Horror Hotline... Big Head Monster
A reporter from America, Mavis Ho, travels to Hong Kong to uncover the truth behind urban legends. She teams up with a radio producer named Ben, who specialises in urban legends on his program Horror Hotline. A number of his callers claim to have encountered a horrifying baby-like apparition that was born in the 1960's and has possibly killed many people. Mavis and Ben grow frantic to uncover the mystery of the infant before it claims more lives. I just could not get into this Hong Kong movie at all - maybe because it was really dull and unexciting. It had a great start but it got boring really quickly after that. It seems like it could be a great eerie horror movie but the filmmakers sort of lost their way whilst making it. It's one of those movies that's instantly forgettable after you've seen it. Not a movie I'd recommend to Asian horror movie fans.

A terminally ill photographer befriends a female traffic warden after she walks into his studio in Seoul, South Korea. This is a lovely Korean movie about a beautiful friendship that develops between 2 people even though the man is dying and he doesn't tell his female friend about his terminal illness. It is told with sympathy and without too much emotion. Some might feel it rather slow but I think that adds to the realism of the movie. I don't think it's a love story as some say it is as nothing romantic happens between the two. Low key and gentle, the movie rolls out the story much as life does. Without clichés and with unexpected events set against a backdrop of getting by. The two leads do a fantastic job in their roles. A very well made movie that is definitely worth catching.

So I Married an Axe Murderer
Just after a bad breakup, Charlie MacKenzie falls for lovely butcher Harriet Michaels and introduces her to his parents. But, his parents soon come to suspect that Harriet is actually a notorious serial killer – “Mrs. X” – wanted in connection with a string of bizarre honeymoon killings. Thinking his parents foolish, Charlie proposes to Harriet. But while on his honeymoon with her, he begins to fear they were right. Fresh off his success with Wayne's World, Mike Myers followed it up with this comedy. It's not as bad as some people make it out to be. It's not the plot that Harriet is or isn't a killer that drives this movie on but the the cast playing off each other and Charlie reacting to tell-tell signs of Harriet's behaviour that give this its charm. San Francisco makes for an appealing back drop too. Myers gets to play 2 roles in the movie - that of Charlie and his father (a Scottish immigrant). I'll be honest, I found Charlie's father to be very annoying and not funny at all. While it may not be as funny as Wayne's World or Austin Powers, there's enough amusing situations here to make you smile.

Junkers Come Here
Hiromi Nozawa is a young sixth-grader with a fairly normal life and a talking pet dog named Junkers. With her mother at work all hours of the day, and her father constantly overseas, tension in the household is building up quickly, making Hiromi concerned that her parents might not stay together much longer. Luckily, Junkers has the ability to grant three miracles... but are miracles strong enough to save Hiromi's family? This is a light, charming, and sweetly funny movie, especially when it comes to Hiromi’s relationship with Junkers, and the way that it handles the typical growing pains of a girl on the verge of adolescence and how she tries to cope with the news that her parents are on the verge of a divorce. It does it in an intelligent way. It’s also a typical coming of age story, where the inevitable encroach of adulthood conflicts with the lingering ties of childhood, and for Hiromi, who has two, usually absent and hard-working parents, she assumes that she has to be adult and responsible with how she faces life. It’s through Junker’s support that she figures out how to navigate her feelings and communicate what she really wants to her parents. I'm sure that this movie was the inspiration for the Japanese drama Marumo's Rule as it has the same breed of talking dog in that. Overall, this is an entertaining, funny, magical and heart-warming movie with a story that is well told.

Kanto Wanderer
Hanako, a delinquent schoolgirl is looking for some fun. She becomes transfixed on a small time yakuza named “Diamond” Fuyu. Hanako’s opposite is the virginal Tokiko who is drawn to handsome Katsuta, of the rival Izu Gang. Katsura is a traditionalist who honor’s the spirit of the Yakuza code. This is difficult because few in his profession still play by the old rules. Director Seijun Suzuki made a couple of great yakuza movies but this isn't one of them. It hasn't got massive gang fighting or anything like that going on. It's more about yakuza tradition, gambling and women. That's the plot, and though it might sound good, in this case it just fails to gel. Though there are definitely a few stylistic flourishes, mostly in the last 20 minutes, for most of the time it's bland and what's worse it really drags towards the middle. I really wanted to like this movie but it was too dull even though the acting by the cast was fine. Not one of Seijun Suzuki's best I'm afraid.

Danger on Dartmoor
A 13 year old girl Louise comes to stay with her two male cousins in a farmhouse in Dartmoor. With an escaped convict loose on the moors and a suspicious old lady hanging around the farm, the trio get lost on the moors when a thick fog comes rolling in. A typical CFF adventure with the usual mix of mild peril and wholesome antics. It's a fun little movie with straightforward characters and a predictable story. There are a couple of familiar faces to see which includes Patricia Hayes, Barry Foster (of Van Der Valk fame) and David Jackson (Gan from Blake's 7). There are nice views of Dartmoor as well. For a lightweight children's movie, it makes for a good time waster on a lazy afternoon.

