In the Doghouse
A delightful comedy about an accident prone newly qualified vet who buys a run down practice only to discover that his ex-classmate has also bought a swank new vet surgery in order to compete against him. It's a typical British pre-Carry On movie with a charming, sympathetic and kind-hearted performance by Leslie Philips. Nice to see him play these kind of roles instead of the usual rogue-ish womaniser that he was typecasted a lot. The plot is mostly about Phillips' dealings with the customers at his practice which includes a beautiful young woman who has a stage act with a young chimpanzee named Rosie and his ex-classmate's dastardly plan to sell horses for meat to France. There's a host of familiar faces on parade which includes the great Hattie Jacques, Joan Hickson, Patsy Rowlands and Fenella Fielding. All in all, this is a solid early 60's comedy with plenty of laughter and a little dose of sadness as well. Very enjoyable.

Mega Time Squad (2018)
A small-town crook finds an ancient Chinese time-travelling device that can help him pull off a heist and start a new life, but he may not survive the consequences of tampering with time. This movie's got a solid concept that has a lot of fun with itself. Overlapping scenarios get a bit deep at moments but the outcome is well worth the trip. The effects are middle of the road but the performances work and add a welcome layer of laughter to the concept. A comedic take on Looper and what happens when too much of a good thing isn't that good for you. So depending on how serious you'll take the whole thing, the fun you will have (or not) will vary.

Pet Sematary
Dr. Louis Creed and his wife, Rachel, relocate from Boston to rural Maine with their two young children. The couple soon discover a mysterious burial ground hidden deep in the woods near their new home. When tragedy strikes, Louis turns to his neighbour Judd Crandall, setting off a perilous chain reaction that unleashes an unspeakable evil with horrific consequences. Suspenseful and creepy, Pet Sematary is a worthy adaptation of Stephen King's novel and is considerably better made than the dated 1989 original, which is not saying too much. Despite some cheap jump scares, there are still some solid moments of fear and foreboding horror emanating through the story thanks in part to some of the liberties taken with the source material. The acting can also be considered an improvement, especially from Jason Clarke as Louis and Jetรฉ Laurence as his daughter Ellie. It surpassed my expectations and I enjoyed it immensely.

The Mule
This movie directed and starring Clint Eastwood, has a great story. Eastwood plays 90 year old Earl, who becomes a mule for a drug cartel, driving and delivering large quantities of cocaine. He begins this job to earn enough money to pay for his family member's expenses, so that he can win their trust again. Later on, he decides to continue with it because the drug cartel bosses and members also seem to respect and like him. If this proves to be Clint Eastwood's last movie then he's gone out on a high as this is brilliant. Don't come into this expecting bad ass Clint to kick some holy hell out of some punk or two because it's not that type of movie. It's more of a slow burner and Clint is far from being a bad ass in this story. His performance though is top notch but it's not just him that does well here. Bradley Cooper is also great as the DEA agent who is after a big drugs bust to go up the ladder in his profession. The movie might be methodically paced and at times some of the plot elements seem too non-believable but overall, I found the movie to be very suspenseful and I remained highly interested into how this was all going to turn out. It's well worth checking out this movie from a veteran director at the top of his game.

Accompanied by her husband, son and daughter, Adelaide Wilson returns to the beachfront home where she grew up as a child. Haunted by a traumatic experience from the past, Adelaide grows increasingly concerned that something bad is going to happen. Her worst fears soon become a reality when four masked strangers descend upon the house, forcing the Wilsons into a fight for survival. When the masks come off, the family is horrified to learn that each attacker takes the appearance of one of them. Jordan Peele has lately been heralded as the suspense master of our era after the successful 'Get Out' which was a smart, timely and immensely entertaining suspense thriller. Unfortunately, after viewing this movie, I'm sad to say that I have to hold off on my enthusiasm. While all the elements that Jordan Peele likes to implement are there (strong performances, good build up sequences, dark humour), the weak storyline inevitably fails to hold the movie together. I really wanted to like this movie and I am willing to stretch my suspense of disbelief a lot more than normal for some movies, but even so, this one lost my interest half way through and I found myself no longer rooting for it's characters. As long as you're not expecting a movie as good as 'Get Out' you might enjoy this one.

Day the World Ended
A poor monster movie directed by Roger Corman. In a house in a small valley, a man and his daughter are shielded from the radiation that has ravished the Earth. Some other people join them to escape the danger but in the woods nearby something is eating radioactive rabbits. A deadly horned monster!! This movie has one of the silliest looking creatures of the sci-fi craze of the 1950's. It looks pathetic and it's strangely scared of rain! The story is dreary; the plot is very weak and has clearly been filmed on a low budget as was often the case in those days. Mike Connors and Richard Denning brought some life to the movie, but even they could not lift this movie into the category where you could say you liked it a little bit. Stay away from this clunker.

Behind the Curve
An interesting documentary about the community of people that believe the Earth isn't a globe but is totally flat and we're all living inside a massive dome!! The key virtue of this movie is showing flat-earthers as fairly normal people going about their daily life. Sure, we also get briefly to see a stereotypical conspiracy nut screaming absurd rants into a webcam or practising weird habits like juggling pingpong balls with sledge hammers while reciting the periodic table. But those are not the characters carrying the documentary. Rather we follow a couple of close friends, that seem fairly normal and likable apart from their weird theories. It would be so easy to vilify flat earthers, having scientific authorities point out their fallacies and blaming their ignorance. In fact their theory about the Earth being flat is shattered by an experiment they do right at the climax of the documentary. Take a look if you want to hear alternative views on science.

