The Long Duel
In the India of the 1920's, British police officer Freddy Young strongly opposes his government's harsh treatment of local tribes. One of the tribe leaders, Sultan, resolves to deliver his people from their bondage. Although the British officers regard Sultan as a dangerous criminal, Young recognises him as a fellow idealist and an enemy to respect. Young's admiration for the tribal chief conflicts with his assignment to capture the rebel. This is a sort of British Western that doesn't take place in the U.S, has no native American characters or white guys with American accents but this movie is undoubtedly a western that has been relocated from the American plains to British run India. It is by no means rubbish but it is rather dull and overlong at times. The movie does contain some gun battles and fist fights so it's not exactly a total bore and one scene with a fugitive hiding down a well does contain some suspense. Most of the outside filming took place in Spain and not India. Yul Brynner as Sultan and Trevor Howard as Young are fine in their roles though some of the dialog is poor. There's also a ridiculous romantic interest between 54 year old Howard and 21 year old Charlotte Rampling. This movie works as a run-of-the-mill western but it's nothing spectacular.

Tomorrow at Ten
A young boy is kidnapped and placed in a room in a house somewhere in London with a ticking time bomb stuffed inside a toy gollywog which is set to go off the next day at 10am unless the kidnapper is given some money and a plane ticket to South America. A taut and fast paced thriller which doesn't waste any time with it's sparkling script and tight direction from Lance Comfort. The plot is tidy and unfussy and proceeds well towards its somewhat novel conclusion. Robert Shaw is excellent as the disturbed kidnapper, Marlow, and sterling support is provided by John Gregson as the police inspector. Nice cameo bit by William Hartnell as Robert Shaw's father. There's suspense in spades here, alongside plot twists you won't see coming. It's a pity that B-movie thrillers like this one are so little known as this sort of movie more than holds its own against modern fare. A worthwhile watch.

Make Me an Offer!
A boy called Charlie is enchanted with a green Wedgwood vase at the British Museum and grows up to become an antique dealer but his business isn't going quite so well until he hears about a room full of Wedgwood in a country mansion up for demolition and that a vase might be amongst the finds there. This quaint comedy is the story of an ordinary man who has an obsession through his life about something he saw in his childhood and is determined to get his hands on one. It's not a dramatic movie at all but a gentle comedy with interesting and likable characters who help him in his search. It has the flavour of an Ealing movie. Peter Finch is great as Charlie and he captures well the longing he has for the vase. He loves his wife and children but there is also this itch he can't get rid of until the vase is in his hands. Scottish redhead Adrienne Corri is stunning as the woman who will not sell the vase to Peter until she gets the right price for it. An entertaining movie that has a beguiling charm about it.

The Iron Petticoat
Captain Vinka Kovelenko defects from Russia, but not for political reasons. She defects because she feels discriminated against as a woman. Captain Chuck Lockwood gets the order to show her the bright side of capitalism, while she tries to convince him of the superority of communism. Naturaly, they fall in love, but there's still the KGB, which doesn't like the idea of having a defected Russian officer running around in London. This movie is by no means one of the classics in any sense: it's entertaining, occasionally very funny, but nothing spectacular. What's odd, and possibly most positive, about this Cold War comedy (written and produced at the height of tensions between the US and the USSR) is that there is no moralising or preaching. No propaganda. In the end, it's simply a romantic comedy about opposites attracting. Katharine Hepburn is great as Vinka - her trademark energy barely reined in, her Russian accent is a little OTT but passable. Bob Hope as Chuck Lockwood gets his typical wisecracking quips in. Supporting characters include James Robertson Justice and Sid James with more hair than usual. A bizarre, but interesting movie if you want to see Hepburn speaking in a Russian accent and examining a pushup bra with a look of utmost disdain on her face!!

Liam: As It Was
A brilliant documentary charting Liam Gallagher's comeback as a solo artist. It begins with the Paris gig in 2009 when Noel walked out on Oasis citing differences with Liam then goes on to the under appreciated years of the group Beady Eye which Liam thought might have been as big as Oasis but never came close and then his current solo career that has seen Liam getting his groove back. He is honest about the mistakes he's made in the past and he just seems a different chilled out man altogether from his wild days in Oasis. There are opinions about Liam from his current girlfriend, his mother and brother Paul along with former bandmate Bonehead. As an Oasis fan I loved it and I'm happy that Liam is back at his best again. Highly recommended.

