A Boy, a Girl and a Bike (1949)
Young couple Sue and Sam are members of a Yorkshire cycling club, the โ€˜Wakeford Wheelersโ€™. Romantic complications ensue when wealthy David becomes smitten with Sue, and joins the club to pursue her, much to Sam's dismay. Meanwhile, a bike is stolen from a long-time member with the local bike shop respraying it and selling it on to David. This little-known regional comedy gem not only boasts a fine cast who are all given excellent opportunities in a fascinating script, but takes its characters firmly out of doors to explore the picturesque Yorkshire countryside and to showcase such places as Hebden Bridge. A further bonus is the presence of Honor Blackman and Diana Dors, both of whom are not only attractive in looks and personality, but act with pleasing assurance and total conviction. The script is well- paced and deftly directed, guaranteed to grab your attention from start to finish. Whether you're interested in cycling or not, I found this movie to be a delight.

Happy Death Day 2U
This is the sequel to the horror comedy Happy Death Day which is recapped at the beginning in which college student Tree Gelbman is stuck in some kind of groundhog day time loop and restarts each day by being killed by a person wearing a baby face mask. In this movie the viewer discovers the cause of the time loop and also alternative realities are thrown in. It is just as good as the first movie but there is more emphasis on the comedy than horror this time round - not that there's anything wrong with that. Jessica Rothe is adorable as Tree and you genuinely feel for the character. The acting from the rest of the cast is pretty good as well. Judging from the mid-credits scene, it's highly likely there's going to be a third movie made. Overall it's an all round good fun movie.

Alita: Battle Angel
Hollywood adaptations of Japanese anime have on the whole been pretty poor over the years until now that is. This time they get it right. James Cameron and Robert Rodriquez have done a stunning job on bringing this to the big screen. The original anime has been one of my favourites for a long time. It's been made exactly as I would have liked it to be and it seems to me that Cameron/Rodriquez studied the original properly and did the absolute best they could to bring the spirit of what made the anime such a classic to life. Rosa Salazar is incredible as Alita and she looks exactly like her anime counterpart. The pacing of the movie is just right in order to build up the characters and draw you in. The action sequences are breathtaking. This is one of those movies that deserves a sequel. Thank you James Cameron and Robert Rodriquez for delivering a near perfect sci-fi movie that I thoroughly enjoyed. Don't miss out on it.

Gintama 2: Rules Are Meant To Be Broken
I enjoyed the first live-action Gintama movie. The mix of surreal comedy and action scenes made it a fun experience for myself. I didn't seem to get that with the sequel. It goes for way too long and the jokes are far more miss than hit. I felt the filmmakers were trying too hard this time round with the humour. The first half of the movie fares very well with the comedy as Gintama and his 2 friends have to find work to pay the rent which leads to a ridiculous but hilarious scene in a hostess club but what a shame that the plot focuses too much on the power struggle within the shogunate police force during the second half as I found that fairly dull. Some of the parodies on show are extremely good to watch such as Neon Genesis Evangelion and My Neighbour Totoro. There's also a funny part in which 2 otaku factions (those who love idols and anime girls) square off in a studio after a discussion. All of the main cast return for the sequel with Shun Oguri once more taking the lead role. I'm sure those that have watched the Gintama anime over the years will lap this movie up but unfortunately it just didn't do it for me this time.

The Medusa Touch
This is the fantastic story of a middle age English man tormented by a terrifying revelation that he is responsible for the the world's disasters. Richard Burton gives an impressive performance as writer John Morlar, who is brutally attacked at his home and left for dead. Trouble is, his mind refuses to die. Convinced, from a young age, Morlar believes he has had the power to cause personal as well as world catastrophes. To prove his point, he snares a fully-loaded flying 747 jumbo jet and causes it to crash into a high rise apartment building, killing hundreds. The case is investigated by French Inspector Brunel (superbly played by Lino Ventura) who is convinced that Morlar's personal psychiatrist, Doctor Zonfeld (Lee Remick in one of her finest roles), is harbouring a horrifying secret which eventually engulfs them both. The movie is brilliant, combining the attributes of in your seat suspense and visual scenes which are further enhanced by a haunting musical score. The disaster which unfolds at the end is gripping stuff. A great movie to watch.

This is a rare Japanese exploitation movie about a group of young women whose job is to dive for oysters off the coast of Japan. The women are preyed upon by their perverted boss who takes advantage of them one by one. This movie is a typical example of the output that movie studio Nikkatsu produced in the 70's. There's no plot at all, it's just an excuse for the filmmakers to show women being sexually abused by men and although they protest at their treatment at first they give in to their advances in the end. In this day and age, this type of movie is definitely not acceptable.

Gallipoli (1981)
Archy and Frank are two young Australian sprinters who want to join the army to fulfill their sense of duty. Turned down because they are too young, the pair hop a freight train to Perth, where they are allowed to join up. They board a troop ship headed to Cairo and, after training in the shadows of the Great Pyramids, the boys are finally sent to the front line, where their speed makes them candidates for messengers in one of the war's bloodiest battles. A terrific movie that so succinctly sums up the passion and the innocence of the Australian soldiers as they gave their lives up for a cause not their own, believing to the end that duty demanded that they make a good showing of themselves. This story is based in historical fact and is still discussed today as one of the most terrible follies foisted upon young men by totally incompetent military leaders. There are even worse stories that are told about the wars outcome in France and Belgium but this film captures enough of the tragedy to drive home the point of how mad all wars are. A young Mel Gibson is very convincing as are the entire cast. Peter Weir crafted a heart wrenching movie which ends with a moment that you just can not shake from your mind. Great movie and very moving.