The Black Rose
Following the 13th-century death of his nobleman father, Walter of Gurnie and his confidant, Tristram, join a caravan led by the North African Bayan en route to China. Along the way, the beautiful Maryam, known as the Black Rose, begs Walter to take her to England with him. When the warlord Bayan reveals his intention to invade and subjugate China's advanced society, the trio attempt their escape back to England. This is a good adventure with plenty of emotions, action and romance. The exciting plot blends far eastern adventures and medieval scenario. Tyrone Power and Jack Hawkins are firmly teamed, they make a first-class duo as the adventurer friends. Orson Welles along with other fine actors such as James Robertson Justice take part in this movie. Director Henry Hathaway keeps things going at a fair old pace so that it never falters or gets boring. A grand medieval tale of high adventure and romance that should keep you entertained.

Incident In A Ghostland
A mother of two who inherits a house is confronted with murderous intruders on the first night in their new home and fights for her daughters' lives. Sixteen years later when the daughters reunite at the house, things get really strange. This movie started out really well but it went kinda weird and I had no idea what was going on if I'm being honest. It's acted fairly well by the main cast but the constant screaming gets on your nerves after a while. The title is pretty deceiving - if you're expecting a ghost story, you'll be let down like I was. I've liked Pascal Laugier's previous works such as Martyrs and A l'interieur but this one is a big misfire. Lots of people have praised this movie but I can't really understand why that is the case. Don't take my word on this movie. Give it a whirl yourself and see what you think.

Sing Street
This movie tells the story of a young kid who is looking for an escape from all his troubles at home where his family is on the verge of falling apart, and at his new school where students and teachers are quite rough. His window of opportunity arrives when, in an attempt to impress a girl, he invites her to star in his band's music videos despite not being a part of one. A beautifully balanced, sensibly narrated and splendidly performed story covering the highs and lows of teenage life while demonstrating the magic of creating music with all the romance of the art. It's a nod to the carefree and joyous days of growing up with it's catchy songs. The movie delivers an experience that's delightfully captivating. It packs just the right amount of heart, fun, nostalgia, heartaches and optimism and also benefits from the interesting set of characters the writer-director brings to life. The young cast are excellent. Sing Street is a superb feel-good movie and one I can recommend to everybody.

Shazam!
14-year-old Billy Batson is an orphan boy who keeps running away from foster homes. When he gets adopted by a couple who share a home with many foster kids, Billy is soon granted magical, wizard powers, and discovers that when he says the wizard's name, Shazam, he turns into an adult male with super-hero like abilities. A brilliant DCEU movie with a superb performance by Zachary Levi as Shazam who brings this movie the energy, charm, and humour it needs. He plays the role of a teenage boy stuck in a man's body not only well, but eerily convincingly so. The script is strong as it balances humour and drama, horror and light-heartedness, and character and spectacle better than any DCEU movie so far. The movie is a character piece more than a super-hero movie, though. The story isn't about a boy who turns into an adult super-hero battling evil, it's about a boy learning to grow up and accept the things he's ignored his whole life. I loved this movie. Everybody here knocked it out of the park. It has heart and humour and a great message. Definitely one to watch.

The Third Murder
Well-known attorney Shigemori takes on the defense of murder-robbery suspect Misumi, who served jail time for another murder 30 years ago. Shigemori's chances of winning the case seem low, as his client freely admits his guilt, even though he faces the death penalty if convicted. But as he digs deeper into the case, hearing the testimonies of the victim's family and Misumi himself, Shigemori begins to doubt whether his client is actually the murderer. With this movie, acclaimed film maker Hirukazo Kore-eda takes a different path from many of his previous works. He is known for his delicate and subtle dramas about the family life of ordinary people. This time, he has made a sort of courtroom drama (although only a small part is actually set in a courtroom) about a killer and his possible motives. Still, the theme of family relations is not absent in this movie. Far from it, in fact. One of the most important characteristics of the killer is how he has failed as a father. The lawyer defending him discusses the case with his own father, a retired judge who has convicted the same killer decades earlier. And the dead victim turns out to have been the worst father imaginable. In the end, this is a multi-layered, complex movie which offers lots of surprises and twists. Kore-eda succeeds in keeping the viewer wondering what comes next. But at the same time, the result is less convincing than in some of Kore-eda's best family dramas. It's not his best work that's for certain.

Secret Agent Super Dragon
An evil organization is drugging people for world domination by testing it out in a town in Michigan. After his colleague is killed, the eponymous Secret Agent Super Dragon comes out of retirement to investigate. He discovers that the culprits in this crime are actually part of an international crime syndicate, and that they are smuggling the drugs in imported vases. Super Dragon goes to Amsterdam to investigate. While certainly a bad movie, it could have been much worse. The entire movie is mostly just nothing but spy clichรฉs and it's pretty easy to tell that this was made around the same time as the original Sean Connery James Bond movies. There really is very little to distinguish this from a Bond movie. It's mostly a ripoff. There are in fact a few good lines here and there. The Dragon is remarkably smooth and smug, and his lumpy, cheerful sidekick Babyface is along to help solve the mysteries of dead colleagues, toxic gum and villains who can't stop decorating!! Don't come into this expecting a kick ass spy movie but if you do want to see yet another Bond rip off from the 60's you might enjoy it.
