Psyche 59
The wife of a wealthy businessman is suffering from 'hysterical blindness' after a mysterious fall. When the wife's younger sister comes to live with her after a failed attempt at marriage, years-old tensions between the sister and her brother-in-law rise to the surface. A strange, almost hypnotic type of movie, Psyche 59 aims to be a thriller but just misses the mark of being great. The set up is intriguing, the twists risqué and the photography suitably moody. Patricia Neal gives a fine performance as the afflicted blind woman, both physically and emotionally, Samantha Eggar is super sultry and raises the temperatures considerably, while both Ian Bannen and Curt Jurgens are fine. Unfortunately the pay off in the climax is hopelessly weak, the whole build up holds the attention, you sense we are heading for great dramatic denouement, but sadly that's not the case. Still worthwhile for fans of psychological melodramas verging on soap opera.

Tears for Simon
An 18 month baby boy is snatched in his pram whilst his young nanny has gone inside a chemist for 2 mins. The police start an investigation while the child's distraught parents hunt for him on their own. This is a great movie mainly for 2 reasons - first for the cameos you get from many future British TV stars such as Barbara Windsor, Thora Hird, Joan Hickson and Joan Sims. Secondly the colour photography show glorious London at it's best during the mid 50's with many classic transport buses and cars shown. The story is quite absorbing, although a little uneven with many red herrings thrown in to keep you guessing right to the end. You do feel for the parents whose hope grows with every new lead that crops up but the sadness etched on their faces when it comes to nothing breaks your heart. In the end this is a well made and suspenseful thriller which I really enjoyed.

Lunch Hour
A beautiful former female art student starts a new job at a wallpaper and textile company. A married man there becomes infatuated with her and they begin having a relationship that doesn't go anywhere far as people always start interrupting them. He decides to book a hotel room for their lunch hour in order to have their privacy and this is where things go pear shaped as his lies to the manageress makes the woman become slightly unhinged. It's hard to say whether the way the story unfolds is an elaborate set up by the woman to have some fun by pretending to become crazy or she is genuinely nuts and imagining how desperate her life would be married to the man? The gorgeous Shirley Anne Field is brilliant as the woman and it's easy to see why men would fall for her. Robert Stephens is also good as the naive man who destroys his relationship with the woman by threading a small lie that ultimately grows into a monster. The location shots of London at the turn of the 60's is also impressive. Overall, this is an interesting little movie to watch.

Montparnasse Bienvenüe
Paula Simonian is a 31 year old woman who is dumped by her boyfriend and left to fend for herself on the streets of Paris. By lying to a woman she meets on the metro that she's an old friend of hers from school, she manages to get a job as a baby sitter and also a sideline selling lingerie in a shop. This is a nice debut movie from director Leonor Serraille with a great performance from Letitia Dosch as Paula. The viewer watches her emerge from her lowest ebb to slowly regaining her mojo. It's hard not to sympathise with Paula's plight as she's estranged from her parents and she must do what she can to earn money for herself. Granted not much character development takes place but it doesn't really matter. At the end of the day, this movie is about independence and making something for yourself, whether it be building relationships, repairing them or knowing when to cut them off. You're not going to get anything new from the story but it's still a delight to watch.

The Snorkel (1958)
An underrated and sadly seldom seen movie from Hammer Studios. After the mother of a teenage girl dies in what is seen as a suicide at her home, Candy is determined to prove that the stepfather Decker killed her and thus begins a dangerous game of cat and mouse between the two. From the opening scene of this fantastic movie, the viewer knows how the killer does his work...but then watches to see if his teenage stepdaughter can find out. Blaming someone for murder is one thing, but finding solid proof is something else entirely. The suspense is cranked up throughout the movie as we know Decker wants to kill Candy off but when will he get his chance to do the terrible deed. Peter Van Eck is truly excellent as the cold-blooded stepfather Decker with Mandy Miller also performing admirably as the likable, cute and effective Candy. The movie builds to an extremely tense scenario capped off by not one but two highly satisfying resolutions. This is a real treat for Hammer fans and another feather in their cap that they could do something different and well apart from just classic horror.

