Frank Capra's knack for getting the best out of James Stewart and Jean Arthur is demonstrated here with both stars giving superb performances. As a bumbling, naive Senator who is a lamb thrown to the wolves in Washington, Stewart does a fabulous job although there are moments when his bumbling awkwardness looks a bit staged. Jean Arthur is a natural for the role of the wise secretary who at first scorns his innocent ways but soon comes to realise he's the real thing. As usual in a Capra movie, you have to be willing to forgive some obvious plot contrivances or overall schmaltz. The ending (when it finally comes after a long time) is rather abrupt as though the director suddenly realised he'd gone overtime on the story! This is James Stewart at his peak here and it's a movie not to be missed. A true classic.

This terrific movie has an outstanding performance by Beryl Reid as an ageing lesbian actress June whose character George in a soap opera is about to axed. She takes out her frustrations on her lover Childie played by Susannah York. Beryl Reid's non-stop barrage of put-downs, insults, wisecracks and other hateful remarks are acidly hilarious. Her world is about to teeter over the edge when a female BBC production head sets her eyes on snatching Childie away from her. Although the movie does go on for half an hour too long, it held my attention from start to finish. There are plenty of location shots from around London in the late 60's. It was quite a groundbreaking movie at the time for it's graphic lesbian sex scene but now it's rather tame. All in all, thanks to Beryl Reid's brilliant acting, this is a great movie to watch and see a person disintegrate before the viewer's very eyes.

aka Naked Fury. This short British crime b-movie is about a bungled heist in which a night watchman is shot and subsequently dies whilst his daughter is held hostage in a crumbling and dangerous warehouse that's ready to be demolished with the thieves. It is quite a tedious movie to be honest. To be fair the story is fairly brisk but it just isn't interesting enough even if there are some twists near the end. It's obvious that the thieves are going to fall out before the movie finishes. The cast, with the exception of a youthful Kenneth Cope who would go on to Randall & Hopkirk, are largely unknowns. A waste of an hour.

A fairly loose adaptation of Jonathan Swift's work which is saved by Ray Harryhausen's special effects. Be it the giant and tiny people sequences or the perils that come to Gulliver and his wife courtesy of an alligator and a squirrel, it's these that most will find interesting. The story has been given a romantic edge to corner the family market. The movie is very colourful but somehow there were times when I was bored watching as it dragged. Kerwin Mathews gives a good performance as Gulliver and the supporting cast are fine. I'm sure kids will love this movie more than adults though.

On a dark and stormy night, 11 strangers have to take refuge in an isolated motel when a rainstorm turns into a monsoon. One by one they begin to be killed...but by who and for what reason?
I didn't know what to expect from this movie so I was happy by how good it really was. Such an imaginative mystery storyline. By the first 10 or 20 minutes you get this feeling that the entire movie is going to be nonstop suspense that gives you a feeling as if you were the character but instead of you making the decisions you are being forced into them. There are numerous red herrings to make you think and the twists that are thrown in took me by surprise. Brilliant acting by John Cusack and Amanda Peet with the rest of the cast which includes Ray Liotta performing well. The movie had me on the edge of my seat and held my interest from start to finish. I loved it.

A delightful comedy by the men behind the Carry On movies - Peter Rogers and Gerald Thomas. Michael Craig plays Jack Hopkins, an aircraft designer who's hobby is traction engines. An American airline executive comes to the UK to buy new aircraft and it's a two horse race between Hopkins' design and another by a rival company called the Gryphon. Unfortunately the relationship between Hopkins and the American doesn't get off to a good start when the American's car crashes into Hopkins' pride and joy called The Iron Maiden.
I was surprised by how good this gentle comedy was. The movie may not be as well known or liked as Genevieve or The Titfield Thunderbolt but it's got it's own charm to it with a nice story. It hasn't got any of the smut that's associated with the Carry On movies either. As this is a transport movie, there are many classic vehicles (planes/cars/traction engines) of the time seen. The English countryside in Summer has never looked better. The traction engine The Iron Maiden is still around to this day and can be seen in various steam rallies around the UK. There's a great cast to this movie with two of the Carry On team in Jim Dale and Joan Sims getting cameo roles. All in all, this is a wonderful family comedy which I really enjoyed. One to seek out for sure.

Probably the worst movie in the Purge franchise. It's a prequel story about the very first purge that takes place on Staten Island. This is basically a race movie - the good black people of a neighbourhood taking on the evil white militias that come to their place to take them all out. What once was a franchise about surviving the night, now has become a (semi)political movie about racism and racial divides. As to the cast, I've never heard about any of them apart from Marisa Tomei playing a role of the person that comes up with the idea of the purge. The movie stops short of terrible by its flowing plot, quick editing and visuals but I can't really recommend it for those that liked the previous entries in the franchise.

The story of the last weeks of Jesus Christ told out of the perspective of the first ever female apostle in Mary Magdalene. It is an interpretation of the Bible and the new found redemption of Mary Magdalene by the Vatican in 2016. Rooney Mara plays the title role and gives quite a solid performance. Joaquin Phoenix also has his moments as Jesus. The cinematography was fabulous. The whole look and feel felt accurate and it had a nice score. It did feel too modern often in the way the people talked and the way they gestured. Garth Davis as director has put together a new narrative of Jesus and Mary Magdalene which won't be to everyone's taste but I enjoyed it.

Peter Sellers plays a smarmy, self-absorbed star of a TV gourmet show who enjoys the swinging bachelor life, even as he hits his mid-40s. He meets up with Goldie Hawn, a hip sexually-liberated young girl who is 19 years old and the sparks as they say fly.
This movie started off well but after the first half hour it went downhill. It's not a comedy with that many laughs if I'm being honest and Hawn's character turns from somebody that's playing hard to get into a giggling annoyance. The whole section of the movie where the couple go to France to wine and dine is tedious to say the least. There is absolutely no chemistry between Hawn and Sellers characters. This is certainly not one of Seller's best works and I would say many of the movies he made during the late 60's to the early 70's are not up to scratch. Overall a rather misguided and lightly dull movie which I won't be bothering with again.

A trio of American journalists go to a small village in Poland to investigate the mysterious death of a young man. Once there, the villagers are unfriendly and warn them to leave. They see a mist that seems to hang over a forest near the village and go to take a look but come across a statue to a demon. The villagers arrive in the forest and capture the trio to take them to a shrine.
At first I thought this was going to be a slow moving and boring horror but thankfully the last third of the movie more than makes up for the other two thirds. The movie is fairly low budget, so don't go in looking for fantastic special effects. The acting is decent. There is hardly any gore at first but the red stuff comes thick and fast by the end. It is also fairly creepy at times as well. In the end, it was a good and entertaining horror but you need some patience before the gory payout.
