Kikaider REBOOT
This is a reboot movie of the tokusatsu show Kikaider that was shown during the early 70's in Japan. Those expecting to see a camp movie along the likes of Ultraman featuring monsters threatening Japan will be surprised to see that there's nothing of the kind here and this movie is rather serious with a dark storyline. The original Kikaider series also had some comedic relief for the kids - not so in this reboot. The new and modern take on Kikaider might upset pure fans but I rather enjoyed this movie. The storyline is fast and exciting and is all about what makes Kikaider a little bit human (a conscience circuit inside his metal body) than his deadly android opponent who exploits this to the full. Tokusatsu fans should like this movie. It's far superior to other recent campy movies in the genre.

Flying Colors (2015)
A wonderful feel-good Japanese movie about how one person can inspire you to reach for your dreams and in this case it's a cram school teacher who helps a young blonde girl with no future to realise her true potential. True, it's not groundbreaking by any means. But is it interesting? Is it emotionally gripping? And most importantly, is it memorable? This is all three, and more. Taking literally the best parts of what characterizes Japanese movies - over the top acting, narrative exposition, classic tugs at the heart-strings moments and melodramatic long pauses - this movie pulls great screen writing, direction and acting to produce what has to be the best two hours to come out of mainstream Japanese cinema in a very long time. I loved this movie and so will you!

Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie
If you were a fan of the TV show, you will love the movie - it's quite a crowd pleaser for the fans. It has all the right nods to the series, so non-fans may miss out on quite a few inside jokes. You don't get much introduction to the characters, so having seen all of the series means that this isn't an issue, but I imagine that it may not be so great if you don't know the characters already and you won't get as much out of it. Also, it's very nice to see familiar faces from (most of) the old gang. It has quite a few cameos which are fun regardless, and some big laughs. The girls are as funny as ever, and the movie gleefully caters for you. If you haven't seen the series, you should watch it, and then watch the movie.

The Admiral: Roaring Currents
This excellent movie revolves around the Battle of Myeongnyang around 1597 which took place during the Imjin War when Japan tried to invade the Korean peninsula and even parts of Ming Dynasty China. After a disastrous defeat, the Korean fleet only consisted of 13 warships while the Japanese gathered 133 warships and around 200 logistical support ships. The Japanese fleet was headed for the Korean capital Hanyang to support their land's army but general Yi Sun-shin decided to battle the superior enemy in a strait. By using the dangerous currents in the strait and a tactically well chosen emplacement for his fleet, the admiral was able to destroy several Japanese warships and to push back the enemy. The unexpected defeat shocked the Japanese and encouraged the Koreans. Joseon Dynasty's navy was able to regroup with Ming Dynasty's army and the Japanese were expelled out of the Korean peninsula the next year. The movie shows us the weeks before the famous battle, an extensive depiction of the battle itself and its immediate aftermath and a short look beyond in the concluding minutes. The naval battle is detailed, diversified, emotional, entertaining, epic and intense. It's probably the best naval battle in the history of cinema. This isn't the best Korean movie of all times by any means and maybe its slightly over-hyped but fans of epic war movies will get what they desire.

Clownhouse
I am a huge fan of horror of all kinds, this movie is poorly acted, filmed, written, and executed. The clowns just look like fat stupid stunt men wearing clown costumes and are not scary at one point in the whole entire movie. A story that has men escaping a mental asylum and wearing clown outfits, not original at all, not even a twist ending. It's just a plain boring cat and mouse chase movie with no blood violence or charisma. This movie is more famous for it's director Victor Salva and what he did with one of the young leads and this got him into trouble with the law. This is a really poor so-called horror movie and thankfully it ends after a short 80 mins.

The Handmaiden

The Handmaiden
Another brilliant movie by Korean director Park Chan-wook. The movie, which is an adaptation of the novel The Fingersmith, revolves around a woman who is hired as a handmaiden to a Japanese heiress. This is the very basic summary to a movie that has a lot of depth underneath the surface and requires the audience's attention throughout. And as the plot goes on we discover the newly hired handmaiden may have some ulterior motives along with many of the other characters. Nothing is revealed too quickly and the movie is split into a three-part structure that slowly pieces things together through flashbacks. The performances from the cast is perfect in sucking you into this world of erotica, selfishness, and trickery. Both female leads are fantastic. The cinematography is some of the most breathtaking of the year. Whenever Park Chan-wook makes a movie, it must undoubtedly be compared to his masterpiece, "Oldboy". I don't think that "The Handmaiden" surpasses it, but it comes very close. With this movie, he proved himself to be one of the greatest working directors today.