You Must Be Joking!
One of the early movies that Michael Winner directed and probably his best. A motley group of soldiers have their initiative tested in a scavenger hunt set by an army psychologist. They are instructed to obtain six symbols of the British way of life. The reward for the winner is to be fast-tracked for promotion and a ten-day, all-expenses-paid trip around the world for two. This is a cracking comedy from start to finish with some brilliant scenes involving a huge cast of British favourites. Everyone performs well, and they look like they had a whale of a time making this movie. The script has some humorous dialog and some slapstick. Top of the bill is the wonderful Terry Thomas along with Lionel Jeffries as a kilted Scotsman who steals every scene he's in, Bernard Cribbins, Denholm Elliott and Wilfred Hyde-White. The funniest character for myself was Annabelle Nash played by Gabriella Licudi who helps an American soldier in his quest. Her driving skills are atrocious and it's a laugh seeing the chaos she creates whilst on the roads. To anyone who enjoys fun-filled, brisk British comedies, this is worth checking out.

The Running Man
A bitter airline pilot fakes his own death and gets his wife to collect the money. They escape to Malaga in Spain after committing a perfect crime. But, of course, there's always the dogged investigator to make things difficult. A fair to middling thriller but one that really needed a Hitchcock or at least a director who knew how to mould the somewhat far-fetched material into something more plausible than this. The first 15 to 20 minutes seemed a good set-up for a premise that sounds exciting and suspenseful. Then suddenly Laurence Harvey is walking around with dyed blonde hair and a terrible Aussie accent and the film goes downhill from there before picking up again near the climax. The story tends to sag in the middle where nothing really happens. There should have been more suspense between the scheming couple and the insurance investigator. Laurence Harvey tends to overact here and Lee Remick is beautiful and does OK with the material. It's not a bad movie but it could've been better.

Spaceship
A girl fakes her own alien abduction and disappears, leaving her father to search for her in a strange teenage world of unicorns and black holes. I'm not really sure what I watched here but it was absolutely awful. I'm taking it's meant to be an insight into the world of teen culture but I just found it a confusing mish-mash of psychedelic claptrap by the director. Maybe Alex Taylor wanted his audience to embrace the strange and weirdness that's taking place. That's all fine if it leads to something good for the viewer but it doesn't. There's certainly not much of a plot in the movie. The cast are forced to speak terrible dialogue. They're basically just talking gibberish half the time. Teenagers though might be able to empathise with the characters? So in the end, this is one of the worst movies I've ever had the misfortune to watch. A right abomination!

Double Bunk
Ian Carmichael and Janette Scott are newlyweds who fed up with the cost of rent, purchase a houseboat. The houseboat is the typical junk sold to gullible newlyweds and the pair immediately run afoul of the man with the biggest yacht. With the help of his pal Sid James, and without the consent of his wife, Carmichael repairs the boat's engine and along with Liz Frazer sets off for a honeymoon cruise on the river which goes wrong when they end up in France with no fuel for the trip back home. This is a fun movie which gets better as it goes along. There is some slapstick and since Liz Frazer plays a stripper, a little titillation but not much. Sid James plays a character we've seen him play so many times, the wise cracking friend not always up to complete good. Ian Carmichael is his usual calamity self - the nice guy who ends up suffering when one accident after another befalls him, more often than not down to something that his character has done. This movie is basically one of those 60's comedies which is driven by the cast delivering the sort of characters and humour which they were known for. I enjoyed it and if you like this sort of comedy you'll be entertained too.

