Androcles and the Lion
A poor comedy based on a minor George Bernard Shaw play set in Roman times. It's about a hen pecked Christian man Androcles who is out on a walk with his wife and they come across a lion with a thorn in his paw. Androcles takes the thorn out and discovers the lion's name is Tommy!! Soon after Androcles is captured with other Christians and sent to Rome to fight in the Roman Coliseum. This just isn't a funny movie even after having a decent start. There is hardly any genuine laughs here and the dialogue is horrible which makes it even more painful to watch. Harpo Marx was originally as the leading star but was replaced by Alan Young who would later gain fame as Wilbur Post in Mr Ed. A young and beautiful Jean Simmons plays his co-star. The cast is terribly wasted on a pathetic script and trying their hardest to produce useless corny humour - seeing Androcles dancing with a man in a lion costume is perhaps the dumbest thing you'll see in this movie. Not good at all.

The Last Valley
Savaged by critics upon it's release, this movie is now touted as a lost gem that is never shown on TV these days. It is set in Germany during the Thirty Years War (1618 to 1648) in which Catholics and Protestants fought one another. Omar Sharif plays a wanderer on the run when he stumbles into a beautiful valley with a small village untouched by the conflict. Michael Caine and his band of mercenaries also discover the valley and instead of raping and pillaging the place they decide to stay until after the winter there and integrate themselves with the villagers. What people will notice most from this movie is Caine's ridiculous German accent and the stunning location of the valley which was shot in Austria and not Germany. The beautiful soundtrack by John Barry is worth mentioning as well. Michael Caine and Omar Sharif are solid in their roles. There are a couple of good action sequences which move the plot along with also a nasty witchcraft burning scene. I have no idea why this movie was criticised so much as it has a well written story. Give it a go and I'm sure you'll enjoy it too.

Game of Assassins
5 strangers awaken in an ancient dungeon with no memory of how they got there but in order to escape the place they have to team up and beat the challenges that lie ahead. This is similar to Saw with bloodletting, mysterious puzzles to solve but obviously on a cheaper budget. The cast is led by sexy Bai Ling who looks incredible for her age. Unfortunately the climax is a bit of a let down. If you've got nothing better to do, I suppose this movie is fine. It's a reasonable if instantly forgettable time filler.

Black Tide
Two swimmers (one male, one female) are attempting to swim the English Channel to France but during their attempt a thick fog drops down and the female disappears. Her body is discovered and drowning is the verdict by the police but her male co-swimmer is convinced that she was murdered having heard a speedboat close by when the fog seperated them. He starts to investigate and comes too close to the killer. A short and briskly paced murder mystery with lovely location shots of Dover in the late 50's. Despite the story being somewhat predictable, it definitely keeps the viewers interest. Although it's a British movie, it has 2 Americans as the leading stars in John Ireland and Sheldon Lawrence. Nice to see Dad's Army star Arthur Lowe in a small role as a garage owner. The story builds to a great and exciting climax. All in all, it was a pretty entertaining thriller.

Pop Pirates (1984)
In this fast paced children's movie, a schoolboy reggae/ska group named The Pirates (similar to Musical Youth) is trying their luck out in a contest but the members don't know that their lead singer Paul is involved in a video piracy scheme run by his nasty uncle and gets one of the others in danger. This is one of the later Children's Film Foundation movies from the mid 80's which were shown on BBC1 usually on a Friday afternoon and is a fun entertaining ride. It features a cameo role for Roger Daltrey as a producer and also Bill Treacher who would go on to play Arthur Fowler in Eastenders. Shot on location in and around Brighton, it has a very Summery feel about it. There are thrills to be had as one band member is kidnapped and locked inside an old barge whilst the baddies carry on with their business of copying music video tapes to sell on. The story's conclusion is rather rushed I felt. It's not the best CFF movie I've seen but then again this made was in the dying days of the company. Still worth a watch though.

