On a beautiful island somewhere in Japan, the cycle of love, life and death takes place as shown through the eyes of 2 teenagers. One has a dying mother and the other has seen his parents splitting up. How they deal with these situations is what this movie is all about. This movie won't be to everybody's taste - it's a slow paced storyline and some shots by the director that linger on something such as waves crashing or trees blowing in the wind for a while. At 2 hours long, it does drag a little at times but overall I enjoyed the interesting storyline, great performances by the cast and the gorgeous cinematography.

Peter Sellers stars in this lively crime comedy caper about an Australian gang that is masquerading as policemen and stealing from other crime mobs. This movie was written by none other than Galton & Simpson (who were behind the excellent Steptoe & Son). Sellers is supported by a wonderful cast that includes John Le Mesurier, Bernard Cribbins and Lionel Jeffries. The humour on show here by and large comes courtesy of the unlikely alliance between London's policemen and the crime elements who both want to nail the Aussie gang. With a sharp witty script and a cast to die for, this Brit comedy is well worth seeking out.

This movie starts out a very different movie to the one it finishes as. It starts out trying to be overly stylish with slow-motion shots, flashbacks, over the top characters and music blaring over the top of scenes. All things you'd commonly see in Quentin Tarantino movies, the only difference is that he has the ability to pull them off. So the movie wasn't off to a great start! Thankfully it gives up on this after 30 mins and settles down to a fairly fun story about a nutcase in the desert who goes around hunting people with a sniper rifle and a gas mask. Ashley Bell as the beautiful heroine is great and so is Pat Healy as the killer. At 78 mins long, this movie zips along but unfortunately there just isn't time to develop the storyline. It could have done with another 15 mins or so. As another cat and mouse game movie it's OK. It's not exciting enough for my liking.

I was drawn to this low budget horror movie as it's set in my neck of the woods - Snowdonia. It's a tale about this nasty murderer known as The Wedlock Killer and a late night radio station where it seems that messages from the dead are coming through the airwaves. It isn't too bad of a movie, there's nothing I can say that really stands out at all. It's a case of seen it all before with some unoriginal jump scares and bloody killings. The cast are fine in their roles apart from Polish actress Joanna Ignaczewska who I thought was terrible. In the end, this is one of those movie that once you've seen it you'll completely forget about it. One to watch perhaps if you've got nothing better to see.

A great little known Brit indie comedy drama about 2 con artist sisters who assume the role of renowned poets The Wilding Sisters and join a poetry retreat somewhere in the Black Mountains of Wales. Once there they start to learn some important lessons in life.
I didn't know what to expect from this low budgeter but I was pleasantly surprised. The chemistry between the 2 sisters played by Dolly Wells and Alice Lowe is superb. They really bounce off each other and the supporting characters are great. I cannot fault any of their performances. The cinematography is also fantastic with some funny dialogue. It was quite a rewarding watch in the end and I'm glad I saw it.

This is an updated version of the classic 1981 movie Sailor Suit and Machine Gun. Although it is nowhere near as good as the original, it is still an entertaining story about a young schoolgirl who is trying to stay away from a life as a yakuza gang chief: a title that she inherited after her uncle was gunned down in front of her. Unfortunately other yakuza gangs and a corrupt politician that is trying to bulldoze an area for his own dirty needs conspire to make her reform her old yakuza gang to sort things out once and for all.
Pretty Kanna Hashimoto makes for a likeable lead as the young schoolgirl. Most of the storyline is character building with only the final 20 mins or so having some kind of bloody action with knifings and shootouts. The original had some kind of humour running through it but sadly whatever they've tried at being funny here fails to work. Nevertheless, I thought it wasn't too bad of an effort and I wan't bored watching it.

This is a solid well-acted made-for-TV drama that stars Peter Graves as a family man on an excavation excursion with his kids in the California mountains who survives a huge solar flare blast followed by an earthquake; slowly, the family comes to realise the astronomical proportions of what has happened when they get back to town and find desolate streets and dogs that have gone insane.
The drama is very effective and eerie. John Llewellyn Moxey's spare, no-frills direction lets the starkly plotted story unfold in a creepily gradual and unforced manner which makes for a genuinely unsettling viewing. It keeps you glued from start to finish with a storyline that doesn't go for sentimentality and has a somewhat downbeat ending. Considering the low budget for this movie, it doesn't rely on special effects but more on the family's survival instincts in the face that they could be the only people left alive. Definitely a rare movie that should be seeked out with a superior end of the world story.

This movie does for this generation what John Hughes' movies did for the '80s and what "She's All That" did for the '90s. This movie is so funny and Hailee Steinfeld nails those awkward teenage years spot on. It marks the feature directorial debut of writer/director Kelly Fremon Craig who superbly wrote this wonderful hilarious coming-of-age story that's candid and unadulterated. The movie gives you an honest look at what teenagers in the suburbs deal with these days. And much of it is thanks to Hailee Steinfeld's performance as Nadine that can't get any more real and authentic. And Steinfeld is surrounded by equally appealing talents like Kyra Sedgwick, Blake Jenner, Haley Lu Richardson, Hayden Szeto and Woody Harrelson as the sarcastic teacher who reluctantly helps Nadine figure herself out. All in all, this is a superb movie and you're guaranteed to have a good time watching it.

This movie focuses on a young boy, Conor, and his struggles to cope with his feelings in the face of his mother's terminal illness. Despite being on the surface to be a movie for children, this is emphatically not a kids movie. It is, in fact, a rather dark tale of emotional distress in the face of imminent death and the fantastic and frightening ways in which a young person responds to an appalling situation they can do nothing to avoid. Be prepared for some tears as this is an heartbreaking powerful drama. The acting from the main characters is uniformly superb but Lewis MacDougall as Conor is exceptional. The fantasy sequences are also brilliantly rendered. A must-see movie.

More than a decade after she last appeared on the big screen, Samara is back for another round to complete a trilogy of movies revolving around her. Don't know why they bothered as this movie isn't in the least bit scary. The story does give Samara's backstory but it does little to enhance the plot. There's nothing unique to make it stand out from your crappy generic teen horror movie and it is more or less devoid of any genuine frights and suspense. So a thumbs down from myself. I'd rather watch the Sadako vs Kayako movie that came out last year in Japan than this one. At least that was more interesting. Please no more Ring installment from Hollywood.
