The History of Mr. Polly
I wasn't aware that HG Wells made books on social commentary and this movie is based on one of them. It's about a man named Alfred Polly who inherits a load of money after his father's death. He opens a shop and marries a woman but as the viewer sees years later he is unhappy and his abusive wife likes to belittle him. He decides the only way out is burn the shop down and kill himself. Although there's been many praise for this movie, I didn't think it was that good. John Mills is fine as the eternal dreamer who only wants a quiet life but there was nothing in it for me to care about the man. I felt the story was also dull and aimless in many places. The light comedy scenes are done well though. Overall, it might interest HG Wells or John Mills fans but sadly this movie is just average for me.

The Signal
An indie sci-fi thriller about three MIT students, on a road trip, who decide to chase down an infamous hacker and find something much more nightmarish. The movie is full of big ideas, that aren't fully explained at all; most of the movie is left up to viewer interpretation. I respect movies like that but this one just isn't quite satisfying enough. It's full of a lot of routine stylistic clichรฉs but they are pretty cool to look at. For a $4 million budgeted movie it sure does looks amazing. The acting is decent enough and the story is intriguing. It's nowhere near the quality of a great sci-fi flick but it is a lot of fun.

Cult of Chucky
I wouldn't say this is the greatest entry in the Chucky franchise (the 7th one so far). The story is a total mess and rather boring. It does thankfully pick up right near the end with some nice inventive and gruesome deaths. It also has some good jokes and the characters of Fiona Dourif and Alex Vincent are fine. Brad Douriff as always is fun to listen to as Chucky. You might enjoy it if you're a die hard Chucky fan, but if you're not, it's best to start with one of the other entries.

Buffalo Soldiers
A great satire movie that shows what happens when soldiers with nothing to do but wait for war begin to think for themselves and exploit the system. Specialist Ray Elwood starts black marketeering, drug dealing and gun running and everything is going smoothly until the arrival of a new sergeant Robert E. Lee who quickly cottons on that Elwood is up to something shady. Joaquin Phoenix gives Elwood an understated charisma. He's a character you grow to like unlike Scott Glenn's steely Sergeant Lee who is very menacing and hiding something dark in his heart. The movie is critical of American values, specifically capitalism in the 80's and it takes no prisoners. There are numerous funny sequences such as a couple of drugged up soldiers in a tank destroying a gas station! Overall I really enjoyed this movie. It's a wild ride and it keeps you glued to the screen until the end.

Insidious: The Last Key
The 4th Insidious movie is basically more of the same that you've seen before in the previous entries. It's another prequel showing the backstory of demonologist Elise Rainier who was killed in the first movie. It delves deeper into her personal life and inevitably exploring her darkest fears. Despite the interesting premise showing Elise in her youth, the movie quickly loses its spark. There are fewer scares in this installment as well. It's obvious that the well has been run dry in the Insidious series and it's time to pull the plug. Lin Shaye is fine as Elise and she just about holds the entire movie together. I would only recommend this to those that have seen the other 3 entries in the series and want to find out more about Elise Rainier.

I, Tonya
This is director Craig Gillespie's take on the rise and fall of Tonya Harding, the US figure skating champion who threw away her career through her association with an abusive ex-husband who orchestrated an attack on her rival Nancy Kerrigan in January 1994. The story is told through a series of interviews with people in Tonya's life. Margot Robbie is good as Harding but the real star of the movie is Allison Janney, who steals the show as Tonya's mother from hell, LaVona Golden, a serial psychological abuser, who still manages to garner sympathy through her abrasively witty comments directed toward Tonya throughout her childhood and into adulthood. The first half of the movie was somewhat interesting but it became boring during the second half when the attack and aftermath of Kerrigan's attack took place. I wasn't keen on the various scenes of domestic violence taking place either. For a movie that's supposed to be a comedy I'm not sure how viewers could find them funny. Overall, after a promising start, the movie began to drag badly and my interest began to wane. A good cut of 30 mins would have benefited the story. It was just OK.

