Tiger and Crane Fists
Two schools each with their different methods must come together in order to defeat a seemingly unstoppable kung fu master. This movie is widely known to be the inspiration for the Kung Pow parody comedy. It's an old school classic despite the storyline having been rehashed so many times in other movies. The villain is a good one having iron claws as his weapon of choice and a pair of metal stars stuck to his body to make him invincible. The fight choreography is excellent. The movie may look cheap and despite it being Taiwanese and not from Hong Kong it's still worth checking out.

Silver Spoon
Based on the manga and anime series, this live action adaptation follows Yuugo Hachiken, a teenage boy from Tokyo who doesn't know what he wants to do in the future. He enrols at an agricultural school in the country in order to get away from his parents especially his father who considers him a failure. His prestigious middle school upbringing doesn't help in him making friends at his new school where he's a complete fish out of water as all the other students live on farms. Slowly but surely he begins to grow as a person in his new surroundings. This was an interesting coming of age movie watching a teenager grow in confidence from his shaky start where he makes mistakes and doesn't have any friends to slowly integrating and immersing himself in farming life at a school. It's different from other movies that are around and as such it was quite refreshing for me to see. Everything from early morning jobs at the farm, rearing animals so they can be slaughtered and the pitfalls of farming is shown. The characters are likeable enough and it's great that there's no conflicts as such with any of them. Everybody pretty much gets on with one another. I thought this was an enjoyable movie which shows we each have the ability to set our own path and believe what we want to believe.

Crayon Shin-chan: The Secret Treasure of Buri Buri Kingdom
The 2nd Shin-chan movie finds the rude young lad winning a holiday for his family in the kingdom of Buri Buri but it's a trap from some villains who want to capture him and his doppelganger, the young Prince of Buri Buri as they plan to steal a hidden treasure in the kingdom. I'm still surprised that Crayon Shin-chan is geared towards kids considering the sexual innuendo in this movie. Makes me wonder what kind of effect this has on the young impressionable minds of Japan! You only have to see several scenes in this movie in which Shin-chan is waving his penis around or pulling his shorts down to show his arse. This movie is very funny though and anybody with a good sense of humour is going to laugh at Shin-chan's antics. I had a great time watching this movie and I'm sure you will too if you're not offended by what Shin-chan gets up to at times!

Into the Forest
A very well made post-apocalyptic drama revolving around 2 sisters who have to survive on their own in a house in an isolated forest after an unknown incident cuts the electricity off in the US. How would we be able to cope without modern technology: no mobile phones, TV etc. This movie tells us the story of building up a new life without these conveniences. It's rather unsettling as it is theoretically possible for something like that to happen. This movie has some really convincing performances. Ellen Page is great, the depth of her emotions are intense and believable. Evan Rachel Wood is also really good, she does her sensitive character a lot of justice and portrays a vividly brutal scene with real honesty. The forest setting is lush and beautiful. The direction by Patricia Rozema was good and the pace was tense and believable. The movie does fall apart somewhat during the final 30 mins but overall I really liked it. Give it a try.

A Street Cat Named Bob
A wonderful and touching feel-good true life story about a recovering heroin addict who with the help of a street cat that comes into his home is able to turn his life completely around. There is much to like about this movie from the performance of Luke Treadaway who is brilliant as James Bowen and his supporting co-stars. The star of the show however belongs to the ginger tomcat Bob who steals every scene he's in. He's adorable and that's coming from myself who isn't that much of a cat lover! Even though the story deals with a serious issue in drug abuse, there is a light side to proceedings to balance everything out so it's not all dark in the movie. This is a worthwhile movie to check out with a heart warming end to it.

