Xtro
Tony’s father Sam, abducted by aliens three years earlier, returns to earth and seeks out his wife and son, but Rachel has since been living with Joe and the reunion is awkward. Joe doesn’t trust Sam, and Rachel can’t quite decide what her feelings are for her two men. Sam is not the same as when he left, and he begins affecting Tony in frightening ways. This British movie is bonkers. It isn't often a horror movie makes my mouth hang open in astonishment but Xtro did it. I think it works so well because it's vague, surreal and doesn't waste time on frivolities. Things get wonderfully nasty in the movie in huge part due to the gross special effects. I can hardly tell if Xtro is any "good" or not but I kinda loved the ride. There are so many memorable moments and setpieces which includes a dwarf clown and an Action Man figure that grows to human size and comes alive to terrorise Eastenders' Anna Wing. This is one weird movie that deserves to be watched.

Castle Keep
During the Battle of the Bulge, an anachronistic count shelters a ragtag squad of Americans in his isolated castle hoping they will defend it against the advancing Germans. This is a bit of a strange anti-war movie. Seriously surreal, this failed movie is nevertheless not without interest, because of the cast. What does impress is the lovely cinematography with each shot vivid and memorable. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for the movie. It is very disjointed and the whole experience is somehow lacking in impact. The first hour drags and by the time the battle with the Germans arrive, most viewers will be so bewildered by what has preceded it they might have fallen asleep. The cast which includes Burt Lancaster and Peter Falk do their best with the odd script. Had the movie just been a straight forward war movie I'm sure I would have enjoyed it more.

The Killing
Career criminal Johnny Clay recruits a sharpshooter, a crooked police officer, a bartender and a betting teller named George, among others, for one last job before he goes straight and gets married. But when George tells his restless wife about the scheme to steal millions from the racetrack where he works, she hatches a plot of her own. This classic noir movie contains suspense, action, sharp-edged thrilling scenes and excellent performances. The movie is slickly narrated in original manner by means of several flashbacks, puzzles and a narrator. A very realistic plot with ordinary people planning a suspenseful heist. The movie displays the usual elements of noir cinema like the fatalism and tragic fate, loser characters, magnificent black and white cinematography in lights and shades and a femme fatale all wonderfully directed by the great Stanley Kubrick. A superb cast, relentless intrigue and fascinating thriller make this a fantastic movie to watch.

The Charge of the Light Brigade
A chronicle of events that led to the British involvement in the Crimean War against Russia and which led to the siege of Sevastopol and the fierce Battle of Balaclava on October 25, 1854 which climaxed with the heroic, but near-disastrous calvary charge made by the British Light Brigade against a Russian artillery battery in a small valley which resulted in the near-destruction of the brigade due to error of judgement and rash planning on part by the inept British commanders. Not at all a remake of the 1936 movie with the same title. It handles the same historic event, but with a totaly different feel and atmosphere. The movie can be split in two. The first half handles the training of the light cavalry, politics and intrigue in the unit between the officers. The second half the Crimean war starts and the movie handles some of the campaign up until the charge of the light brigade. The movie focuses heavily on the incompetence of the generals and officers with all their poor decision making. The movie has a slow build up to it`s climax. The final half of the movie is great with a somewhat anticlimatic ending. Good acting from the likes of Trevor Howard, Sir John Gielgud, David Hemmings and Harry Andrews. I felt the movie was a tad overlong for my liking but overall it was a fine retelling of what took place during the Crimean War.

Call Me Genius (1961)
aka The Rebel in the UK. Anthony Hancock gives up his office job to become an abstract artist in Paris. He has a lot of enthusiasm, but little talent, and critics scorn his work. Nevertheless, he impresses an emerging very talented artist. Hancock proceeds to con the art world into thinking he is a genius. This is a fabulous comedy for its great one-liners, its wit, its bright colours and the sheer joy of its performances by the cast. The script is brilliant for its poignant wish to break away from the rut for something better and also a sharp and nicely played critique of the hypocrisy and snobbishness of the art world. Tony Hancock is fantastic as the lead with his usual dour, depressed tones. The supporting cast includes John Le Mesurier, Irene Handl plus cameos from Nanette Newman, Liz Frazer and Oliver Reed. This movie is a sheer delight for Hancock fans. We will never see the likes of anybody like him again.

Ai City
In a dystopic and futuristic Tokyo, humanity’s genetic code has gone awry. At the forefront of the technology is Fraud, an organization conducting experiments on people such as Kei and Ai – two escaped “headmeters” with hefty psychokinetic powers. The sinister Mr. Lee wants nothing more to retrieve Ai back to his clutches, as she seemingly holds the key to immense power; Kei wants simply to keep Ai safe; and the evil Lai Lo Ching has his own master plan. Along with the help of the amnesiac headmeter K2 and a trusty sidekick, Kei must fight to protect Ai from the evils of Mr. Lee, Lai Lo Ching, and the state of the world itself! Well what a head trip this anime movie is! I honestly didn't have a clue what the hell was going on with the story - it's a total mess. It's like they took every bad cliche of the time and threw it in a pot and this came out. It does have some pretty colourful psychedelic scenes though, and the first car chase sequence is pretty cool. One of the characters is a cat that wears sunglasses! The story had potential but the way it plays out is so bad it's just gonna leave you confused and exhausted. Not an anime I'd recommend really.

