The Huntsman: Winter
As the title suggests, the movie follows Chris Hemsworth's Huntsman, and plays as both prequel and sequel to the first movie. We get a bit of backstory to his character, including the love and death of his wife, intimately linked in with the story of the Ice Queen, sister to the Evil Queen Ravenna, who's slighted by her lover and retreats to the north to forge her own kingdom. Jump to after the events of Snow White and the Huntsman, and the Mirror has gone missing. The Huntsman is recruited to find it, but it's disappearance also sparks the interest of Freya, the Ice Queen. The plot is very straight forward but it felt dragged out at times. There are 4 dwarf characters that have obviously been put in just for comic relief and whilst the banter between them is funny at times, it just gets annoying by the end. The climax comes too quickly in my opinion, it would have been better to linger more on the consequences of the second turning point. It feels rushed and doesn't explore the feelings of our characters very much, going rather straight to the action. The acting by the cast is rather good. Overall, it's an enjoyable, decent fantasy flick, but nothing special.

Eddie the Eagle
This is a story that is long overdue in coming to the screen. It is the tale of one small boy's dream to be an Olympian.....any kind of Olympian, and a man's tale of how he got there. I remember the ridicule he faced in the 80s as he strived towards his dream, but he went down in history as he competed in the Calgary Winter Olympics and carved himself a niche in the nation's hearts. Eddie is played by Taron Egerton and the likeness achieved by the actor is uncanny. Even though I knew the outcome I spent the whole movie urging him to succeed in every discipline he undertook as he pursued his Olympic Dream. There are huge highs and lows in this movie, support from obvious sources and opposition from unexpected ones, and lots of humour. Interestingly Hugh Jackman, who plays Eddie's reluctant coach, is not the biggest star in this film as Taron Egerton shines through as the brightest light in a hugely entertaining, feel-good and heartwarming movie. Brilliant

Captain America: Civil War
This movie is a sequel to Age of Ultron and equally a sequel to the Winter Soldier, yet each previous MCU installment is touched upon in this movie. The building blocks previously set up in previous movies helps for the politics of the movie to be relatable, interesting and entertaining, an aspect which is often done so poorly in other movies. This allows for a patient yet gripping movie from the onset and doesn't rely on constant action and fight scenes. The reasons each hero chooses a particular side is justified and understandable. Iron Man's decision to stand against Captain America is also justified and paints the character in a new light in my opinion. You genuinely feel for both characters. The action is brilliant and is arguably the best of any superhero movie. The movie has some genuinely upsetting and emotional moments yet manages to then flip it to moments of laughter and humour. The timing is sublime. Overall Civil War is a mature movie that raises the bar for the genre. It leaves the MCU in such an interesting and exciting position. I can't wait to see more. Definitely go and see.

Where to Invade Next
I'm not going to hide the fact that I'm extremely biased when it comes to Michael Moore. I love all his documentaries, and his liberal views closely align with mine, so I just want to say Where To Invade Next is amazing and Moore's most positively infectious movie. For the documentary, he covers a wide range of issues that is plaguing the US, including paid time off for work (or lack thereof), school lunches, women's rights, abortion, not being able to acknowledge our dark history by sugarcoating things in classes, college debt and rising tuition, the education system as a whole, the prison system, the incarceration of black men, the death penalty, the war on drugs, among others I'm sure I missed. And if it seems that Moore is ripping on America, he isn't. Despite taking the US to task, Moore believes we have the power to change things if we care enough to (like the countries he visits in the movie), and that's the positive takeaway of Where to Invade Next. Overall, I think it's an important documentary, and if any of these issues relate to you (which of course they do), I urge you to go seek it out.

Absolutely Anything
A group of aliens decide to put the fate of the world in the hands of one random guy by giving him the power to make anything happen as a test towards predicting the values of humanity. British writer/director Terry Jones, known for his work with Monty Python, returns with his first feature movie in 19 years for Absolutely Anything. It's quite funny from a hilarious talking dog to a series of unpredictable gags ranging from walking turds to the accidental annihilation of an entire classroom of kids, the movie's unpredictable humour is completely nuts. But like a fine mix of chocolate-covered nuts, Jones makes sure none of the jokes ever become mean-spirited, ensuring the movie maintains some refined substance through its mostly lighthearted antics. Just don't expect the same style of humour seen in his '70s comedic masterpiece Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Great acting from the 2 leads with Robin Williams voicing the talking dog. You can just sit, relax and have a fun time. It clearly doesn't try to be smart or serious, people should understand this. There's also a tiny but nice message in it, that once understood, makes a better image of it all.