I didn't think I was going to like this movie if I'm being perfectly honest but you know what - it's charm completely won me over. It's a triumph on so many levels. It hooks you from the beginning with its big opening number on the highway and has your heart fluttering in the club at the end. The chemistry between the two leads in Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone helps make the movie so great. Stone has slowly shown herself as a force to be reckon with in Hollywood and now Gosling has join the ranks after his stellar performance as the jazz pianist who's main dream is watch jazz live on. Stone is a wanna be actress who can't find her way. Together, they thrive off each other's love and support as they try to accomplish their goals together. It wouldn't surprise me to see both of them nabbing an Oscar for their performance here. What else helps is a beautiful score and extremely well written songs. You may have heard that this movie is like a love letter to those old musicals from the days of Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire and they'd be right. All in all, this movie really took me by surprise. I'm not a huge fan of musicals but this one was superb. You'd be mad to miss out on it.

This anime movie is about a tragic event that takes place in a small town. A humanoid robot is asked to replace somebody that was killed in a plane crash in order for that person's lover to cope and move on in a new technique called Robot Therapy. This is a great movie about love and loss with a twist I didn't see coming right near the climax. The viewer gets to learn a little about Hal's background from his childhood as a thief to his courtship with the beautiful Kurumi. The animation is excellent with a lot of vibrant colours used. Even though the movie has a rather sad storyline, it isn't one that gets you emotional at all although it does have one or two touching moments. Overall it was an interesting anime to watch and gives an insight into a possible future in which robots might perhaps help us get over grieve.

Having enjoyed the 50's version of Orwell's book about a bleak world from which there is no escape for people from the tyranny of a few as they seek to control the masses through a steady dose of patriotic wars, constant misinformation and by changing the history itself, I wanted to check out the 80's version as well. IMO it is just as good as the 50's version and probably captures the spirit of the novel even better. The cast is incredible with the wonderful Richard Burton in his last movie role as O'Brien who is a truly frightening and fascinating, suitably enigmatic and brilliant villain. His chemistry with John Hurt as Winston Smith is superb especially in the torture scenes. Hurt is flawless in his role and it's one of his best performances. This isn't one of those movies in which you'll find a happy ending. It's bleak and depressing but that's what makes it such a compelling movie. The notion that Big Brother is watching you has certainly come true in this day and age. Well worth taking a look.

Midnight Special
Midnight Special is a modern day science fiction movie with a very old school feel running through its veins. It's about an eight-year-old boy who possesses otherworldly powers on the run with his father from the Feds and a religious cult. I enjoyed the mystery surrounding the boy's powers and how in the end some of the answer is revealed (not all though) in a captivating way. The story, written by Jeff Nichols, is a very good one and at the heart of that story is a rather beautiful relationship between a father and son. It adds another layer to the movie rather than it just being a standard story about people on the run. Excellent performances from the cast. I'm still not quite sure why they decided to name this movie Midnight Special but it was great to watch.

Bayonetta: Bloody Fate
Based on a 2009 video game, this anime movie follows Bayonetta, an Umbra witch that was born out of a tryst between her mother a witch and a Lumen Sage which was forbidden. Now as a grown up adult, Bayonetta embarks on a journey to rediscover her identity and her past as she has reawakened after a slumber of 500 years. From the onset of the movie, the viewer is thrust into a bloody fight between the sexy and sharp witted heroine Bayonetta and Angels (which look like those out of Evangelion). Bayonetta herself provides plenty of bad assery and fanservice. I like the character because of her cocksure attitude and a playful sense of humour. The storyline is a bit of a mixed bag as it doesn't explain some things which may confuse some viewers but if it's all action and violence with copious amounts of blood you're after then you get it in spades in this movie. The animation is lovely to look at with amazing use of colour. I have no idea if this ties in well with the game but it's a fun and exciting movie that should satisfy anime fans.

Adventures of Zatoichi
The 9th Zatoichi movie finds the blind swordsman minding his own business and wanting to enjoy a peaceful New Year's holiday at an inn but trouble starts brewing and soon Zatoichi is up to his neck in the dastardly deeds of a corrupt law official. If you've seen the other 8 entries before this one, you're not getting anything different here. This story builds drama with interesting characters and a big cast, and it pulls you in, but I was expecting a much better ending. There's no payoff at the end despite Zatoichi seeing the New Year sunrise as there are just too many unresolved emotions and loose ends. Despite this, this movie and indeed all of the old Zatoichi ones definitely need to be checked out.

