Coin Locker Girl
Abandoned by god knows who, Il-young's journey in life begins as a wailing infant trapped inside a subway coin locker. Seven years later she's lifted by a shady opportunist who sells her to a seedy loan shark madam in Chinatown. A decade on and she's part of the madam's 'family', and has become rather effective at collecting debts. But the gruff and tomboyish Il-young discovers another side of herself when she meets a young man saddled with his father's debt. Feeling empathy for the first time, she crosses her matriarch, whose reaction is swift and brutal. This is such a great Korean movie. It's dark, bloody and stylish with 2 excellent actresses in the leading roles in Kim Hye-su and Kim Go-eun. The story doesn't deliver anything new to the gangster/revenge pantheon of Korean cinema. A loyal foot soldier disobeys a boss when romance wafts into the air, is severely punished and then seeks revenge. Sound familiar? You could say it bears a passing resemblance to A Bittersweet Life which came out in 2005. This is a fast-paced movie dotted with violence, yet it feels heavy and methodical because you'll realise that it will be consistently dark and despairing until the end. Overall it's a movie that grips from start to finish. Seek it out.

The Girl in the Spider
Anyone familiar with the franchise will know the tone and premise of these movies. This movie does feel like a departure from the tone and feel of the originals and that may or may not be a good thing, depending on how invested you are in the written material. There is far less of the feminism which permeates the first 3 movies, this may be a reflection of current mood and also the fact that its just not sensible to have a main character who hates and targets men, when the audience is predominately male. The story is about a nuclear weapons controller which is stolen by a gang of thugs, headed up by a criminal mastermind. This could not be any more of a Bond movie if it tried. Lisabeth Salander basically does what Bond does - silly stunts, gadgets, sleeps with women but discards them, wins unbelievable fist fights and can jump from tall buildings and land with barely a scratch. If you enjoy the Bond movies you will likely enjoy this, it has a similar style and level of action. Its nowhere near as dark as the original trilogy although there is a brief episode of gore. Claire Foy was decent enough as the lead though I still prefer those that came before her in Noomi Rapace and Rooney Mara. This movie certainly wont satisfy the die hard Salander fans who want to see the same story about bad men being bad to women all over again getting their comeuppance.

Suspiria
This is a remake of Dario Argento's 1977 horror classic. I'm afraid I have to say it's not very good and kind of dissapointing. It goes on for way too long, 2 and a half hours and not very much is happening. The original had wonderful colours, a superb soundtrack, great gore and was nice and tight, and didn't go on forever. This new interpretation lacks everything that made the original a classic. Gone are the vibrant colour and memorable soundtrack. Instead we get a movie that gets tedious over time. I had to check my clock to see how much more time I had to waste on this. At least the last half an hour is well worth it. I think you could easily get rid of an hour of material, and you would have a better movie in the end. Stick to the original - it's far better than this.

The Gay Dog
This isn't a movie about a homosexual dog in case you're wondering!! It's a low budget comedy about the patriach of the Gay family played by Wilfred Pickles who finds himself enmeshed in a plot involving greyhound racing and the usual shenanigans surrounding the betting community. It isn't that particularly funny but of particular interest to British comedy fans will be the cast which includes singer Petula Clark who belts out a number during the movie, Peter Butterworth and Jon Pertwee. The duo are probably the best thing in the movie even though their parts are small. Too much of the screen time is made up of a dull love triangle featuring Petula Clark and John Blythe. Don't expect too much out of this movie.

Twilight Women
This is a one-time hard hitting social drama looking at the plight of young, unmarried pregnant women in the early 1950's. The setting is a kind of boarding house owned by Freda Jackson in a typically hard and villainous performance; her role is to help the young women in her care to give birth before selling the unwanted children on for adoption. The movie covers mental illness, poverty, and crime, and was considered so hard-hitting in its day that it was the first British movie to be awarded an 'X' certificate'. Nowadays it all feels rather tame, of course, although as a piece of social drama it's still interesting from a historical perspective. The engaging cast includes a youthful Lois Maxwell (Moneypenny from the 007 movies) alongside the always interesting Laurence Harvey and Dora Bryan.

Storm Over Tibet
This is a mildly entertaining movie about a pilot that goes missing over the Himalayas whilst shipping supplies between India and China. His wife and best friend who embark on a romance together travel to Tibet to see whether he's alive or dead. A lot of the movie is stock footage of travellers, mountaineers in Tibet and Buddhist rituals from an unfinished movie added with stuff shot in a studio. I wouldn't say this is a particularly good movie and a lot of it is boring but the stock footage shown of the Himalayas in interesting enough. A pity the actual story itself is dull.

Treasure Island
This is a European-made version of the classic Robert Louis Stevenson novel mostly watchable thanks to a good performance from Orson Welles as Long John Silver. The main problem isn't his overacting, which is fine, but rather the fact that he's dubbed in some of his scenes, which is a real travesty. The rest is a nice little production that utilises some nicely exotic Italian/Spanish locations and a seasoned cast of Euro genre actors. It may be no classic and can't really be considered the definitive version of the story, but it's worth a look regardless.

