Identity
On a dark and stormy night, 11 strangers have to take refuge in an isolated motel when a rainstorm turns into a monsoon. One by one they begin to be killed...but by who and for what reason? I didn't know what to expect from this movie so I was happy by how good it really was. Such an imaginative mystery storyline. By the first 10 or 20 minutes you get this feeling that the entire movie is going to be nonstop suspense that gives you a feeling as if you were the character but instead of you making the decisions you are being forced into them. There are numerous red herrings to make you think and the twists that are thrown in took me by surprise. Brilliant acting by John Cusack and Amanda Peet with the rest of the cast which includes Ray Liotta performing well. The movie had me on the edge of my seat and held my interest from start to finish. I loved it.

The Iron Maiden
A delightful comedy by the men behind the Carry On movies - Peter Rogers and Gerald Thomas. Michael Craig plays Jack Hopkins, an aircraft designer who's hobby is traction engines. An American airline executive comes to the UK to buy new aircraft and it's a two horse race between Hopkins' design and another by a rival company called the Gryphon. Unfortunately the relationship between Hopkins and the American doesn't get off to a good start when the American's car crashes into Hopkins' pride and joy called The Iron Maiden. I was surprised by how good this gentle comedy was. The movie may not be as well known or liked as Genevieve or The Titfield Thunderbolt but it's got it's own charm to it with a nice story. It hasn't got any of the smut that's associated with the Carry On movies either. As this is a transport movie, there are many classic vehicles (planes/cars/traction engines) of the time seen. The English countryside in Summer has never looked better. The traction engine The Iron Maiden is still around to this day and can be seen in various steam rallies around the UK. There's a great cast to this movie with two of the Carry On team in Jim Dale and Joan Sims getting cameo roles. All in all, this is a wonderful family comedy which I really enjoyed. One to seek out for sure.

The First Purge
Probably the worst movie in the Purge franchise. It's a prequel story about the very first purge that takes place on Staten Island. This is basically a race movie - the good black people of a neighbourhood taking on the evil white militias that come to their place to take them all out. What once was a franchise about surviving the night, now has become a (semi)political movie about racism and racial divides. As to the cast, I've never heard about any of them apart from Marisa Tomei playing a role of the person that comes up with the idea of the purge. The movie stops short of terrible by its flowing plot, quick editing and visuals but I can't really recommend it for those that liked the previous entries in the franchise.

Mary Magdalene

7/10

Mary Magdalene
The story of the last weeks of Jesus Christ told out of the perspective of the first ever female apostle in Mary Magdalene. It is an interpretation of the Bible and the new found redemption of Mary Magdalene by the Vatican in 2016. Rooney Mara plays the title role and gives quite a solid performance. Joaquin Phoenix also has his moments as Jesus. The cinematography was fabulous. The whole look and feel felt accurate and it had a nice score. It did feel too modern often in the way the people talked and the way they gestured. Garth Davis as director has put together a new narrative of Jesus and Mary Magdalene which won't be to everyone's taste but I enjoyed it.

There's a Girl in My Soup
Peter Sellers plays a smarmy, self-absorbed star of a TV gourmet show who enjoys the swinging bachelor life, even as he hits his mid-40s. He meets up with Goldie Hawn, a hip sexually-liberated young girl who is 19 years old and the sparks as they say fly. This movie started off well but after the first half hour it went downhill. It's not a comedy with that many laughs if I'm being honest and Hawn's character turns from somebody that's playing hard to get into a giggling annoyance. The whole section of the movie where the couple go to France to wine and dine is tedious to say the least. There is absolutely no chemistry between Hawn and Sellers characters. This is certainly not one of Seller's best works and I would say many of the movies he made during the late 60's to the early 70's are not up to scratch. Overall a rather misguided and lightly dull movie which I won't be bothering with again.

The Shrine
A trio of American journalists go to a small village in Poland to investigate the mysterious death of a young man. Once there, the villagers are unfriendly and warn them to leave. They see a mist that seems to hang over a forest near the village and go to take a look but come across a statue to a demon. The villagers arrive in the forest and capture the trio to take them to a shrine. At first I thought this was going to be a slow moving and boring horror but thankfully the last third of the movie more than makes up for the other two thirds. The movie is fairly low budget, so don't go in looking for fantastic special effects. The acting is decent. There is hardly any gore at first but the red stuff comes thick and fast by the end. It is also fairly creepy at times as well. In the end, it was a good and entertaining horror but you need some patience before the gory payout.

Idol on Parade
Teen pop idol Jeep Jackson is drafted into the army for 2 years which presents problems for his superiors when he secretly bunks off with his agent to sing at concerts at night or is dating the Drill Sergeant's daughter. Made as a parody to cash in on Elvis being conscripted into the army at the time, this movie proved popular and made leading actor Anthony Newley into a huge star. In fact this movie made him into a bona-fide music performer with several of his records entering the UK chart. It's a feel-good comedy similar to early Carry On movies with Newley performing 4 numbers during the movie. Sid James, Lionel Jeffries, Bernie Winters (minus his brother Mike) and a cameo role for Clive Dunn appear in the movie. As a whole, it's an amusing movie and well worth taking a look.