Oasis: Supersonic
This awesome documentary charts the early years of what was once the biggest band in the world during the 90's - Oasis. Using never before seen and backstage footage plus newsreels it shows how the band went in less than 3 years from signing to Creation Records in Glasgow to headlining Knebworth 1996 in front of 250,000 fans. What makes this documentary so special is it goes right into the heart of the band and you feel like you know the 2 scallywag brothers Liam & Noel a little bit better at the end of it. More than anything it took me back to those glory years of the 90's when the band was on top of the world and those first 2 albums of Oasis (Definitely Maybe and Morning Glory) is chock full of legendary songs which will stand the test of time. This is a must-see for Oasis fans - a chance to relive what made them one of the greatest rock bands of all time.

Night of the Demons 2
I enjoyed the first Night of the Demons movie and this sequel is almost as good as it thanks to the blend of horror and comedy. It never takes itself too seriously but on saying that there's some really good gory deaths on show. The characters are your standard teenage sex starved bunch. The exception being the nun Sister Gloria who's into martial arts. Director Brian Trenchard-Smith has crafted a movie that's a lot of fun to watch. If you like tongue-in-cheek horror with the occasional moment of story brilliance and a nun who wouldn't look out of place wielding an Uzi, then sit down and watch this.

The Boy and the Beast
The Boy and The Beast is another wonderful anime movie by Mamoru Hosada who also made Summer Wars and The Wolf Children. The plot revolves around a beast who is on his way to becoming the grandmaster in another dimension linked to our own world called The Animal Heaven. He needs to beat one opponent to be crowned, but in order to do that he must also take in a protรฉgรฉ. This leads him to finding an orphan who has recently run away from home and is looking for a place to stay. The relationship between these two becomes pretty standard but you can't help but love the way the two act around each other. The story develops really well, with great pace and giving time for the characters to grow. The animation is amazing and very well done with simplistic style but in a great way. At the end I was so glad that I just invested 2 hours of my time in this anime. Great movie, great story telling, great animation, what else you need?

Fight for Your Life

Fight for Your Life
It's easy to pass Fight for Your Life off as 'Last House on the Left' inspired racist garbage, but this movie approaches it's subject matter in an assured and straight-up manner, and while it often gets uncomfortable to watch; it's hard to deny that the movie provokes a reaction in the viewer - and that is the most important thing about a movie like this. It definitely takes influence from Wes Craven's pioneering shocker, as well as the rest of the 'rape and revenge' genre, but by adding racist themes into the mix. The plot follows 3 inmates that escape from prison. While on the run from the cops, they decide to hole up in a house in the woods, inhabited by a family of black people. These convicts aren't very nice anyway, but their leader also happens to be an astute racist; and so decides to take out his frustrations on the captive family in the most brutal and humiliating ways possible. The movie benefits from some surprisingly good production values, and a host of well worked and convincing performances. Most of the characters are a little OTT, but it's easy to believe them and the situation that the movie presents. There isn't quite as much brutality in this movie as there has been in many similar ones made before or after this one, but the way that the director puts the focus on the things that the characters say increases the tension ten-fold. Overall, this won't be everyone's cup of tea; but I found it to be an excellent slice of exploitation and comes recommended to all the right people.

The Horror Show
Originally this wasn't anything to do with the 'House' horror franchise so I've read. It seems the same crew made this movie but it was an independent horror flick, I'm not really sure why they gave it the title 'House III', confusing and odd state of affairs. Anyway this movie doesn't revolve around a haunted house but mainly a serial killer who comes back from the dead after being executed in the electric chair. This is a straight horror thriller. Its not terrifying or particularly original as it came out in the same year as Wes Craven's Shocker (same plot). The movie is totally saved by Brion James as the killer Jenke and Lance Henriksen as the cop, if it wasn't for these actors the movie would be pants. James hams it up hugely but does come across as menacing despite his annoying laugh, while Henriksen's lean greyhound like physic and face always seems to fit any role. This feels like a TV movie of sorts for some reason, doesn't have that true film like quality if that makes any sense. Worth a watch if you've got nothing else to see.

The Invisible Man vs The Human Fly
This is a rare Japanese movie about a series of mysterious stabbing deaths that take place in post war Tokyo. The only thing linking them all is a buzzing sound. A cop investigating the deaths makes himself invisible using a ray gun that's being developed. It sets up a clash between a man that can shrink himself in size and the invisible cop. This is a great movie played straight despite the ridiculous storyline. It has good acting, audio and video quality. Even the fake cosmic ray lab is realistic. But it is all lost when you see the tiny shrunken man flying around in his business suit, without wings making buzzing sounds. It is so completely unbelievable that it's hilarious. Those that want to see a rare Japanese movie go and check it out.

Mandroid
A lame movie in which two scientists build a android that they can control with a helmet and hand controls because they are working on super toxic mushrooms and need this Mandroid to handle the mushrooms. One scientist is trying to save the world and the other wants to make Mandroid into military units. A lot of talking and only a couple of sets to film on, it gets pretty boring until the end where you are rewarded with some decent action. It's a fairly laughable B-grade effort in the end and not really worth bothering with.
