Child
After moving to a new city, young Andy Barclay receives a special present from his mother - a seemingly innocent Buddi doll that becomes his best friend. When the doll suddenly takes on a life of its own, Andy unites with other neighborhood children to stop the sinister toy from wreaking bloody havoc. This is a nice and creative modern reimagining of the first Chucky movie. To be honest before watching I did think it was unnecessary to remake the movie. The plot is different to the original as it drops the supernatural aspect entirely and the story structure was a new take on the worn out slasher structure. Chucky's face has been altered slightly too. Mark Hamill who takes over from Brad Dourif as the voice of Chucky was incredibly charming and unique, using a calm and controlled almost innocent voice with a sinister undertone. The practical effects and puppetry on Chucky is very good. Gorehounds will love this movie as it features 2 nasty kills by the psycho doll. All in all, I really enjoyed the movie and it's really worth checking out.

The Christmas Tree
A young boy promises his friends at a London hospital that he can deliver a huge Christmas Tree to St Martin's Children Hospital by 6pm on Christmas Eve. He makes a bet and is determined not to lose. The next day he steals his family's Christmas Tree which has been growing in the back garden for 6 years and with his sister and younger brother they travel down to London carrying the tree. A well-made and entertaining little movie by the Children's Film Foundation, its real value is as a glimpse of a part of Britain that has changed since this movie was filmed. The storyline is very Enid Blyton-like with the kids getting involved with a pair of thieves on the run and stumbling onto a M.O.D firing range. The child actors are OK apart from the annoying little brother. For anyone of the right age and/or from that part of the world where this movie was shot (SE England) it is something of a nostalgia-fest.

The Criminal (1960)
Johnny Bannion is an ex-con who's taken part in the robbery of a racetrack but is caught and sent back to prison; but not before he has time to bury the cash from the gig. Back in prison, Johnny is keeping the cards close to his chest but finds there are big crime forces wanting a piece of his action. With plans afoot to "twist" his arm, and his girlfriend kidnapped, Johnny knows something is going to have to give... Director Joseph Losey, working from a sharp, precise script, offers a fascinatingly vivid depiction of the seedy criminal milieu, relates the arresting story at a steady pace, and maintains a fierce, unrelenting intensity that never lets up to the literal bitter end. The movie further benefits from good acting by a stellar cast, with especially stand-out turns from Stanley Baker, Sam Wanamaker, Gregoire Aslan as cunning Italian mobster Frank Saffron and Margit Saad as Johnny's brash, enticing new girlfriend Suzanne. The crisp, fluid black and white cinematography, the colourful characters, John Dankworth's rousing jazzy score, the uncompromisingly grim'n'gritty tone, a potent central message about how greed and money lust destroys the human soul and the powerful downbeat ending make this a great drama to watch.

Leave No Trace
A father and daughter live a perfect but mysterious existence in Forest Park, a beautiful nature reserve near Portland, Oregon, rarely making contact with the world. But when a small mistake tips them off to authorities, they are sent on an increasingly erratic journey in search of a place to call their own. This is one of those rare diamonds that somehow got no mainstream attention. It's a heartbreaking drama of a father daughter relationship with the father suffering from PTSD. This movie is so great in just showing you what goes on without ever really telling you. That is top notch screenwriting. Every information you get is conveyed by what you see rather than dialog. Ben Foster and Thomasin McKenzie are excellent as the main leads. This movie is not for everyone. It has a very minimalistic style. There is not much talking in this movie and when there is it is very calm and short. But if you have a little patience for that sort of movie you will get an outstanding movie experience.

Cover Girl Killer
The hunt for a sadistic serial killer is on when a number of pin-up models are murdered, found in the same place, pose and outfit as when they graced the covers of a magazine. Aided by the magazine's owner, the police set a trap to lure him out. Despite only lasting an hour, this movie about a serial killer who has a grudge against cover girls - a la The Lodger and Jack the Ripper - rarely flags and has an energy which lifts it above other B movies of the time. It also has Harry H Corbett, best known these days for Steptoe and Son, proving he could act in a serious role. He is genuinely creepy, chilling and calculating. This is an obscure movie but it's worth catching if you get the chance.

The Ghost of St. Michael's
A new schoolmaster scoffs at the legends of a ghostly piper which haunts the school, until two headmasters come to a grisly end. Who will become the next victim of the phantom piper? This is a pretty good movie, though compared to some of Hays' other works, comedy is less important to the movie and the murder mystery often takes precedence. And, considering it was made during WWII, the Nazi angle didn't come as much of a surprise. Definitely a product of its times but a good one as well...one that stands up pretty well today.

