Cat
Based on a popular Japanese smartphone game, this movie is about a writer Masaru Sakumoto who is struggling to write his next novel. His publisher wants him to change what he's writing currently to feature zombies instead but he has no idea how to make it work so he gives up on it. He decides to move to the countryside where he can write in peace and quiet but once there he becomes distracted by the cats that visit his backyard. He begins to buy toys and food for all of them and the love the cats give back to him gives him the ability to start writing once more. I'm not a lover of cats to be honest so I have no idea why I wanted to watch this movie but the premise interested me so I gave it a go. It's a good movie of how the love of cats starts a change in a failing writer and gives him a much needed boost in rediscovering his talents. It's that simple a tale and you will have a smile on your face by the time the end credits begin. Atsushi Ito brings a childlike innocence to his performance as Sakumoto. I'm not sure where the rural location scenes were filmed but it looks like a lovely peaceful place to live and work. This movie will mostly appeal to cat lovers and those that enjoyed the game. The story has it's charm I'll say that for it.

Memoirs of a Murderer
A quite brilliant remake of the South Korean movie of the same name. 22 years after a string of brutal murders in Tokyo with the police failing to catch the killer, a man comes forward with a book claiming to be the murderer nicknamed the Tokyo Strangler as he no longer can be brought to trail due to a statue of limitation. He goes on a media tour taunting the police for not having caught him. The victims families which includes a police detective Makimura are outraged as they want justice. Soon after though, suspicions are aroused that the man may not actually be the killer? If he isn't then who is the killer and can Makimura find the person responsible? This is a very engrossing murder mystery movie and the outrageous twists in the plot keeps you on the edge of your seat right to the end. I cannot say how close to the Korean original this movie is as I haven't seen it yet. This is the kind of thriller I really like so it hit all the right notes with me. The plot is insanely clever with 2 superb leads in Tatsuya Fujiwara and Hideaki Ito. Director Yรป Irie keeps a fast moving pace to the proceedings and has you guessing who the actual murderer really is. It was probably around half way through the movie that I correctly guessed who the culprit was. Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable movie and I can heartily recommend it to murder mystery fans.

Ancien and the Magic Tablet
A cool anime which takes place in 2 settings: present day Japan and the fantasy kingdom called Heartland. A young teenage girl called Kokone finds herself dreaming of being a princess in Heartland where her father has been arrested of stealing technology. However, Kokone's dreams and reality fuse together when the events that take place in Heartland seems to come true in her own real life and she must try and save her father from the clutches of a greedy corporate executive who wants to take over a giant motoring company. This anime movie has a lot going for it with an exciting storyline that has plenty of thrills and spills for the entire family to enjoy. The intriguing plot with it's 2 settings work well especially when they both start to meld together towards the climax. There are touches of the works of Studio Ghibli in the whole proceedings which should interest many Western anime fans. The heroine in Kokone and her dream alter ego Ancien are very likable and you will find yourself rooting for her. The animation by Signal MD is excellent and no doubt the real life locations in Okayama perfecture featured here will see fans flocking to visit the area. This is a great movie with a solid plot. I really liked it.

Double Date
Two murdering sisters in Kitty and Lulu have to sacrifice 5 men (with the last being a virgin) in order to resurrect their dead father. They set their eyes on 2 long time friends Jim & Alex in a bar (as one is a 29 year old virgin). A quite amusing comedy horror which is a change as usually movies made in this genre by Britain haven't got a good track record. I wasn't expecting much but I was pleasantly surprised by how great it was. The cast are fantastic and there is genuine humour to be had. Gorehounds won't be disappointed either. An entertaining movie.

