The DUFF
This may be your usual, typical and cliché teen flick in that the plot is more or less the same story of a not hot girl (called a Designated Ugly Fat Friend) who tries to change herself then loses her 2 best friends but finally discovers that this isn't who she is and ends up with the guy who she did not fancy in the first place. However, the real charm is within the main character of Bianca who is awkwardly funny and smart and played brilliantly by Mae Whitman. Even though there's nothing new you haven't seen before in this movie, don't let that put you off from watching it as it is a lot of fun. I really enjoyed it.

Tokyo Night Sky Is Always the Densest Shade of Blue
This intriguing movie is about 2 misfits living in Tokyo that find each other. Shinji is blind in one eye and works as a construction labourer. He is prone to talking shit that annoys his 3 friends. They are working on various sites to do with the Tokyo Olympics. Mika is a hospital nurse, whose duties include apologising to the families of those that have died. In the evenings she has another job in a hostess bar and that is where Mika and Shinji clasp eyes on each other. This isn't a straight forward tale of love as there are all sorts of complications but they meet at various times usually during the night to talk about their crappy lives. The viewer is given hints as to why they behave the way they do. Shizuka Ishibashi and Sosuke Ikematsu both give solid performances and I loved the cinematography which shows a lot of Shibuya and Shinjuku. I enjoyed this movie as it's not your usual sort of Tokyo love story.

Borg McEnroe
I think it was the Wimbledon 1980 Mens final when I was growing up that made me into a tennis fan. It was one of the best tennis matches you ever saw between 2 rivals. On one side you had the ice cool Swede in Bjorn Borg who was chasing a 5th Wimbledon title and on the other side of the net you had Superbrat himself in the raging volcano of John McEnroe. Two contrasting people who put on a tennis show that ebbed and flowed and made it into such an exciting contest. This movie isn't just about that match. It goes beyond that into their supposed lives. The viewer is made to believe that it was Borg that had an explosive temper as a young teen tennis player. How much of this is the truth I don't really know? The acting is fantastic: Shia LaBeouf, Stellan Skarsgård and especially Sverrir Gudnason who looks exactly like Borg was in the day is really good. For tennis lovers this is a great watch, for those of you who are not into tennis or similar sports, you might still enjoy it!

How to Marry a Millionaire
Three female gold diggers set up shop in a Manhattan penthouse, in an effort to attract wealthy husbands. This is supposed to be a comedy but the laughs are few and far between. With 3 big hitters in it's cast I expected this to be great but I was disappointed. It's only Marilyn Monroe that shines as a short sighted woman. Lauren Bacall is OK but the less said about Betty Grable with her squeaky voice and awful hairdo who is plain awful. The script is rather lame but I wouldn't have minded that if the movie had actual memorable funny lines but there isn't. In the end, this movie is a tiresome bore.

The Informers
After a bank robbery, an informer of Chief Inspector Johnno is found murdered after passing along information to the police. The criminal gang is determined to frame the Inspector and concoct a plan to make sure that he is sent to prison whilst they get away with the money. This is a very good British crime movie with a superb turn by Nigel Patrick as the dogged C.I Johnno. The bad guys are led by a stand-out Frank Finlay, making an impression at a young age, and an incredibly slimy Derren Nesbitt. It's quite a gritty movie for it's time. I would say it's the cast that makes this movie as you have a who's who of great British actors such as Roy Kinnear, George Sewell and even an appearance by Last of the Summer Wine's Brian Wilde. The story trundles along nicely to it's conclusion where everything is wrapped up. Definitely a thrilling and dramatic movie that's worth seeing.

6 Below: Miracle on the Mountain
This is apparently based on a true story in which former hockey player and drug addict Eric LeMarque became lost on a mountain during a blizzard and had to survive for 8 days before being rescued. It combines his current situation on the mountain with numerous depressing flashbacks throughout the movie, depicting LeMarque's troubled life which doesn't really make it an easy watch. Josh Hartnett gives a good performance as Eric with Mira Sorvino as his mother. In the end it shows the real Eric LeMarque and how he turned things around after his life or death ordeal. I've seen better survival movies but this one is still worth seeing.

Z for Zachariah
This movie brings the story of a couple of survivors of an unidentified contamination or radiation and the love triangle that ensues between them. Don't expect this movie to be faithful to Robert O'Brian's book as it differs quite a lot from it. The post apocalyptic scenario doesn't really affect the plot either so there's no action scenes or anything exciting for that matter that happens. It's basically just a slow paced romantic drama with tensions simmering between the 3 characters. Margot Robbie and Chris Pine are good but I felt it was Chiwetel Ejiofor that stood out and has the most interesting character. I wouldn't say this is a memorable movie at all. It's fine for what it is but I don't think I'll be watching it again anytime soon.

