Footloose
I had put off from watching this movie for a long time due to it's reputation for being rather cheesy. Well, it is cheesy but in a good way. It's the movie that made Kevin Bacon a star and he carries off his likable role as Ren McCormack extremely well. There's no denying the feel-good factor and the charm that Footloose shows even though the story about a town banning music and dancing would be a bit unlikely yet it is perfectly suitable for the teenage audience at which it is pitched. The movie has a great cast which includes John Lithgow, Sarah Jessica Parker, Chris Penn and Lori Singer. The soundtrack which features Kenny Loggins' memorable title track is fantastic. Footloose is certainly no masterpiece but it succeeds in being a lighthearted knockabout caper, and as such is a very enjoyable movie.

Ingrid Goes West
This was a pleasant surprise of a movie about obsessive personality in the social media-centric age we live in. Aubrey Plaza's character Ingrid has serious social issues. She equates passing interactions on social media as meaningful friendships. These virtual relationships quickly turn into real obsessions. She targets a California Insta-girl named Taylor who responds to one of Ingrid's comments and the next thing you know Ingrid is heading to LA. Through some mild stalking and other questionable behavior, Ingrid becomes fast friends with Taylor and is desperate to win and retain Taylor's affection through any means necessary. It's quite an uncomfortable watch at times and even though it's billed as a dark comedy there's no laughs to be had here. Aubrey Plaza is excellent as Ingrid and you do sort of sympathise with her as she's rather lonely and wants to be loved but the way she goes about getting friendship and love is dubious. The supporting cast led by Elizabeth Olsen and O'Shea Jackson Jr are great. All in all, a fabulous movie that looks at how social media and the need for acceptance will drive someone to go to many means to the point of obsession. Go watch.

Mission: Impossible - Fallout
What a fantastic movie this is! Three nuclear bombs go missing and it's up to Cruise's Ethan Hunt and his gang of IMF agents to find them before it's too late. The movie showcases a perfect blend of breathtaking action, eye-catching locations and exhilarating cinematography combined with suspenseful thrills. Every single action scene works, particularly the final one. Ageless, riveting and seemingly unstoppable, Tom Cruise remains a force of nature in movie. Talk about a guy giving it his all even doing his own stunts which made him break his ankle. Director John McQuarrie weaves elements of tragedy and political commentary into the storyline. Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames and Alec Baldwin all return and they're joined by Henry Cavill's no-nonsense CIA operative August Walker with Rebecca Ferguson's MI6 spy, Ilsa Faust, also along for the ride. Overall this is a thrilling, witty and intelligent blockbuster that manages to up the wow factor from its predecessors. Do not miss out on it.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again
I didn't like the first Mamma Mia movie at all but thankfully due to the delightful Lily James, I enjoyed this movie much more. The story flirts between the past and present to see how Donna met the 3 fathers in her youth and of Sophie's reopening of her late mother's hotel and then the impending birth and christening of her baby during the present day. I know there's been a lot of controversy about Donna's backstory as it contradicts what was said in the first movie but who cares. Lily James is fantastic as the young Donna and has a great singing voice. To be honest she steals the movie. It seems that even Pierce Brosnan has improved his singing voice this time as well! Meryl Streep only appears in the final 15 mins. The ABBA songs that are sung throughout the movie are catchy and it's hard not to sing along to them. I couldn't really care about the first movie but this one I did enjoy. ABBA fans will no doubt love it.

The Vicious Circle
You'd never think this movie that's full of twists and turns was made by the duo behind Carry On - Peter Rogers and Gerald Thomas. John Mills plays Dr Latimer who is asked by a friend to pick up a German actress from the airport and drop her off at a hotel. Later upon returning to his flat, he finds the actress has been murdered. A nightmare begins for Latimer in which he finds himself under suspicion for the murder by the police and also gets mixed up into a world of blackmail. A solid outing for Mills here in a Hitchcock like mystery playing an ordinary man thrown into a series of situations beyond his control. The story is wonderful and you never really know who the culprit behind the murder is until near the end. Wilfred Hyde-White is great as the man who holds the key to the whole case with Lionel Jeffries appearing in key moments as the dastardly news reporter Jeffrey Windsor. Worth seeking out and on the whole a rather enjoyable movie.

Out of the Fog
An ex-convict fresh out of jail is the prime suspect when a series of blonde women are murdered always during a full moon. This is a nice little B picture from prolific thriller director Montgomery Tully. It follows the police investigation for the murders and the stacks are high against George Mallon, the ex-con. Everything points to him being the murderer but the police use a blonde female sergeant as bait to find out if Mallon really is the killer. All of the murders take place off-screen. One of the movie's mistakes is that none of the characters are likable even those of the side of the law. Mallon's attitude puts you right off him and the police are portrayed as bullies. It's only when Susan Travers as the female police sergeant enters the fray that there's somebody you can warm up to. A short running time prevents the story from dragging so this title is entertaining even if it never hits the heights it should.

