Full Circle
After the death of her daughter, Julia Lofting, a wealthy housewife, moves to another house to re-start her life. All seems well until she is haunted by the sadness of losing her own child and the ghost of another child. A slow burner of a movie with a great performance by Mia Farrow as a grieving mother. There are genuinely creepy scenes with good use of shadows and an incredible score. The story and mystery is surprisingly shocking, but paced terribly. The mystery kicks in much too late. The movie is full of eccentric, slightly deranged characters which add to an overall sense of a world bent off its hinges by lingering trauma and madness. The movie ends rather suddenly and off-beat. Well shot and almost interesting but it didn't do it for me. Overall though, I thought this was a good movie to watch.

Tale of a Vampire (1992)
Alex is a lonely, centuries old vampire wandering the streets of London. The only woman he ever loved was lost to him centuries ago...but there’s a new woman in his life, a woman named Ann who bears an extraordinary resemblance to Virginia, the young girl Alex once loved. There’s another man stalking them both... a man named Edgar, who was once married to Virginia and has been looking for Alex for a very long time. This is a modern day vampire romance largely forgotten since its release. It is a vastly entertaining story that is heavily dark in its concept while Japanese director Shimako Sato delivers plenty of thick atmospheric scenery that convincingly builds up the movie's horrific situation and enables it in being believable. Julian Sands delivers a fluid performance as the vampire who is as tortured by the loss of his past love as he is with his eternal vampire life as it helps make him a sympathetic protagonist even if he is gorily killing people for his life substance that he needs to help him stay alive with Kenneth Cranham making a perfect on-screen rival for him. By all means, see it at least once, especially if you're a fan of vampire cinema.

The Sadist
Three people driving into Los Angeles for a baseball game have car trouble and pull off into an old wrecking yard where they are held at bay by a bloodthirsty psycho and his crazy girlfriend. An early precusor to the likes of Last House on the Left or The Hills Have Eyes where innocents travel take a wrong turn and enter a world of cruelty and humiliation. The fact that this was made in the early 60's means that it is never as explicit as something produced less than a decade later, but still generates a sweaty, unpredictable situation full of threat, leeriness and petty cruelties. Arch Hall Jr is great as the title character as you grow to hate him more as the movie wears on. Marilyn Manning is also very good too as his unhinged girlfriend. The direction by James Landis is pacey and certainly makes the most of the limited set-up. Ultimately, this is a well acted and tense thriller that is worth watching.

The Witchmaker
A psychic researcher and his assistants investigate a series of murders of beautiful young women in the swamps of the Deep South in which blood has been drained from their bodies. This obscure and unusual witchcraft movie isn't exactly a forgotten contender for cult classic status, but it is a fascinating example of a low budget picture possessing an incredibly adventurous plot. It is mildly bloody, but outside of the violent opening, the bulk of the brutality is fantasy oriented. It is also occasionally fun and entertaining, but does have a smattering of pacing issues when main villain Luther The Berserk played by John Lodge isn't onscreen dabbling in black magic hidden away in his lair, or stalking his prey. All in all, this movie is an undeniably interesting artifact that just didn't deliver enough to make it great.

Queen of Blood
A spaceship is sent to Mars after a alien distress signal is picked up. They find one female survivor, but when a crew member is found drained of blood it’s evident they have rescued a bloodsucking monster. This is a 60's Roger Corman produced movie which recycled elaborate special effects sequences from a Russian sci-fi epic about heroic space exploration and matched them with cheaply shot footage of a plot about a bloodsucking, green skinned female alien who was clearly the inspiration for the big haired Martian girl from Mars Attacks. This may be the only movie that featured Dennis Hopper and John Saxon together on screen. The main thing to commend about the movie is Florence Marly, the actress who plays the alien. She does a good job at being strange and otherworldly, aided by some clever lighting. A fairly good movie in the end.

In Manhattan, prostitutes are being murdered by a psycho. A detective is assigned to track him down and bring him in. A good sexploitation movie which is competently directed by Anton Holden and even pretty well acted, with a dark and grungy noirish feel. The story has an intriguing mix of nudity, crime drama, and psychodrama, with a degree of character development uncommon to such movies. There's some horror and blood, there is freeze-frames during the killings (with the dark memories of the killer's mother in audio) and those final 5 minutes in which the prostitutes take revenge on the killer for murdering their friends is excellent. I noticed that incidental music from the Dr Who story Tomb of the Cybermen is in this movie. Overall, a fun vintage sexploitation movie with a terrifically merciless ending.

Rock
A group of rock-music-loving students, with the help of The Ramones, take over their school to combat its newly installed oppressive administration. An extremely silly and overdone comedy, the movie is nevertheless still reasonably entertaining but would have been better had it not been for the presence of the vastly overrated group The Ramones who get to sing their crappy tunes a LOT! The characters are relatively fun to watch, and there are some genuine laughs along the way. The movie has a thing or two to say as a cultural study and an examination of teenage rebellion, but whatever messages may be there are weak, for the movie does not take itself too seriously, presenting many events and ideas that are plain out ridiculous. This is not a bad movie either way, and arguably it is worth checking out, but it would take a lot of guts to call this a good movie.

Trauma
An anorexic young woman escapes from a psychiatric clinic and meets a young man who wants to help. She is caught and returned to her parents, who are soon beheaded by a garrotting stranger making the rounds about town, apparently striking only when it rains. The orphaned young woman and her new lover launch their own investigation and are endangered when a link is discovered with the victims and a particular operation performed years before. Italian horror master Dario Argento's first venture into American movie-making was this tight, unique thriller. Trauma is a movie that isn't well liked by many critics, including some of Argento's own fans. It's a step outside of Argento's typical colourful style as it goes for a more subtle look. His usual creativeness is still on display with great camera work and atmosphere which helps to make the mysterious story all the more intriguing. This movie is rather light on gore, but still manages to have some shocking murder sequences thanks to some wild set-ups. Asia Argento, Dario's daughter, does a decent role as the young victim wrapped up in the mystery. Though not a patch on his earlier classics, this is a must-see for Argento fans and just right for those seeking an off-beat thriller!

Playing around with a Ouija board, a trio of friends succeeds in contacting the spirit of a young boy. Trouble begins when the evil spirit, Malfeitor, takes over one of their bodies. Cheesy dialogue, quirky characters, dream sequences and the odd gory kill make this a fine entry in 80's horror. With that said the heavy dialogue scenes bogs this one down a bit and keeps it from being quite as wild as it could have been. The kills are fairly minimal and spaced out leaving those dry parts to feel even longer. There are two dramatic people falling through window scenes including one which tracks a man as he falls onto the hood of a car. It's worth a watch for some 80's supernatural fun.

The Horrible Dr. Hichcock (1962)
The year is 1885, and necrophiliac Dr. Hitchcock likes to drug his wife for sexual funeral games. One day he accidentally administers an overdose and kills her. Several years later he remarries, with the intention of using the blood of his new bride to bring his first wife’s rotting corpse back to life. This Italian gothic horror movie has got it all: a haunted manor, a creepy pale older servant, necrophilia, artificial red and purple lighting, a cackling ghost in a bridal veil, a dusty skull and Scream Queen Barbara Steele. It's got a very derivative and forgettable story but its the spooky atmosphere and Victorian elements that'll keep you alert in this movie. This movie will provide fine entertainment for any fan of Italian horror.