Cat
Based on a popular Japanese smartphone game, this movie is about a writer Masaru Sakumoto who is struggling to write his next novel. His publisher wants him to change what he's writing currently to feature zombies instead but he has no idea how to make it work so he gives up on it. He decides to move to the countryside where he can write in peace and quiet but once there he becomes distracted by the cats that visit his backyard. He begins to buy toys and food for all of them and the love the cats give back to him gives him the ability to start writing once more. I'm not a lover of cats to be honest so I have no idea why I wanted to watch this movie but the premise interested me so I gave it a go. It's a good movie of how the love of cats starts a change in a failing writer and gives him a much needed boost in rediscovering his talents. It's that simple a tale and you will have a smile on your face by the time the end credits begin. Atsushi Ito brings a childlike innocence to his performance as Sakumoto. I'm not sure where the rural location scenes were filmed but it looks like a lovely peaceful place to live and work. This movie will mostly appeal to cat lovers and those that enjoyed the game. The story has it's charm I'll say that for it.

Memoirs of a Murderer
A quite brilliant remake of the South Korean movie of the same name. 22 years after a string of brutal murders in Tokyo with the police failing to catch the killer, a man comes forward with a book claiming to be the murderer nicknamed the Tokyo Strangler as he no longer can be brought to trail due to a statue of limitation. He goes on a media tour taunting the police for not having caught him. The victims families which includes a police detective Makimura are outraged as they want justice. Soon after though, suspicions are aroused that the man may not actually be the killer? If he isn't then who is the killer and can Makimura find the person responsible? This is a very engrossing murder mystery movie and the outrageous twists in the plot keeps you on the edge of your seat right to the end. I cannot say how close to the Korean original this movie is as I haven't seen it yet. This is the kind of thriller I really like so it hit all the right notes with me. The plot is insanely clever with 2 superb leads in Tatsuya Fujiwara and Hideaki Ito. Director Yû Irie keeps a fast moving pace to the proceedings and has you guessing who the actual murderer really is. It was probably around half way through the movie that I correctly guessed who the culprit was. Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable movie and I can heartily recommend it to murder mystery fans.

Ancien and the Magic Tablet

Ancien and the Magic Tablet
A cool anime which takes place in 2 settings: present day Japan and the fantasy kingdom called Heartland. A young teenage girl called Kokone finds herself dreaming of being a princess in Heartland where her father has been arrested of stealing technology. However, Kokone's dreams and reality fuse together when the events that take place in Heartland seems to come true in her own real life and she must try and save her father from the clutches of a greedy corporate executive who wants to take over a giant motoring company. This anime movie has a lot going for it with an exciting storyline that has plenty of thrills and spills for the entire family to enjoy. The intriguing plot with it's 2 settings work well especially when they both start to meld together towards the climax. There are touches of the works of Studio Ghibli in the whole proceedings which should interest many Western anime fans. The heroine in Kokone and her dream alter ego Ancien are very likable and you will find yourself rooting for her. The animation by Signal MD is excellent and no doubt the real life locations in Okayama perfecture featured here will see fans flocking to visit the area. This is a great movie with a solid plot. I really liked it.

Two murdering sisters in Kitty and Lulu have to sacrifice 5 men (with the last being a virgin) in order to resurrect their dead father. They set their eyes on 2 long time friends Jim & Alex in a bar (as one is a 29 year old virgin). A quite amusing comedy horror which is a change as usually movies made in this genre by Britain haven't got a good track record. I wasn't expecting much but I was pleasantly surprised by how great it was. The cast are fantastic and there is genuine humour to be had. Gorehounds won't be disappointed either. An entertaining movie.

A beautiful young woman is attacked and murdered at her home and Detective Inspector Matthews is charged with the investigation. He finds that the deceased was one of a pair of twins. The surviving twin's guardian has a very rare and expensive stamp that may have been the reason for the murder. A so and so thriller with a lead character that seems like a watered down version of The Sweeney's Jack Regan. There isn't that much suspense to be had and apart from a good but short car chase not that much excitement either. The location filming around Windsor and it's castle looks good though and there are short cameos by Penelope Keith and Una Stubbs. Francesca Annis is gorgeous and plays the dual role of the twins Diane and Delphi. There are a couple of twists and turns in the plot which makes it slightly interesting but with a bit more oomph this should have been a lot better than what it was. As it is, this is a predictable but still watchable thriller.

In 1970's Boston, an illegal arms deal goes from bad to worse, leaving a group of low lifes with guns drawn, for an hour long shootout in an abandoned warehouse. This movie started out quite well but after setting things up in the warehouse and all hell breaking loose, it started to lose it's appeal and it became boring. The problem with this seemingly never ending shootout, complete with guns which hold about 96 bullets, and characters who are shot multiple times, only to show no ill affects, is that it never looks real. There's not a character you care about either so that doesn't help things. A shame the great cast which includes Cillian Murphy and Brie Larson got wasted in such a movie.