Big Boobs Buster
After being rejected by a boy at school that she's flat chested, a girl Masako adopts a super hero secret identity and attacks well endowed girls at her school in order to make silicone moulds of their breasts and parade them around town if they don't stop seducing boys at school!! This is a fairly funny Japanese super hero parody and not at all that sleazy. It's camp and light-hearted. It starts out pretty well but it soon turns somewhat boring as Masako's secret identity is found out by a rival and she's blackmailed to join the school athletic track team to run against a big breasted girl. Her prize if she wins the race is she can make moulds of all the well endowed girls in the team. Yes, there's even a classic 80's style training montage of Masako starting out weak and becoming stronger and stronger over a collection of clips with cheesy music playing in the background. It's a shame the movie fell apart after an entertaining first half which had me laughing as some of the dialogue is funny. No idea why it turned into a moral tale about a person working hard to reach their goal. All in all, this isn't a total sleaze fest but it does have some comedy and a general perverted nature to it.

King Kong Lives
Hilarious sequel to Dino De Laurentiis 1976 remake. It's hard to say whether this was meant to be a tongue in cheek movie or one to take seriously! Kong having survived his so-called death is given a new artificial heart and fresh blood after a giant female ape is captured on Skull Island. When Kong senses her nearby he breaks free from his chains and goes in search of the female. The US Army is ordered to capture them by whatever means necessary. This is definitely in the category of one of those movies that's bad through and through. The script and the dialogue is terrible. The scenes in which Kong and his lady look at one another lovingly and hug each other are so funny. The entire concept of some scenes is bizarre, daft and just complete total and utter nonsense while at times it becomes embarrassing to watch. You could say the movie is fairly entertaining for all the wrong reasons! Director John Guillermin who also made the 1976 movie botched up big time with this one as it is devoid of any excitement, scares, action or tension. I felt sorry for Linda Hamilton who came from starring in The Terminator to this turkey. By all means take a look at this movie and have a damn good laugh at it. An absolute treat for bad film fans!

High & Low: The Movie 2 - End of SKY
Perhaps I made a mistake in not watching the drama or the first movie before seeing this but I didn't think it was that great. If you're a fan of violent gangs fighting against each other for control of territory you might enjoy this movie but I thought it was boring. The Crows Zero trilogy which is somewhat similar to this movie was a lot more fun to watch and had better and interesting characters. There is hardly any character development in the storyline. The whole High & Low franchise will interest EXILE Tribe fans as many members of the popular music group have high profile roles. Some of the action scenes in this movie are pretty decent such as the USB van/car chase but on the whole the fighting choreography isn't good. After a while seeing another fight kicking off got a bit dull. It's a very repetitive movie and it goes on for too long at 2 hours.

Innocent Curse
Abused children by their parents vanish only to come back later singing a strange song. Three days later the child's abuser is usually found dead. More cases like this start to appear. Newspaper reporter Shunya investigates and finds out about Tommy's Curse relating to a circus a long time ago. Shunya's girlfriend Naomi who was herself abused by her mother as a child starts seeing ghostly dead children and a Pied Piper figure that may be behind the murders. Takashi Shimizu is best known for creating the Ju-On franchise in Japan but everything he's done after those movies hasn't been that good. Sadly this movie isn't going to enhance his reputation either. It's a poor horror movie with the same creepy kids story that Japanese cinema has churned out before in the last 10 years or so. The Pied Piper villain is weak and the ghostly children aren't that scary. It's like the story was just going through the motions and it feels rushed. Arioka Daiki from the boy band Hey! Say! JUMP! and Mugi Kadowaki are fine as the leads. I'm sure with a better script and a more memorable villain this movie might have worked but as it is it's not worth bothering with.

There Is No Lid On The Sea
A story about a woman Mari who leaves her job in Tokyo to move back home to a small seaside town to open a shaved ice cafe with natural ingredients used as a syrup topping. She thinks that there will be plenty of customers despite the reservations of her ex-boyfriend Osumu who points out that the town has been dying for many years with businesses closing down. Despite this, the cafe opens and with a limited menu (only 2 flavours), Mari finds out the harsh reality of running a business but with the help of Hajime, the daughter of her mother's friend who is reflecting on her own troubles, both women try their best to adapt and change to better their lives. Don't come into this movie expecting major drama. This is a slow and thoughtful movie with brilliant acting from the small cast. Superb and beautiful photography of the town of Toi on the Izu Peninsula. I found this an interesting movie about changes that take place is small towns through the eyes of a naive woman who looks at the past with rose tinted eyes.
