Perfect Skin
A young Polish woman is kidnapped by a mysterious tattoo artist and held in an underground cell. There is an interesting little indie movie with great cinematography and a good performance by Richard Brake as a tattoo artist looking to create his perfect work of art. It certainly is not boring. The movie though has all the depth of a porn movie and is edited at times with the quick cuts used in music videos, an attempt to be stylish that doesn't always work. There is zero depth to the characters and no real development. For a thriller, there was no suspense. The gore, which appears to be done the old fashioned way, without CGI is great. Worth a watch though for Brake and the transformation of the lead actress, along with how beautifully it is shot, it just needed more of a story.

JCVD stars as a policeman in France who finds out that he had a twin brother that he never knew who has been murdered. Wanting to dive more into the mystery of his brother's death, he travels to New York and takes his brother's place in hope of some answers. But he gets a lot more than he hoped for because Russian thugs are trying to kill him. This movie is actually not that bad by Van Damme standards. It's one of his more entertaining ones. The action scenes are fast and brutally realistic and Van Damme does manage to generate empathy for his character. However, Natasha Henstridge steals the show. She is such a gorgeous creature that one can become transfixed watching her on the screen. She is truly a beauty and this movie is worth watching just to see her on screen!

When Eight Bells Toll
Philip Calvert is a tough navy secret service agent called in to track down gold bullion smugglers. He follows the trail to Greek tycoon Sir Anthony Skouras' yacht off the Scottish coast, but are his suspicions right? This is a 007 like action movie with Anthony Hopkins taking on the mantle of Commander Philip Calvert, a man very similar to James Bond. Calvert and Bond have quite a few things in common. They're both reckless adventurers with an attitude problem and an aversion towards authority. They're both good with the ladies and don't mind randomly killing a handful of nameless bad guys. It's a very decent and entertaining action/adventure movie, just don't expect the same dazzling tempo, ingenious gimmicks or impressive stunts as you would in an actual James Bond movie. This is a totally unpretentious action flick with a strong lead performance from Anthony Hopkins and various terrific choices of location in Scotland. It's fun to see a young Anthony Hopkins doing the action hero thing, just a shame he wasn't allowed the chance to reprise the role in another movie. Well worth watching.

The Bromley Boys
It's the early 1970s, and a 15-year-old's greatest passion is for one of Britiain's worst football teams - Bromley FC in the Isthmian league. A decent feel-good first romance story interwoven round the highs and lows of Bromley FC. It's based on a true story, with a great soundtrack weaving through the movie. If you have ever stood on the terrace at your local football club, or supported your child at a school game, or cheered a friend playing at the local park then this movie will transport you back. It's not a laugh out loud comedy but you will want the hero of the movie Dave Roberts to win the girl and see his team survive relegation. It's 90 mins of fun with no blood and guts, no high speed car chases, no nudity - just good old fashioned family entertainment. Give it a chance and see what you think.

Bunraku
In a future society where guns are illegal, a fist-fighter and a swordsman pummel and slash their way through a reclusive leader's army of thugs. This movie's familiar plot is presented as an experimental piece of performance art that keeps you guessing as to whether or not the story will go quite as you're expecting. If I had to describe Bunraku's presentation, I'd have to liken it to a life-size pop-up comic book being read stylishly aloud on a live stage. Assuming you get used to the style and don't mind the intentionally shallow story, you won't find much to hate about Bunraku. You'll be reasonably entertained by the constant action and colourful motion, and aside from some occasionally imperfect fight choreography, this is a well-made movie.

No Sex Please: We
A mistaken address causes a newlywed couple's apartment to fill up with mail-order Swiss porn...right before a visit by the wife's father, a bank president who happens to be the husband's new employer. An amusing, if predictable fare in the manner of the 'Carry On' movies of the period which used to be broadcast regularly on British TV during the 80's. It shows how we stuffy Brits tie ourselves in knots when it comes to the subject of sex. The funny thing is how the cast, led by Ronnie Corbett, handle their predicament and it has to be said, they cope with aplomb. As you might expect, the plot is all about mix-ups, keeping a stiff upper lip, maintaining a veneer of social respectability, not getting found out about something someone hasn't done and failing miserably. British viewers will also have fun spotting the large amount of well known names in the movie (Ian Oglivy, Arthur Lowe, David Swift, Frank Thornton, Michael Robbins etc), who all put in good comedy turns. Plus, being a sex farce, you also get to see Valerie Leon and Margeret Nolan running round in their underwear! Those who like the Carry On movies should enjoy this farce.

