A fantastic British noir movie by Hammer Studios. A dangerous criminal has escaped from jail after committing a robbery that went wrong. Inspector Harry Martineau, who happened to have gone to school with the criminal, guesses that he will return home to Manchester in order to pick up his share from the job. The criminal does return to Manchester and ends up with the inspector on his tail as he moves through the underworld, trying to find a place to hide.
This movie is clearly intended to mimic the American film noir being produced en-masse during the 50's; although it does retain an aura of Britishness which is achieved through the locations and strong accents of most of the lead characters. There's more to the plot than just what is immediately going on, and the Inspector's personal life is one of the main sub-plots. The cast is strong, with Stanley Baker and John Crawford taking the lead roles and doing well with them; there's also a small appearance for the great Donald Pleasance. Overall, Hell is a City is a very good British noir, and well worth a look.

This is a hard-hitting character study based around Nicol Williamson, playing a ruthless businessman in London who heads north to Liverpool when his father is beaten to death by a thug. Similar in feel to Get Carter, this is a gritty and ice-cold look at a man adrift in the modern world. Williamson's character is pure anti-hero; he's repulsive and slimy, given to bedding women and tossing them aside when he's finished with him, and yet the depth and realism of his character makes him identifiable and all too human. The revenge story isn't as pronounced as in the Michael Caine movie, but there are some hard-hitting moments here. Try it out and you won't be disappointed.

A gripping murder mystery as the calm of prosperous Oakley Park is shattered when a local young woman is found murdered. A Scotland Yard detective is called in to solve the case. It seems that there are people in the town with secrets that they don't want to be uncovered. Will Superintendent Halloran find the murderer before he strikes again?
This is a classic British noir which has largely been forgotten and such a shame too as it's a fantastic movie. The ever reliable Sir John Mills plays a detective that doesn't follow the rules to get results even though it puts some people's noses out of joint. The problem is Mills' detective has too many suspects involved in the murder and he also gets romantically involved with the niece of one of them. There is a brilliant cliff-hanging finale on the church steeple which smacks of Hitchcock. I really liked this movie which exposed the dark underside of 1950's middle-class respectability.

This is a re-imagining of the Robin Hood story and much like the King Arthur one with Jude Law it fails miserably. It's a huge disappointment on almost every level. As far as Robin Hood adaptations go, it is for me the worst (worse than Russell Crowe's version) and so way off what a movie of the character and stories should be, the complete opposite in fact. The costumes the characters wear looks straight out of a Primark store. The acting is atrocious. Taron Egerton is badly miscast as Robin Hood. Jamie Foxx as Little John comes over as having walked onto the wrong set because he belonged in a completely different movie altogether. Tim Minchin doesan't even look like a proper friar of the time and the character's attempts at humour is poor. I would go on to say this is one of the worst movies I've seen this year. Don't bother with it.

The 2nd Sicario movie follows a CIA agent who is brought aboard by the U.S. government to combat the Mexican drug cartels who are suspected of smuggling terrorists across the border. After deciding that their best option would be to start a war between the major cartels, he recruits a black operative for the mission but things become complicated when the daughter of a top kingpin is abducted.
I thought this movie was just as good as the original. The tone and feel is exactly the same. Taylor Sheridan's script packs a gripping plot but with no one to separate the right from wrong this time around. The action sequences are brilliant. As for the performances, both Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin deliver strong inputs in their reprising roles. All in all, this is a riveting movie from start to finish and a worthy sequel.

I enjoyed the first Fantastic Beasts movie but this one wasn't so good. While the visuals are as magical as ever, it's clear that the filmmakers are so distracted by trying to build a franchise that they're forgetting to actually tell a good story! The chemistry between our main four heroes was diluted by so many new characters being introduced. With so many new people and also so many questions for our old heroes, there wasn't enough time for any kind of (explainable) character development or for the viewers to connect with anyone on the screen. As a whole, the movie screamed "money hungry" and "franchise building" rather than letting us really connect with the characters. It also seemed as if they were only adding in twists that would surely get a reaction from viewers despite the fact that they not only discredited the original Harry Potter movies, but just felt like unrealistic and a little too convenient! Very disappointing.

Young Clara needs a magical, one-of-a-kind key to unlock a box that contains a priceless gift from her late mother. A golden thread leads her to the coveted key, but it soon disappears into a strange and mysterious parallel world.
I wanted to like this Disney fantasy movie and indeed it started out quite well but it went downhill very quickly after 20 mins. The main problem is it's boring with it's predictable plot, the acting isn't that good and the CGI is at times terrible. Even the action scenes is badly choreographed. Probably the only bright spot in the movie was Mackenzie Foy as the main character Clara. I'm sure kids of a certain age will love it though but adults will definitely not.

Set six years after the events of Wreck it Ralph, Ralph and Vanellope seem to enjoy their lives within their arcade games of Fix it Felix Jr and Sugar Rush. Things go wrong when the Sugar Rush game becomes unplugged when an accident causes the real world steering wheel to break. Though the owner of the arcade Litwak finally gets a Wifi router, he can't find a replacement part and thinks it's time to get rid of the Sugar Rush machine. Ralph and Vanellope decide that they can go to the Internet to find that replacement part.
This was such an awesome sequel with Ralph and Vanellope exploring the Internet. Various buildings representing famous websites like Amazon, Instagram, IMDB, and many more feature in the landscape. Not only does this movie poke fun at the various online companies, but they even go after stuff I wasn't expecting Disney to do such as popup ads, spam, violent games, dumb videos, and even the dark web are given a chance and each get a clever joke. I loved the part when Vanellope enters the Oh My Disney website and interacts with all the Disney movie princesses. I also liked the character of Shank who is the top driver in the Slaughter Race game. In the end, Ralph Breaks the Internet is a very good follow-up to its predecessor, even though there's a little too much going on at times. Ralph and Vanellope each have new character arcs and obstacles to cross throughout the course of this movie. Go watch it!

