Primitive London
An American documentary that sets out to reflect society’s decay through a sideshow spectacle of 1960's London depravity. An interviewer confronts mods, rockers and beatniks at the Ace Café, listen in on obscure beat band The Zephyrs, smirk at flabby men in the sauna and goggle at sordid wife-swapping parties as we discover a pre-permissive Britain still trying to move on from the post-war depression of the 1950's. I'm not sure whether this terrible exploitation documentary is meant to be taken seriously or not? It also appears to be a staged documentary more than anything as it showed comedian Barry Cryer playing a role of a manager. The movie tries to set out to show the real London, the reality behind the headlines and rumours and manages to show everything except the real reality. For a supposed documentary trying to detail the Swinging 60's in London, it does a crappy job and just goes for the shocking instead. Even the voice-over is sarcastic about what is showing onscreen! Overall, I thought it was a complete waste of time.

The Seventh Continent (1989)
The story chronicles three years in the lives of a middle class family seemingly caught up in their daily routines, only troubled by minor incidents. Behind their apparent calm and repetitive existence however, they are actually planning something sinister. I've seen quite a few of Michael Haneke movies over the years and enjoyed all of them apart from this one that is (it was his first as director). The cinematography and atmosphere were there, but the story and character development were not. Bleak, emotionally dead people (seriously some of the lamest, unsympathetic characters I have ever seen) commit suicide because the boring, repetitive motions of their daily lives. All allusions and foreshadowing are heavy handed, and Haneke uses extended black screen cuts repeatedly to slow the pace even further. All of this leads to a movie that bores the viewer. A lot have said this is a masterpiece and that it may be in certain people's eyes but all it was to me was a masterpiece in dullness.

The Secret Rivals
Two rivals, Sheng from the South and Shao from the North, have one common enemy, the Silver Fox. The Silver Fox killed Shao’s parents and robbed from Sheng’s palace. When each one fails to defeat Silver Fox, the two decide to team up and win. This movie launched three bright stars of independent HK kung fu cinema in Don Wong, John Liu and Hwang Jang Lee (who keeps playing a character called Silver Fox often in movies). Two of the 3 actors became known as some of the greatest kickers in the martial arts business. Under the supervision of fight choreographers Richard Cheung and Tommy Lee, the fights look very nice here, highlighting the talents of the three lead actors. It leads to a a brilliant finale which is seperated into 3 fights. The story is nothing new but viewers will be watching this movie not for the story but the showdowns between the three leads and it does not disappoint in that. A great martial arts movie for fans who enjoy the genre.

Satanic Pandemonium
Sister Maria is known in the convent for her good works and charity, but, in the secret depths of her sexual fantasies, she is tormented by visions of another world – a world where her forbidden passions are allowed to run free. In this world Satan is her master. As her acts of violence and blasphemy mount, Maria realizes that she has been chosen by the Devil to destroy the convent and lead her sister nuns into hell! A Mexican nunsploitation movie and apparently the movie that inspired Tarantino to name one of his characters in From Dusk Till Dawn. The story crosses some scandalous boundaries such as Sister Maria trying to rape a young teenage boy. There is also lesbianism, female nudity, bloody penitence, visions of the infernal fire, murder of nuns and and a lot of blasphemy. All what you expect in a nunsploitation movie really! What a shame that it all ends with a poor ending. Apart from that it's quite an entertaining movie.

Need for Speed
A local street-racer partners with a rich and arrogant business associate, only to find himself framed by his colleague and sent to prison for the death of his friend. After he gets out, he makes his way out to California for a race to get revenge. But when the ex-partner learns of his intention, he puts a massive bounty on the racer’s head, forcing him to run a cross-country gauntlet of illegal racers in all manner of supercharged vehicles. Despite its paper-thin plot and many, many failed attempts at humour, this movie still works thanks to the generous amount of high-octane action sequences, and the undeniable charisma of Aaron Paul. This is one of the better attempts at translating a popular video game into a big screen experience, with the practical stunts and real-world action serving as a nice counterbalance to Fast and Furious's ever-increasing ridiculousness. It's silliness, predictability and over- inflated running time keep it from being a truly great movie, but it's still a hell of a lot of fun.

Sign
Featuring the band that accompanied Prince on his 1987 Sign o’ the Times Tour, including dancer Cat Glover, keyboardist Boni Boyer, bassist Levi Seacer, Jr., guitarist Miko Weaver, drummer Sheila E. and former member of The Revolution keyboardist Dr. Fink, the movie sees the group perform live on stage. What an incredible concert movie this is that shows Prince at the absolute peak of his powers. The concert captures both the energy and his non-stop drive on stage, a bolt of sexually charged lightning shooting through the mic, guitar, his band and anyone else lucky enough to be watching on in the crowd. Prince was the master showman, totally in control of everything happening on and off the stage. Every drop of sweat is earned by his slavish commitment to putting on the best possible show for anyone that came to see him. Most of the big hits on the Sign 'o' The Times album is performed although U Got The Look is shown by the video to the single. Watch this movie and be mesmerised by a genius musician who is sadly missed.