Blood from the Mummy
A British archaeologist and his team bring an embalmed Egyptian royal princess Tera back from their latest expedition, and trouble ensues when the archaeologist's daughter is possessed by the spirit of Tera. The 4th and final movie in the Mummy franchise from Hammer Studios stands out from the previous 3 due to the distinct lack of a Mummy. The plot is a bit of a mess but the creators do a competent enough job of making the best of it and to their credit it comes off passable. Starring the alarmingly beautiful Valerie Leon in a rare leading role, it barely feels like a Mummy movie at all. With the questionable storyline, the baffling ending and some seriously hokey performances it's sad to see the franchise end on such a note. It however isn't bad, it's just unusual, unexpected and an odd choice. One of Hammer's weaker efforts.

A Touch of Love
Rosamund Stacey becomes pregnant after a brief affair with a television newsreader. Against the advice of her best friend, Lydia, Rosamund chooses to keep the baby and adjusts her life to include both her studies and her pregnancy. However, when the baby is born, an unforeseen complication threatens the self-sufficient life Rosamund plans for herself. This is a movie that looks at the plight of a young girl who finds herself pregnant with no father in sight, and the trials and tribulations she faces over what do with the unborn baby. A movie which rides the trend for gritty kitchen sink dramas without ever sugar coating the story. It's surprising to learn that this movie was released by Amicus who were best known as Hammer's main British rival and for releasing horror anthologies. American actress Sandy Dennis is fine in the main role and dons a convincing British accent with Ian McKellen playing the TV presenter who gets her pregnant. Watch out for a cameo from Penelope Keith as a nurse at a hospital. An interesting movie to have a look at.

From Time to Time
While staying at his grandmother's house during the last days of the Second World War, 13-year-old Tolly starts to see ghosts of his ancestors and helps to solve an age-old mystery. Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes brings the viewer an adaptation of Lucy M Boston's 2nd book of six in the Green Knowe stories. Don't be mistaken that this is based on The Children of Green Knowe which the BBC made during the 80's and was fantastic. This is the movie about The Chimneys of Green Knowe. The story is exciting and has a wonderful cast with a couple of the Downton cast even appearing in it. The directing by Julian Fellowes is great with the story jumping back and forth in time between two generations of family and showing the developing relationship between Tolly and his blind ancestor Sarah. It's a lovely movie to watch. Very enjoyable for the whole family.

Academic overachievers Amy and Molly thought keeping their noses to the grindstone gave them a leg up on their high school peers. But on the eve of graduation, the best friends suddenly realise that they may have missed out on the special moments of their teenage years. Determined to make up for lost time, the girls decide to cram four years of not-to-be missed fun into one night - a chaotic adventure that no amount of book smarts could prepare them for. This movie has been compared to Superbad and I see the resemblance. This movie does so many things right and there's a lot to like about it. The well-written comedy and jokes hit the right note, the really stellar directing from Olivia Wilde should be noteworthy as this is her directional debut, and of course the main characters portrayed amazingly by Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein who have brilliant chemistry together which just makes the emotional punches of this movie that much more effective. Billie Lourd was hilarious as the crazy girl Gigi. The only thing I wasn't keen on was the soundtrack. A couple of songs were fine but the majority was terrible. I would suggest to anyone of any age who wants to see a feel good, funny, well acted and well written movie to check it out now!

Toy Story 4
Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the rest of the gang embark on a road trip with Bonnie and a new toy named Forky. The adventurous journey turns into an unexpected reunion as Woody's slight detour leads him to his long-lost friend Bo Peep. As Woody and Bo discuss the old days, they soon start to realise that they're worlds apart when it comes to what they want from life as a toy. I thought that a 4th installment in this franchise would be a mistake considering how perfect Toy Story 3 ended but now, after watching this movie I'm glad they decided to make this movie. Who cares if some things have been rehashed from the other 3 movies and may be repetitive to some viewers. I don't blame Pixar for sticking to the same tried and tested formula as it's worked before and it works for this movie too. The whole gang is back to bask in that gloriously animated sun, with a plethora of new memorable characters joining in on the fun with some valuable life lessons thrown in on their journey. It's a joy to watch these colourful rag-tag bunch of characters interact with their even more vibrant worlds and from carnivals, playgrounds, kindergarten rooms and an antique shop. The movie has an imaginative treasure trove of sight gags, witty dialogue and personality beats that culminate to make a highly entertaining all-ages affair that will have adults and children laughing. Toy Story 4 is another impressive feat of film-making by Pixar and one that's sure to charm fans of old and newcomers alike.