Then Came You
A hypochondriac working as an airport baggage handler is forced to confront his fears when a British teenager with a terminal illness enlists him to help her carry out her eccentric bucket list. I only watched this as I liked Maisie Williams on Game of Thrones but this is such a cringy movie. The whole dying girl scenario has been done to death many times and this one tries to be different but ultimately fails. The script is incredibly cheesy and Maisie Williams tries too hard as a dying girl because she comes across as annoying instead. It's embarrassing to watch her act in this movie truth be told. The worst culprit of all and somebody viewers should know when they see his name down on the cast that it's gonna be a crap movie is Ken Jeong as a policeman. Ever since his breakout role in The Hangover he's been nothing short of bad and he's awful in this one too. The so-called comedy moments just aren't funny. It feels like the script was written by a novice. There have been far better movies with this subject matter than this one so do yourself a favour and skip it.

Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms
15 year-old Maquia is an Iolph – a loom-weaving humanoid species that never appears to age. Iolph are considered the Clan of the Separated, as their fate is to always become separated from their loved ones. In consequence, they are taught to never fall in love. Instead, they devote their days to weaving the fabric of life. Their “hibiol” tapestries hold the memory of the clan’s history, lest it be forgotten. When Maquia gets separated from the clan, she adopts a human baby, and the pair must navigate life in the human world. This anime movie had a good start to it but it went downhill quickly. I just didn't find the plot to be all that interesting and it goes on for too long and drags around the middle section. There’s lots of story going on, but the main theme seems to be motherhood: how it shapes women’s lives, and how the relationship between mother and child changes throughout the years. The animation is fantastic and the characters are very well drawn. I'm sure debutant director Mari Okada has a bright future in the industry but this movie just doesn't justify the high praise it's been given in some quarters.

Anna
Director Luc Besson revisits one of his earlier works here in an updated version of La Femme Nikita. The story is entertaining but there are too many time jumps which annoyed me. Thankfully I could still follow the story for the most part. Russian model Sasha Luss embodies confidence and female empowerment into the character of Anna, which gives the movie that feel good factor that the viewer wants to see. Not only is there action and suspense, but many unexpected moments of comedy particularly from Helen Mirren. It's a well done movie but in the end it's nothing you haven't seen before.

Peter, a young boy living in the fishing village of St Monans, Scotland during the 1940's, learns about life and the beauty of imagination from his grandfather and female teacher. This little known Scottish movie about a boy growing up in a small town on the East coast of Scotland is a bit of a strange movie as there's no plot as such in it. Peter lives in a bit of a dream world so many of the sequences are like a dream. The locations filmed are beautiful to look at but the movie itself did nothing for me. One or two scenes were fairly interesting but on the whole I can understand why this movie didn't do so well as it makes little sense after you've finished watching it. Might interest some people but the majority will quickly tire of this movie.

While on a flight from London to New York, a man plants a bomb in order to kill one of the passengers who murdered his young daughter in a hit and run accident 2 years previously. This is basically a disaster movie prototype, from before there were such things. It wasn't the first movie made about a flight in peril, but it was one of the first to feature a jet aircraft. This movie is chock-a-block with fine acting talent and the claustrophobic confines of the aircraft make for a good 'plot pressure cooker' that eventually brings things to a head. Richard Attenborough as the mad bomber angry at the world and Stanley Baker as the airplane captain are the standouts in the cast. Other familiar faces include a young Paul Eddington and Harry Secombe to bring a little touch of light relief to proceedings. All in all, this is a quality British thriller.

Conflict of Wings
Villagers in the Norfolk Broads oppose the RAF using their bird sanctuary called the Island of Children for missile target practice. This great movie portrays the people of the beautiful county of Norfolk as wildlife activists before their time. The fundamentally decent Air Force personnel are cast as the not very bad guys using an area frequented by nesting birds as a firing range. The movie makes its point quite gently with excellent performances in the British tradition and a wonderful cast. There are lot of shots of a bygone age of flying with Meteors and Swift planes in action. The scenery of Norfolk's beautiful northern coast and wetlands will enchant you.

