Wind Chill
Just before their university campus goes quiet for the winter break, a young woman asks a classmate for a lift home. The two students set off on their trip and begin to get to know each other. But, when a reckless motorist drives them off the road, they find themselves stranded in the snow on a remote highway. As the night grows colder, the two are confronted by a horde of menacing apparitions and struggle to escape with their lives. The trailer gave me an impression that I was in for a thrill ride of scares and twists or at least psychological terror. And in that regard the start of the movie does deliver on what is promised. Until the scene where the car goes off the road and the main characters get stranded in the middle of nowhere. What should have been the start of a chilling experience becomes a dull and unimaginative chain of small events. The biggest problem with this movie is that there was no real threat or dread present. The characters have a lot of opportunities to leave the car and walk back to the civilised world. But they never do. They are not restricted by anything other than the cold. Without real danger and creepiness this movie is never scary. It's a shame the two leads who do well in their roles weren't presented with a better script. Wind Chill had the potential to be compelling and terrifying but for some reason the director went down another road and missed an opportunity. You won't miss anything by skipping it.

Red State
A trio of horny teenage boys are lured by the prospect of some sex with an older woman. Once they get there, they are drugged and wake up trapped in a Christian cult compound and are treated to some hate spiel by sermon and some unpleasantness on orders by the cult leader. Director Kevin Smith breaks away from his comedic roots to direct and write this religious/political/bigot baiter that lurches from Hostel type madness into a siege of the damned. This is an infuriating movie in many ways, but it is never dull and it always remains challenging. The tone of the movie shifts constantly between satire, horror and thriller. It's a shame the ending is very anti-climatic. The cast perform well with John Goodman and Michael Parks as the cult leader amongst the standouts. Regular Kevin Smith fans might not like this movie which mirrors the Waco siege of 1993 but I enjoyed it even if it's different from his usual comedy.

Defense of the Realm
Nick Mullen is an inquisitive newspaper reporter who stumbles across a sensitive story involving the cover-up murder of a school boy. The lad's death is hushed up by government authorities and involves a prominent cabinet official. The lad on the run from the police trespassed onto an American air base and into the flight landing path of a fighter jet carrying nuclear weapons. With a mouthwatering cast featuring Gabriel Byrne, Denholm Elliott, Fulton Mackay, David Calder, Ian Bannen, Greta Sacchi and Robbie Coltrane, this movie promises a lot and more or less delivers. Set in a newsroom against the backdrop of political scandal and cover-ups, this movie keeps you watching and keeps you guessing. It is a shame that the ending is a bit of a let-down, coming far too abruptly and leaving the viewer cheated of a really tight finale. But it is a minor grumble, and although this movie is far from a classic there is much to recommend it.

The Night Has Eyes
Two teachers, man-hungry Doris and restrained Marian, visit the Yorkshire moors a year after friend Evelyn disappeared there. On a stormy night, they take refuge in the isolated cottage of Stephen, one-time pianist shellshocked in the Spanish Civil War. Doris leaves as soon as the flood subsides; but Marian's suspicions about Evelyn's fate, in conflict with her growing love for Stephen, prompt her to stay on among the misty bogs. This is really an Old Dark House movie - the women come upon the house when its all dark and shadowy, and you can feel the danger lurking in every shadow. I loved how this movie took twist after twist and spun off in new directions that kept you guessing as to what may have happened to the friend and what may happen to the two women. Director Arliss builds the suspense very slowly, dangling snippets of information that teases the audience as to what might be going on in this shadowy house. James Mason in one of his early roles is here honing the brooding lead man act that would serve him so well in his career. Overall it's a pretty good, atmospheric movie with some nice performances.

Rogue
An adulterous husband plots to bump off his invalid wife with the help of his mistress. All goes according to plan, until a dogged detective shows up and threatens his exposure. This British B movie will remind viewers of the American detective Columbo because the British detective in this movie called Inspector Walker is somewhat of a maverick like him and he even says "just one more thing" as well though he doesn't hassle and irritate the suspect as much!! Perhaps this movie was the inspiration for the character? Elwyn Brook-Jones is brilliant as Walker who knows who the murderer is but doesn't have anything concrete to nail his man. Derek Bond is the man who murders his wife and thinks he has everything under control right until the last minute of this movie. A very watchable murder mystery.

Hour of Decision
An American journalist tries to solve the mystery of an unpleasant columnist's murder as his own wife is the chief suspect. This is a fairly routine though watchable whodunit about the womanising habits of a gossip columnist who gets murdered. The best thing this production has going for it are the cast members which includes Hammer starlet Hazel Court, as winsome as ever as the journalist's beautiful wife. Anthony Dawson is the snide murder victim. Dad's Army star Arthur Lowe pops up in a cameo, and Lionel Jeffries bags a largish role too with an awful accent. The mystery is solved in the end with an Agatha Christie type re-enactment with all the suspects in a room.

