The Terror of the Tongs
This isn't a very well known Hammer movie as it's not a horror movie but a violent adventure. Christopher Lee plays the evil and cunning Chung King, the leader of the Red Tongs in 1910 Hong Kong who will kill anyone who stands in their way of their slave and opium trade. The Tongs make the mistake of killing a British sea captain's daughter and he goes all out for revenge against them. Christopher Lee is basically playing Fu Manchu by any other name. Future Dr Who villain actor Roger Delgado plays his right hand man. This movie is far from being the best that Hammer were producing at the time but it's entertaining to watch. Hammer completists will want to give it a go.

Venom
I can't understand why the critics have taken pot shots at this movie because it's great. It's not a superhero movie as Venom is more of an anti-hero. Tom Hardy makes this entire movie work with a completely passionately versatile performance showing immense acting talent like he always does. Once Eddie Brock achieves full symbiosis with Venom, it becomes an absolutely intense and fun experience to witness. The dialogue exchanges between Eddie and Venom is hilarious. There are also cool action sequences to enjoy. I thought Riz Ahmed was fine as the conniving billionaire villain. Even though it's a PG-13 movie, it is still a very dark and violent story with some outstanding body horror sequences. To those that are bored with formulaic Marvel Universe movies, this is a breath of fresh air and all the better for it.

The Predator
Just when you thought the Predator franchise couldn't get any worse than the last installment, this one comes along and takes the biscuit as being the absolute pits. It is terrible, a train wreck with it's pathetic jokes, crappy script and awful acting. I'm not sure if director Shane Black wanted this to be a comedy action movie or not? There are mountains of both intentional and unintentional comedy littered throughout. At times, it's difficult to tell which is happening. The special effects are laughably bad in certain instances, but maybe that was a nod to the original? Again, it's difficult to tell. It's an insult to the first Predator movie which was fantastic. Even the 2nd movie was fine but all the other entries after that have been poor. Don't bother with this tripe as it has damaged the Predator franchise for good.

The Ugly Duckling
This is a comedy version of the Jekyll & Hyde story set in the 1950's. Henry Jekyll is the black sheep of the family. A clumsy buffoon who embarasses the rest of his pharmacist family. One evening whilst he is banned from attending a dance with his older brother and sister, he discovers a secret formula by his relation and turns from the idiot Jekyll into the smooth and dashing Teddy Hyde. Hyde becomes involved with a bunch of crooks who are planning a daring heist to steal the crown jewels. Bernard Bresslaw who was riding high on the success of the TV comedy The Army Game is the top billing in this movie alongside future Dr Who Jon Pertwee. This is one of those movies that is long lost forgotten by the British public. It's a good comedy (not a classic though) by Hammer Studios with Bresslaw on top form as both Jekyll and Hyde. His interaction with Jon Pertwee as his elder brother is fantastic. There is far too much of Joe Loss and His Orchestra which somewhat spoils the flow of the movie. This will probably interest Hammer fans more than anybody else as it was the first of their three versions of the Jekyll & Hyde story. I enjoyed it.

A nice slow burner of a horror movie. A frustrated, angst-ridden teenage girl awakens something in the woods when she naively performs an occult ritual to evoke a witch to kill her mother. There's no question that this low budget indie movie is driven by solid performances, specifically by Nicole Munoz and Laurie Holden. The dynamic between these characters is believable and could pass as a standalone drama if the horror elements weren't included. The most impressive aspect of this movie is how director Adam MacDonald used his low budget to create a piece of film that uses effective storytelling and edge-of-your-seat suspense. If you're an individual who prefers the louder, high budget horror shows, I think you will be slightly disappointed with this movie. On the other hand if you enjoy movies that take their time in telling a story then this has a frightening pay off right at the end. Worth seeking out.

Isle of Dogs
In modern day Japan, a dog flu epidemic has turned a city against its furry friends. The evil dog hating mayor has rounded up all dogs and exiled them to trash island, where they live in filth and suffering. Atari, the adopted son of the Mayor, flies a plane onto the island to rescue his dog Spots and rebel against the system. Wes Anderson's love letter to dogs and Japan is a creatively made, character driven comedy story, with a melancholic and satirical undertone. The animation, editing and sound design are the main brass here, and are used to great effect to communicate much of the story. The voice performances were pitch perfect and the right actors were chosen. Bryan Cranston was terrific and so was Edward Norton. There are nice and funny twists throughout the whole movie. And in the end it has an important message to tell. Another winner from Wes Anderson.

A Private Function
Set in the UK during the post-war years when food rationing especially that of meat was still ongoing, this delightful comedy finds some people in a small town illegally raising a pig in order to slaughter it for a party to celebrate Princess Elizabeth's marriage. But just before the party, the pig is stolen by Gilbert Chilvers on the instigation of his wife and his mother-in-law, who can't live with the idea that they no longer belong to the notables of the community and therefore can't get more meat... This movie's witty script was written by none other than Alan Bennett. Most of the best comedy happens when the pig has been kidnapped and is living in the Chilvers' house. Another good reason why you should give this movie a try is the acting. Michael Palin is excellent as the somewhat quiet, but lovable husband who does everything his wife - Maggie Smith plays that role really very well - wants him to do. Liz Smith is also very funny as Smith's batty mother. If you like the typical British humour, than this is definitely a movie you shouldn't miss.

Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead (2014)
This is an inventive and darkly humorous Australian zombie flick that may turn off some purists who think zombie movies should adhere to a set list of rules. But if you like your zombie movies to evolve new styles and have fun with old clichés, then you just might enjoy it. It is gory and over the top with energetic editing, perhaps to a fault. The dialogue is mostly amusing with a few parts that fall flat. The movie is a lot of fun with some interesting elements from other stuff such as Mad Max thrown in. The filmmakers make it seem like the story is unimportant, which is true but when you've got wild bloody action taking place does it really matter? This zombie horror was better than I expected and if you're after a fun ride then be sure to check it out.

Never Mind the Quality: Feel the Width
This is the rarely seen spin-off movie for the popular late 60's ITV sitcom. Set in London's East End, it's about a pair of unlikely business partners. Manny Cohen is a Jewish tailor with Patrick Kelly, his Catholic Irish friend who try hard to put their religious and cultural differences aside in the interests of making a living, but mutual misunderstanding all too easily gets the better of them. In the movie the pair get a sexy young female assistant Rita, seriously fall out after a gambling incident, experience woman trouble, find themselves burgled, and eventually end up on holiday in Rome after posing as priests only to cause chaos at the Vatican! One of the better sitcoms to transfer well to the big screen yet this movie feels very much like a couple of episodes that have been stitched together. There's plenty of laughs to be had here and it's far ruder than what you would have seen in the TV series with topless women parading around. John Bluthal and Joe Lynch are brilliant as the ever-warring Cohen and Kelly. There's even an appearance from Yootha Joyce as a woman who tries to seduce Manny. I've never seen the series but after watching this movie I'd like to check it out even though the majority of the first 2 series are missing from the archives, most probably wiped as was the policy at the time. If you're after a good farce, you can't go wrong with this movie.