2001 Yonggary (Reptilian)
When an enormous 200-million-year monster is awakened by an alien intervention, the city witnesses terror like never before. A set of ancient hieroglyphics are the only hope to stop this creature. An absolute stinker of a monster movie. It's a CGI remake of a 1967 Korean kaiju movie. I think the monster was Korea's answer to Godzilla. This movie is in a class of it's own in how shit it is. There is absolutely nothing positive to say about it. From the horrible acting, poor plot, pathetic dialogue and terrible CGI special effects - it's a disaster all round. I'm trying to think of something good to say about the movie but there isn't. This has to be the one of the worst if not the lamest movie I've ever had the misfortune of watching.

Space Firebird (Phoenix 2772 )
In the distant future, Earth is a desolate wasteland and humans are now produced in scientific laboratories who are then raised by robots. After being sent to prison for having a relationship with one of the Elder's daughters, space pilot Godo escapes and seeks the legendary firebird that has the power to restore life to planet Earth. From Astroboy creator Osamu Tezuka comes this exciting space drama. It's odd seeing a traditional anime once again having only seen CGI anime over the past few years. It does look rather dated but there's something charming about it plus it has an enthralling storyline. There's a lot crammed into the 2 hour movie with a couple of things that could have been cut out if I'm being honest. A number of plot elements such as the robot Olga’s jealousy over Lena and Godo’s relationship are not explored adequately enough. The story is quite epic, the animation especially in the first half of the movie is great, but the movie seems to lose its way around the half way mark. I still enjoyed the movie though. Anime fans interested in movies from the 70’s and very early 80’s will like this movie especially as it comes from a legend such as Osamu Tezuka.

Ha-Eun’s husband Joo-Chang is a mixed martial arts champion who regularly beats her up at home. Ha-Eun decides she cannot take it any longer and, in a spur of passion, publicly challenges Joo-Chang to a duel in the ring. For a Korean movie about domestic violence, I did not expect this to be a comedy which I found slightly disturbing because the scenes in which Joo-Chang hits his wife is horrific to watch. The movie's theme is neither revenge nor justice but of a woman's route to self discovery. A lot of the comedy comes from her MMA training with her incompetent coach. Don't even expect to see a transformation of a timid woman into a MMA killing machine either in this movie. That would be a bit far fetched. The climatic fight between husband and wife is hard to watch but I was rooting for Ha-Eun all the way. Do Ji-won gives a good performance as the abused wife and you can only sympathise with the shit she has to put up with. Park Sang-wuk makes for a typical boo-hiss villain as the cowardly fighter husband who feels like a big man when he batters his wife. I was glad to finally see him get his comeuppance. I'm sure many will be uncomfortable by watching a comedy about domestic abuse and I wouldn't blame them for switching off. It's a good movie but I don't think adding comedy to a hard-hitting subject was the right thing to do.

A Tree of Palme
A small puppet, Palme is tasked by his creator to look over his ailing wife, Xian. After her death, Palme is visited by a mysterious woman whom he mistakenly believes to be Xian. Shaken out of his sadness, Palme accepts her request to deliver something special to a far-off place known as Tama. This sets Palme off on a journey to discover his own emotions, and what it truly means to be human. This is an interesting but flawed Japanese re-imagining of the Pinocchio story. The main problem is it goes on for far too long. The story could have been told easily in 90 mins but it drags on for over 2 and a quarter hours. The main highlight is the animation of the world that the story takes place. It is stunningly beautiful but unfortunately, the animators seem a bit too taken with their own work, and plot often takes a back seat to lovingly created scenery shots. It's almost as if the creators forgot this was a movie not a travelogue. There is also little to no character development. Those who don't mind thin characterisation, serious pacing issues and looking at beautiful scenery might enjoy this movie.

Mike Bassett: England Manager (2001)
England's Football Association scrambles to find a replacement for the national team's manager after Phil Cope dies of a heart attack. Most candidates decline the position, and the FA must offer it to inept Mike Bassett, who accepts. He makes a series of bad decisions and loses his first two games as England manager. Bassett seems destined for a quick exit when he gets a chance at redemption after his team surprisingly gains entry into the World Cup. This is an absolute classic send up of English football and football in general. The mockumentry style chosen by the filmmakers gives the movie a sense of realism in parts. This movie will probably be very unfunny to people that have no knowledge of football as much of the laughs result from in jokes that only football fans will get such as the England game against Argentina which England win with their own Hand of God moment! Ricky Tomlinson is brilliant as Mike Bassett and the rest of the supporting cast do a good job as well. Football fans will love this movie as it's so funny.
