Death Machine
Chaank Armaments is experimenting with the ultimate fighting machine which is part human – part machine. So far, the Hardman project has been unreliable and has killed a number of innocent people. The genius behind this project is Jack who lives in a world of models, toys and magazines. When he is fired by Cale for killing a few corporate officers, he unleashes the ultimate killing machine called the ‘Warbeast’ against Cale and those who would help her. Taking place in a gritty, tech-driven near future, this movie revolves around the developers of a fighting machine that is eventually unleashed to deadly results. Though its first hour is an uninvolving slog, it eventually warms up into a thrilling, future-set genre piece. It takes too long to get there unfortunately but once the cool looking Warbeast is let loose it really does go up a gear. The cast is capable if unremarkable, though Brad Dourif is on hand to add some typical crazy as only he can. Overall, this movie may appeal to patient sci-fi/action fans.

Bad Boys
Mick O’Brien is a young Chicago street thug torn between a life of petty crime and the love of his girlfriend. But when the heist of a local drug dealer goes tragically wrong, Mick is sentenced to a brutal juvenile prison where violence is a rite of passage and respect is measured in vengeance. This is the definitive teen cautionary tale about crime, punishment, revenge and at the very end, the rehabilitation from within. Sean Penn and Esai Morales bristle with intensity as sworn enemies on the streets and later as deadly enemies at the juvenile detention center they both land themselves in. There's solid supporting actors like Clancy Brown and the Jewish little bomb maker Horowitz, played with mischievous gusto by Eric Gurry. The build up, climax and then that solitary walk that Sean Penn takes after the final confrontation is fantastic. It's an 80's gem worth seeking out I think.

Knights & Emeralds
A white boy lives in a racially divided town. The only thing he cares about is playing his drums. A popular black band from school needs a drummer and he joins them, but being colourblind in this town makes life very difficult. Even though the title might make it sound like a swashbuckling movie set in the court of King Arthur, it is nothing of the sort. Set in Birmingham, it's a great and lively high school comedy which is heavy on music and tries to break barriers between the white and black communities. The story is full of good cheer and affectionate observations of daily life but of course there are stereotypical racist remarks thrown in as well which I found a bit uncomfortable. I thought it was a very good attempt at tackling both the troubles of growing up and the threat of racism but seeing as this is primarily a teenage movie it doesn't deal with racism in a hard hitting way. I did enjoy the fact that it ends in a feel-good moment. The only person I recognised in the cast was Warren Mitchell and he plays a very watered down version of Alf Garnett here. On the whole, I really liked this movie and it was a pleasant surprise. It's a shame it's not that well known but it definitely deserves to be checked out.

Revenge of the Shaolin Temple
A bloodthirsty lord called Pi Hao has young girls kidnapped to satisfy his lusty desires. He orders the killing of Shao Shao, one of the young girls, and his henchmen bury her body in the forest. Her sister Sho Kown goes after her not knowing she is dead. Pi Hao sends his men to check the place where the body is buried but the grave is empty and all the men who were sent to bury it are found dead… A pitiful Korean martial arts movie but at least it has one weird element to it - a bloody flying heart that inhabits a forest and splatters blood over people's faces!!! It's an incredibly confusing movie and I would imagine that's because it's been cut to shreds and is missing scenes. The dubbing is hilarious and I can imagine the British dubbing cast having a right laugh doing this movie. Another name for this movie is Firefist of the Incredible Dragon but there is nothing even vaguely like a firefist in this and no dragons, not even anyone called The Dragon, incredible or not. Seriously, it's not worth bothering trying to watch this movie. Steer clear of it.

Nightbeast (1982)
An alien creature from outer space crash lands in a small town and starts killing people. This is a pretty goofy and fun sci-fi creature feature but almost completely inexplicable; other than general mutilation I had no idea what the alien was up to, where he came from, why he wears the silver jumpsuit, etc. The movie does have some nice cheap gore effects though with multiple on-screen disembowelments, dismemberments and decapitations. I did like the look of the alien creature's face with it's fanged teeth and the laser gun it carries. The worst thing about the movie is the terrible acting. I have to say this is bad entertainment to the fullest but it's still worth having a look.

Just Like a Woman
Gerald is a smart, young, high-flying American banker. Everything is great until his wife finds another woman’s underwear in their bedroom and subsequently throws him out. He finds lodgings with Monica, a recently divorced 50-year old housewife, who is smitten with Gerald. But after their first night of love, Gerald avoids her. Monica feels used and betrayed until Gerald confesses he likes to dress up as a woman. This movie follows the story of a transvestite man's life with both the elements of drama and light comedy. The movie follows his struggles and process of accepting himself and his relationship with society by being a transvestite. Although there have been many movies that portray human sexuality, there are less movies that tells the story of particularly transvestites. For an average person to understand the motifs and psychology behind a transvestite person, this movie succeeds in introducing this particular identity through its easy to watch genre. The two main leads in Julie Walters and Adrian Pasdar are great. Overall, I found it a sympathetic portrayal of a man's double life and it was quite enjoyable.