I've always been a fan of Japanese tokusatsu shows with the incredibly straightforward heroes, the extravagant costumes and villains, the incredibly ridiculous plots and even the repetition of said plots. And with such a popular genre, there will be lots of spoofs and parodies about it and this is where we enter Jossy’s, a tokusatsu parody that knocks all the tropes and cliches of the genre, particularly ones involving Super Sentai. It involves 5 young beautiful women of different characteristics and personalities being assembled against their will by male leader Charles who only appears as a hologram projection. These women must save the world from Phantoms who threaten to destroy it but unfortunately they have a bad habit of turning up when the girls are busy with their ordinary lives and jobs!! The team is called Jossy's (a crap name indeed!) but the reason for that is Charles thinks there are far too many teams called Rangers! It might be no surprise to hear that this movie comes from the mind of Yuichi Fukuda who has also directed the Hentai Kamen movies. It's a fun movie that follows the same trend as proper tokusatsu shows i.e monster fights that take place in the same quarry every week! It's surprisingly good just how much they imitate the Super Sentai shows (individual members fare poorly against the villains until all 5 come together to form their team tornado). The 5 stunning actresses are excellent in their parts and each have their funny moments. It's obvious that this movie has been done by somebody that loves the genre. Everything clicks together to make a wonderful comedy. If you're a fan of the tokusatsu genre, you could do no wrong that taking a look at this affectionate parody.

Kogitsune Heren

Kogitsune Heren
A young boy who is left behind by his mother who in pursuit of her own ambition as a freelance photographer, encounters a little fox after school one day. The two seem to have an interesting chemistry, forged because they are seen as "abandoned" by those who should be rightfully taking care of them. This is one of those heartwarming family animal movies with a message attached to it. Yes, it may be predictable and some might see it as a bit "too sweet" but you can't help but not like the storyline of a boy's love for an animal that's deaf and blind which would otherwise have died sooner had it not been for his care. He becomes a surrogate mother to the fox cub. The pacing of the movie is relatively slow, perhaps deliberately too, but the ending just dragged, unfortunately because you know what's coming a mile off. The acting by the cast is good especially by the young boy. All in all - a movie that the whole family will enjoy despite it being too sentimental at times.

100 Bloody Acres
Co-writer/directors Cameron and Colin Cairnes, in their movie debut, successfully deliver all the essential elements needed to both make you laugh and squirm. A story of two unscrupulous brothers and their quest to be the unrivaled top dogs of the local fertiliser industry, a status that they will stop at nothing to achieve because they put dead bodies into their mix. While the plot consists of conventional and somewhat clichéd ideas it uses those elements to their maximum potential. With fine acting from the entire cast, skillful gore effects and proper production values, the movie manages some serious laugh out loud moments while also delivering a few bona fide quirky uncomfortable scenes of horror, all of which are delivered in fun, as it stayed mainly on the black comedy track. If you don't mind gore and have the urge for a hilarious Aussie dark comedy then this is a good movie to check out.

The Dungeonmaster
This movie had a good idea as a storyline: a techno nerd who has a talking computer which helps him out via a wrist-pad is whisked away into another dimension by a wizard of some sorts called Mystema who has captured his girlfriend. He has to tackle 7 challenges before he can rescue his girl. Apparently this movie is based on the once-popular Dungeons & Dragons game although you wouldn't realise from watching it. Unfortunately what looks good on paper doesn't come out that well on the screen thanks to the awful script and crappy special effects. Then again this is normal for a Charles Band production! The only challenge I liked was the rip-off from Jason & The Argonauts in which a stone statue comes to life and the hero has to destroy him. The whole movie is a bit of a mess if I'm being honest. I'm sure in the hands of a better company and decent producer this movie would have been OK I'm sure. A waste of potential.
