The Game
A wealthy investment banker, Nicholas Van Orton, is given a mysterious birthday present by his brother Conrad. When he participates in this game, unusual events happen that interfere with his daily routine, endangering his life. The closer he gets to figuring out the master behind the game, the more dangerous the events get, making him become closer to death. He must risk everything he has to discover the deadly secret. This is a fantastic movie by director David Fincher. This thriller successfully holds suspense the whole way through. The incidents displayed throughout the movie are shown in a sequence that continually makes us wonder what is happening, and the rapid change in events keeps us watching. There is a wide range of occurrences happening throughout the movie, which only make sense at the end of the story, so once we have seen a few of the experiences that Nicholas must go through, we are dragged into the movie, continually wondering who is good, who is bad, and how the events all link together. Michael Douglas gives a superb performance as Nicholas Van Orton. Anybody who likes mystery stories, thrills and suspense will love this movie.

The Funhouse
Four hormone-driven teens sneak into a funhouse at a traveling carnival, and plan to stay the night. Little do they know, it harbours a deformed sex-crazed maniac. Now, they've seen too much, and must find a way out, before the monster and his father find them...to dole out their own brand of carny justice. On the surface this movie seems like just another "mental defective/weirdo/lunatic" goes on a killing spree. Those were hardly rare in the 80's. But it's put together well with stylish direction and ample amounts of suspense. The cast is decent with Elizabeth Berridge doing a fine job as the Final Girl. The main flaws with the movie are the pacing in the first hour and the overall familiarity of the material. Still, it's worth a look if you like 80's horror.

The Secret Life of Pets 2 (2019)
Max the terrier must cope with some major life changes when his owner gets married and has a baby. When the family takes a trip to the countryside, nervous Max has numerous run-ins with canine-intolerant cows, hostile foxes and a scary turkey. Luckily for Max, he soon catches a break when he meets Rooster, a gruff farm dog who tries to cure the lovable pooch of his neuroses. While not entirely necessary, this sequel is pleasantly entertaining. The first one isn't an animated classic by any means, but it was a decent effort from Illumination. This movie features more of the same amusing pet gags with a passable, if unspectacular, story. It's not super original, but it's lighthearted and contains a decent message. Families should enjoy it nearly as much as the first.

During a life-threatening rescue mission in space, Jean Grey is hit by a cosmic force that transforms her into one of the most powerful mutants of all. Wrestling with this increasingly unstable power as well as her own personal demons, Jean spirals out of control, tearing the X-Men family apart and threatening to destroy the very fabric of our planet. I'm not sure why this movie has been panned by the critics as it's quite enjoyable. There's plenty of action scenes. It's very forward-moving in its storytelling, it doesn't slack once so you won't get bored, this movie hits the ground running right from the opening scene. For a movie about a female with almost limitless super powers, it's definitely a lot better than Captain Marvel for me. A lot has been said about Sophie Turner's performance as Jean Grey but I thought she was great in the role. If you like any of the previous X-Men movies you're going to want to see this one. Great fun.

This highly-touted movie about Elton John that blends the biopic and musical genres together has one big selling point: Taron Egerton's go-for-broke performance as the deeply troubled musical genius. Regrettably, the movie as a whole is self-indulgent and cliche-ridden to the hilt and goes down as a misfire. It doesn't start well with John visiting a psychiatric support group and telling his life story. It's a movie whose tone is dumbfounding, annoying and at times embarrassing to endure. The musical numbers in this movie are mostly perplexing and very rarely effective in conveying this life story. While I don't question the movie's accuracy in portraying how awful Elton John's personal demons were, a movie with more discipline almost definitely could have done better. A campy movie, one that keeps poking you in the eye with how bad it is, will not tell anyone's story all that well, let alone a legend like Elton John. The only good thing about it is Taron Egerton's portrayal of John. Disappointing.

Resident Evil: Retribution
As Umbrella Corp.'s deadly T-virus continues to turn the world's population into legions of flesh-eating zombies, Alice, the human race's last hope, awakes deep within Umbrella's secret operations facility. The further she delves into the complex, the more of her mysterious past is unveiled. Her global hunt for those responsible for the outbreak leads to a mind-blowing revelation; Aided by friends old and new, Alice fights to escape from a world on the edge of oblivion. This is the 5th movie in the Resident Evil franchise and this one delivers the same thing it's good at: mindless action scenes. There is hardly a storyline here. It directly takes place where the last movie left off with Alice captured by the Umbrella Corporation once again. Action fans will love this movie as it is full of such scenes. You won't have time to take a breath before the next action sequence begins. The fight choreography is good and the 3D enlivens the scenes. That's probably the shining spot of the whole movie. This movie is strictly for fans of the series and for those who love long action sequences filled with blood. Period. Anyone expecting a storyline or strong performances should stay away from this movie.

The Last Flight of Noah
An American pilot gets more than he bargained for as he agrees to fly a strait laced evangelist, an assorted bunch of farm animals and two young stowaways on a mission to the South Pacific in a B-29 plane. This amusing Disney movie packs fun situations, easygoing characters, emotions, humour and features impressive flying sequences with a Boeing B-29 Super Fortress. A good cast which includes a sympathetic turn by Elliott Gould as a pilot who must try and find a way off a deserted island following the crash landing and Genevieve Bujold who holds her own admirably. There's also two likable kids playing orphans in Ricky Schroder and Tammy Lauren and 2 Japanese actors who play soldiers still thinking that WWII is raging. The island location is beautiful. Overall it's an enjoyable family movie.

