Ghost Ship
A young couple ignores warnings that the luxury yacht they just purchased may be haunted. This low budget chiller is a movie easy to pass over, mainly because of the generic nature of the title. It's only a minor b-movie, and not the best for any of the talent involved, but it is a solid, effective little movie that sets out to do what it wants to do: create an atmospheric mystery-cum-chiller on a non-existent budget, relying on acting, dialogue, characters, and story rather than special effects. There's no action so to speak of, but the movie does contain some admirable acting, an excellent flashback told by a medium of a love triangle gone horribly wrong, lots of tension and a good plot twist. The movie isn't a masterpiece and it's easy to see why it has been forgotten but those that enjoy stories like this should enjoy it.

A Severed Head
Antonia Lynch-Gibbon, wife of upper-crust wine dealer Martin, falls in love with her husband's best friend, noted psychiatrist Palmer Anderson. While both Palmer and Antonia would like to remain in Martin's life, he has some secrets of his own namely, a mistress called Georgie, whom his womanising brother also desires. All the while, Palmer's sister seems to know everyone's business. Directed by Dick Clement, one half of a prolific comedy writing partnership in the UK with Ian La Frenais, I thought this was a comedy horror because of the title but it is nothing of the sort. It's a very unfunny comedy about infidelity between 6 unlikable people. The story is awful and wastes a wonderful cast such as Lee Remick, Richard Attenborough and Ian Holm among others. Even though it wasn't what I was expecting, I did make it to the end of the movie. I didn't register one single laugh whilst watching which shows how poor it is. Give it a wide berth.

The Counterfeit Plan
Criminal mastermind Max Brant blackmails a former forger to get back into criminal business with him. His daughter arrives to the house and tries to persuade her father to stay away from the sleazy Brant. This 50's British crime noir about a large-scale counterfeiting operation didn't do that much to me. It's reminiscent of many crime flicks but one big problem is I found it very dull. The movie takes its subject very seriously, sharing many details about the complex work of counterfeiting. It might be interesting for some people to learn about paper pulp, chemicals, ink and watermarks but it was nearly enough to make me go to sleep. I'm sure many will enjoy this movie but as I've said before I found it painfully boring.

Prospect
A man and his teenage daughter travel to an alien moon with a contract to mine gems in the moon's poisonous forest. The daughter is forced to face other people in the forest, as well as her father's greed. A simplistic, lean, minamalist sci-fi. Where this movie really shines is the atmosphere. The creators have brought to life a completely believable world much akin to Ridley Scott's Alien universe. The performances are also great. Especially from Pedro Pascal and newcomer Sophie Thatcher. However, where the film is lacking a bit is in characterisation. You are able to get behind the characters as they strive to complete their task, but you never really get to know them. This may be a conscious choice, but I feel that the movie could have benefited from more fleshed out characters. Overall, Prospect is a great exercise in sci-fi world building and I'd say it's a very safe bet for any hardcore sci-fi fan.

Contest Girl
An opportunist British newsman starts promoting a young typist from local beauty contests to a global competition. One of the earliest movies to expose the sordid, media-drenched world of competitive beauty pageants. Director Val Guest does a fine job showing how easily a young woman from a humble background can get sucked into the cut-throat scramble for fame and luxury, and Janette Scott is appropriately wide-eyed and pretty as the central character, who quickly ditches her fiance and working-class family in exchange for a bit of glamour and excitement. The movie does drag a little bit in the second half and a good 25 mins should have been cut to make it flow better. There's a small cameo from Sid James as a beauty contest judge. An interesting curio and a largely forgotten movie in the UK.

The Passenger
David Locke is a world-weary American journalist who has been sent to cover a conflict in northern Africa, but he makes little progress with the story. When he discovers the body of a stranger who looks similar to him, Locke assumes the dead man's identity. However, he soon finds out that the man was an arms dealer, leading Locke into dangerous situations. Aided by a beautiful woman, Locke attempts to avoid both the police and criminals out to get him. This is a movie about someone in the midst of an identity crisis, it's about someone who wants to free the shackles of who they are. This is one of the most subdued performances I've seen from Jack Nicholson. Here he feels like a character that has depth and struggles. It was refreshing to see him in a role like this rather then being a caricature of himself. Maria Schneider also does a good job as Nicholson's accomplice. The main problem I had with this movie was it felt a bit lifeless. The movie is technically sound, and it looks gorgeous due to being shot on location. When I was watching the movie I couldn't work out if it was meant to be a thriller or a character study, in the end it's more of a character piece. Overall, The Passenger is visually beautiful, with a great performance from Jack Nicholson, but the story didn't connect with me.