Retreat
On an isolated island, a couple's attempt to recover from a personal tragedy is shattered when a stranger washes ashore and brings news of an airborne disease sweeping through Europe. This movie is similar to Dead Calm with a stranger intruding on a couple trying to come to terms with and moving on after the wife suffers a miscarriage. The trio of Cillian Murphy, Thandie Newton and Jamie Bell are impressive with Bell performing well as an alpha male that goes on to challenge Murphy's manhood right before his wife. Is Bell's character telling the truth about a deadly disease outside? That is what the couple must try to find out. With a good part of the plot carried out within the confines of the cottage, director Carl Tibbetts succeeds in holding on to the viewer's attention despite the fact that single locale movies can become boring. The tension ramps up a lot during the final third as the truth finally comes out. The ending was disappointing to say the least but on the whole I liked this movie.

Miss Robin Hood
An eccentric Englishwoman asks a writer who has a weekly adventure story in the newspaper The Teenager called Miss Robin Hood to help her retrieve a stolen family recipe for Honey-Cup ale from a rival brewery. This pleasing comedy for the whole family has a great double act in Margaret Rutherford and Richard Hearne as Miss Honey and Mr Wrigley. Throughout the movie, Miss Honey and Mr Wrigley battle big business and the management at the newspaper. They fight for what they believe in and making money is not one of them. Subtle little things, like Miss Honey's charm with her pigeons, constantly remind the viewer of the pure ideals of a child and how they are superior to the views of the world of an adult. Catch Reg Varney and Kenneth Connor in early roles before they became famous on the British comedy scene. Other cast members who have smallish roles include Dora Bryan, Sid James and James Robertson Justice. This is a movie that leaves you with a smile on your face after the ending. Great stuff.

The Man Who Loved Redheads
Mark St. Neots has a passionate relationship with redheaded Sylvia in his youth. As he ages, he continues to remember his first love very fondly, to the point of idealising her. When Mark, now a married, middle-aged diplomat, meets Daphne, a redhead just like Sylvia, he becomes fascinated with her. Soon Mark starts chasing and having affairs with different women, all of whom have striking red hair. This movie started brightly but steadily grew worse as it went on. The majority of the movie is poor as the beautiful Moira Shearer puts on embarrassing accents as both a 'working class' woman, and then a Russian. John Justin is wooden as Mark St. Neots and they do not seem to have any chemistry at all, and to add to the pitiful first half the long ballet sequence goes on for too long at 15 mins. It felt they dragged the movie out with this sequence alone. This movie which is supposed to be a comedy is pretty unfunny and not worth bothering with.

Doublecross
A Cornish poacher is paid to sail 3 international spies across to France but when he discovers that once he has set them ashore they plan to kill him, he changes course without their knowledge. A pleasant if unremarkable time-waster with a short running time so that it doesn't outstay it's welcome. It has a good cast with future Dr Who William Hartnell playing a man who usually has a run-in with the wily Cornish poachers. Donald Houston is great as the poacher who turns the table on the spies and dumps them somewhere along the South Coast and not in France. There's a surprisingly brutal fight at the climax between Houston and the baddies plus he gets the girl at the end. Although it's not a brilliant movie, it has a nice balance of humour and mild suspense.

In Time
In a future where time is money and the wealthy can live forever, Will Salas is a poor man who rarely has more than a day's worth of life on his time clock. When he saves Henry Hamilto from time thieves, Will receives the gift of a century. However, such a large transaction attracts the attention of the authorities, and when Will is falsely accused of murder, he must go on the run, taking the daughter of an incredibly wealthy man with him. The concept of this movie is extremely unique and innovative. However, it was disappointing to see this fall short of my expectations. It pains me to say this but Justin Timberlake should not have been chosen for the role of Will Salas. He just can't pull off the character of a tough guy from the ghetto. Amanda Seyfried is decent as Silvia, but she and Timberlake don't have much chemistry. I also don't think the script was very well written, which causes Timberlake and Seyfried to be even less believable as their characters. A great idea on paper but poorly executed on film.

Inferno
Rose Elliot, a young poet in Rome, is murdered after she reads a Latin book that tells the supernatural story of the Three Mothers. Her brother Mark investigates her murder and, after his friend Sara is killed, heads for New York. This is Dario Argento's 2nd movie in a trilogy after Suspiria which concludes with The Mother Of Tears that came out in 2007. The plot in this movie is a bit of a muddled mess in the Three Mothers mystery and it plays like a series of scenes, and not much more. One does not lead sensibly into another in the way we commonly associate with a "plot". The characters are one dimensional, give ordinary performances. However, the imaginative kills that take place is fantastic. With all that said I really enjoyed this. It's a joy to behold. It's pure Argento; the set pieces, the framing of the scenes, the gruesome but beautiful violence, and the pure suspense of what will happen. Very enjoyable and I'm looking forward to seeing the final part of this trilogy.