The Moon Warriors
A kind-hearted fisherman, content with simple life, is reluctantly drawn into helping a noble emperor regain his throne from his evil brother. Probably the most beautiful and most romantic wuxia movie Sammo Hung ever directed. The story is not very nuanced and isn't that original but it is saved by the excellent actors, the excellent action scenes, the cool kung fu, and, yes, the killer whale that is best friends with Andy Lau's character! The whale even has a name of Sea-Wayne!!!! The action is fantastic and well choreographed, maybe it's a bit more obvious the characters are on wires, but in terms of martial arts skill it's actually better, and just as visually great to watch. What a cast that Sammo Hung assembled in Andy Lau, Maggie Cheung and Anita Mui. Overall, this is a fun movie that's difficult to dislike and, despite a few slow spots in the second half, I had a ball with it.

The Mystery of Chess Boxing (1979)
An eager young kung fu student Ah Pao seeks to improve his fighting skills with an aim to avenge his father's murder at the hands of the Ghost Face Killer, an overwhelming force of destruction and master of the death dealing Five Element Fist. His eagerness to study attracts the attention of the master of Chess Boxing, Jack Long, who is the Ghost Face Killer's arch enemy. Together master and student devise a wicked cross fertilisation of the Chess Boxing and Five Element Fist styles and set out to put an end to the Ghost Face Killer's deadly reign. aka Ninja Checkmate which is an odd title as there's no ninjas in the movie! Packed with action and heavy on comedic antics, it's hard not to have a good time with this movie. It seems like a movie that could have been devised with Jackie Chan in mind as the main actor Li Yi-Min goes by the same style as him. Li's got a distinctive, expressive face and some acrobatic moves that make him a solid lead in this movie. The real attraction, though, is Mark Lung, whose cackling assassin may not have the cool outfit his name should warrant but gets more fight scenes than the hero does, inserted during intervals in Ah Pao's journey to keep the pace flowing. The final confrontation between the Ah Pao, his master and the Ghost Face Killer is brilliant with many chess techniques used in the fight. This is a martial arts movie that is definitely worth watching.

Kung Fu The Head Crusher
Two undercover agents must smash a smuggling racket that is terrorising a small port town. One of the agents, Chin Chang, has an evil grip that can crush a skull in seconds. The thugs are killers but this agent is a killer in kung fu! This movie also goes by the name of Revenge of the Dragon or Tough Guy. The story and premise though formulaic, are just different enough to keep things between fights interesting. You don't have to wait for long for the fights as they come thick and fast throughout the movie. The hero of the movie uses the Iron Claw technique (the move that wrestler Kerry Von Erich used in his career) to crush the skull of his opponents. As this is a Taiwanese martial arts movie, stealing music from Western movies is the norm and this one uses the theme from Shaft as the opening and end music. This theme is really popular in Taiwanese martial arts movies for some reason! Other music you'll recognise come from Dr No and Once Upon A Time In The West. All in all, a very entertaining movie with some pretty vicious fights on show.

What Price Survival?
A duel between two master swordsmen for the hand of a beautiful young maiden leads to a 20-year-old grudge that proves deadly. One of the swordsmen, Pai Fukuo’s, son is kidnapped and raised by the rival swordsman, who tell him his real parents were murdered by Pai Fukuo. The child grows up and seeks revenge on Pai Fukuo, whom he believes has murdered his “real” parents, not knowing that Pai Fukuo is his true father. This is an updated version of One Armed Swordsman and to be honest it's not as good as it. The martial arts/sword fighting sequences might look good for some but when you look at them properly it's a couple of real blurry slow mo fights with camera trickery to make you think they're great. There is a lot of heart here that could have made for a great sword-fighting gangster movie set in 1930's China but it really doesn't come together enough to make it into a great movie. Average at best.

World Apartment Horror
A Yakuza underling is given the assignment to rid an apartment of its tenants within a week. He tries a variety of desperate tactics to no avail. Soon his problems get worse as an evil spirit makes its presence known. A quirky horror comedy by the creator of Akira has director Sabu in his first acting role. The movie is more focused on comedy and satire of xenophobic Japan than horror but has quite a lot of nice style and great performances, especially from Sabu who makes a great version of the typically aggressive yakuza. When the horror elements finally emerges you do wish there were more of them but in the end the comedy bits are more than enough. Entertaining enough to warrant a watch.

Ultraman: The Next
First Lieutenant Shunichi Maki of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force is a prestigious F-15 Eagle jet pilot. One night he is scrambled to intercept a UFO but his plane is enveloped in a red light. Maki quits the air force to spend more time with his young son who is ill but is whisked away by a secret military unit when a monster escapes from a laboratory and goes on a killing rampage. It seems that Maki has been infected by something when he encountered the red light in his plane and he may be the only one to stop the monster who assimilates other creatures into it's own body. A solid Ultraman/kaiju movie. This is a different, darker version of Ultraman, with the warrior looking more like the Guyver. Ultraman is as classic and iconic as Godzilla or Astro Boy, perhaps more typically appearing in children's entertainment, versus a mutating demonic space monster which eats people. The effects here are a wild mix of cheap CGI, miniatures, and silly costume design but it works. The final battle between Ultraman and the evil creature is pretty cool. Not the best Ultraman movie I've seen but it's still great and fans of the genre will enjoy it.