A beautiful young woman is attacked and murdered at her home and Detective Inspector Matthews is charged with the investigation. He finds that the deceased was one of a pair of twins. The surviving twin's guardian has a very rare and expensive stamp that may have been the reason for the murder. A so and so thriller with a lead character that seems like a watered down version of The Sweeney's Jack Regan. There isn't that much suspense to be had and apart from a good but short car chase not that much excitement either. The location filming around Windsor and it's castle looks good though and there are short cameos by Penelope Keith and Una Stubbs. Francesca Annis is gorgeous and plays the dual role of the twins Diane and Delphi. There are a couple of twists and turns in the plot which makes it slightly interesting but with a bit more oomph this should have been a lot better than what it was. As it is, this is a predictable but still watchable thriller.

Free Fire
In 1970's Boston, an illegal arms deal goes from bad to worse, leaving a group of low lifes with guns drawn, for an hour long shootout in an abandoned warehouse. This movie started out quite well but after setting things up in the warehouse and all hell breaking loose, it started to lose it's appeal and it became boring. The problem with this seemingly never ending shootout, complete with guns which hold about 96 bullets, and characters who are shot multiple times, only to show no ill affects, is that it never looks real. There's not a character you care about either so that doesn't help things. A shame the great cast which includes Cillian Murphy and Brie Larson got wasted in such a movie.

Rising Damp (1980)
One of the better examples of a British 70's sitcom getting the big screen treatment. All the cast from the classic series return apart from Richard Beckinsale who had passed away so Christopher Strauli replaced him as a new character. The movie has 3 threads running through it: that of Strauli's character moving in to share a room with Don Warrington's Philip, a boxing match between Philip and Rigsby and Denholm Elliott as an English gentlemen who is looking to steal money and win Miss Jones' heart. It's quite an amusing movie and Leonard Rossiter is on fine form as the landlord Rigsby. In fact all of the cast are given good material to work with here. It's obviously not as good as the episodes from the series itself but there is plenty of laughs to be had. Fans of the series will definitely enjoy it.

We Joined the Navy

We Joined the Navy
This movie feels like a watered down version of a Carry On movie and without much of the comedy as well. It's about a bunch of new navy recruits and the misadventures that takes place when they join up on a joint exercise with the American navy. The laughs are few and far between and some of it consists of one recruit being pursued by the Doberman dog of the American Navy Admiral. The laughs really dry up near the end as the plot goes way off course. The list of cameos by famous British comedians is fantastic from Sid James, John Le Mesurier, Rodney Bewes, Michael Bentine and Brian Wilde. Kenneth More is the star player in this movie and sadly this isn't his best role. I wanted to like this movie but it did go flat after a while. I would only recommend it to British comedy completists.

This is another imbecile and over-the-top cheesy 80's horror flick about demonic possession with an awfully bad script and hilarious special effects. It's about a young woman Susan suffering from a curse that killed her mother and it seems that Susan is going down the same path. Her eyes glow a darker shade of green when she's possessed and whatever poor soul she's focusing on dies a very unpleasant death. There's absolutely no logic or suspense in the script and the only thing keeping it from being an absolute stinker is the imaginative deaths that take place. I did think that it would improve for the finale but unfortunately it doesn't. It's not really worth watching as there are far better demonic possession movies around.

Jungle
Based on a true story, it follows 3 friends who go on a trek in the South American jungle with a suspicious guide to find a supposed Indian tribe but things go awry when their raft capsizes on a river. On land, 2 of the men decide to walk and find civilisation whilst the other 2 build another raft and go downriver but again problems occur when both men go overboard. Yossi finds himself alone with no help and has to navigate through the deep jungle and the deadly creatures that inhabit the area and try and find his friend or some kind of help. What an incredible story of survival this is with a great performance by Daniel Radcliffe. The story has it's mix of suspense and danger as Yoshii goes to hell and back but never gives up in the hope that somebody will come across and rescue him. The movie starts out quite slow but once Radcliffe's character Yossi is alone after being pushed down a mighty river the story comes into it's own and you find yourself willing Yossi along and praying for his rescue. The cinematography is fantastic with the lush green jungle scenes really standing out. The movie kept me glued right to the very end. I think this was one of Daniel Radcliffe's best performance of his career. Overall, it's quite a gripping survival adventure story and if you love these kind of movies I'm sure this one will keep you hooked as well.