The Cracksman
Ernest Wright’s peerless prowess as a locksmith comes to the attention of a tough big-time crook, who feels that the little man would be a valuable asset to his crime kingdom. In order to persuade him into a series of jobs, he sets up a beautiful hostess as a trap, into which the hapless Ernest inevitably falls..! This comedy is a vehicle for diminutive British ginger comedian, Charlie Drake, who was briefly popular during the early 60's for his catchphrase, "Hello, My Darlings". Nowadays he is better known for the clip of him genuinely being KO'ed on his live comedy series. There are a few good laughs to be had here but it goes on for way too long. A good 30 mins needed to be cut. Also Charlie's good-natured humour and pratfalls wear awfully thin after almost two hours. The script is written to an OK standard but there should have been more laughs. Overall, it's a fine comedy which needed to be trimmed in order to to flow better with more humour added to the proceedings.

A Swarm in May
John Owen returns to the Choir School at the start of term to find that he is the youngest chorister in the school. This means he must also be Beekeeper – a traditional role. One of the traditional duties of the Beekeeper is to sing a solo in the Cathedral. Owen hates and dreads the prospect, so he persuades the smallest boy in the school, Iddingley, to take his place. Then, while exploring one of the Cathedral towers without permission, Owen finds something which makes him change his mind, and solves a mystery which has been baffling people for hundreds of years. An interesting coming of age drama from the Children's Film Unit. These type of stories are a dime to a dozen but one in which music plays a significant role are quite rare. The story line of the movie has moral lessons in it. The most important one is tied to one’s duties and the importance of fulfilling responsibilities. Many of the young actors were playing their debut acting roles in this movie and I'm not sure whether any of them had any successful careers in the profession when they reached adulthood? This is a very hard to find movie and I don't think it's shown on TV that often but if you do manage to come across it, give it a chance and I'm sure you'll grow to enjoy it.

The Clouded Yellow
After leaving the British Secret Service, David Somers finds work cataloging butterflies at the country house of Nicholas and Jess Fenton. After the murder of a local gamekeeper, suspicion (wrongfully) falls on their niece, Sophie Malroux. Somers helps Sophie to escape arrest and they go on the run together. After a cross-country chase they arrive at Liverpool with the intention of leaving the country by ship. Prolific director Ralph Thomas covered a wide range of styles with varying success throughout his career but is probably best remembered these days for comedies. However, there was a bit more to his bow than low brow comedies and this fantastic movie is one of those efforts. It's an underseen British gem of a suspense thriller in the vein of Hitchcock. Trevor Howard is excellent in another 'troubled man' performance which he tended to excel in and Jean Simmons' fragile heroine is a good foil for the older, more experienced actor as the two flee on a whistle-stop tour of the UK which affords the chance to see Newcastle, the Lake District and Liverpool all the while being pursued by Kenneth More and the police. In the end, it's an effective and exciting movie with two great leads, gorgeous location photography, and some thrilling action set-pieces.

Judgement Day
Two travelers stop over in a small village named Santana. Unbeknownst to them, Santana is a village where, once a year, Satan comes to Earth to claim souls, and they just happened to enter the village on that day. This is an uneven supernatural thriller. Director Ferde Grofe Jr captures an eerieness in some ruins where this movie was shot in the Phillipines and there's some chilling shots of marching demons during the night plus it has a fairly good cast which features Cesar Romero and Peter Mark Richman but somehow it doesn't hit the heights it should have been. Perhaps part of it was down to the poor performances of the two leads. Overall, this movie is never going to be re-discovered as a buried gem or anything like that. It might satisfy some viewers though.

A Candle For the Devil
Two batty sisters running a small hotel in Spain kill female tourists whose morals do not meet their strict religious standards. A lackluster Spanish horror flick with an unimpressive British star in Judy Geeson is rendered moderately interesting by making the murderous acts of two seemingly benign old maids/hoteliers a direct result of their sexual repression brought on by Catholic hypocrisy. Certainly, there have been horror movies about two sisters before, and certainly, there have been horror movies about evil doings going on in hotels before. This one establishes tension, not only between the sisters and Geeson, but between the sisters themselves. The only real problem for me was the lack of a real climax and a satisfying resolution. I didn't see any gore either but that could be because there are various versions of this movie floating about with different running times. An average horror in the end.

The Strange Affair
When rookie P.C Strange falls for an under aged girl, he is unknowingly compromised by a pair of pornographers. Meanwhile, seasoned Det. Pierce is out to catch mob boss Quince and soon both plots intertwine. An interesting crime drama. Director David Greene chooses to start the movie with the young copper Strange getting sent down and then flashing back to tell us how he went from being a new young lad on his first day to being banged up like a common criminal. Strangely for a movie with such dark subject matter it is often played light and quirky. There's a frivolous fantasy-like dreamy sex scene featuring a jail-bait Susan George, P.C Strange having two holes drilled in his face with a powertool and a rather strange relationship between Susan George's character and her pornographer guardians. The movies ends on a bleak note. Good acting from Michael York as the naive P.C Strange and Susan George looks so beautiful as a young woman. This movie is certainly worth having a look at.

Why Bother to Knock
An Edinburgh travel agent loses his keys and his fiancé in one night. A friend finds the keys and makes loads of copies with his address attached as a joke. She gives them to him as he leaves for a holiday. He gives the keys to several women he romances across the continent. He gets engaged again by phone and arranges to meet his fiancé at his flat, but the flat isn’t empty. A fairly tedious British comedy. Although the story is a bit of fun and should warrant a decent amount of screwball or smutty laughs the actual result is so dull. Despite co-starring the lovely Elke Sommer, there are no laughs to be had at all. I don't even remember smiling to myself at a set piece or line of dialogue. It doesn't help that Richard Todd seems so ill suited to the role. Somebody like Leslie Phillips would have been so much better as the lead as he was used to playing this kind of character. In short, don't bother to watch.