Keeper of the City
A mad killer is murdering the mafia bosses of Chicago. Jim Dela is the cop investigating the crimes and thus gets into contact with Vickie Benedetto who is the wife of Vince, a psychotic man who hates his father’s mafia past. A terrible name for a pretty decent cop drama. It has all the ingredients of a 90's low-budget, gritty straight-to-video romp. The storyline has nothing you've never seen before but that's alright as long as it's engaging enough. It's got a great cast in Louis Gossett Jr., Anthony LaPaglia and Tony Todd. There are some slow spots but things generally moved along. Worth having a look.

Deadly Dream Woman
A woman who is a part of a Triad gang loses her memory after an attack. She is taken in by a kindly mother and daughter who run a prostitution business in Hong Kong. However, when she sees the man that killed her Triad boss/father, her memories return and she swears revenge. This HK movie might give you an impression in the first 10 mins that this is going to be an all-action affair but sadly it doesn't. It reverts to a bad comedy that moves the plot at a snail's pace. It is only in the final 15 mins that everything is redeemed and the viewer is treated to a fantastic assault on the villain's lair. Sharla Cheung doesn't have the physicality of other better Hong Kong action actresses but she gets the job done here in the leading role and looks very pretty alongside Chingmy Yau and Ken Lo as the baddie. It's a shame this movie had to resort to being a nonsensical comedy for the majority of it's time instead of being a full-on action movie.

Lady Dragon 2
A female karate champion seeks revenge on the men who raped her and murdered her soccer hero husband. A below average Cynthia Rothrock action movie set in Indonesia. It's completely dreary and devoid of any good excitement. Even the action sequences are not that great. I would have expected Rothrock's fights to be OK but they are indifferently choreographed. Billy Drago as the main villain gives yet another one of his over exaggerated performances that only he can do. It felt like he couldn't give a shit about the role. In the end, this is a low budget disaster that has the serious misfortune of also being a complete bore.

The Granny
Granny’s family wants her dead so they can collect her insurance. While she is on her death bed, she drinks an eternal life potion and returns to the land of the living. She is on a mission to wreak havoc over her greedy relatives. This is a low budget horror parody and while plenty of the jokes fall flat, there are some genuine laughs along the way. Most of the best lines in the movie fall to Stella Stevens as the title character. There is also dollops of gore as well including one kill in which a woman's neck is ripped open by reanimated animal heads on a fur coat. The movie is fairly raunchy, kinda purposefully funny, a bit gross, and a whole lotta dumb - in other words, it's just about the perfect movie to watch after coming back from an evening in the pub.

The LA police department have a special team of officers with a talent for reducing big-time crime. The team leader has an excellent track record for crime reduction in other big cities, but his methods are unconventional, and so is he – he’s a werewolf. This action-packed thriller is more of a twist on the traditional LAPD action movie rather than a twist on the werewolf movie. The action sequences are very exciting, adrenaline-fueled affairs and in the other scenes there are plenty of close ups and interesting sound effects to set the mood of the movie. Mario Van Peebles does his usual action hero thing with great flare, and Bruce Payne makes an excellent villain as Mr A Garou. The pacing is a bit off though as it doesn't really pick up until the 2nd half. It's a fairly entertaining movie elevated by some great directing, but the storyline could definitely have used a bit more work. If you're in the mood for a decent action movie then this could do the trick for you.

American Ninja 5
When a scientists daughter is kidnapped, American Ninja Joe Kastle, attempts to find her, but this time he teams up with a youngster Hiro he has trained in the ways of the ninja. The final installment of the American Ninja franchise takes on more a kids movie kind of approach which doesn't help if you're expecting some hard edged martial arts/action stuff. The kid Hiro more or less takes on the central role and not the American Ninja himself. In keeping it being kid friendly, there is more slapstick and groaning humour in the movie. The martial arts is decent but not exciting. It is easily the worst of the franchise and thankfully no more movies were made.

High Desert Kill
Like every year, Jim, Ray, Brad and Paul leave the town for a week to go hunting in the desert. But this year everything is different: There’s not a single animal to be found, the whole forest has fallen quiet. Two female campers they meet have mysteriously disappeared the next day, leaving their whole equipment behind. And then they start to behave weird themselves..an alien power is using them for cruel psychological experiments. For a TV movie, this isn't too bad with a good storyline to it. The characters aren't ones you warm up to with Marc Singer's cocky hunter being the worst of the lot. The New Mexico locations look nice, the story maintains a nice level of old-school spookiness with a strangely unsettling nature and there are some cool cheap special effects throughout. How they manage to destroy the alien threat to their lives is pretty lame though. I was still fairly entertained though and it's worth a watch.

Future Force
In the near future, a cop protects a reporter from an organisation of crooked, renegade cops who thinks she knows too much about them. This is a pretty average b-movie hokum with David Carradine and his robotic laser arm collecting bounty on the heads of villains. I can't say I'm a fan of Carradine and the fact that the supporting cast perform better than him here says it all. He looks bloated and a bit tired in this - simply going through the motions and the dialogue he spouts is hilarious. The whole movie is shot with a dingy, uninspired poor man’s karate movie look about it. The action scenes are OK though the scene in a junkyard in which Carradine's flying robot arm kicks the shit out of a villain is pretty funny to watch. It's not as bad as some says it is but I can't say it's good either. It is what it is and you'll just have to take a punt and see if it appeals to you.
