Kung Fu Killer
A physically challenged man overcomes his uneven legs to become a super strong Kung fu master with the goal of killing seven of the greatest masters of their styles. Donnie Yen plays a prisoner released from jail to find him and stop his killing spree. This is a tribute to those old school HK martial arts movies with cameos from various stars of the past. The plot develops like something you'd expect from a kung-fu movie taking place centuries ago. The villain chooses his victims based on their mastery of the arts. He wants to defeat the best kicker, the best grappler, the best weapon user, etc. in order to prove he is the greatest fighter in the land. The action scenes are pretty good - fast and frenetic, minimal apparent CGI/wirework, and well choreographed. I should also note the producers do a nice job finding and designing creative set pieces for the action, with various scenes taking place on a busy freeway, inside a dinosaur museum, etc. Donnie Yen delivers his usual perfect set of fighting and action skills in this movie and fans of his work will not be disappointed.

SuckSeed: Huay Khan Thep
A thoroughly enjoyable Thai teen comedy. Teenage boys and best friends Ped and Koong decide to form a band. The problem is they suck. So they decide to recruit Ex - a drummer and Ern a female guitarist. Things go haywire when Koong starts to fall for Ern who is Ped's secret childhood crush. This movie was simply amazing. Everything about it is great and it really made me laugh out loud literally nearly every five minutes and the rest of the time, with a broad smile. Not only is it funny, but the story and acting are also executed perfectly. As the story gets more emotional near the end, it really shows us another side of the movie that really makes it great: the value of true friendship and love. Add to that some infectious rock tunes, and this is one high-spirited celebration of being the best you can be - even if you may suck! One of the best Thai movies I've seen.

The Case of Hana & Alice
A wonderful anime tale investigating a so-called murder of a school classmate who disappeared suddenly. It's different from the live-action 2004 movie but the 2 actresses (Yui Aoi and Anne Suzuki) who played the characters reprise their roles once more. The whimsical story follows Hana and Alice's friendship and actually develops their characters a bit better than before. There's plenty of humour to be had from Alice's interactions with various people but of course it's what takes place between the two girls that shines through. The animation is beautiful to look at with the detailed background of the sky a joy to see. Director Iwai Shunji has created a great story here and I loved how everything was wrapped up nicely in the end. If you loved the live-action movie you need to check this out.

Logan
Hugh Jackman's final performance allegedly as Wolverine and what a way to go out...in a blaze of glory! This movie exceeded all expectations especially when compared to the previous Wolverine movies which were fine but not brilliant. This movie ends the franchise on a high, with an emotional, and satisfying ending. Hugh Jackman's performance is the best of his career. This movie is jam packed with amazing action sequences which don't hold back one bit on the violence. The introduction of X-23 is a big win as well. She is played by Dafne Keen, and though doesn't say much, plays her role very well. Her connection with both Wolverine and Charles Xavier creates a family-orientated environment that makes the movie a whole lot better, especially seen in certain scenes. Overall, Logan is a fantastic movie that is as heartbreaking as it is visually stunning. It's a special movie with this that should be talked about for years to come.

Kong: Skull Island
The legendary King Kong returns in an all new adventure that gives the classic tale an update and new setting. The movie is set in 1973 when a man informs the government that they have detected a previously unknown island and need to investigate it before the Soviets learn of it and beat them to whatever the island my hold. A team is recruited to map the island. The movie combines a solid cast with state of the art special effects to take a new twist on the standard adventure fare. While many parts of the movie remain silly popcorn entertainment, the quality of the assembled cast allows the movie to move beyond being just an assembly of potential victims for a menagerie of CGI creatures to dispatch. While the story is more in line with the linear and thin plots of adventure movies of old, the sum of the parts does add up to an enjoyable experience for those who like the giant creature movies. It was certainly better than what I expected.

This movie tells the story of a young man who gets brutally attacked by two strangers. He then goes to college, joins a fraternity house, and gets transformed into a different person. There has been a lot of movies that portrays fraternity houses to be a lot of fun, but finally there is a movie that shows that fraternity houses may not be as rosy as it appear. The story focuses on the initiation week, where new recruits are humiliated and even tortured. It is uncomfortable to see what happens in the movie, even though the tone of the movie is not too dark. The level of subhuman behaviour is terrifying, because the abuse is legitimised by "tradition". This movie tells a compelling story of abuse, abused and abuser. It lets people reflect on what is right and what is wrong.

The Greasy Strangler

The Greasy Strangler
One of the most awful movies I've ever had the misfortune of watching! I can't even begin to describe how very weird it is. The acting is simply terrible. The choices made by the actors are conflicting and confusing. The story line is confusing and hastily thrown together with some stupid idiotic dialogue by the characters. What you do see a lot is an old man wandering around naked all greased up with his large penis (I believe it was prosthetic) being displayed many times. I've no idea what the point of all that was? This is a sorry excuse for a movie and no person should torture themselves by watching it.

