Academic overachievers Amy and Molly thought keeping their noses to the grindstone gave them a leg up on their high school peers. But on the eve of graduation, the best friends suddenly realise that they may have missed out on the special moments of their teenage years. Determined to make up for lost time, the girls decide to cram four years of not-to-be missed fun into one night - a chaotic adventure that no amount of book smarts could prepare them for. This movie has been compared to Superbad and I see the resemblance. This movie does so many things right and there's a lot to like about it. The well-written comedy and jokes hit the right note, the really stellar directing from Olivia Wilde should be noteworthy as this is her directional debut, and of course the main characters portrayed amazingly by Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein who have brilliant chemistry together which just makes the emotional punches of this movie that much more effective. Billie Lourd was hilarious as the crazy girl Gigi. The only thing I wasn't keen on was the soundtrack. A couple of songs were fine but the majority was terrible. I would suggest to anyone of any age who wants to see a feel good, funny, well acted and well written movie to check it out now!

Toy Story 4
Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the rest of the gang embark on a road trip with Bonnie and a new toy named Forky. The adventurous journey turns into an unexpected reunion as Woody's slight detour leads him to his long-lost friend Bo Peep. As Woody and Bo discuss the old days, they soon start to realise that they're worlds apart when it comes to what they want from life as a toy. I thought that a 4th installment in this franchise would be a mistake considering how perfect Toy Story 3 ended but now, after watching this movie I'm glad they decided to make this movie. Who cares if some things have been rehashed from the other 3 movies and may be repetitive to some viewers. I don't blame Pixar for sticking to the same tried and tested formula as it's worked before and it works for this movie too. The whole gang is back to bask in that gloriously animated sun, with a plethora of new memorable characters joining in on the fun with some valuable life lessons thrown in on their journey. It's a joy to watch these colourful rag-tag bunch of characters interact with their even more vibrant worlds and from carnivals, playgrounds, kindergarten rooms and an antique shop. The movie has an imaginative treasure trove of sight gags, witty dialogue and personality beats that culminate to make a highly entertaining all-ages affair that will have adults and children laughing. Toy Story 4 is another impressive feat of film-making by Pixar and one that's sure to charm fans of old and newcomers alike.

Men in Black: International

Men in Black: International
The Men in Black have expanded to cover the globe but so have the villains of the universe. To keep everyone safe, decorated Agent H and determined rookie M join forces - an unlikely pairing that just might work. When aliens that can take the form of any human arrive on Earth, H and M embark on a globe-trotting adventure to save the agency and ultimately the world from their mischievous plans. I was hoping that this MIB reboot was going to be a wild ride like the original trilogy in that it would be both hilarious and interesting but it didn't turn out to be the case. I have to say that I was quite disappointed. The visuals were really good and the fact that they showed even more different aliens that the viewer haven't seen before was really nice. But the story is just not as good as you think it is going to be, you can expect and piece everything together half an hour before the characters themselves do. I did like the pairing of Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson as H & M though. I think this movie suffered because the genius behind the original trilogy in Barry Sonnenfeld wasn't the director. If you are looking for a fun action adventure then you can watch this because it does have some good action scenes and some of the jokes are pretty funny but it's not a patch on the previous movies.

Criminal
CIA agent Bill Pope dies while traveling to a secret location to meet a hacker who can launch missiles at will. Desperate to find his whereabouts, officials turn to an experimental neurosurgeon who can transfer memories from one brain to another. The guinea pig for the procedure is Jerico Stewart, a violent and dangerous death-row inmate. Now gifted with Pope's skills and knowledge, Stewart must race against time to stop a sinister international conspiracy. Remember the 1997 movie 'Face/Off' with Nicolas Cage & John Travolta? This is kind of like that, but one-sided, what with one of them being dead, both minds go into one body. The start of the movie is very intense and really pulls in your interest, with a selection of plots being introduced and I felt they all connected quite nicely at the end. The action sequences provide nothing new or inventive to the genre, but they are well done and they always feel like a payoff for decent storytelling. The primary issue I had with Criminal is the middle section, which becomes very lacklustre and slow, and to be honest is a bit boring. The cast is great and Kevin Costner is particularly impressive as Jericho when he has to deal with his own thoughts and Pope's as well. Gal Gadot also performs well alongside Costner. All in all, Criminal has clever ideas and is worth watching but it won't win any awards despite it being a decent crack at the action movie genre.

