A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square
This was David Niven's last movie before his death. Pinky Green is an American criminal released from prison in London and determined to go on the straight and narrow by getting a job as an electrician in a bank of all places. Unfortunately the boss of a gang of hoodlums named Ivan sees this as an opportunity to rob the place and forces Pinky to help him out. This movie is an almost forgotten gem from 1979 which although in essence a comedy it was based on one of the UK's biggest ever bank heists. It was directed by Gerald Thomas, best known for the Carry On movies. It has an engaging story and it moves along at a good pace. I wish the movie didn't have a stupid Benny Hill like music throughout. I'd never heard of Richard Jordan before but he does well in the leading role of Pinky Green. David Niven as always is fabulous and plays the role with his usual charm. Elke Sommers and 70's hearthrob Oliver Tobias provide supporting roles to the pair. For a bank heist movie, there is no violence, blood or even a car chase through the streets of London. This movie just gives you a well written story that is well acted, well directed and well photographed! I wasn't expecting much from this movie but I really enjoyed it.

The Greatest Showman
A simply fantastic musical with a tremendous feel-good factor and a soundtrack to die for with songs that are very catchy and stay in your head. The story is loosely based on the life of P.T Barnum who was a showman that loved entertaining people. Everything from the incredible toe-tapping music, awesome choreography to the dream filled storyline was great. I was totally immersed in it all. Hugh Jackman is perfect in the leading role of Barnum with a supporting cast that compliments him nicely. This movie is an uplifting, joyous experience that we all need now and again in our lives. Take a look at it. Guaranteed to make you smile by the end. Recommended.

Re: Born
A very well made Japanese action movie in which an ex-specialist soldier Toshiro is targeted by one of his old colleagues who sends hoards of assassins to eliminate him. Toshiro runs a small convenience store with his adopted daughter Sachi but when she is kidnapped, Toshiro realises he cannot run anymore but has to take on his old friend in order to finish things off. The story as such isn't that important as it's the close combat knife action sequences that takes centre stage in this movie. Most of these fights take on an almost balletic display. There is one particular 30 minute segment where Toshiro and 2 accomplices are making their way up a tree ridden hill facing a seemingly innumerable amount of enemies which will leave you breathless. Tak Sakaguchi is incredible as Toshiro and his distinctive pre-fight shoulder movements lets the viewer know the enemy is in for a lot of pain and suffering. If you want a movie with a clear cohesive plot and interesting dialogue then this won't be for you but if you're after action and blood in bucketloads then you'll love it.

The Mailbag Robbery
A crime story that starts out well enough but quickly becomes rather dull. The setup is great - a group of criminals steal bagfuls of old used money from the mail train and all this is done without any dialogue for the first 15 to 20 mins. The group is then shown celebrating their heist and living it up in an unknown foreign beach resort. The movie then goes backwards in time to how they came to plan for the robbery and the various setbacks that occur before they succeed. Most of the movie takes place in one train carriage with a lot of time wasting to fill the story out. There isn't anything in the way of thrills and peril that takes place. The cast led by American actor Lee Patterson is fine though none of them stand out in any way. As the movie wore on, my interested in the story waned and I was glad when it ended. A bit of a wasted opportunity I thought and this movie should have been a lot more exciting.

This is a low budget Western about a young man that wants to buy some land in the wilderness of British Columbia but finds opposition in the form of Kiefer, the local boss of a small town and his cronies. Kiefer tries to scare off the man by beating him up but he refuses to give up and before you know it more trouble ensues. You're not going to find anything new in this saga of love, revenge and adventure. The plot has been done to death but I still liked it. There are some good set pieces and the acting by the cast with Morgan Stevens in the leading role is decent enough. The cinematography showing the beauty of the snow clad mountains and wilderness is fantastic. This movie passed a good 90 mins for myself and I've no regrets watching it. It's a long forgotten movie which I'm glad I checked out.

Mukoku
An interesting Japanese movie about a former kendo prodigy Kengo now an alcoholic who killed his father with a kendo stick via a blow to the head when he was growing up. Now as an adult, he has given up on life and wastes his time getting drunk daily. It takes an angry and troubled teenage boy in Toru Hada who is talented in kendo to bring him back to that world again in order to move on from the tragedy that occurred in the past. Whilst the movie does drag at times, I found the build up to the inevitable showdown between Toru, the cocky teen kendo student and Kengo who despite being drunk for the majority of the time can still show how good he is with a kendo stick to be great. Kengo can see his dead father's dark and controlling streak in the young Toru and so naturally wants to beat him at kendo. The self destructive Kengo played by Go Ayano isn't a character you'll warm up to. Nijirō Murakami as Toru is ALSO good as another troubled soul who is bullied by his peers and lashes out at every opportunity given. When you get 2 characters like these squaring up against each other you'll expect nothing less than total violence. I enjoyed this modern take on the traditional ‘jidaigeki’ movie.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
A fantastic step up from the previous movie with thrills aplenty which shows the franchise is well and truly alive. We all know what to expect from this franchise. Fantastic visuals, engaging characters and some excitement plus more. The story subtly deals with issues such as animal cruelty and of humans destroying the planet. The part of the movie which shows Isla Nublar being destroyed by a volcano is awesome to watch. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are charming on screen as always, but there is hardly any character development between them. Daniella Pineda and Justice Smith are good supporting characters that provide comic relief. Isabella Sermon is adorable in her debut role as Maisie Lockwood and does a terrific job. The remaining actors who played the villains are amicable but are easily forgettable, since they are very clichéd and don't bring anything new to the screen. The ending sets the scene for Part 3 which I cannot wait for. Overall, a brilliant movie for all the family.