Thelma

Thelma
The lonely religious Thelma is a repressed teenager that has just left her overprotective father Trond and her disabled mother Unni in the countryside of Norway to join the university in Oslo. She has no friends and one day she has an epileptic seizure in the library. Then she befriends the student Anja and tastes wine and cigarette for the first time. Soon they fall in love with each other and Thelma feels uncomfortable with the situation that is against her religious values. Thelma is submitted to a series of exams to find the cause of her seizures and she thinks of Anja during the tests. When Anja disappears, Thelma learns that she has telekinetic powers. Thelma decides to return home where she recalls what she did with her family when she was young. This is an original movie with a different story, great screenplay and magnificent performance of Eili Harboe. The top-notch and beautiful cinematography and camera work give a magnificent beginning to this movie. The genre of this movie is hard to be labelled since it blends art, drama, mystery, romance, eroticism and horror in right doses. Give a chance to "Thelma" and you may have a good surprise.

This was a decent adaptation. Surely not flawless and it did miss some of the magic of the original Disney cartoon movie however it was a worthy remake with many fine elements and actually it had some of the old magic. The most surprising fact was the performance of Will Smith who actually nailed it most of the times and really captured some of the charms Robin Williams gave the original. He was funny and well nuanced. A positive surprise and a really good performance by Smith. I wasn't too fond of Mena Massoud who looked the role but needed some more acting lessons. Naomi Scott was generally good and a perfect choice for the role of Jasmine. Not a fan at all of the casting of Marwan Kenzari who first of all was too young as Jafar and second really overacted the role in a bothering way. What I liked was that the movie reimagined some of the iconic scenes but also added some new moments or rather changed and modernised moments of the original. The production design and costumes were great. Guy Ritchie generally did a solid job. Overall, a fine movie with some flaws but definitely not the cheese fest I was expecting but rather an enjoyable adventure romance.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters
Members of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species-thought to be mere myths-rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity's very existence hanging in the balance. Once again Hollywood f**Ks up with Godzilla. The lack of a plot, predictable "surprises," and completely flat, unlikable characters makes this movie an unexploded dud. Oh, yes, there are monsters too, and enough special effects budget to feed and shelter a large city's homeless population for a year. However, the sight of them fighting is mostly dull and suspenseless. The biggest mistake this movie does is focusing on an estranged combat-scientist couple who vie for the attention of their plucky adolescent daughter. The movie makes you think that this is the most important thing going on against the backdrop of cataclysmic, extinction-level events threatening the human species. I was disappointed but not really surprised by how this movie turned out. If you love Godzilla, this is another movie in that series, so queue up. If you enjoy plot, suspense, character development, or even inventive onscreen action then watch the Japanese Godzilla movies instead.

Hard Times
Charles Bronson plays a poor drifter/loner, Chaney, during the Depression who travels by boxcar to New Orleans. He spies an illegal bare-knuckle fight in a warehouse and offers his fighting talents to a fast-talking gambler named Speed. Chaney proves himself a formidable and profitable fighter, but Speed can't hold on to money because of his gambling addiction and is in constant trouble with the mob. This was Walter Hill's 1975 directorial debut. One thing that's amazing is that Bronson was 53 years-old when the movie was made, yet physically looks better than most guys half that age. Bronson's beautiful wife, Jill Ireland, plays his love interest (as usual) and was 39 years old at the time. Although very little is revealed in the movie about Chaney's past, it becomes fairly certain that he has had a lot of experience with bare knuckle fighting. The viewer know this because he is supremely confident of his skills despite his age. Chaney is not big or ultra-muscular, but he's fearless, calmly self-controlled, doesn't bleed easy and expertly knows how to read other fighters. The cast are fantastic and many have said that portraying Chaney was Bronson's most fitting role. James Coburn is also brilliant as Chaney's promoter Speed. They have great chemistry together. Definitely a great movie to take a look at.

Georgy Girl

Georgy Girl
Georgina is a carefree and childlike 22-year-old who finds more joy in her relationships with children than with the adults in her life. Her parents' employer, James Leamington proposes marriage but Georgy avoids giving him an answer as the idea of romance confuses her. When Georgy finds herself the caretaker of a baby girl, she seeks to find a way to shoulder the new responsibility while maintaining her childlike innocence. A marvelous movie and an extension of the British kitchen-sink dramas from earlier in the decade (but with a friskier spirit) which introduced audiences to Vanessa Redgrave's kid sister, Lynn. She's Georgina, a too-tall, plain and frumpy, kiss-less clown, a nursery school teacher who plays second-fiddle to her more beautiful flat-mate and harbours a crush on her pal's sexy boyfriend in the bargain. Lynn Redgrave is nothing short of fabulous here; her "Georgy" is often slumped over sulking, an easy mark with little sense of humour - she's either completely inflexible or terribly over-eager. The script is so clever and enticing for everyone on-screen that the supporting characters tend to upstage Redgrave, but Lynn is a wonderful presence. Also excellent is Charlotte Rampling as pregnant Meredith (who gets the movie's most viciously funny lines), Alan Bates as her devilish lover, and James Mason as the older man who is the first to harbour a fancy for our heroine. A delightful bit of comedy-drama that is recommended.

