Mausoleum
This is another imbecile and over-the-top cheesy 80's horror flick about demonic possession with an awfully bad script and hilarious special effects. It's about a young woman Susan suffering from a curse that killed her mother and it seems that Susan is going down the same path. Her eyes glow a darker shade of green when she's possessed and whatever poor soul she's focusing on dies a very unpleasant death. There's absolutely no logic or suspense in the script and the only thing keeping it from being an absolute stinker is the imaginative deaths that take place. I did think that it would improve for the finale but unfortunately it doesn't. It's not really worth watching as there are far better demonic possession movies around.

Jungle
Based on a true story, it follows 3 friends who go on a trek in the South American jungle with a suspicious guide to find a supposed Indian tribe but things go awry when their raft capsizes on a river. On land, 2 of the men decide to walk and find civilisation whilst the other 2 build another raft and go downriver but again problems occur when both men go overboard. Yossi finds himself alone with no help and has to navigate through the deep jungle and the deadly creatures that inhabit the area and try and find his friend or some kind of help. What an incredible story of survival this is with a great performance by Daniel Radcliffe. The story has it's mix of suspense and danger as Yoshii goes to hell and back but never gives up in the hope that somebody will come across and rescue him. The movie starts out quite slow but once Radcliffe's character Yossi is alone after being pushed down a mighty river the story comes into it's own and you find yourself willing Yossi along and praying for his rescue. The cinematography is fantastic with the lush green jungle scenes really standing out. The movie kept me glued right to the very end. I think this was one of Daniel Radcliffe's best performance of his career. Overall, it's quite a gripping survival adventure story and if you love these kind of movies I'm sure this one will keep you hooked as well.

It Comes at Night
This movie has been marketed as a horror but there isn't any horror at all here. It's more of a psychological movie in which an unknown illness has wiped out a large percentage of the population. A family have locked themselves inside their house out in the middle of some woods. Another family is invited to stay with them but soon deep distrust and paranoia about picking up a disease set in. This is a movie that shows human nature's most basic instinct - survival and it is definitely a slow burner so anybody expecting some jump scares will be disappointed. I did expect some information about what happened to the human race but maybe the filmmakers thought that less is more was better. In the end, it wasn't that bad of a movie. It kept my interest to the end.

Jasper Jones
Set during the late 60's in a small Australian town, a young lad named Charlie is approached by his aboriginal friend Jasper who says he has found his girlfriend murdered and hanging from a tree. The pair set to find who did it and why before the authorities do. The following days are crucial for both of them as the whole town is terrified by the incident. A nice coming of age movie with a convincing performance by Levi Miller as Charlie who not only has to find a murderer but sort out his family's troubles as well. The story is well told and the elements of racial tension and bias is well crafted with Charlie's friend Geoffrey and his parents targeted by drunken racist idiots. Toni Collete as Charlie's depressed mother and Hugo Weaving as the town's recluse (who might be the girl's killer) give the story emotional depth. There's a bit of everything in this movie: a touch of mystery, a pinch of comedy mixed in with a bit of family drama. An entertaining movie.

She Knows Y
Pint sized Northern comedienne Hylda Baker became famous in the late 60's for her sitcom Nearest & Dearest but this movie was done a couple of years before she would hit the big time on TV although she was well known on stage at the time. Here, Hylda plays the mother of a bright lad who is accused of making a girl pregnant with her parents trying to force him into marrying or it'll all go to court. It's a decent enough comedy with some good luaghs - it's not her best work though. Hylda played the woman who doesn't suffer fools gladly very well and she's paired up with Cyril Smith as her husband in this movie. Hylda was a master of playing around with words that she could make sound funny (as she does here) and the title of the movie is one of her famous catchphrases. This was a nice little comedy with Hylda Baker on good form. Good to watch if you like her work.

Pitch Perfect 3
The final Pitch Perfect movie might be a little weak plot-wise but if you're after some great music then watch this. The story sees the Bellas reuniting for a USO tour in Europe but Fat Amy's dad returns and has an ulterior motive for his reunion with his daughter. All of the crew come back with Beca and Fat Amy leading the way, add some competition in the form of a lean mean girl band, a rock/country group and put them slap bang on a selection of US naval bases and you have a fun light-hearted movie which is guaranteed to keep your feet tapping throughout. I loved the songs that were selected in the movie. All in all, a wonderful conclusion to what has been a great trilogy.

Tomb Raider
This is the new remake of the Tomb Raider franchise and a new actress to fill the boots of the video game heroine. The movie takes you on Lara Croft's first adventure: to find her missing father and to solve the mystery of the Death Queen Himiko. This movie stands well on its own as a solid action thriller. Alicia Vikander's commitment to the role shows really well. The element of mystery regarding Queen Himiko is also handled quite well and the action sequences are exciting and thrilling. Of course the movie also has its share of flaws, such as a weak villain and a general lack of emotional investment. This could be attributed to the quick pacing of the movie, which covers a lot of ground in terms of Lara Croft's development as a character. Overall, this movie is definitely worth a watch for its action sequences and Alicia Vikander's performance as Lara Croft.

The Commuter
If you've seen one Liam Neeson actioner, you've probably seen them all so you're not going to see anything new here. Neeson plays an unsuspecting train commuter who is drawn into a criminal conspiracy which could kill everyone on-board. It's a familiar sounding plot, but it's one that Neeson excels in, in fact, he may be too good at it by now! Despite that, it's still a fun ride which you'll probably enjoy much more than you'd be willing to admit.

The History of Mr. Polly
I wasn't aware that HG Wells made books on social commentary and this movie is based on one of them. It's about a man named Alfred Polly who inherits a load of money after his father's death. He opens a shop and marries a woman but as the viewer sees years later he is unhappy and his abusive wife likes to belittle him. He decides the only way out is burn the shop down and kill himself. Although there's been many praise for this movie, I didn't think it was that good. John Mills is fine as the eternal dreamer who only wants a quiet life but there was nothing in it for me to care about the man. I felt the story was also dull and aimless in many places. The light comedy scenes are done well though. Overall, it might interest HG Wells or John Mills fans but sadly this movie is just average for me.

The Signal

The Signal
An indie sci-fi thriller about three MIT students, on a road trip, who decide to chase down an infamous hacker and find something much more nightmarish. The movie is full of big ideas, that aren't fully explained at all; most of the movie is left up to viewer interpretation. I respect movies like that but this one just isn't quite satisfying enough. It's full of a lot of routine stylistic clichรฉs but they are pretty cool to look at. For a $4 million budgeted movie it sure does looks amazing. The acting is decent enough and the story is intriguing. It's nowhere near the quality of a great sci-fi flick but it is a lot of fun.

Cult of Chucky
I wouldn't say this is the greatest entry in the Chucky franchise (the 7th one so far). The story is a total mess and rather boring. It does thankfully pick up right near the end with some nice inventive and gruesome deaths. It also has some good jokes and the characters of Fiona Dourif and Alex Vincent are fine. Brad Douriff as always is fun to listen to as Chucky. You might enjoy it if you're a die hard Chucky fan, but if you're not, it's best to start with one of the other entries.