After an earthquake, the residents of a small town start acting crazy. Quite a good disturbing little horror movie which builds up the story nice and slow. It doesn't try to do too much right away and instead it gradually reels the viewer in to the terror that's unfolding in the town. The actions of the sick townspeople are believable and creepy (such as the Sheriff killing a young boy with a machine gun and the snapping back finger scene). And some of the photography is really good, giving the viewer some striking images. It's then discovered that an unknown chemical has spilled into the town's milk supply. The ending is very downbeat. The movie might not be a masterpiece and the budget may be small but I liked it. The great cast which includes Bill Paxton do a good job. Impulse is a little seen 80's horror but it deserves to be seen more by people.

Here Come the Huggetts
A gentle British post war comedy centering on the Huggett family that were first shown in the movie Holiday Camp. The plot has the family getting their first ever telephone and an unwelcome visitor in their female cousin Di who causes chaos wherever she goes. Standing out head and shoulders from the regulars is a pre-blonde Diana Dors who uses her sex appeal to great use on the men! The Huggett family are perfectly cast from Jack Warner as the head of the household to Kathleen Harrison as the mother who is afraid that her new telephone might go off like a bomb! The youngest daughter in future pop star Petula Clark gets to show off her vocals as well. The script for the movie was partly written by Peter Rogers who would go on in making the Carry On movies. The Huggetts were incredibly popular in their time and 2 more sequels were released the following year. I found this quite entertaining and even though it's not a laugh out loud movie, there's enough to keep everybody amused here.

Androcles and the Lion
A poor comedy based on a minor George Bernard Shaw play set in Roman times. It's about a hen pecked Christian man Androcles who is out on a walk with his wife and they come across a lion with a thorn in his paw. Androcles takes the thorn out and discovers the lion's name is Tommy!! Soon after Androcles is captured with other Christians and sent to Rome to fight in the Roman Coliseum. This just isn't a funny movie even after having a decent start. There is hardly any genuine laughs here and the dialogue is horrible which makes it even more painful to watch. Harpo Marx was originally as the leading star but was replaced by Alan Young who would later gain fame as Wilbur Post in Mr Ed. A young and beautiful Jean Simmons plays his co-star. The cast is terribly wasted on a pathetic script and trying their hardest to produce useless corny humour - seeing Androcles dancing with a man in a lion costume is perhaps the dumbest thing you'll see in this movie. Not good at all.

The Last Valley
Savaged by critics upon it's release, this movie is now touted as a lost gem that is never shown on TV these days. It is set in Germany during the Thirty Years War (1618 to 1648) in which Catholics and Protestants fought one another. Omar Sharif plays a wanderer on the run when he stumbles into a beautiful valley with a small village untouched by the conflict. Michael Caine and his band of mercenaries also discover the valley and instead of raping and pillaging the place they decide to stay until after the winter there and integrate themselves with the villagers. What people will notice most from this movie is Caine's ridiculous German accent and the stunning location of the valley which was shot in Austria and not Germany. The beautiful soundtrack by John Barry is worth mentioning as well. Michael Caine and Omar Sharif are solid in their roles. There are a couple of good action sequences which move the plot along with also a nasty witchcraft burning scene. I have no idea why this movie was criticised so much as it has a well written story. Give it a go and I'm sure you'll enjoy it too.

Game of Assassins
5 strangers awaken in an ancient dungeon with no memory of how they got there but in order to escape the place they have to team up and beat the challenges that lie ahead. This is similar to Saw with bloodletting, mysterious puzzles to solve but obviously on a cheaper budget. The cast is led by sexy Bai Ling who looks incredible for her age. Unfortunately the climax is a bit of a let down. If you've got nothing better to do, I suppose this movie is fine. It's a reasonable if instantly forgettable time filler.

Two swimmers (one male, one female) are attempting to swim the English Channel to France but during their attempt a thick fog drops down and the female disappears. Her body is discovered and drowning is the verdict by the police but her male co-swimmer is convinced that she was murdered having heard a speedboat close by when the fog seperated them. He starts to investigate and comes too close to the killer. A short and briskly paced murder mystery with lovely location shots of Dover in the late 50's. Despite the story being somewhat predictable, it definitely keeps the viewers interest. Although it's a British movie, it has 2 Americans as the leading stars in John Ireland and Sheldon Lawrence. Nice to see Dad's Army star Arthur Lowe in a small role as a garage owner. The story builds to a great and exciting climax. All in all, it was a pretty entertaining thriller.