Nomads
A French anthropologist moves to Los Angeles and is followed by the evil spirits of an extinct tribe he once uncovered. Just before he dies in hospital, he transfers his memories to the mind of a female doctor and through her the viewer sees what happened to him. This is an eerie as well as supernatural chiller about a society of malevolent ghosts set in Los Angeles and dealing with a mysterious anthropologist well performed by Pierce Brosnan (in his 1st leading movie role) and the woman doctor finely acted by Lesley-Anne Down. The movie packs gruesome images, grisly killings as well as providing plenty of suspense, continuous flashbacks and nightmares, chills and plot twists. Don't come into the movie expecting answers as to who these spiritual Nomads are as you won't get it here. It's up to your own interpretation as to what is going on. The final scene is quite surprising. All in all, this may not appeal to everybody but if you're after what some have called 'a thinking man's horror' you might take something out of it.

Emergency
When a little girl is knocked down by a truck on the road, the race is on to find people that have the same rare blood type as her. The way you see the accident taking place the girl should have been killed instantly so it's quite surprising that she's still alive. Possible donors include a convicted criminal awaiting his execution, a footballer and a scientist on the run from the police. Only the scientist who is selling secrets storyline is vaguely interesting if I'm being honest. It's a fairly routine thriller in which some car chases are added to liven things up but in the end it's all fairly predictable. Glynn Houston does his best with the script as the detective charged with finding the 3 donors. In the end, the movie passes the time but it's not memorable or special.

Jazz Boat

Jazz Boat
Anthony Newley is Bert, a young electrician who gets mixed up with a gang of hoodlums who steal some jewellery from a shop. The mix of comedy, drama and music doesn't gel well together and whoever gave useless comedian Bernie Winters a role in this movie made a big mistake. His presence and tiring comedy routine gets irritating quite quickly. The second half of the movie is mostly a chase as Bert and his friend The Jinx are on the run from the hoodlums and along with a police inspector find themselves on the Jazz Boat. There are some musical numbers belted out from some unknown French crooner and Newley himself. The one highlight from this movie is the gorgeous Anne Aubrey who sizzles on screen. It's a fairly good timepiece of the era as 3 years later this whole jazz scene would be swept aside by the beat groups and a certain 4 piece band from Liverpool!

A blazing car crashes over a cliff. No body is found. It belonged to a co-owner of a business. Both owners had recently taken out large insurance policies. The insurance company is naturally suspicious and send an agent to investigate. This is a great little British thriller with a subtle comic flavour to allow it to stand out from the rest. Although it has the same low budget, ensemble cast feel as many other films from Butcher's Film Studios, it's the wry understated humour which centres around the central character's miserliness which makes it special. The storyline is rather familiar, but the Brighton locations and occasional shots of the wonderful Seven Sisters cliffs give it an edge. The dependable Peter Vaughan is excellent as the insurance agent who succeeds in solving the crime where the police have failed. Overall this movie is a well-made, well-written, well-acted low budget movie which deserves to be seen.

The Browning Version
In a British school, the conservative and emotionless Latin teacher Andrew Crocker-Harris has a heart problem and is forced to retire. His unfaithful wife Millie is having a love affair with his colleague, the science teacher Frank Hunter, and he is hated and despised by the students, fellows and the direction of the school. His pupil Taplow is studying with him the tragic Greek poem The Agamemnon, expecting to be promoted at school. On his last days at school, Crocker-Harris is informed by the headmaster that the board refused to pay his pension plan for earlier retirement and he realises that he is a failure as a teacher and a man. This is a brilliant movie based on a Terence Rattigan play. Michael Redgrave is simply superb as the downtrodden schoolmaster Crocker-Harris and the depth of his portrayal is astounding. His acting skills makes it easy to empathise with the character's status as a man beaten down so much by his failures in life that the only thing he has left is his academic brilliance and just maybe a sliver of self dignity that he's trying so hard to hang onto. I dare you not to cheer or shed a tear when he finally speaks at his final farewell speech to the students. The ending of this movie is all about acting. You don't have to yell and scream and show a lot of emotion to get a point across on film. You just have to do what this guy does....be humble...and honest. Absolutely incredible. It's worth watching this movie just for that speech alone. Highly recommended.