Perfect Skin
A young Polish woman is kidnapped by a mysterious tattoo artist and held in an underground cell. There is an interesting little indie movie with great cinematography and a good performance by Richard Brake as a tattoo artist looking to create his perfect work of art. It certainly is not boring. The movie though has all the depth of a porn movie and is edited at times with the quick cuts used in music videos, an attempt to be stylish that doesn't always work. There is zero depth to the characters and no real development. For a thriller, there was no suspense. The gore, which appears to be done the old fashioned way, without CGI is great. Worth a watch though for Brake and the transformation of the lead actress, along with how beautifully it is shot, it just needed more of a story.

JCVD stars as a policeman in France who finds out that he had a twin brother that he never knew who has been murdered. Wanting to dive more into the mystery of his brother's death, he travels to New York and takes his brother's place in hope of some answers. But he gets a lot more than he hoped for because Russian thugs are trying to kill him. This movie is actually not that bad by Van Damme standards. It's one of his more entertaining ones. The action scenes are fast and brutally realistic and Van Damme does manage to generate empathy for his character. However, Natasha Henstridge steals the show. She is such a gorgeous creature that one can become transfixed watching her on the screen. She is truly a beauty and this movie is worth watching just to see her on screen!

When Eight Bells Toll
Philip Calvert is a tough navy secret service agent called in to track down gold bullion smugglers. He follows the trail to Greek tycoon Sir Anthony Skouras' yacht off the Scottish coast, but are his suspicions right? This is a 007 like action movie with Anthony Hopkins taking on the mantle of Commander Philip Calvert, a man very similar to James Bond. Calvert and Bond have quite a few things in common. They're both reckless adventurers with an attitude problem and an aversion towards authority. They're both good with the ladies and don't mind randomly killing a handful of nameless bad guys. It's a very decent and entertaining action/adventure movie, just don't expect the same dazzling tempo, ingenious gimmicks or impressive stunts as you would in an actual James Bond movie. This is a totally unpretentious action flick with a strong lead performance from Anthony Hopkins and various terrific choices of location in Scotland. It's fun to see a young Anthony Hopkins doing the action hero thing, just a shame he wasn't allowed the chance to reprise the role in another movie. Well worth watching.

The Bromley Boys
It's the early 1970s, and a 15-year-old's greatest passion is for one of Britiain's worst football teams - Bromley FC in the Isthmian league. A decent feel-good first romance story interwoven round the highs and lows of Bromley FC. It's based on a true story, with a great soundtrack weaving through the movie. If you have ever stood on the terrace at your local football club, or supported your child at a school game, or cheered a friend playing at the local park then this movie will transport you back. It's not a laugh out loud comedy but you will want the hero of the movie Dave Roberts to win the girl and see his team survive relegation. It's 90 mins of fun with no blood and guts, no high speed car chases, no nudity - just good old fashioned family entertainment. Give it a chance and see what you think.

Bunraku
In a future society where guns are illegal, a fist-fighter and a swordsman pummel and slash their way through a reclusive leader's army of thugs. This movie's familiar plot is presented as an experimental piece of performance art that keeps you guessing as to whether or not the story will go quite as you're expecting. If I had to describe Bunraku's presentation, I'd have to liken it to a life-size pop-up comic book being read stylishly aloud on a live stage. Assuming you get used to the style and don't mind the intentionally shallow story, you won't find much to hate about Bunraku. You'll be reasonably entertained by the constant action and colourful motion, and aside from some occasionally imperfect fight choreography, this is a well-made movie.

No Sex Please: We
A mistaken address causes a newlywed couple's apartment to fill up with mail-order Swiss porn...right before a visit by the wife's father, a bank president who happens to be the husband's new employer. An amusing, if predictable fare in the manner of the 'Carry On' movies of the period which used to be broadcast regularly on British TV during the 80's. It shows how we stuffy Brits tie ourselves in knots when it comes to the subject of sex. The funny thing is how the cast, led by Ronnie Corbett, handle their predicament and it has to be said, they cope with aplomb. As you might expect, the plot is all about mix-ups, keeping a stiff upper lip, maintaining a veneer of social respectability, not getting found out about something someone hasn't done and failing miserably. British viewers will also have fun spotting the large amount of well known names in the movie (Ian Oglivy, Arthur Lowe, David Swift, Frank Thornton, Michael Robbins etc), who all put in good comedy turns. Plus, being a sex farce, you also get to see Valerie Leon and Margeret Nolan running round in their underwear! Those who like the Carry On movies should enjoy this farce.

Thelma
The lonely religious Thelma is a repressed teenager that has just left her overprotective father Trond and her disabled mother Unni in the countryside of Norway to join the university in Oslo. She has no friends and one day she has an epileptic seizure in the library. Then she befriends the student Anja and tastes wine and cigarette for the first time. Soon they fall in love with each other and Thelma feels uncomfortable with the situation that is against her religious values. Thelma is submitted to a series of exams to find the cause of her seizures and she thinks of Anja during the tests. When Anja disappears, Thelma learns that she has telekinetic powers. Thelma decides to return home where she recalls what she did with her family when she was young. This is an original movie with a different story, great screenplay and magnificent performance of Eili Harboe. The top-notch and beautiful cinematography and camera work give a magnificent beginning to this movie. The genre of this movie is hard to be labelled since it blends art, drama, mystery, romance, eroticism and horror in right doses. Give a chance to "Thelma" and you may have a good surprise.