The Card
In Edwardian Staffordshire, charming rogue Edward "Denry" Machin, the son of a washerwoman, believes he must give destiny a hand to rise in the world. Starting early in his youth, Denry maneuvers to get into a top public school. Later, by outwitting his employer, he becomes a rent collector, and eventually Mayor. This is another superb British comedy of the early 50's with a fun story and a brilliant script. The black and white photography is truly beautiful, and captures the sense of time, place and atmosphere better than any amount of glossy colour could have. It was wonderful to see somewhere close to my neck of the woods in the seaside resort of Llandudno being used for filming. Alec Guinness gives yet another cracking performance in the lead ably supported by Glynis Johns and Petula Clark in one of her first adult roles (and no singing by her for a change!). Overall, this movie is a total delight.

The Fiction-Makers
This is a 2 part story for The Saint TV series which has been edited together to make a movie. The story is right out of a Bond movie. A crazed criminal, known only as Warlock has taken ideas from a series of spy novels and used them as an instruction manual for his entire criminal organisation. Warlock kidnaps Simon Templar, believing him to be the author known as Amos Klein, and Joyce Darling, the real novelist. Warlock wants Klein to "write" a plan to rob a heavily guarded bank vault. The movie comes across as something of a mix of James Bond and a heist movie both very popular in the 60's. Roger Moore is great but is generally upstaged by 2 of his co-stars in Kenneth J. Warren and Sylvia Syms. Warren's crazed Warlock is a treat โ€“ threatening and funny all at the same time. He appears to be having a blast with the role. The plot moves at a good pace. The witty writing is also a winner. Warlock, his gang known as S.W.O.R.D. and the almost religious-like adherence to the books Warlock bases his organisation on might be a bit silly, but it is fun. I really enjoyed this caper and if you were a fan of The Saint series you're bound to like it too.

Coin Locker Girl
Abandoned by god knows who, Il-young's journey in life begins as a wailing infant trapped inside a subway coin locker. Seven years later she's lifted by a shady opportunist who sells her to a seedy loan shark madam in Chinatown. A decade on and she's part of the madam's 'family', and has become rather effective at collecting debts. But the gruff and tomboyish Il-young discovers another side of herself when she meets a young man saddled with his father's debt. Feeling empathy for the first time, she crosses her matriarch, whose reaction is swift and brutal. This is such a great Korean movie. It's dark, bloody and stylish with 2 excellent actresses in the leading roles in Kim Hye-su and Kim Go-eun. The story doesn't deliver anything new to the gangster/revenge pantheon of Korean cinema. A loyal foot soldier disobeys a boss when romance wafts into the air, is severely punished and then seeks revenge. Sound familiar? You could say it bears a passing resemblance to A Bittersweet Life which came out in 2005. This is a fast-paced movie dotted with violence, yet it feels heavy and methodical because you'll realise that it will be consistently dark and despairing until the end. Overall it's a movie that grips from start to finish. Seek it out.

The Girl in the Spider
Anyone familiar with the franchise will know the tone and premise of these movies. This movie does feel like a departure from the tone and feel of the originals and that may or may not be a good thing, depending on how invested you are in the written material. There is far less of the feminism which permeates the first 3 movies, this may be a reflection of current mood and also the fact that its just not sensible to have a main character who hates and targets men, when the audience is predominately male. The story is about a nuclear weapons controller which is stolen by a gang of thugs, headed up by a criminal mastermind. This could not be any more of a Bond movie if it tried. Lisabeth Salander basically does what Bond does - silly stunts, gadgets, sleeps with women but discards them, wins unbelievable fist fights and can jump from tall buildings and land with barely a scratch. If you enjoy the Bond movies you will likely enjoy this, it has a similar style and level of action. Its nowhere near as dark as the original trilogy although there is a brief episode of gore. Claire Foy was decent enough as the lead though I still prefer those that came before her in Noomi Rapace and Rooney Mara. This movie certainly wont satisfy the die hard Salander fans who want to see the same story about bad men being bad to women all over again getting their comeuppance.

This is a remake of Dario Argento's 1977 horror classic. I'm afraid I have to say it's not very good and kind of dissapointing. It goes on for way too long, 2 and a half hours and not very much is happening. The original had wonderful colours, a superb soundtrack, great gore and was nice and tight, and didn't go on forever. This new interpretation lacks everything that made the original a classic. Gone are the vibrant colour and memorable soundtrack. Instead we get a movie that gets tedious over time. I had to check my clock to see how much more time I had to waste on this. At least the last half an hour is well worth it. I think you could easily get rid of an hour of material, and you would have a better movie in the end. Stick to the original - it's far better than this.

The Gay Dog
This isn't a movie about a homosexual dog in case you're wondering!! It's a low budget comedy about the patriach of the Gay family played by Wilfred Pickles who finds himself enmeshed in a plot involving greyhound racing and the usual shenanigans surrounding the betting community. It isn't that particularly funny but of particular interest to British comedy fans will be the cast which includes singer Petula Clark who belts out a number during the movie, Peter Butterworth and Jon Pertwee. The duo are probably the best thing in the movie even though their parts are small. Too much of the screen time is made up of a dull love triangle featuring Petula Clark and John Blythe. Don't expect too much out of this movie.

Twilight Women
This is a one-time hard hitting social drama looking at the plight of young, unmarried pregnant women in the early 1950's. The setting is a kind of boarding house owned by Freda Jackson in a typically hard and villainous performance; her role is to help the young women in her care to give birth before selling the unwanted children on for adoption. The movie covers mental illness, poverty, and crime, and was considered so hard-hitting in its day that it was the first British movie to be awarded an 'X' certificate'. Nowadays it all feels rather tame, of course, although as a piece of social drama it's still interesting from a historical perspective. The engaging cast includes a youthful Lois Maxwell (Moneypenny from the 007 movies) alongside the always interesting Laurence Harvey and Dora Bryan.