Bleach: Burîchu
Ichigo Kurosaki is a 15-year-old high school student who lives in Karakura Town with his father, Isshin, and younger twin sisters, Karin and Yuzu. He also has the ability to see ghosts, a talent that attracts the attention of a katana-wielding young woman in a black kimono. She introduces herself as Rukia Kuchiki while explaining to Ichigo that she is a Soul Reaper who guides the dead to the Soul Society. When Rukia is badly injured in a battle against a Hollow, she transfers her powers to Ichigo. Based on the manga and long running anime that finished in 2012, this is the live action movie and it's not too bad. I am only familiar with the franchise by its name, as I haven't read the manga nor have I watched any of the anime. The storyline was good and quite straight forward. It required very little attention from the audience actually to stay up to speed with the movie. Perhaps it was a little bit too simplistic and streamlined. I liked the majority of the characters and the filmmakers put together a good ensemble cast to portray them. The CGI in the movie was actually quite good and the Hollow designs were great. The action scenes were decent. All in all, watching the movie hasn't made me have the urge to watch the anime at all but I did enjoy it. Not sure what fans of the anime will think about this movie though?

Mazinger Z: Infinity (2017)
Ten years after the end of the war against Dr. Hell and his Mechanical Beasts, the world lives in an era of peace thanks to the development of photonic energy for peaceful purposes. An enormous robot is found buried beneath Mount Fuji which is codenamed Infinity. It is stolen by Dr. Hell and his new mechanical beasts along with his henchmen Baron Ashura and Count Brocken. Dr. Hell plans to use the Infinity to unleash Goragon - to exchange this universe with another as he believes this world is not worth existing. Mazinger was a 70's anime that was never seen in the UK although it has been shown in many countries around the world. Not being familiar with the characters or the mecha itself does not detract from the viewer's enjoyment of this movie. I cannot say if this movie retains the tone and action of the series but I thought the action scenes were fantastic. I'm sure fans of the original series will enjoy the nostalgia of revisiting old friends again. The animation is slick with a 3D feel to it. The storyline moves at a good pace, never slacks and builds to a satisfying conclusion. It certainly delivers on action and spectacle. Fans of Japanese giant robots should have a fun time watching it.

Laplace
An environmental analyst is asked by the police to determine if two deaths by hydrogen sulfide poisoning are an accident - or a murder. But when he meets a young woman at both sites, a scientific mystery begins. A bit of a miss by prolific Japanese director Takashi Miike. It tries to be a supernatural mystery but fails and the biggest disappointment from this movie is it's long, plodding and boring. While the slow pace of the story is meant to emphasise the dramatic effect, the end result is the exact opposite. Add all these factors together and the result is that this movie is a sure cure for insomnia. Takashi Miike is one of the most inventive directors today and his career is full of hits and misses. He has had more hits, but this movie is a definite miss.

No Highway in the Sky
Theodore Honey is a mathematician charged with discovering what caused the crash of a British made "Reindeer" airliner. As he travels to investigate, he realises en route that he's flying on the very same type of airplane. Convinced it will suffer a similar accident, he deliberately sabotages it once it lands, and soon finds himself defending his sanity. Fortunately, a sympathetic actress and a stewardess come to his defense. A great movie with a highly original idea, script and a top-notch cast. The first half of the movie is quite gripping, centering on passengers aboard an airplane that may or may not be doomed to crash. It's so suspenseful that the movie's talky second half drags in places and is a bit of a let-down. Two romantic subplots fizzle out and the story turns into a fairly dry parable about a "detached" scientist's need to connect more directly with the people in his life. The trouble is, this conflict isn't very original and always seems more theoretical than dramatically compelling. James Stewart, Marlene Dietrich, and Glynis Johns all shine in their roles. While it may not be one of Stewart's best known movies, it's certainly well worth taking a look.

Lost in London
Woody Harrelson has to get through a wild and illicit night in London and take his family to the Harry Potter set to prove he's not a deadbeat dad. Filmed in one continous take, this is a semi-true retelling of events of a night that spirals out of his control and lands Woody in prison, leaving him with some serious questions to ponder about himself, his friendships, and the direction of his life. I applaud the technical achievements of attempting a movie like this but overall I didn't like it one bit. I didn't think it was amusing and found the acting and dialogue wooden. It was just plain stupid and very dull.