My Brother Loves Me Too Much
A truly awful Japanese teen comedy about a high school girl who has confessed her love 12 times to boys in the past but has been rejected by them all. Now she's got several boys chasing after her which includes her adopted brother and her teacher. Comedy movies like this should go straight to the bin as it is so bad. It's so unfunny and the characters are written badly. It's terrible to have an incest like plot going on with also a creepy teacher trying his best to seduce a young girl. I found it very hard to watch all of this movie. Most of the male characters are portrayed as preening, effeminate pretty-boys but this type of role has been popular over in Japan for a long time. A total waste of a movie with a throwaway plot. Utter garbage.

March Comes in Like a Lion 2
The concluding part in the fantastic double bill about a young Shogi player named Kuriyama - a loner who finds friendship and the meaning of family with a trio of kind sisters. There is more drama here than in the first movie as one of the Kawamoto sisters Hina is bullied at school, the sudden reappearance of their unwelcome father and Kiriyama's slump in form at shogi. Once more it faithfully follows the main plotlines in what I saw in the 2nd season of the anime and the characters in live form are spot on. The cast that's been picked to bring these characters to life have been nothing short of brilliant. It builds to a very satisfying conclusion as Kiriyama's bonds with the Kawamoto's is strengthened even more and he triumphs in one of the biggest shogi matches of his life. One of the best manga/anime adaptations I've seen. It was a joy to watch.

Girl Flu. (2016)
A young girl of 12 nicknamed Bird by her stoner mother is embarrassed during her school picnic in front of her classmates when she has her first menstrual cycle. Confused at what has has happened, she tries to ask her mother for help but she is out of her head most of the time so Bird has to figure out and deal with this new chapter in her life for herself. It's not a special movie at all but Girl Flu has a nice coming of age story to tell. Jade Pettyjohn delivers a great performance as the lead character Bird with Katee Sackhoff as her mother. She is for a lot of the time in various stages of undress. The movie does have some predictable moments but there is some sparkling dialogue to be had between mother and daughter. The plot also touches on being bullied and first love. This movie will be very relatable for girls of Bird's age that are going through the same thing and trying to find their way in the world. Overall the movie is charming, sometimes funny and also a little bit weird.

Gerald Thomas is most famous for directing the Carry On movies but before that he also directed some 'b' movies and this is one of them. Based on a play by Arthur Hailey, it tells the story of a little boy who accidentally gets trapped in a Toronto bank vault and of the numerous attempts to rescue him. Robert Beatty heads the cast, which features a young Sean Connery as one of the would-be rescuers. It's a surprisingly good and tense movie with time ticking down as with the oxygen rapidly running out inside the vault the boy could be dead by the time the rescuers break in. For a movie with a simple plot, it's gripping stuff and really gets you involved. If you've 75 mins to spare, you can't go wrong with this movie.

Hirugao
The continuation of the Japanese drama series which follows 2 people that have cheated on their respective partners with each other. Set 3 years after the events of the drama, Sawa who has lost everything including her friends and family has moved to a seaside town to rebuild her life and to try and forget about Kitano by working in a restaurant. A flyer posted in her mailbox advertises a talk about fireflies that Kitano is doing very close to where she lives. After meeting each other, they find that their old feelings come back and Kitano leaves his wife for Sawa. Things seem to be settling down for the pair until she confesses what she has done to a colleague in the restaurant which turns everybody in the place against her. She also thinks that Kitano might be sneaking away on some days to be with his wife. I never watched the drama series of Hirugao so I thought I'd be lost with this movie but it didn't make a difference. The story can easily be picked up if you've never seen the drama. The movie is basically about Sawa's inability to move on properly with her life despite moving somewhere new and Kitano not really sure if he wants to dump his wife for good or not. The most interesting character in the movie is Kitano's wife Noriko who looks normal on the outside but madness and paranoia is starting to take over. Her actions near the end of the movie prompt a tragedy. This is a nice movie with a message that illicit love cannot succeed. There is always a price to pay. Aya Ueto, Ayumi Ito and Takumi Saito deliver solid performances and the cinematography of capturing the sun-baked seaside town of Mihama in all of it's Summer glory is great.