Hail, Caesar!
Let me start out by saying that I love most of the Coen Brothers movies. I love their sense of humour and the high standards they cling to in filmmaking. That being said, I think they should have brought more story to this effort. The production values, the sets, the props, the overall look, and dialog are just about as close to perfect as human beings can get. Every scene is just about flawless. And there's lots of chuckles and wonderful parodies of old time Hollywood movies. The Esther Williams/synchronized swimming bit and the Gene Kellyesque barroom dance number were just magic. The little bit of story is hardly relevant to the rest of the movie. Indeed, George Clooney's role could have been trimmed out in editing and the film would have been none the worse for wear. So, go expecting a few really well-done parodies of old Hollywood musicals and a lot of inside jokes about Tinseltown gossip and fabulous production values. Just don't expect any story, cause there just ain't any.

Hardcore Henry
A first-person action movie from the POV of Henry, who's resurrected from death with no memory. He must save his wife from a telekinetic warlord with a plan to bio-engineer soldiers. Hardcore Henry is insane and ridiculous - it's just like playing a video game. It's over-the-top non-stop action and twisted offensive humour. It's not so much about story-telling, but more about providing an amusement park ride. Hardcore Henry is the very essence of explosive slasher craziness, and will literally let you experience it through the protagonist's eyes. It will go down in history, disputed forever if it's great or awful. I have taken a side for sure. This might just be the future of cinema. Go and see it, but only if you think you can handle it! One of those movies that only comes out once in a while. A must-see!

Rock the Kasbah
Bill Murray gives a decent performance as a talent manager stuck in Afghanistan when he discovers the talent of a young woman and literately changes the face of Afghan Television. The film is somewhat based on a real life event about a woman who song on a popular TV show in her country when this sort of thing is not allowed. You'd think having Murray in a movie would automatic make it hysterical. After all, I've seen movies were this man makes a cameo and it's the funnest moment in the movie. Definitely not the case with Rock the Kasbah. It has great jokes and fun moments but they are far too distant from one another to be effective in the movie. What's worse is that they try to use comedy to send a message and it fails miserably. Should I even mention that Bruce Willis and Kate Hudson are in it? Really does not matter cause they really did nothing in the movie, which is a shame cause I don't recall if Willis and Murray ever did a movie together. It's an OK movie but don't expect it to be outstanding.

Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein
Often hailed as Abbott and Costello's best movie of all, this is a side-splitting romp that just may be the best horror spoof of all time. Universal Studio's three most popular classic monsters (Frankenstein's Monster, the Wolf Man, and Count Dracula) are brought together one final time in a fitting swan song tribute. What's really so special about this movie to horror movie fans is that although they're involved in an obvious comical send-up, the three monsters are played straight throughout. If you were to edit out all the silliness, inside all the laughs is a traditional classic horror plot that works. It's a special treat to see the great Bela Lugosi return (at age 65) to play Count Dracula on screen one last time, and he is in many ways the best asset of the mix. It was a break for the actor from his dismal productions at minor studios, and this would also be the last time he found employment from a prominent studio. See this movie and you definitely will not be disappointed.

Triple 9
I went into this movie thinking it was gonna be good, but alas, I was let down. Good actors and a plausible story, but inevitably Triple 9 fails to deliver. There are no characters I could really root for with the possible exception of Casey Affleck (just a little). I found myself yawning several times throughout - it just didn't hold my interest. No real back story so it's hard to fathom what these characters are really all about. The bank robbery at the beginning was the most exciting part and it's downhill from there. Somehow I didn't buy Kate Winslet as a Russian badass. Very disappointing. Don't say you weren't warned.