Man in the Moon
Kenneth More is Billy Blood, a man with perfect health that's selected by the British Atomic Space Centre to become the first man to land on the Moon. They don't want to send their trained astronauts in case something happens to them so Blood is sent by them to test the waters so to say. Kenneth More is charming as the leading character Billy Blood. The story has a lot of gentle comedy with some of the laughs being provided by the jealous astronauts with one played by Charles Gray trying to sabotage Blood from going to the Moon. The stunning blonde Shirley Anne Field plays More's love interest. There's a bit of a twist once More supposedly lands on the Moon! The surreal opening to the movie shows you the type of humour you'll find on show here. Whilst this comedy has some slow spots here and there, on the whole it's an amusing movie to watch.

The Legacy
An American couple come over to the UK and on a motorcycle ride in the country they are "accidentally" run off the road by a wealthy man who invites them to stay at his mansion whilst their bikes are being repaired in the local village. Once there, numerous guests start to appear and each one dies in mysterious circumstances. The American woman slowly begins to realise that her presence at the house is no coincidence and she's been primed to take over the evil power of the very ill owner of the mansion. Quite a good horror mystery but be aware that it is a little slow paced but to be fair to the story it doesn't have long boring stretches of irrelevant dialogue or character development that nobody wants or needs, the majority of what takes place is relevant to the story. The twists and turns are revealed gradually, although not completely to my satisfaction and a few things could have been elaborated on a little bit more. The movie managed to keep my interest throughout and I liked the overall story and where it went, even if the last couple of minutes didn't make a whole lot of sense and felt somewhat rushed and unfinished. The location filming around Loseley House in Guildford, Essex is beautiful. There's a little bit of gore involved and some nice deaths. It has faults to be sure and it isn't a masterpiece by any means, but for what it was I liked it.

The Pirates of Blood River
On a tropical island, a man is sent from his small village to a penal colony after an affair with a married woman. He escapes from the colony and is discovered by a bunch of pirates led by Christopher Lee. The pirates agree to help him get back home but only if he'll tell them where the colonists' treasure is buried. After seeing how nasty a bunch they are, he rejoins his former village in a fight to see off the pirates. A unique and entertaining Hammer swashbuckling movie with the storyline set entirely on land. The only time you see a ship at sea is in the opening credits. There's good action, especially for the battle at the finale, while it's good to see low cost effects, such as a piranha attack simulated by ripples on the water which is quite effective. The plot is brisk and there's never a dull moment. Kerwin Mathews is good as the dashing lead man Jonathan Standing whilst Christopher Lee is as dependable as always as the pirate Captain LaRoche. Oliver Reed has a bit part role as one of the pirates Brocaire and there's a cameo role for a very young Denis Waterman. This might not be one of the greatest pirate movie you'll ever see but it's great fun and is entertaining enough.

They Can
Sentenced to death for murder, Pitt, a civil servant reveals that he has long been a foreign agent smuggling secrets out of the country. He meets with special branch officer Inspector Brown and offers to reveal the identity of an elusive master spy in return for a reprieve. With 5 days before Pitt is to be hung, Brown sets out to trace the identity of the spy without having to reprieve Pitt. The mystery starts well and has potential but it is never filled as fully as I'd hoped at the start. Instead it goes off the rails and becomes baggy and the climax is a real damp squib. It's a shame because it moved quickly for 30 minutes or so and promised much. It is still worth watching once but it isn't very good. Overall this is an average mystery movie but it could have been much better.

The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll

The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll
A good adaptation by Hammer Studios of the Jekyll & Hyde story. It's well-directed by Terence Fisher, and the sets, costumes, set decorations and cinematography are excellent. Performances are very good, particularly Paul Massie in the title roles, though he may seem a bit over-the-top at times. He does an excellent job of differentiating between Jekyll and Hyde especially vocally. Christopher Lee turned down the role of Jekyll for fear of being typecast so he took the character of Jekyll's friend - the pompous and sleazy Paul Allen instead. Well worth a watch.

There's been a lot of buzz lately about this movie with some saying it's the best horror movie in years. It's OK I'll grant you that but it's certainly not as good as certain people make out it is because many things do not make any sense at all. The storyline on the whole is frankly ridiculous and rather laughable. On the plus side, the atmosphere of the movie is done very well. The sense that something evil has manifested itself grows as the story goes on (after a rather slow start I might add). Just as you think it's building up to something good, the finale lets it down. The performances from the cast which includes Toni Collette and Gabriel Byrne are fine. In the end I'm not sure why this movie has been highly praised by so many as I can't say it's memorable at all. Give a week or two and I'll have forgotten all about it. It's just an average horror at best.