Rappresaglia
Set during World War II, this movie charts the story of a good-natured Vatican priest who opposes an ideologically charged SS general hell-bent on killing more than 300 Roman hostages after a German squadron of 32 soldiers is killed by a bomb carried out by the Italian resistance. A fine ensemble cast headlines this worthy but rather dull WWII drama that tells of human conflict in Nazi-occupied Rome in 1944. The plot sounds like a powerful, intriguing story and it is, but I can't help wonder whether it would have worked better as a documentary. There's tension in the movie, but it's limited to brief interludes as we follow the resistance fighters planning to blow up the Nazi march. Unfortunately, in between these affecting moments are lengthy dialogue sequences between the Nazi officials, sequences which add little to the production. The climax showing the aftermath of the resistance attack – and the Nazis' ultimate revenge – is hard-hitting indeed. The casting is good; the producers assembled numerous heavyweights to play the Nazi officers, including Richard Burton, Peter Vaughan and Leo McKern. The movie would have been better if it had been a bit pacier and much of the talky sequences cut down.

Raid on Rommel
Alex Foster, a captain in the British navy, heads to the Libyan seaport of Tobruk during World War II. The city, which offers access to important trade routes, has been taken over by the Germans, and Foster goes undercover as a Nazi to reunite with British soldiers being held behind enemy lines and lead them to seize control of the port. When Foster discovers the soldiers are in fact sick POWs, he must find a way to lead the unhealthy men in a successful mission anyway. This fairly exciting low budget war movie contains high-powered action-packed shootouts, grand-scale explosions, thrills and lots of fun with scenes directly lifted from another movie "Tobruk". The movie has a development of a very simple and plain plot with plenty of nonsense situations, sticky events, absurd events and many other silly things. The main star in this movie is Richard Burton as Captain Foster who copies the actions of George Peppard to fit the footage of "Tobruk" into the action scenes of this movie. What's the point of watching this and "Tobruk" if the action scenes are the same? Still worth a watch as it is exciting and well acted.

Mosquito Squadron
RAF squadron leader David "Scotty" Scott is shot down over France and thought to be dead. His best friend, Quint Munroe, takes his place not only as leader but also in the arms of Scott's wife, Beth. Quint is to lead an attack on a Gestapo stronghold in Northern France, where French Resistance fighters and Allied soldiers are being held prisoner in a chateau. Soon Quint realizes that Scotty is alive and being held in his bombing target. At a time when many a star-studded and big-budgeted WWII actioner emerged, this modest effort seemed definitely like second-tier material – offering customary but efficient thrills and decent spectacle. It unfortunately also borrowed stock footage from two other movies most notably from '633 Squadron'. Sure, its weak on characterisation, clichéd in its plot, with wooden acting and stereotype Germans but you don't watch a B-movie for characterisation, intricate plotting, great dialogue and so on. Rather, you just watch it for escapism and a bit of boys-own adventure fun. The final attack on the German held chateau in France is rather good. A movie to watch on a wet Sunday afternoon.

Two young kids from Dorset run away from home to go to London to see Queen Elizabeth's coronation. An utterly charming movie full of youthful bluster and eccentric adults. It is very much of its time, it harks back to a time when kids were safe on the streets, people were only too glad to help and you could drink water from the local stream! In essence it's a road movie, one that is powered by two kids who by hook or by crook, want to see the Queen get crowned. The plot shows how these two young kids use initiative and naivety to get to their destination, how they affect everyone who comes into contact with them, and finally how such an historical event brought about a joy and community spirit that is sadly all too lacking in today's modern British society. The child actors are very likable plus you get to see Sid James at his grumpy best and Peter Sellers in a small role as a policeman. There's footage of the actual coronation procession itself and the crowning inside Westminster Abbey. A true spirit lifting movie and a beacon of unadulterated joy for the child in all of us. A very enjoyable movie.
