Monster Hunt
This movie broke the box office record in China so I was curious to find out why that was the case. I shouldn't have bothered as this is an absolutely terrible movie. It doesn't know whether to be serious or silly. It is just cringe-worthy all the way through. Trying to blend as many genres as possible, the story is about childish looking monsters disguising themselves as humans in order to fit into our world. The CGI animation is poor and looks cheap. I'm trying my best to find something positive to say about this movie and I just can't find any! This movie is somehow boring, sappy and stupid at the same time. The plot is inconsistent, the characters are flat, and the baby monster is simply annoying. The movie is fine for little kids who will find it funny no doubt but otherwise I can't recommend this to anybody.

The Young Victoria

7/10

The Young Victoria
There may be a TV series about Queen Victoria's early life these days but this movie was made years before it. It chronicles Victoria's ascent to the throne and her romance with Prince Albert. This movie basically tells the story of series 1 of the TV series although in much shorter form. Emily Blunt portrays Victoria much better than Jenna Coleman with Rupert Friend doing very well as Albert along with Miranda Richardson as the Queen's scheming mother. The sets and costumes of the period is fantastic. It's no surprise that the person who wrote this movie is the brains behind Downton Abbey - Julian Fellowes. If you're familiar with the TV series, it's worth checking this out just to see the differences between the two.

A man who works as a movie extra gets a job as a spy and is sent to a remote ski cabin in the Alps to investigate strange happenings there. It turns out there is some Nazi gold hidden underneath it and there are others after it too. Who will get their hands on it? The main problem with this movie is nothing of interest happens until the final 20 mins. Up until then it's just a lot of talking and people being suspicious about each other. There are also people talking in Italian in some scenes with no subtitles to tell you what they're going on about. Despite the plodding tale, there are some good performances from notably Dennis Price and Robert Newton. This should have been a better movie than what it turned out to be.

Life in Danger
A child murderer breaks out of an asylum and is on the run from the police. The locals of a small village find out that he could be in their area and decide to take the law into their own hands to find him. An unexpected gem of a movie which is virtually unknown here in the UK. Derren Nesbitt is the man who hides out in a farm barn loft with a teenage girl who falls for him and a young impressionable lad who is sworn to secrecy even to his own parents that he is hiding there. I wasn't expecting a big twist at the climax which took me completely by surprise. A nice touch by the filmmakers. It's a very tense movie which grows throughout the story. Well worth watching.

Doraemon: Great Adventure in the Antarctic Kachi Kochi (2017)
The 37th Doraemon movie finds Japan's favourite robot cat transporting Nobita and his friends to the Antarctic when they want to escape the Summer heat. Finding a golden ring buried in an iceberg and discovering it was put there 10,000 years ago, Doraemon and his friends travel back in time to find it's owner. This is another great Doraemon adventure that kids and adults can enjoy. It has a story involving many time jumps in order to stop another ice age from taking place on Earth. Doraemon and his friends are all very likeable and watching this movie unleashes the inner kid inside of you. It has plenty of thrills with a giant tentacled monster threatening the gang and also a fake Doraemon trying to stir things up. It's all gentle stuff but very entertaining. You can't go wrong with Doraemon movies.

Battle of the Sexes
This tells the true story of a Billie Jean King's historic woman-on-man exhibition tennis match with hustling aging champion Bobby Riggs that took place in September 1973. Or rather, its several stories. Building up to that feminism vs. chauvinism contest are each of the competitors' tales. Billie Jean is in a drama about discovering one's sexuality while having the fate of women's tennis on her shoulders. Bobby is in a hustler comedy indulging in all sorts of shenanigans to distract himself from accepting he's a gambling addict. But make no mistake, it's her story more than his which is perhaps part of the point. One of the things the movie does well is showing the casual sexism of the early 70's and the tennis sequences, of course, are very well done. Emma Stone and Steve Carrell are brilliant as the two tennis stars. A well-acted and entertaining biopic.

Harmonium
A family man Toshio running a metal shop finds an old acqauitance Yasaka showing up on his doorstep one day. Yasaka has been released from prison and wants a favour from his friend. The well mannered man is accepted in the family though the wife isn't too pleased why her husband is being too kind to his friend. There are dark secrets between the two men which are revealed during the course of the movie. What a movie with a depressing ending! The movie has two parts to it with a time jump of 8 years happening between them. The first part of the story has a long and lasting impact for Toshio's family which still reverberates years later for them. You're aware that something bad is going to happen as Yasaka begins to integrate himself more into Toshio's family and he feels resentment towards Toshio which the viewer finds out why later. Tadanobu Asano is always great at playing dark characters and here he excels again in this role. Director Kรดji Fukada keeps the atmosphere of the movie dark and brooding. The ending is a bit of a downer but this is just to show that Yasaka's revenge has finally been completed. Overall a very good movie with brilliant performances from the cast.

The Diary of a Teenage Girl
Set in San Francisco during the 1970's, the story centres on Minnie, a 15-year old aspiring cartoonist who in the wake of her sexuality begins a relationship with her mother's boyfriend. Quite an honest coming of age drama about a teenage girl who longs for love and acceptance. It is unflinching in it's depiction of sex and some viewers might find it disturbing to see a man having sex with such a young girl. Even though I liked Bel Powley in the lead role, I did think she looked too old to play a 15 year old. Kristen Wiig is great as Minnie's mother. The movie is pretty heavy going stuff at times, after all, everything to a 15 year old is dramatic, but throughout, there is an air of whimsy, keeping the movie from becoming depressing and too deep. All in all, it's a pretty fascinating look into a the mind and random thoughts of a girl's sexual awakening.