He Got Game
Released for a week from prison in a shady deal in which he has to convince his son to sign with a particular university, the father of a basketball prodigy struggles to reconnect with his teenage children. While basketball is a prominent theme and the movie opens with majestic shots of various kids poetically playing the game, this is less a sports movie and more a study of estranged relationships with Denzel Washington and Ray Allen having close to equal screen time as father and son respectfully. Allen is nowhere near as polished an actor as Washington, but he has a nicely complex character, torn between offers from various universities, the wishes of his girlfriend, a desire to take responsibility for his sister and lots of resentment towards his father. The movie runs a little long with a subplot involving a hooker next door that could have been omitted completely; the ending is also a tad too maudlin for its own good. The vast majority of the movie tugs on the right emotional strings though and together with some awesome music and excellent camera-work, this is a compelling watch regardless of one's interest in the sport of basketball.

Vacancy
When David and Amy's car breaks down, they have little choice but to spend the night at a remote hotel. The couple entertain themselves by watching low-budget slasher movies on TV until they realise that the horrifying images they see were recorded in the room in which they are staying. With hidden cameras capturing their every move, David and Amy must find a way out before they become the latest stars in a snuff film. Vacancy is very much a mixed bag as far as horror movies go. On the plus side, it doesn't resort to using teenage actors which makes a big different. The atmosphere is excellent and the pacing is top notch. There's never too much going on, but never a lag either. The movie does transition well from suspense to calm to suspense again in just the way every thriller does. Also Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale turn in solid performances. However, it uses every single horror clichรฉ going. Now to the director's credit, some are done quite well, but that doesn't excuse the fact that most are tired and overdone as it is. I don't think the ending works that well either. The movie showed promise, but as you soon realise, it's nothing much other than a rehash of familiar plots and situations.

Thunderbirds Are GO
International Rescue are sent as security for the first manned flight to Mars and foil super villain The Hood who has sabotaged the space craft once before. The ship successfully lands on Mars. But later, as the astronauts try to return to Earth, they encounter grave technical difficulties, and the Tracy Brothers must fly into space to save them. This was the movie spin-off for Gerry Anderson's hugely popular puppet TV series. It successfully captures the magic of the show and is as exciting adventure as you could wish for. What is good about Thunderbirds is that Gerry Anderson didn't pander to kids in any way, instead he told adult story lines that just so happen to have puppets instead of actors on the screen. The cameos by Bob Monkhouse and Cliff Richard help to make this a lively experience, and the globetrotting storyline is as explosive and action-packed as you'd like. Fans of the original Thunderbirds series will enjoy this movie.

The Game

The Game
A wealthy investment banker, Nicholas Van Orton, is given a mysterious birthday present by his brother Conrad. When he participates in this game, unusual events happen that interfere with his daily routine, endangering his life. The closer he gets to figuring out the master behind the game, the more dangerous the events get, making him become closer to death. He must risk everything he has to discover the deadly secret. This is a fantastic movie by director David Fincher. This thriller successfully holds suspense the whole way through. The incidents displayed throughout the movie are shown in a sequence that continually makes us wonder what is happening, and the rapid change in events keeps us watching. There is a wide range of occurrences happening throughout the movie, which only make sense at the end of the story, so once we have seen a few of the experiences that Nicholas must go through, we are dragged into the movie, continually wondering who is good, who is bad, and how the events all link together. Michael Douglas gives a superb performance as Nicholas Van Orton. Anybody who likes mystery stories, thrills and suspense will love this movie.

The Funhouse
Four hormone-driven teens sneak into a funhouse at a traveling carnival, and plan to stay the night. Little do they know, it harbours a deformed sex-crazed maniac. Now, they've seen too much, and must find a way out, before the monster and his father find them...to dole out their own brand of carny justice. On the surface this movie seems like just another "mental defective/weirdo/lunatic" goes on a killing spree. Those were hardly rare in the 80's. But it's put together well with stylish direction and ample amounts of suspense. The cast is decent with Elizabeth Berridge doing a fine job as the Final Girl. The main flaws with the movie are the pacing in the first hour and the overall familiarity of the material. Still, it's worth a look if you like 80's horror.

The Secret Life of Pets 2 (2019)
Max the terrier must cope with some major life changes when his owner gets married and has a baby. When the family takes a trip to the countryside, nervous Max has numerous run-ins with canine-intolerant cows, hostile foxes and a scary turkey. Luckily for Max, he soon catches a break when he meets Rooster, a gruff farm dog who tries to cure the lovable pooch of his neuroses. While not entirely necessary, this sequel is pleasantly entertaining. The first one isn't an animated classic by any means, but it was a decent effort from Illumination. This movie features more of the same amusing pet gags with a passable, if unspectacular, story. It's not super original, but it's lighthearted and contains a decent message. Families should enjoy it nearly as much as the first.