Black Panther
A vastly overrated and over hyped Marvel movie about an African superhero. Visually it looks great and the actors are decent in their roles but the storyline is dull and predictable. The pacing is all over the place. The movie starts off fast but comes to a halt halfway through. It goes on for far too long and outstays its welcome. There are a lot of cliches that ruin the movie as well. I couldn't connect with any of the characters and as such cared little for their success or failure. The action sequences are just OK. Superhero movies are meant to entertain but this movie didn't do that for me. I wouldn't waste money watching it if I'm being honest.

Paddington 2
An excellent sequel! Paddington is accused of stealing an old pop up book of London from an antiques shop that he wants to send to his aunt as a birthday present and is thrown into jail. The real villain though wants to use the book to find the long lost treasure of his relative. The movie is as funny and witty and as brilliantly animated as the first. The excellent cast from the first movie is also enhanced by a superb turn from Hugh Grant, who hasn't been as good as he is here in a long time. There is a touch of the pantomime villain to his performance, but it works splendidly and it fits his character perfectly. Brendan Gleeson is also excellent as the prison cook who loses his angry nature when he succumbs to Paddington's charms and talents in the kitchen. There are also loads of great jokes too, some pitched at younger children and some deliberately aimed at the more adult viewer. The story is full of laughs, thrills, action sequences, great characters and some wonderful animation. All in all it is great fun and very enjoyable for all the family. You'd be a fool to miss out on this treat.

Mary, Queen of Scots

Mary, Queen of Scots
A visually lush, beautifully-acted treatment of the compelling story of Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots. The movie provides an interesting depiction of the long-distance tension between Mary and her cousin, Elizabeth I of England, and the forces at work in the courts of continental Europe and of England and Scotland that made Mary's life hazardous from the moment she set foot on Scottish soil. Mary is played wonderfully by Vanessa Redgrave and Glenda Jackson is also superb as Queen Elizabeth I. She would reprise the role again in the BBC drama series Elizabeth R. There are some historical inaccuracies in the script in that both Queens never met in real life as they do in the movie. It's a good movie for somebody interested in the life of Scotland's last Queen.

The Levelling
A young woman returns to the family farm after many years, due to tragedy - her lone brother's apparent suicide - and grapples with a difficult situation and a combative relationship with her father. A good debut from writer director Hope Dickson Leache even though the storyline is depressingly bleak but it does capture the reality for farmers and how hard a life it for them these days. Ellie Kendrick is great as the young veterinary student who simply wants to know what drove her brother to suicide. Nobody says anything at first but the truth is revealed near the climax. David Troughton as the father also delivers a good performance. The bitter relationship between father and daughter is very well written. If you can handle a story that doesn't really have a happy ending then give it a go.

Brubaker
Robert Redford plays the title character who chooses to go into a prison farm as a convict to see at first hand how the farm is run and what he sees shocks him, which in turn rightly shocks the viewer as well. After learning all he needs to, he comes forward to take control of the farm and tries to put an end to the torture, corruption and dank depression that is rife at the farm. He has to deal with many obstacles along the way and it's the strength of the man that has the viewer firmly onside all through the movie. Redford is fantastic as Brubaker but there's also solid performances out of Yaphet Kotto and David Keith. A very well made prison movie.

Kenny
A fascinating documentary on the greatest player and manager for Liverpool football club. It is tinged with sadness though as it relives the tragedies that took place in Heysel and later at Hillsborough. Kenny Dalglish has given his life to get justice for the people that lost loved ones at the game at Hillsborough in 1989 and no wonder he is so respected and revered in the city of Liverpool and rightly so too. No one but Kenny himself will say how much the terrible event at Hillsborough affected him personally but as it is shown in this documentary his health suffered and he had to quit his job in 1991. Thankfully it is not all doom and gloom, the viewer is shown glimpses of his silky skills on the pitch and why so many have called him one of the best football players during the 70's and 80's. Kenny Dalglish was one of my heroes growing up and I still admire the man not just as a player/manager but as a human being. This documentary isn't just for Liverpool supporters. All those who love the beautiful game will enjoy it.
