A young woman returns to the family farm after many years, due to tragedy - her lone brother's apparent suicide - and grapples with a difficult situation and a combative relationship with her father.
A good debut from writer director Hope Dickson Leache even though the storyline is depressingly bleak but it does capture the reality for farmers and how hard a life it for them these days. Ellie Kendrick is great as the young veterinary student who simply wants to know what drove her brother to suicide. Nobody says anything at first but the truth is revealed near the climax. David Troughton as the father also delivers a good performance. The bitter relationship between father and daughter is very well written. If you can handle a story that doesn't really have a happy ending then give it a go.

Robert Redford plays the title character who chooses to go into a prison farm as a convict to see at first hand how the farm is run and what he sees shocks him, which in turn rightly shocks the viewer as well. After learning all he needs to, he comes forward to take control of the farm and tries to put an end to the torture, corruption and dank depression that is rife at the farm. He has to deal with many obstacles along the way and it's the strength of the man that has the viewer firmly onside all through the movie. Redford is fantastic as Brubaker but there's also solid performances out of Yaphet Kotto and David Keith. A very well made prison movie.

A fascinating documentary on the greatest player and manager for Liverpool football club. It is tinged with sadness though as it relives the tragedies that took place in Heysel and later at Hillsborough. Kenny Dalglish has given his life to get justice for the people that lost loved ones at the game at Hillsborough in 1989 and no wonder he is so respected and revered in the city of Liverpool and rightly so too. No one but Kenny himself will say how much the terrible event at Hillsborough affected him personally but as it is shown in this documentary his health suffered and he had to quit his job in 1991. Thankfully it is not all doom and gloom, the viewer is shown glimpses of his silky skills on the pitch and why so many have called him one of the best football players during the 70's and 80's. Kenny Dalglish was one of my heroes growing up and I still admire the man not just as a player/manager but as a human being. This documentary isn't just for Liverpool supporters. All those who love the beautiful game will enjoy it.

The spin off movie from the popular late 50's/early 60's sitcom The Larkins starring Britain's favourite battleaxe Peggy Mount as the matriarch of the dysfunctional Larkin family. The family are relocated from their usual urban abode to run a country pub but a greedy property developer wants the land around the pub to build a road and uses devious methods to try and get rid of the Larkins. The plot is wafer thin to be honest but the comedy is great and it's nice to see how life was in Britain during this time which would soon disappear. Carry on stalwart Charles Hawtrey has a bit part as a miserable employee in the Larkins pub and even Leslie Phillips gets a small role. Give it a viewing on a wet Sunday afternoon.

Businessman Richard Hammond sets his sight on inventing a new light-bulb in his factory. Trying out a prototype, Hammond gets caught in an explosion which permanently blinds him. His doctor tells him he will have to rely on his wife and friend. Returning to his country home, Hammond is horrified that things are different to what he remembers. Are the two secretly plotting to make him go mad and then kill him?
Yet another long forgotten British psychological thriller, this is a movie that makes the very best of a low budget thanks to a unique feeling storyline and plenty of suspense that builds up, particularly in the second half. The first half is a little slow and stately, but as a mystery this throws clues at you every now and then before finally letting rip towards the climax with an excellent twist. Great acting from the entire cast. An enjoyable little movie.

The first Bad Moms movie was funny so how would the sequel fare? Whilst it isn't quite as good, it still has enough laughs for everybody to enjoy. The trio of Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn are back and once again Hahn as the foul mouthed mother Carla steals every scene she's in. The ladies are joined by their mothers for Christmas and the similarities between this movie and that for Daddy's Home 2 won't escape some viewers. There isn't that much of a plot to be honest in that the ladies have to deal with their interfering mothers during the holiday season. I did find it unbelievable that they allowed a minor to swear several times during the movie. The filmmakers try to be more outrageous with the ladies' behaviour this time round but I don't think it worked out that well. All in all, this comedy certainly has its moments but if you expect it to hit the heights of the first movie you'll come away disappointed. Still, it's worth taking a look.

Den of Thieves is a movie to showcase how tough and rugged Gerard Butler is. He plays the head of a sheriff's unit that goes after a group of bank thieves. It's a good old heist movie with a plot that is so interwoven within itself that you are sometimes left a little floundering and running to catch up but with the awesome gun battles on display you won't be complaining too much about it. Even though Butler may be the main star here, the standout performer is Pablo Schreiber as the leader of the bad guys. The movie is well shot and has a good script and even though it does go on a little bit too long, this was a decent watch and I would certainly sit through it again.

