Black Sea
This movie sees a former navy sub captain take on a journey to recover some lost Nazi gold for a private backer. The best part of this movie is definitely the performance from Jude Law. Even though his accent is a little weird I thought his character was really interesting. He had a good arc in the movie and you believed his character. There are one or two interesting supporting characters but the majority weren't important though or likable. The script has some good tension and dramatic dialogue but it lacked a bit of character development and humour which would have helped. The style of the submarine was great and really felt claustrophobic. A decent enough movie in the end.

A Passage to India

A Passage to India
David Lean proves again that he is the master of epic cinema by telling an intimate story against a backdrop of a richly observed India. The location photography is a jewel, the costumes and settings perfectly suited to the E.M. Forster story which is set in the 1920s and focuses on two women, Adela Quested and Mrs. Moore who travels from England to India to visit Ronny Heaslop, Moore's son and Adela's fiancรฉ. The movie is extremely well acted, with everyone involved on top form. For me Judy Davis and James Fox were two who really stood out to me. The scenery is well shot and you really do see the character of the country and see the hustle and bustle of the Indian way of life. Overall, this is a wonderful movie and typical of the brilliance of David Lean.

Two Days, One Night
Sandra Bya is married with two children. She's been on sick leave for depression. Her co-workers vote to get her fired rather than not collect their bonuses. Her friend convinces their boss Dumont to make another vote, this time a secret vote. They're convinced that their supervisor Jean-Marc is pressuring them to vote her out. She is reluctant to beg for her job. She has two days and one night to meet her co-workers one on one, and convince them to help. Marion Cotillard is brilliant as Sandra and the concept is so simple. It's fascinating to see the spectrum of reactions to her pleas. The wide array of personalities is intriguingly human. Cotillard plays down her depressed character and shows some real depths. This is a small simple story that is done very well. Pleasantly surprised by this movie.

The Bargee
A comedy movie revolving around a dying industry in the UK during the early 60's - that of transporting goods via canal barge. Harry H Corbett plays Hemel Pike, a charmer of the canals who has a girl at every stop. It's no coincidence that the writers behind this movie Galton & Simpson also wrote the sitcom Steptoe & Son that Corbett was starring at this time. The plot is about one of Corbett's women who falls pregnant and the fiery father played by Hugh Griffith who is determined to find out who did the deed. There are a number of British comedy greats in this movie such as Ronnie Barker as Corbett's dim witted cousin, Eric Sykes and Derek Nimmo in a cameo role. It's a fantastic nostalgic piece about a way of life that was soon gone. A nice and pleasant enough comedy showing the lovely locations around the Grand Union Canal. Perfect for a rainy afternoon watch.

Experience Preferred...But Not Essential

Experience Preferred...But Not Essential
A great coming of age drama about a shy girl coming to work as a waitress at a seaside hotel in North Wales during the early 60's. Although the story is set in Wales, it was actually filmed on the Isle of Man and on the grounds of the now demolished Grand Hotel in Ramsey. Elizabeth Edmonds plays the leading role of the introverted and awkward teen Annie who gets to go on a journey of self discovery. There's a wonderful cast of characters including a loudmouth waitress, a bartender who goes sleepwalking in the nude and a Scottish chef. Over the year that Annie works at the hotel, she changes into a completely different girl that started the job. I didn't know what to expect from this but I really enjoyed it and it's a movie worth seeking out.

Grand Slam
Hilarious movie which follows a group of Welsh rugby supporters as they travel to Paris to watch the final match in the 5 Nations Championship in which Wales could win the Grand Slam. This is a brilliant comedy that will appeal to people regardless if they're not Welsh or a rugby fan. The antics of the motley group in the movie bring many laughs especially in the Paris strip club. Oscar winning actor Hugh Griffith leads the awesome cast which includes Windsor Davies and Dewi 'Pws' Morris. Despite it's short running time it packs a lot in - comedy, violence, sex, sport and camaraderie. It would have been nice had there been a sequel with the same cast of characters but it never happened. It might look dated now but who cares. It's a delightful fun-filled movie.

Zhong ji sha shou
This is a decent Taiwanese actioner in which two hired killers go against their organisation in order to save a woman they've been asked to eliminate. Although this kind of movie with it's plot has been done to death, it's still worthy of seeing just for the exciting action scenes on display. At just 75 mins long, the movie zips through and although there is some ridiculous melodrama thrown in, there is plenty of martial arts / gunplay to satisfy most Asian movie action fans.

The 13th Floor

The 13th Floor
On the 13th floor of an office building, a young boy is murdered. His uneasy soul now inhabits the electricity system of that floor. The abandoned floor is now home for some runaway young adults. One of them just happened to see the murder of the boy when she was a little girl, because she's the daughter of the murderer. She plans to give out the information of her corrupt father, but he plans to get that information back. At any cost. This ia a horror thriller from Australia. The main problem is nothing much happens until the last 20 mins. The supernatural element of the storyline is played down which is a shame as it would have made this movie far more interesting. The ghostly boy only appears now and then. Things pick up near the climax but by then you might either still be watching or have switched off. This could have been a great ghostly revenge movie but unfortunately it's only average at best. A wasted opportunity.

Schoolgirl Complex
A complete borefest set in a Japanese all girls school where the arrival of a new student to the broadcasting club stirs up feelings amongst some girls for their fellow classmates. If you're expecting this to be full of lesbian action then you've come to the wrong movie. This is a movie that explores taboos in a sensitive manner but done in a rather dull way. The acting is good by the cast but the storyline revolving around an arts festival is just so boring it's enough to make you go to sleep.

The Avenging Quartet
4 of the baddest female martial arts actresses from Hong Kong star in this so and so actioner. Moon Lee, Yukari Oshima, Cynthia Khan and Michiko Nishiwaki come together just for this movie although the majority of this movie is dominated by Moon and Cynthia whilst the other two only have bit part roles but when they come together sparks fly and the hand to hand fighting between them is fantastic. The story isn't the best and is plodding at times but when it switches to the action scenes then the movie comes alive. Not one of the best in the Guns n Girls genre but you've got to see it just for the ladies.

Our Little Sister

8/10

Our Little Sister
This is a beautiful slow moving story about 3 sisters finding out that they have a young half sister after their father dies. The eldest sister invites her new found sister to live with them in Kamakura. There is no plot as such in this movie - it's a slice of life drama as the sisters get to know more about their new sibling and their father who left them and their mother to go with a new woman. It's got fantastic performances, beautiful directing, brilliant dialogue and an emotionally impressive, but never melodramatic story. The cinematography around the seaside town of Kamakura is stunning. Overall, Our Little Sister is a wonderful movie, and it uses understated drama in a brilliantly realistic and immersive way, helped further by great performances and fantastic directing by Hirokazu Koreeda.