A good little horror/sci-fi about a young girl Stephanie left alone in her home after her parents have fled because an unknown entity is attacking the house from the woods outside. A lot of the movie is of Stephanie alone in her home and Shree Crooks carries the movie very well on her own. I did find it interesting though that some have compared this movie to the anime Elfen Lied and I kinda agree that there are some similarities such as the invisible long black arms (named vectors in the anime) that Stephanie seems to possess. Despite it being labelled as a horror, there is no gore in the movie. I think the less you know before watching the movie the better it will be for you. Overall, it was an entertaining low budget movie with a nice twist at the end.

A fascinating movie based on a true story revolving around the notorious 1950's Gordon Lonsdale spy case, better known as the 'Portland Spy Ring' in Britain. Harry Houghton works at a top secret British naval facility. He starts to steal files from a safe so that the Soviets can learn all the British secrets about advanced submarine warfare for cash. His co-worker and girlfriend helps him in doing this. Genuine locations in the real life case was used in the movie and the methods used to find out what Houghton was up to is great to see. Bernard Lee better known as M in the Bond movies plays the treacherous Houghton. There are not many people except those of a certain age that know about this famous spy case so give this movie a whirl to see how the story pans out. You won't be disappointed

A babysitter is summoned to watch over a family's son and house whilst the parents go out. The son is hoping to get to "second base" with the babysitter, but his plans are paused as the house is seemingly invaded by a masked individual. Then things are turned on their head.
This is a cool and twisted Christmas horror. Reminiscent of Home Alone, it's a story involving mind games where the residents are at an advantage for knowing the layout of their abode, with a specific scene so self-aware that it actually admits to imitating that very movie. But, it's not all sweet like gingerbread men and candy canes. Writer/Director Chris Peckover seamlessly persuades the audience's minds into a false sense of security, luring them down the route of obviousness. The many well executed twists and turns that take place caught me off guard. Olivia DeJonge and Levi Miller give fantastic performances, particularly the latter who is clearly enjoying his role. Overall this was a great movie and it is bound to be a future Christmas cult classic.

Two young siblings Finn & Derval Dove escape from their nasty stepfather in Liverpool and hitch a ride on a ferry to Ireland where they hope to reach their kindly grandmother in Galway. Unfortunately their uncle Hawk Dove who is a master of disguises is also on their trail as he gets a part of their inheritance. What follows is a series of cat and mouse hijinks as the kids do their best to evade the police and their relative.
You'd think this was a Disney kids movie but it isn't, it's a British production. It's a charming movie with great performances from the cast, a good soundtrack and lovely shots of the Irish countryside. Ron Moody is brilliantly funny and sometimes frightening with his disguises and different characters. Jack Wild is wonderful as the compassionate loving older brother who only wants to protect his little sister. It's a nice family movie with a happy ending.

This movie is about a wealthy of sorts man named Brandon living in NYC. He is a sex addict and his addiction knows no bounds. His estranged sister Sissy has also just dropped by his apartment for an extended stay, making things all the worse.
The plot may not sound like much, because there really is not all that much to it storywise. Shame is more of a portrait of a man struggling with his inner demons than it is anything else and the boundaries and limits of his addiction. Director Steve McQueen does not shy away from hard truths, and does not even try to mask the explicit nature of some of the sexual acts. Seeing how far Brandon will go to satisfy and suppress himself is simply harrowing. McQueen does not give out simple answers for what causes Brandon's addiction, or even the reasoning behind the troubled and strained relationship between Brandon and his sister Sissy. Michael Fassbender is stunning as Brandon, magnetising the audience from the beginning all the way to the end. Carey Mulligan is also wonderful as Sissy, a young woman with an infinite desire to be loved. Shame is a very well done movie, but one that will divide audiences. If you're up for it, give it a go.

One of the last works of the great Willis O'Brien who brought the original King Kong to life. It's basically similar to The Beast From 50,000 Fathoms as atomic tests in the oceans brings back a massive radiation spouting paleosaur which wreaks havoc on London. A couple of scientists work on creating a weapon that can destroy the beast. The story keeps the beast under wraps until the second half of the movie. The stop motion effects isn't too bad but compared to what Ray Harryhausen was doing at the time it does look cheap. The performances by the cast are fine led by Gene Evans and Andre Morell. The big ending to the movie feels rushed and a bit anti-climatic to be honest. I still enjoyed this monster movie though.

A wonderfully British movie that captures the loss of a loved one more personally and less dramatically than Ghost. Here, we see a woman who cannot let go, who is so paralysed with grief she cannot live the life left to her. The man she lost untimely loves her so dearly he returns, not to take up where they left off but to guide her back into life. Life he can never have again. Julie Stevenson is excellent as the grieving widow Nina. Her tears and grief are very realistic and you truly feel her desperation. Yet, though there is sadness and even the ending is bitter-sweet, you don't leave feeling depressed and there are laughs along the way. Alan Rickman is also brilliant as the returning phantom husband who invites his ghostly pals to come back to his house to watch videos!! There's an underlying message in the story that we can all move on and live after the death of a loved one..but for some it's harder. Definitely one to check out.