A Scanner Darkly (2006)
In the near future, as America virtually loses the war on drugs, Robert Arctor, a narcotics cop in Orange County, California becomes an addict to a drug called Substance D when he goes undercover. The way this movie has been filmed using a technique called rotoscoping will either be a revelation to you or become a distraction. It will keep your attention that's for sure. Storywise, though, the number one task here is a very clear anti-drug message that is hammered in repeatedly accompanied by a handful of character studies with some chilling comments of a bleak not-so-distant future... and alas, not terribly much more. So, all in all this movie may have a tantalising concept and idea, yes, but it's an idea waiting and begging to be fleshed out properly. The best out of the cast is probably Robert Downey Jr's amusing performance. You might like this movie if you go in with lower expectations than I did.

Glass
This movie from M. Night Shyamalan has been highly praised from cinemagoers but I fail to see how they've come to this conclusion as it's not that good. I wasn't expecting a DC or a Marvel Superhero movie but this is a rubbish excuse in the genre. It's the last in a trilogy which had Unbreakable and Split before it. It's a poor conclusion to the trilogy if I'm being honest. Shyamalan's script and direction is at his laziest, the plot is boring, it lacks any thrills or suspense and characters are written to be stupid. The one positive thing about the movie is the opening act which was exciting and the acting by James McAvoy who is as good as he was in Split playing 23 different characters. The twist in the end was just flat out boring and disappointing. In conclusion even the opening act, ensemble cast and music score was not enough to save the movie.

Mary Queen of Scots

Mary Queen of Scots
I'm not sure where to begin with this dreadful movie. Think of this as the last King Arthur and Robin Hood movies and you can see where it's heading. It's historically inaccurate for starters and there would have been no black or asian people in both Mary or Elizabeth's court at the time. It's obvious that director Josie Rourke was ticking as many PC boxes as she could in making this movie. Both Margot Robbie and Saoirse Ronan are badly miscast. A Scottish Queen with an Irish accent is laughable but had the filmmakers been doing their homework they would have found that having lived in France, Mary came back to Scotland with a distinctly French accent. Margot Robbie in appearance, voice, and acting is not convincing as Queen Elizabeth I. I can now understand why this movie has tanked so badly at the box office. The only good thing about this movie is the locations and the costumes. Even though the 1971 version with Glenda Jackson and Vanessa Redgrave isn't accurate, it is far much more interesting and better acted than this drivel. Steer well clear of this crap.

Anne of the Indies
Female sea pirate Captain Anne Providence takes a Frenchman onboard as one of her crew not knowing that he's on a mission for the British in order to retrieve his own ship. While the movie is not a particularly outstanding example of its type, Jacques Tourneur’s energetic direction and Franz Waxman’s grandiose score ensure a good effort that moves along at a brisk pace though it is a bit cheesy at times. Jean Peters actually does a passable job as a pirate captain and does decent work in her sword fights. James Robertson Justice dons a poor Scottish accent as her right hand man though Thomas Gomez looks the part as the legendary Blackbeard. I thought the ending was rather weak and even disappointing. It's still a decent pirate movie that is worth taking a look.

River Beat
Dan Barker is a police inspector working the "River Beat" in London, watching for smugglers. He becomes attracted to a woman who he sees working on a ship that's just docked. Unfortunately the woman is duped into bringing cigarettes back to shore to a mysterious man and is stopped by customs officers who inspect the packets and find smuggled diamonds inside them. Barker doesn't believe that she's involved in the operation and in the process she helps them track the real suspects. This movie stands out from the rest of the crime genre of that time because of the river setting which was unique - that of the Thames in London. The story initially is slow but once it gets going it turns out to be a very tense and suspenseful crime drama. There is a tense climax in which stars John Bentley and Hollywood actress Phyllis Kirk go after the two receivers of the smuggled diamonds which ends with a boat chase on the Thames. The acting is, on the whole, very competent all round even though there is nobody who really stands out and sets the screen alight. I loved the cinematography of the whole London Docklands area. For those that enjoy 50's UK crime drama - give it a go.

The Last Man to Hang?

The Last Man to Hang?
Sir Roderick Strood is arrested at London City airport accused of murdering his wife. As Strood prepares to go on trial, he recounts to his lawyer what took place. Will the jury send him to the gallows or acquit him? This movie is built of three parts – the preparation for the trial, the trial itself, and then the deliberations and verdict reached by the jury. The first part sees the accumulation of a significant amount of circumstantial evidence not helped by the damaging fact that Strood was conducting an extramarital affair with a singer and building up a lot of ill-will from his wife’s vindictive maid. The second part has the defence and the prosecution stating their case with the final part with the jury deliberating all the evidence before passing judgement. I found it quite an interesting little movie and I didn't expect a major twist right at the end. Quite an impressive movie and one to check out if you manage to get hold of it.