Men in Black: International

Men in Black: International
The Men in Black have expanded to cover the globe but so have the villains of the universe. To keep everyone safe, decorated Agent H and determined rookie M join forces - an unlikely pairing that just might work. When aliens that can take the form of any human arrive on Earth, H and M embark on a globe-trotting adventure to save the agency and ultimately the world from their mischievous plans. I was hoping that this MIB reboot was going to be a wild ride like the original trilogy in that it would be both hilarious and interesting but it didn't turn out to be the case. I have to say that I was quite disappointed. The visuals were really good and the fact that they showed even more different aliens that the viewer haven't seen before was really nice. But the story is just not as good as you think it is going to be, you can expect and piece everything together half an hour before the characters themselves do. I did like the pairing of Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson as H & M though. I think this movie suffered because the genius behind the original trilogy in Barry Sonnenfeld wasn't the director. If you are looking for a fun action adventure then you can watch this because it does have some good action scenes and some of the jokes are pretty funny but it's not a patch on the previous movies.

Criminal
CIA agent Bill Pope dies while traveling to a secret location to meet a hacker who can launch missiles at will. Desperate to find his whereabouts, officials turn to an experimental neurosurgeon who can transfer memories from one brain to another. The guinea pig for the procedure is Jerico Stewart, a violent and dangerous death-row inmate. Now gifted with Pope's skills and knowledge, Stewart must race against time to stop a sinister international conspiracy. Remember the 1997 movie 'Face/Off' with Nicolas Cage & John Travolta? This is kind of like that, but one-sided, what with one of them being dead, both minds go into one body. The start of the movie is very intense and really pulls in your interest, with a selection of plots being introduced and I felt they all connected quite nicely at the end. The action sequences provide nothing new or inventive to the genre, but they are well done and they always feel like a payoff for decent storytelling. The primary issue I had with Criminal is the middle section, which becomes very lacklustre and slow, and to be honest is a bit boring. The cast is great and Kevin Costner is particularly impressive as Jericho when he has to deal with his own thoughts and Pope's as well. Gal Gadot also performs well alongside Costner. All in all, Criminal has clever ideas and is worth watching but it won't win any awards despite it being a decent crack at the action movie genre.

He Got Game

He Got Game
Released for a week from prison in a shady deal in which he has to convince his son to sign with a particular university, the father of a basketball prodigy struggles to reconnect with his teenage children. While basketball is a prominent theme and the movie opens with majestic shots of various kids poetically playing the game, this is less a sports movie and more a study of estranged relationships with Denzel Washington and Ray Allen having close to equal screen time as father and son respectfully. Allen is nowhere near as polished an actor as Washington, but he has a nicely complex character, torn between offers from various universities, the wishes of his girlfriend, a desire to take responsibility for his sister and lots of resentment towards his father. The movie runs a little long with a subplot involving a hooker next door that could have been omitted completely; the ending is also a tad too maudlin for its own good. The vast majority of the movie tugs on the right emotional strings though and together with some awesome music and excellent camera-work, this is a compelling watch regardless of one's interest in the sport of basketball.

Vacancy
When David and Amy's car breaks down, they have little choice but to spend the night at a remote hotel. The couple entertain themselves by watching low-budget slasher movies on TV until they realise that the horrifying images they see were recorded in the room in which they are staying. With hidden cameras capturing their every move, David and Amy must find a way out before they become the latest stars in a snuff film. Vacancy is very much a mixed bag as far as horror movies go. On the plus side, it doesn't resort to using teenage actors which makes a big different. The atmosphere is excellent and the pacing is top notch. There's never too much going on, but never a lag either. The movie does transition well from suspense to calm to suspense again in just the way every thriller does. Also Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale turn in solid performances. However, it uses every single horror clichรฉ going. Now to the director's credit, some are done quite well, but that doesn't excuse the fact that most are tired and overdone as it is. I don't think the ending works that well either. The movie showed promise, but as you soon realise, it's nothing much other than a rehash of familiar plots and situations.

Thunderbirds Are GO
International Rescue are sent as security for the first manned flight to Mars and foil super villain The Hood who has sabotaged the space craft once before. The ship successfully lands on Mars. But later, as the astronauts try to return to Earth, they encounter grave technical difficulties, and the Tracy Brothers must fly into space to save them. This was the movie spin-off for Gerry Anderson's hugely popular puppet TV series. It successfully captures the magic of the show and is as exciting adventure as you could wish for. What is good about Thunderbirds is that Gerry Anderson didn't pander to kids in any way, instead he told adult story lines that just so happen to have puppets instead of actors on the screen. The cameos by Bob Monkhouse and Cliff Richard help to make this a lively experience, and the globetrotting storyline is as explosive and action-packed as you'd like. Fans of the original Thunderbirds series will enjoy this movie.