Phillip Davidson is a man released from prison after serving 12 years for a murder he didn't commit. Finding a base home on a dilapidated barge in a boggy Thames inlet, Davidson sets about finding the liars who were responsible for his incarceration. This is a well directed and acted British noir crime thriller. It wasn't well received upon it's release but over the years it has garnered much praise. John Mills is fantastic as the vengeful ex convict stalking the dank London and Gravesend streets in search of revenge. It's a solid and involving drama which grips you right to the end.

A great war movie about a group of 12 Special Forces soldiers who were sent into Afghanistan in the weeks following the 9/11 attacks to lay the groundwork for the Taliban's downfall. They were called the Horse Soldiers as they were forced to ride horses against tanks and rockets. Despite this and the overwhelming odds against them, they displayed courage and heroism under fire. The story is tense and exciting with the battle scenes well shot. Chris Hemsworth is the main star as Captain Nelson who leads his troops against the Taliban. He gives a strong performance. The first half of the story could have been improved but it gets better and the final charge on horseback is well worth seeing. Overall a good movie but one that will be quickly forgotten by moviegoers.

Billed as a comedy but I'd say it's more of a drama than anything else. It tells the story of a couple who decide to undertake a newly-invented procedure to shrink their bodies so they can start a new life in an experimental community. The husband played by Matt Damon goes ahead with the procedure but the wife gets cold feet and pulls out leaving the husband alone in his new world. This is a movie of two halves. The first half is probably the most interesting but the second half goes into preaching mode as the viewer discovers that the problems encountered in the real world such as drug taking and poverty is also the same in the new small world. It's liked the filmmakers had changed direction half way through from being a tale about Matt Damon's journey as a little man to something completely different altogether. I wasn't too keen on this at all and as a result I become bored with the movie. It's a shame as I was starting to enjoy the story but as soon as the female Vietnamese character was introduced that was it for me. The movie on the whole did not deliver what it promised in the trailer.

A great romantic dark fantasy movie by Guillermo del Toro about a mute cleaning woman who falls in love with an amphibious humanoid creature that's been captured by the military and held in a secret facility. I didn't think I was going to like it at first but it definitely grew on me as the story went on. Even though the movie is a tad over 2 hours, the pacing is perfect and it never felt it was dragging or even gets boring. Sally Hawkins is amazing as the mute woman and shines in one of the best performances of her career so far. Backing her up is Octavia Spencer who plays her cleaning friend and Michael Shannon as a sadistic villain with an electric cattle prod who enjoys torturing the poor creature. I know many have said that this movie is something akin to The Creature From The Black Lagoon but it isn't. It's a completely different kettle of fish (to pardon a pun!). The movie has a solid storyline, a brilliant cast and is another triumph for the director. I really enjoyed this movie and despite the weird love story between a woman and a fish creature I'm sure you will too.

A different take from the usual Godzilla movies in that there's no stomping of cities in this one and humanity has been defeated by kaijus into going into outer space and settle on the planet Tau-Ceti e. This is the first in a new animated movie series about Godzilla. It's only average and definitely could have been improved. The story is about a battalion of human soldiers that come back to Earth to try and reclaim the planet back for humanity by seeking to kill Godzilla. I found the whole movie very underwhelming and not that exciting. The soldier wishing revenge on Godzilla for killing his parents has been seen before and done better in previous Godzilla movies. For a movie titled Planet of the Monsters, only one other species apart from Godzilla is shown. Yes, the animation looks great and all that but with such a lifeless story I found the whole experience rather dull.

I'm not sure why this has been praised so much as it's slightly overrated in my opinion. It's just your average coming of age story about a rebellious teenager growing up in Sacramento, California. It's the writing and directing debut of Greta Gerwig who I don't really think too highly as an actress to be honest. The cliche dialogue makes you want to roll your eyes. The only highlight of the movie is Saoirse Ronan's acting. She's good as the lead character in a movie inhabited by your usual high school stereotypes. A shame that she's been let down by a shoddy script. A lot of the movie concentrates on Lady Bird's relationship with her mother in which they quarrel quite a bit. Overall, I wasn't that impressed by this movie and I wouldn't bother watching it again.
