for me. Worth seeing for a very patient audience who is looking for something very different - otherwise a strange sort of picture that probably would offer little appeal to kids and folks wanting something light and Disney-like. Not the best Ghibli movie I've seen but good nevertheless.

Suicide Squad has to be the best DCEU movie so far. The characters were outstanding and it had a lighter tone than the previous movies which was desperately needed. Will Smith was superb in it but Margot Robbie and Jared Leto shine as Harley Quinn and The Joker. It's like no other movie in the DCEU or the MCU. I don't get why the critics rate the movie so low. The Joker is barely in the movie which was a little disappointing. I am eager to see more especially since in this movie he's just Harley's boyfriend. Which is understandable since the movie isn't really even about The Joker, it's about Deadshot and Harley Quinn. Batman makes nothing more than a few cameos and a scene after the mid-credits. The Enchantress as the villain wasn't the best but the characters more than made up for it. The soundtrack was phenomenal. It looks like DC is finally learning from past mistakes. Here's hoping that Wonder Woman and Justice League will also be just as spectacular as this movie.

Chris Rock is a very talented comedian. He is hilarious and quite insightful. However, his career in movies has been lukewarm so far. With Top Five, he rectifies that by delivering a smart, funny, and surprisingly dramatic movie. Chris Rock really delivers a Woody Allen style movie in his own way by mixing drama with comedy very well. It tackles celebrity, alcoholism, and the need to reinvent oneself with depth, but it never gets in the way of the comedy. Speaking of comedy, the movie delivers a lot of laughs with a few special gutbusters in there from some cameos. It moves at a good pace and the cast is great all around. Props to Rosario Dawson as she gave a good performance as she traded jabs with Rock and Gabrielle Union who brings some depth to a reality star character and makes her endearing. Overall, this is a return to form for Chris Rock in terms of comedy. Give it a shot.

Set in 1980s Texas, the story of Everybody Wants Some!! follows a college freshman who arrives three days before the start of classes and moves into a home that shelters members of the college baseball team. After getting acquainted with the rest of his teammates, he heads out with them for fun and, over the course of the next 3 days, gets a brief taste of the freedom & adventures that lie ahead of him in the freewheeling, unsupervised and experimental years of college life. Director Richard Linklater is a wonderful filmmaker who has a relaxed and natural way of presenting characters and events. The escapades roll on and keep the audience entertained and often in stitches. The actors are comical in an unforced way, and every scene is cleverly constructed. The net result is that you feel you've enjoyed the company of some startling lunatics having a good time. I bet that even with the rigours of film production that this gang of actors really did enjoy themselves. Clever wit and innovative physical scenes keep your mind hopping. A highly enjoyable comedy that you do not want to pass up.

Adam Sandler produces this random comedy and he isn't in it but all of his old friends are, and surprisingly this stoner laden movie is a comical success. The story of a lazy middle-aged video game tester who moves in with his grandma has little if any point and that is the beauty of it. All the random acts and completely engrossingly pop-culture themes make this one of the best comedies in recent memory. Allen Colvert takes the main part with all of Sandler's old time sidekicks taking the supporting roles. While the plot may be non-existent, it is the characters and absolute hilarity of it all which keeps the movie going and never leaving the viewer time to catch breath from laughing. This movie is a right blast and well worth checking out.

Mistress America is supposedly a quirky homage to screwball comedies from director Noah Baumbach. I think he should had taken advice from somebody as to how to make modern screwball comedies. It's about a young woman at college who starts to hang out with her soon to be stepsister. The main problem with this movie is it isn't funny enough. It feels too much like a stage play, they literally do stand around as if they were on stage. They even deliver lines like the audience were in the same auditorium. I wasn't a fan of Greta Gerwig in Frances Ha and I'm afraid my opinion of her hasn't changed in this movie either. Overall this movie weaved from being smart and sassy to being just dull and as such I cannot recommend it.

Around the same time as Gerry Anderson was making Space 1999, he also made this pilot movie for a new series he was developing. Unfortunately it wasn't picked up to be commissioned for a full series. The plot follows a family of 5 who are sent into the outer reaches of space in a spaceship that has a new propulsion drive but things go wrong when the drive malfunctions and they are sent deeper into space than they anticipate. The entire story is more or less set on the ship as they encounter various problems they have to solve. The story might sound like it's a British take on Lost In Space but it isn't. The acting is pretty good with Space 1999 regular Nick Tate as the ship's captain and a nice surprise to see Brian Blessed in a rather subdued role! An interesting pilot movie which will interest fans of Gerry Anderson more than casual sci-fi fans.