The Man Upstairs
Peter Watson lives in a dingy London boarding house, plagued by guilt and slowly losing his mind. His anguished state was caused by a terrible accident that occurred while Watson was working as a scientist, an accident that resulted in the death of his fiancé's brother. Unable to escape his depression, Watson's condition worsens. After causing a disturbance one night, a fellow tenant calls the police on him, which further unbalances his already precarious mental state. An interesting "siege" movie from the late 50's. The story runs in "real time" and crucially the choice has been made to dispense with any musical soundtrack. The use of everyday sounds and noises becomes an important feature in the narrative and certainly ramps up the suspense. The other interesting aspect of the siege is that there are no hostages taken. Rather it's all about getting Watson to peaceably leave his room in a block of units and go quietly with authorities. Richard Attenborough gives a powerful performance as a lost soul. He is certainly not a lunatic. Though the supporting cast do well, they don't have a huge bearing on the main story, until arguably near the end where another resident becomes instrumental in drawing the siege to its conclusion. This movie is certainly worth a glance if you have a chance.

Jeepers Creepers 2

Jeepers Creepers 2
A school bus of a local high school who have won the championship are on their way back home. To their misfortune, the Creeper is one the loose as he is on the final day of his 23 days eating cycle, so this ruthless hunter will do whatever is necessary to find food before his time runs out. But the Creeper has another problem, he is being hunted down by Jack Taggart, the father of one of his victims who is looking for revenge. While it lacks the originality of the first one, this movie has a more focused and consistent plot due to the fact that the Creeper is now an identifiable villain. Director Victor Salva's new tale of rural horror is now a full-fledged supernatural horror in the vein of Wes Craven's Elm Street where typical elements of Americana become sources of horror. Having most of the movie set inside of the school bus with the cast's fears and personalities clashing makes a good source for classic suspense and tension between characters. The young cast are OK and the overall performance is not as poor as one could expect. However, they are nothing spectacular and some seem to had been chosen based more on looks rather than talent. This movie has a lot of what's good about modern horror movies, but sadly, it carries also some of the worst. The fast packed action at times gets distracting and contrasts badly with Salva's honest attempts to create suspense and atmosphere. It is fair to point out that the movie lacks the scares of the first one. It's still good fun and entertaining, but if scares are what you are looking, better look elsewhere.

You Were Never Really Here
When a teenage girl goes missing, a jaded, brutal enforcer attempts a rescue mission. He uncovers corruption and abuse of power along his way. This can best be described as a 21st century Taxi Driver with the visual style of something like Drive. The biggest selling point here is undoubtedly Joaquin Phoenix, who, as always, gives an electrifying performance that will keep your eyes glued to the screen for its relatively short runtime of 95 minutes. It is a shame then, that the pace still drags. Not because there is little happening, but because its anti-government message about post-traumatic stress (strange dreamlike flashbacks imply that he is an ex-soldier with a bad childhood) is just nothing new at this point. Its strength lies in the intoxicating visual flair, and that stellar lead performance. Although it is at its core a very violent movie, we only get to see the aftermath of what takes place, which makes the set-pieces feel a little uninvolving. Two or three unique and brilliantly done scenes aside, this will mostly be a matter of personal taste. Fans of Phoenix should definitely give it a go.

The Boys
Four youths are accused of robbing and murdering a nightwatchman. With the prospect of the death penalty being given should the boys be found guilty, the defence lawyer attempts to convince the jury to come to a charitable verdict. While the witnesses' evidence seems to prove their guilt, when the accused give their version of the night's events, an entirely different picture emerges. A fantastic courtroom drama in which the viewer is shown the same events two different ways, first by the witnesses and then the defendants, so that we don't know whether we're seeing the truth or not. Both versions are similar but the subtle differences are enormous in terms of whether they're innocent or guilty. The viewer is inclined to believe the defendants, at first, that all there is against them is circumstantial evidence but it actually turns out to be a rather large red herring though. Kids carrying knives gives the movie a bit of relevance for today especially in London where knife crime has gone through the roof. There's a great cast in this movie which includes Roy Kinnear, Wilfrid Brambell, Richard Todd and Robert Morley. A fascinating movie from an era in which capital punishment was still being dished out in the UK.

Noose for a Lady
This is a stylish British murder mystery that starts with a woman being convicted and sentenced for the murder of her husband. She has seven days until sentence is carried out. Then arrives a cousin from colonial Uganda who is determined to find the real killer. He goes to the quaint little English village she lives in and starts snooping. There's the worried step-daughter who teams up with him to examine the various suspects. It seems everyone in town had a motive and chance to kill the mean old man. The story ends with the now clichéd gathering of all the suspects and the statement, "Someone in this room is the killer." No major stars in this little Brit thriller but everyone is quite good. It's great fun and has a surprise ending. Well worth seeing if you have a chance.
