A Run for Your Money
An early classic from Ealing Studios which set the blueprint for their most famous movies. Two naive brothers Twm and Dai who are miners from South Wales win a contest in a paper. They go down to London to see the rugby match between England and Wales and collect their ยฃ200 prize. On arriving in London, the two get separated. One gets involved with a female con artist after his money and the other hangs around with a Welsh harpist where both proceed to get drunk! This movie was an absolute joy to watch of two innocents coming to the big city for the first time. It's simple, down to earth, effective but most of all it's so much fun. Meredith Edwards and Donald Houston are the two brothers with Alec Guinness playing the gardening columnist of The Daily Echo trying to find the brothers on behalf of his boss. There is plenty of opportunity to hear the good natured Welsh at their majestic best - singing their hearts out of various rugby anthems. It's true that the story contains every possible stereotype of the Welsh you might think of - male voice choirs, mining, chapels, and families all possessing the same surname. A wonderful comedy which I enjoyed very much.

Downton Abbey's Jessica Brown Findlay is the aspiring teen author and rebel Emilia who befriends Beth played by Felicity Jones. Beth's parents run a guest house with her father also being an author. He begins to tutor Emilia and one thing leads to another between the two. A great coming of age tale with brilliant acting between the two young female stars. This is Jessica Brown Findlay's movie through and through as she steals every scene she's in. Her charm and wit wins you over immediately and captures your attention. The stunning beauty of the Isle of Man is filmed superbly. The title of the movie is basically Emilia and other characters wanting to get rid of the albatross around their necks. An interesting and at times funny movie.

A Silent Voice (2016)
As a young boy Ishida bullied a deaf girl Nishimiya from his class to the point where she moved away to a new school. Years later, Ishida finds himself ostracised from his class and in the same situation as Nishimiya was before. He tries to make amends to Nishimiya but the path to redemption is a long one for somebody that loathes himself and Nishimiya herself is hiding a dark secret from her own family. An outstanding anime movie that is touching, thought provoking and moving. It deals with the consequences of bullying and the deep hurt it causes to a person later on in life. I'm glad that this kind of movie with a heavy subject has been released in Japan where bullying is rife in the schools and the stories you hear of kids taking their own lives because of this is distressing to read about. Kyoto Animation must be congratulated for making this movie. I liked the characters even though I really despised those that bullied Nishimiya at first (it wasn't just Ishida but a number of girls in the class as well). As the characters grow up and mature, it's interesting to see them mature, change their personality and regret the stupid decisions they made earlier. It'a a great lesson for everybody to take on board. All in all, this is one of the best movies I've seen so far in 2018. It comes highly recommended and everybody should go and see it.

Wolf Warrior 2
A throwback to the brilliant action movies that Hong Kong produced in the 80's and 90's. It starts off with an attack on a ship by Somali water pirates and doesn't let up until the end credits. If it's all out action and loud explosions you want then you've come to the right place. The story is paper thin but that's not why you want to watch this movie. Wu Jing is in the mould of a classic action star and he is fantastic as the ex-special forces officer Leng Feng who takes on the army of a would be dictator in Africa. The Chinese propaganda in this movie I didn't really care about to be honest. I haven't seen the first movie yet but I definitely will now. Sit back, have a beer and prepare to be entertained by this exciting and thrilling movie. You won't be disappointed.

Sakurada Reset: Part II
The concluding part to the Sakurada Reset double bill is slightly better than the first movie. After resurrecting a dead classmate, the Administration Bureau decide to purge everybody in the town of Sakurada of all their abilities but Kei and his friends decide to take a stand and stop them. The story in the 2nd part flows better than the first with more going on. The clash between a top ranking Bureau member and Asai Kei is interesting with the two using their abilities to get one up on the other even though I felt the Bureau member was a bit OTT at times as a villain but that's the norm in many Japanese movies. The climax is rather disappointing I have to say. As a whole, the two Sakurada movies are OK. They're not something you should rush out to watch.

The Battleship Island
This movie is based on a little known fact during WWII in which Korean people captured by the Japanese were transported to a small fortified island off the coast of Nagasaki where they were forced to work in coal mines under terrible conditions in order to keep Japan's war machine to carry on. The story imagines what it would be like if the forced workers rebelled against their captors and tried to escape. Although quite a long movie at around 2 hours and a quarter, the story never lags and always keeps your interest because you want the Koreans to win against their sadistic jailers. The actors are very good in their roles and the action scenes particularly the break out near the climax is exciting and harrowing. It's not a straight forward movie as there are twists with some Korean prisoners working covertly with the Japanese for their own greed and reporting back on troublemakers in the work force. Director Seung-wan Ryoo skillfully balances the story's action with its tender moments and brutality. A very entertaining movie overall.