Vincent Milรจs is a young but highly skilled shooting instructor for the French police. No family or friends (his father was killed by criminals and he was raised by his best friend; a very tough and obsessive cop). Miles is an outstanding shooter but he never wanted to be in the streets; but unexpected circumstances forces him to the real world of criminals and corruption. Forget everything you imagine. The movie is quite unpredictable and nothing is like it seem. Things gets extremely ugly and violent. This is not the typical political correct movie about police. Cops here are corrupt in different levels and far from friends. Events are barely explained and occur so fast you cannot blink or stop paying attention. In brief; the lesser to know about the movie is the better but it will keep you hooked up for a quick 85 minutes.

The Bad Education Movie
I've never gotten round to watching Bad Education the series but thought I'd give the movie a go instead. First impressions were not good as it was childish and purile. The lead character of Alfie Wickers played by Jack Whitehall, the teacher of Class K is like a child himself who wants to be one of the gang and the class itself is made up of your usual stereotypes. Gradually though I began to warm up to the movie. Sure, some of the jokes are in bad taste and it resorts to crude humour but it made me smile at times. The thin excuse for a plot has Class K going to Cornwall where they get involved in the activities of a Cornish extremist group. This comedy movie isn't too bad but I suspect fans of the series will enjoy it more.

Shield of Straw
After a 7 year old girl is murdered, the grandfather publicly issues a $10 million bounty on the head of the prime suspect (an already convicted rapist/murderer named Kiyomaru). An idealistic cop is assigned the protect and transport the suspect despite the repeated assassination attempts. Another great movie by Takashi Miike with an intriguing storyline. The idea of all of Japan having their eyes on one man was extremely interesting and gave major tension to the movie. You never knew who was going to try to claim that bounty and at what time. Kiyomaru is far from a sympathetic character, his behaviour, and complete lack of empathy, making him a narcissistic villain that causes even the audience to wonder whether protecting such a vile criminal is worth it. Although there are numerous set-pieces, it's the characters that drive this movie questioning their motivations. The cast are great but it's Tatsuya Fujiwara who stands out as the killer whose seeming lack of motive makes him all the more chilling. Overall this is a terrific and thought-provoking movie that will please Miike fans and those who appreciate great character-driven crime thrillers.

Tsure ga utsu ni narimashite.
A sad but heartwarming movie about a married couple who go through the ups and downs in life when the husband is diagnosed with depression and how the wife's strong support is instrumental in helping the husband in getting better and learn to live with his illness. The movie essentially focuses on the emotional plight of Mikio as he battles with his newfound state of seemingly perpetual unhappiness. It doesn't tell the root cause of his illness but points towards the fact that his stressful job has probably contributed to it. The acting by the 2 leads in Masato Sakai and Aoi Miyazaki is brilliant. The viewer can easily empathise with what Mikio is going through and see how his understanding and supportive wife Haruko changes her life to accommodate his illness. Both characters go on a journey together and by the end of the movie you'll have a warm fuzzy feeling in your heart. In the end, I thought it gave an honest portrayal of what depression can do to a person but also that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. A really good movie.

Who knew the story behind how McDonald's Restaurant became a worldwide phenomenon and franchise and the man behind it would be such a fascinating and engrossing movie? It's a biopic based on the life of Ray Kroc, and the businessman's ruthless acquisition of the McDonald's fast food franchise. Ray Kroc wasn't the best or smartest business man. He took advantage, as per the story, of the McDonald brothers; but that is just doing business. You will feel sorry for the brothers. The performances are the highlight of the movie. Michael Keaton steals the show as Ray Kroc. Keaton effortlessly portrays the various emotions of his crafty character. Director John Lee Hancock is brilliant in making the movie very involving and entertaining. Beautiful camera visuals, colour tone and production design add to this retro tone of the movie. For those that want to see the story about how the Golden Arches franchise rose from it's beginnings this is a must-see.

The Ninja Mission
A below average Swedish B-movie actioner about a scientist being tricked by the Russians into defecting and a group of ninjas being called up to rescue him. According to some sources, this movie has been Sweden's best movie export although I can't see how as it's pretty rubbish. The action sequences are poorly choreographed and the acting by the whole cast is dire. It's hilarious hearing a pistol being fired with the sound of a laser gun! The so-called ninjas resolve to utilising semi automatic weapons to take care of business so there's not much martial arts on display. This movie has gained cult status over the years. Overall it wasn't really worth watching so don't bother with it.

Hidden Figures
Now this is a movie that everyone needs to see. It relates the lives of three extraordinary black women who contributed to American culture and success during the Space Race in the 60's. The performances by Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monรกe and Kevin Costner were compelling. Taraji P. Henson was superb. The story line is remarkable and that it is based on a true story makes it so meaningful. What a movie to show kids that you can pursue your dreams no matter what your background is. A very inspiring tale indeed.

The story is simple and straight to the point, Driver wants revenge. Driver gets out of prison after 10 years, and he starts hunting down the criminals who were responsible for killing his brother. However, things get complicated when a hit man comes after him. Not only does he have to avoid the cops, but now he is also a target. Physically, the Rock is imposing but he only speaks about 2 dozen words in the whole movie. The Rock does not have much dialog, but his tough mannerisms and cold blooded killer facial expressions are enough. Billy Bob Thornton's performance as the sleazy cop is excellent. If you want to see an action packed revenge flick, this is a good one to see.