During a life-threatening rescue mission in space, Jean Grey is hit by a cosmic force that transforms her into one of the most powerful mutants of all. Wrestling with this increasingly unstable power as well as her own personal demons, Jean spirals out of control, tearing the X-Men family apart and threatening to destroy the very fabric of our planet. I'm not sure why this movie has been panned by the critics as it's quite enjoyable. There's plenty of action scenes. It's very forward-moving in its storytelling, it doesn't slack once so you won't get bored, this movie hits the ground running right from the opening scene. For a movie about a female with almost limitless super powers, it's definitely a lot better than Captain Marvel for me. A lot has been said about Sophie Turner's performance as Jean Grey but I thought she was great in the role. If you like any of the previous X-Men movies you're going to want to see this one. Great fun.

This highly-touted movie about Elton John that blends the biopic and musical genres together has one big selling point: Taron Egerton's go-for-broke performance as the deeply troubled musical genius. Regrettably, the movie as a whole is self-indulgent and cliche-ridden to the hilt and goes down as a misfire. It doesn't start well with John visiting a psychiatric support group and telling his life story. It's a movie whose tone is dumbfounding, annoying and at times embarrassing to endure. The musical numbers in this movie are mostly perplexing and very rarely effective in conveying this life story. While I don't question the movie's accuracy in portraying how awful Elton John's personal demons were, a movie with more discipline almost definitely could have done better. A campy movie, one that keeps poking you in the eye with how bad it is, will not tell anyone's story all that well, let alone a legend like Elton John. The only good thing about it is Taron Egerton's portrayal of John. Disappointing.

Resident Evil: Retribution
As Umbrella Corp.'s deadly T-virus continues to turn the world's population into legions of flesh-eating zombies, Alice, the human race's last hope, awakes deep within Umbrella's secret operations facility. The further she delves into the complex, the more of her mysterious past is unveiled. Her global hunt for those responsible for the outbreak leads to a mind-blowing revelation; Aided by friends old and new, Alice fights to escape from a world on the edge of oblivion. This is the 5th movie in the Resident Evil franchise and this one delivers the same thing it's good at: mindless action scenes. There is hardly a storyline here. It directly takes place where the last movie left off with Alice captured by the Umbrella Corporation once again. Action fans will love this movie as it is full of such scenes. You won't have time to take a breath before the next action sequence begins. The fight choreography is good and the 3D enlivens the scenes. That's probably the shining spot of the whole movie. This movie is strictly for fans of the series and for those who love long action sequences filled with blood. Period. Anyone expecting a storyline or strong performances should stay away from this movie.

The Last Flight of Noah
An American pilot gets more than he bargained for as he agrees to fly a strait laced evangelist, an assorted bunch of farm animals and two young stowaways on a mission to the South Pacific in a B-29 plane. This amusing Disney movie packs fun situations, easygoing characters, emotions, humour and features impressive flying sequences with a Boeing B-29 Super Fortress. A good cast which includes a sympathetic turn by Elliott Gould as a pilot who must try and find a way off a deserted island following the crash landing and Genevieve Bujold who holds her own admirably. There's also two likable kids playing orphans in Ricky Schroder and Tammy Lauren and 2 Japanese actors who play soldiers still thinking that WWII is raging. The island location is beautiful. Overall it's an enjoyable family movie.

Perfect Skin
A young Polish woman is kidnapped by a mysterious tattoo artist and held in an underground cell. There is an interesting little indie movie with great cinematography and a good performance by Richard Brake as a tattoo artist looking to create his perfect work of art. It certainly is not boring. The movie though has all the depth of a porn movie and is edited at times with the quick cuts used in music videos, an attempt to be stylish that doesn't always work. There is zero depth to the characters and no real development. For a thriller, there was no suspense. The gore, which appears to be done the old fashioned way, without CGI is great. Worth a watch though for Brake and the transformation of the lead actress, along with how beautifully it is shot, it just needed more of a story.

JCVD stars as a policeman in France who finds out that he had a twin brother that he never knew who has been murdered. Wanting to dive more into the mystery of his brother's death, he travels to New York and takes his brother's place in hope of some answers. But he gets a lot more than he hoped for because Russian thugs are trying to kill him. This movie is actually not that bad by Van Damme standards. It's one of his more entertaining ones. The action scenes are fast and brutally realistic and Van Damme does manage to generate empathy for his character. However, Natasha Henstridge steals the show. She is such a gorgeous creature that one can become transfixed watching her on the screen. She is truly a beauty and this movie is worth watching just to see her on screen!