In This Corner of the World
A brilliant slice of life drama set during WWII in Kure, Japan which is near Hiroshima. The lead character is called Suzu and the viewer follows her life (including her family) in and around Kure & Hiroshima before, during and after the war and see the hardship and suffering by the city's population in which food is rationed and Kure is subjected to daily air raids. Even Suzu herself does not escape the war unscathed and loses part of her arm when an American bomb goes off close to her. Her companion at the time, a child sadly loses her life. The bomb dropping at Hiroshima is shown differently to other movies as well. The movie starts off quite light but grows darker as the story goes on. It does not shirk from showing in graphic detail the aftermath of what the bomb has done. A very powerful anime movie which tells it's story extremely well. Recommended.

Would have had a better rating if they hadn't skipped over some of the walks so quickly, got rid of the annoying background music and the awful filler thrown in for some routes.

The 14
An obscure British kitchen sink drama based on a true story about a family of 14 kids that live in squalor in a run down house in London's slum in the East End that's due to be demolished. When their mother dies and other people try to break the family apart, the kids conspire to be together, no matter who tries to stop them. A good story that I might have had some sympathy for the children if only they weren't bloody annoying. They are rowdy, uncouth and act like wild animals. From shoplifting to grifting, their existence isn't the happiest one as they try to stay together under increasingly oppressive circumstances. The only one of the kids that you feel you want to succeed is the eldest son played by Jack Wild. He does his best to keep them together. Thankfully there is a chink of light for all of the kids near the climax. Eastenders stalwarts June Brown and Anna Wing are only in the movie for a short while. If you enjoy grim and depressing drama then this will be right up your street.

Whisky Galore
An updated version of the 1949 classic movie that has the inhabitants of a small Scottish island trying to outwit the Home Guard as they plan to steal bottles of whisky on a ship that has been stranded on rocks. It is supposedly based on a real life incident. Although the movie is quite quirky and has it's moments, I felt it didn't capture the charm that made the original so good although the actors do their best with the script. There is some lovely location shooting but for a movie set in Scotland I've no idea why Irish music was used instead. Gregor Fisher and Eddie Izzard take the top of the bill in this movie and are decent enough in their roles. There is plenty of wry humour to pass the 98 running time. Worth a watch if you enjoy family comedies.

Sakurada Reset: Part 1
A town called Sakurada has people that can develop super powers but if you leave the town those powers and the memory of the person disappears. The people with super powers are overseen by an Administrative Bureau who ask them for their help in certain situations. Two rogue super teens decide that the Bureau needs to be taken apart and it's up to 2 other teens in Kei and Misora to try and stop them. Also they want to resurrect a friend of theirs who died 2 years previously but no one in the town has ever managed to do that. This movie sounded interesting with it's tale of people with mysterious powers to change things for the better but somehow it didn't quite click with me. Perhaps it was to do with the dull characters that inhabit the movie and the plodding storyline. The villains aren't threatening enough considering the deadly abilities they have. The story just meanders slowly with hardly any excitement and I felt it went through the motions. There was nothing to grab me and sustain my interest. On saying that I will still watch Part 2 and hope that things will improve but this movie overall was fairly disappointing.

Victoria & Abdul

Victoria & Abdul
This is the remarkable story of the close friendship that happened between Queen Victoria and her Indian spiritual adviser Abdul Karim during the end of her reign. It pictures the Queen being reinvigorated in life thanks to her Munshi who taught her to speak and read Urdi. Unfortunately the Royal household including the Queen's eldest son Bertie are not pleased with what's going on and plot to get rid of Abdul. In 1997, Dame Judi Dench portrayed Queen Victoria in the movie Mrs Brown and 20 years later she returns to the role she made her own. She is excellent as the tired and weary monarch. The burden of being on the throne for so long coupled with loneliness after the death of her beloved husband Prince Albert still bothers her. Ali Fazal is brilliant as Abdul Karim, the man who captivates the Queen and becomes her loyal servant. Kudos also to Eddie Izzard who pulls off a wonderful performance as Bertie. Director Stephen Frears has done a great job with the movie and the cinemtography showing the beautiful Scottish landscape is a joy to behold. Although not a completely historically accurate movie of what really took place, this is still a treat to watch and I really enjoyed it.
