Life in Emergency Ward 10
Emergency Ward 10 was Britain's first medical TV drama and proved to be a huge ratings winner during it's 10 year run from 1957-67. This spin-off movie was released 2 years after it began. The story revolves around a new registrar at Oxbridge General Hospital that comes there after a stay in America with a new idea in a heart/lung machine that could revolutionise surgery. He also has to win over his colleagues who don't really trust the new machine especially when they lose a patient after using it during surgery. A young 7 year old boy has a hole in his heart and they want to use the new machine on him but there are doubts from his parents and some of the hospital staff. There isn't a lot of high drama in this movie, it's all gentle sedate stuff. It's hard to see from watching this movie why the TV drama was such a hit but don't judge a book by it's cover. Once you see some of the episodes from the TV series you'll understand why it became one of the country's most beloved dramas. It's interesting to see how much has changed in our nation's hospitals from this movie. Kids would never share a ward with adults these days and pregnant women would never be x-rayed! The regular cast are fine and there is even a guest appearance from a young Joan Sims as a woman expecting 4 babies!! I thought it was an interesting time piece on how well hospitals were run in the past with no cutbacks that sadly take place now.

Miss Hokusai
An anime movie revolving around the daughter of Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai who drew the famous Great Wave painting. It's basically a slice of life story as the viewer follows O-Ei and the fraught relationship she has with her father and the love she has for her blind little half-sister O-Nao. There's no real plot to the movie at all and certainly no character development because nothing much is known about O-Ei's life apart from her failed marriage. The animation is different from other anime movies I've watched and makes a nice change. It isn't an anime for children to watch either as erotic drawings and a bedroom scene are shown. I wouldn't say this movie held my interest that much but it made 90 mins pass quickly. You do learn something about how life was in Edo before the fall of the samurai but in the end the story didn't do that much for me.

Mixed Doubles
A good romantic comedy centering on the sport of table tennis. Quitting table tennis as a child because of her strict mother, Tamako as an adult is a low level office worker with no love life but that soon changes when the company's table tennis star starts dating her. When she discovers he's cheating on her with his mixed doubles partner, Tamako packs her job in and moves back to her hometown in the country where she inevitably starts going to the small table tennis club there and soon pairs up with a man Hagiwara who is trying to get over an episode in his life. I've been a fan of Yui Aragaki since she was in her teens and in this movie she's at her beautiful and charming best. The story as such is predictable at best as you know that Tamako and Hagiwara will hook up at some point and also come up against Tamako's ex and his girlfriend in a table tennis match. The movie has many likable characters that you root for. The movie is all about going back to your roots to heal old wounds and rediscovering a passion for something you might have hated in the past. Yui Aragaki and Eita are great as the leads who get off to a bad start after an incident on a train. You can see the chemistry the two have onscreen. The movie builds up to the table tennis showdown match and I can't say I was surprised with how that turned out. All in all even though the story is predictable, I found it warm and uplifting as well and I enjoyed it.

Psychic Kusuo
This is the live action adaptation of the popular manga directed by Yuichi Fukuda who also helmed the Gintama movie. Unlike that movie which was really funny and well made, this one isn't that good. It's ridiculously OTT, full of weird characters and whilst there are many pop culture references to other Japanese manga/anime series dotted around the movie, the pacing of the story is poor and some of the cast overact a bit too much. The main person doing this with her facial expressions is Kanna Hashimoto who plays Saiki's secret admirer Kokomi. I usually like Kanna's acting and whilst she may look all cute in this movie it's not enough to save her weak performance. The movie isn't a total disaster because I did laugh several times. Overall though I wouldn't watch it again.

Skyscraper
It's The Towering Inferno meets Die Hard! This is just a pure adrenaline rush of a movie. Dwayne Johnson is a former FBI agent turned security adviser who must rescue his family from the tallest building in the world in Hong Kong after terrorists take it over and set it on fire. This movie doesn't do anything new and I didn't really care if it copied other movies - all that mattered to me was the story of a man battling against the bad guys and the odds in trying to save his family and this movie does it well. You'll be entertained by the OTT thrills and perils faced by Johnson as he dangles several times from a burning skyscraper. The acting here is solid from all cast members, even the child actors. Overall, I've for sure seen better, more enjoyable action movies, but nonetheless, I had a really good time with Skyscraper.