The Program (2015)
Most people know the story of the biggest con in sports history. A 7-time Tour De France winner after recovering from testicular cancer, to be then stripped of everything he had ever achieved in the sport of cycling due to the use of performance-enhancing drugs. Ben Foster plays Lance Armstrong and it is quite un-nerving how much his likeness is uncanny to the man himself. He was a strong lead and definitely made this film watchable and interesting. Chris O'Dowd as hounding sports journalist David Walsh was solid. But I felt he was massively under-used. The race scenes look well made. The movie only really skimmed the surface of the entire story. It is a well-acted drama flick. For those people that don't know a lot about the story, they will get the most enjoyment out of it. But if you want to a good movie about Lance Armstrong and how he became the man he is today, there are 2 documentaries you should watch. They both go into much more detail on how big of an idiot Lance Armstrong is.

The Finest Hours
Based on an incredible true story that took place in 1952 when a giant storm dominated the seas by breaking a tanker in half. With only a few hours left to survive, the crew does what they can to survive. A rescue ship is sent to try and get to them, but the question is will they? I love the early 50's look, it captures it so perfectly. Everybody gives a good performance. The storms scenes are also well shot, you'll feel caught up in the storm also. It keeps you on the edge of your seat. It's easy to compare this to The Perfect Storm, it has the same feel to it. Well worth watching.

Gods of Egypt
This movie looks great on the outside but isn't really that interesting if you look a little closer. The visuals are lovely, some of the music is great and acting is... alright... for the most part. The first 20-30 minutes were fine then it went downhill. Bek was an entertaining, Ulysses-like character with some great lines, and Zaya was endearing and a feast for the eyes. They might have saved the movie with more time on-screen. But no, they disappeared in a headlong rush of CGI-driven scenes where there's no real feeling of peril, just raging gods and goddesses, collapsing buildings and strange creatures slithering around. Don't get me wrong. I know it's a fantasy movie, and it is imaginary gods we're talking about but I didn't feel I was entertained enough and it went on for far too long. With more focus on the characters, and a running length of 100 minutes, this would have made this a much better movie.

Miracles from Heaven
Based on a true story, this is a very uplifting movie about a 10 year old girl Anna diagnosed with a serious digestive problem which would have in the end killed her. Whilst coming home from hospital to recuperate, she climbs a hollowed out tree and falls inside. Miraculously after her tumble, she is cured of her problem. The story of a family in crisis, when the middle child gets a terminal illness, when all seems lost, a miracle suddenly happens. Whether you are religious or not, the story is compelling and the acting is solid. Jennifer Garner does a wonderful job at pulling you into their family dynamic and the tremendous amount of love for her daughter. Kylie Rogers who plays Anna is awesome. You can truly feel her emotional performance. Her acting range is clearly evident in this movie. She is such a talented young performer. It's not too preachy and all the family can enjoy it.

Kung Fury
A bat shit crazy comedy action movie done in an 80's cheesy style! Struck by lightning and bit by a cobra, an ordinary cop has a revelation which helps him master a new form of Kung Fu so powerful that only he, the chosen one, can learn. He has to travel back in time to stop Adolf Hitler aka Kung Fuhrer before he wreaks havoc in the future. Watching this left me with a big smile. It is fantastic and so funny. It is well produced and you can really feel that it's a genuine dream project of the creator. The pacing works brilliantly, the soundtrack fits perfect with the action and theme, and the special effects is really high class. Awesome in everything and just simply a great ride! It has laser shooting dinosaurs, a triceratop cop, kung fu, vikings with guns, time travel and Thor. It crams everything into the 30 min running time. Such a fun movie that has to be seen to be believed. Don't miss out on one of the best movies of 2015.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2
The sequel to the 2002 highly successful hit comedy is finally here with the whole family returning for another wedding. Like most belated comedy sequels, I wasn't expecting a whole lot from this movie, I expected it to play off what made the first movie successful and be relatively average. And that is more or less what we have here, in some aspects it delivers fairly well and in others it really doesn't. One of the things I liked hearing going into this movie was that the whole cast was returning and that it was being written by Nia Vardalos who also wrote the first one. It gave me some hope that it would have the same overall feeling. The comedic aspects of the movie were definitely there and there were some funny moments. There wasn't really a steady flow of comedy throughout the movie, it's sort of delivered in sections here and there. Pretty much, whenever it focused on the Greek aspects of the movie there were plenty of jokes, most of the time. And after seeing this movie, I gotta say, there are quite a few good laughs..... if you're Greek that is, but if you're not and you don't understand a lot about Greek culture, there really isn't much here for you. It's not as good as the first movie but there are laughs to be had from this movie. Worth checking out.