Life of the Party (2018)
I'd read so many negative reviews about this movie so I wasn't expecting much but what a pleasant surprise I got. Sure, the plot about a middle aged person going to college and getting down with the young has been done before but it was still a fun movie with a great performance by Melissa McCarthy. What's good about this comedy is even though it's a typical college frat house affair there's hardly any swearing and no nudity. It does try too hard at times to get a laugh though but I definitely thought it was funny. Apart from McCarthy, the young female cast led by Molly Gordon was pretty good. Don't listen to the negativity surrounding this movie. If you're after a fun movie that will make you smile go check it out.

Death Wish
After a string of below average movies, Bruce Willis is back at his best in this remake of the Charles Bronson classic. He plays Dr Paul Kersey, a surgeon who finds his wife has been murdered and teenage daughter in a coma after a vicious robbery at their home. The police have no leads so Kersey goes out to find the criminals on his own and getting a name of The Grim Reaper by the media. I really enjoyed this movie. It's a fantastic old school action movie just like you saw in the 80's. Willis is on top form as the vigilante out to find his wife's killer on the streets of Chicago. You could say it's almost as good as Bronson's original. As Eli Roth directs the movie, there's some gore involved especially in 2 scenes so don't watch if you hate the sight of blood. The revenge story is well written and the action scenes are exciting. This movie really entertains from the very first frame to the last. Those that love revenge movies should get a kick out of this one.

Witness in the Dark
An old lady is brutally killed in her apartment and the only 'witness' is a blind young woman who passed the killer on the stairs. It seems the killer was after an expensive brooch that the old lady kept hidden in a jar of coffee and it's now been been inherited by the blind woman. Will the killer be back now to get the brooch with the police using the blind woman as bait? A taut little b-movie thriller. Viewers will undoubtedly make some comparisons with the classic Audrey Hepburn thriller Wait Until Dark but this low budget movie is just as good as it. Nigel Green plays the killer and is quite menacing but it is Patricia Dainton who steals the movie as the courageous young blind woman. Madge Ryan also deserves a mention for her performance as the interfering and nosy neighbour, Mrs Finch who sets things in motion for the murder by blabbing about the brooch in the pub. Watch out for a very young Richard O'Sullivan as an angry blind boy who is getting braille lessons. All in all, I enjoyed this movie as it is well written with a wonderful cast. Definitely worth seeking out.

The Damned (1962)

The Damned (1962)
A movie of two halves: the first centres on a violent motorbike gang led by Kane in the seaside town of Weymouth. Kane's pretty sister becomes romantically involved with an American tourist which pisses Kane off. The gang start chasing the pair to a military base and then to a cliff face who appear to fall off but they don't. Having survived they stumble upon a cave full of young children who are locked away in a laboratory. This is what the second half is all about as Kane joins the pair in the cave. The children are all cold to the touch and part of a government experiment in which they are all radioactive. The adults try to escape with the children but the government are hot on their tails. An interesting sci-fi movie by Hammer. It's totally unlike anything else the studios ever produced. A strange, somber and unpredictable movie that depicts a world on the brink of nuclear annihilation and the UK government using radioactive children as weapons. It leads to a fairly bleak ending for the 'heroes'. Great acting from all concerned such as a young Oliver Reed as Kane and Kenneth Cope as one of his lackeys. The movie could have worked out much better if it had only been more tense and mysterious but it's still a good watch. Give it a shot. Chances are you might end up liking it, despite all of its flaws and the wasted potential.

It's Trad, Dad!
There's no real plot to this movie, it's an excuse to showcase the hip dixie jazz music that was happening in the UK before thankfully The Beatles hit the scene the following year and changed everything. This movie is fine if you like this sort of music but I thought it was awful. The only thing of note from this movie is it was the directing debut of Richard Lester. It's supposed to be a comedy musical but the humour on show is useless. There's a lot of artists performing which includes Chubby Checker and Del Shannon. Even a DJ legend in Alan 'Fluff' Freeman has a small role. Overall, it's a nice time capsule on the early 60's music scene in the UK and those that enjoyed that era will like this movie but sadly it did nothing for me and I thought it was terrible.

Bedtime Stories
Not one of Adam Sandler's best movies truth be told. It's an extremely mediocre leaning towards bad movie. I really thought this would be fun because of Sandler starring in it but I didn't find it amusing at all. It may have been the fact that he had to tone down his humour for Disney. Another problem is that all of the characters are extremely poorly written and even the so-called bedtime stories aren't even clever or very interesting either. I'm sure kids will enjoy it though because that's who the target audience is for but those that like the usual Adam Sandler comedies will find it rather boring.