On the Fiddle
Horace Pope is just an everyday street peddler when the authorities pick him up for practicing his trade. Not wanting to go to jail, Pope invents a story about enlisting in the military, which convinces the judge to send him to the Royal Air Force instead of prison. Since it happens to be during World War II, Pope pulls every scheme and scam he can with the help of his new soldier friend, Pedlar Pascoe, to avoid actual work, but he can't shirk his duty forever. This is a perfectly charming little service comedy, with the added bonus of co-starring Sean Connery just before he attained fame in the role of James Bond. Even better, Connery plays totally against type, as an ingenuous, somewhat stupid-but-likable serviceman. Alfred Lynch is the real star, though, playing a weasely British version of Sgt. Bilko, running numerous scams with his dim-witted buddy Connery. It's funny. Imagine American service sitcoms such as "McHale's Navy" and "Sgt. Bilko" crossed with the gently loopy charms of Ealing comedies, and you'll get an idea of the tone of this movie.

Conspiracy of Hearts
During World War II, Mother Superior Katharine oversees a picturesque Italian convent and makes it her duty to smuggle out the Jewish children from a nearby concentration camp. The nuns in her charge react in different ways: While sensitive novice Sister Mitya takes a special interest in the refugees, worldly Sister Gerta is reluctant to get involved at all. After the Nazis occupy the convent, their situation becomes dire. A vastly under-rated and unknown movie. The story about a mixed European bag of nuns in sunny Italy, sheltering Jewish children from nasty Nazis, could have easily wound up as sticky or preachy as a Hollywood movie of the week but thankfully it isn't. The plot has a surprisingly powerful depiction of the clash between faith and might, as Lilli Palmer's Mother Superior stands firm against Albert Lieven's uncompromising Nazi Colonel. The question of conscience and commitment to duty is repeatedly explored, from the perspective of both nun and soldier. The cast perform unbelievably well with a stunningly beautiful Sylvia Sims as a novice nun. The climax at the end of the movie with the anticipated shooting of 3 nuns is very moving to witness. All in all, this is a sincere and serious drama that's well worth watching.

The Red Baron
Dashing WWI flying ace Manfred von Richthofen proves a propaganda success above the Western Front, famed as `The Red Baron'. However, over time the brutal realities of war and command bring him down to earth. The movie itself is not a flat action/history flick, it has a message to tell and that comes across really well. The relationship between the Baron and his French girlfriend who is a nurse is told in a very subtle way, no cheesy romance-scenes. There are no clichรฉs, just a portrait of a hero that did not even want to be one. And the cruelty and absurdity of war itself, as even the main protagonist has to learn. The ending is also well done and not cheesy or over the top. The cast, largely German, were fine. The movie could have been a lot better and the dogfights were not as exciting as I thought they might be. Still, it does a decent job of depicting the insanity of World War I.

Gwen
Desperately trying to hold everything together, young Gwen struggles with her mother's mysterious illness, her father's absence and a ruthless mining company that's encroaching on their land. As a growing darkness begins to take grip, the local community grows suspicious and slowly turns on the beleaguered family. A tale of folk horror set in the mountains of Snowdonia related in a gothic style reminiscent of Wuthering Heights yet also incorporating elements of The Witch. Evil is abound but the real malevolence may be the horror of an impoverished people being manipulated into mob violence by their exploiter - the boss of the local quarry. A slow moving movie which won't be to everyone's taste and the bleakness may even put folk horror aficionados off. But both Eleanor Worthington Cox and Maxine Peak put in powerful performances. A dark, atmospheric and moody movie.

Angel Has Fallen
Authorities take Secret Service agent Mike Banning into custody for the failed assassination attempt of U.S. President Allan Trumbull. After escaping from his captors, Banning must evade the FBI and his own agency to find the real threat to the president. Desperate to uncover the truth, he soon turns to unlikely allies to help clear his name and save the country from imminent danger. The Fallen franchise deviates from the previous installments by taking a page from The Fugitive and having Secret Service member Mike Banning framed for treason and having to go on the run to find who set him up. Gerard Butler's still got it as Banning. Nick Nolte is a fun new addition as Banning's reclusive survivalist, anti-government father. The villains if not outstanding are smart and provide a reasonable threat with some neat tricks up their sleeves. The action is quite good, especially the opening attack and the final confrontation. Director Ric Roman Waugh has a good eye for visuals and settings. The camera work though is distracting. There is way too much shaky cam not to mention a couple misplace quick pans. I definitely think this is better than London Has Fallen. It might not be the greatest action movie ever made but you'll have a blast watching this exciting movie.

Five Golden Dragons
The Five Golden Dragons are an international criminal gold trafficking secret society syndicate based in Hong Kong. They plan to break up after selling their criminal enterprise to the Mafia for US$50 million. However the members of the group fear the greed of each other in receiving their share of the profits. An American playboy and a two sisters become involved in the action. This is a poor movie that doesn't know whether it wants to be a drama or a comedy. It's main attraction is the cast and definitely not the awful plot. The movie was shot on location at the Shaw Brothers studios in Hong Kong. Bob Cummings is terrible as the main lead who bumbles his way into situations and say stupid things that are suppose to be funny. You'll see appearances by Klaus Kinski and Christopher Lee but it's fair to say this isn't one of their best movies. The only real interest I had by watching was looking at Hong Kong of old and seeing planes coming into land at the Kai Tek airport. Apart from that, this movie is a car crash. Don't bother with it.

Nothing Barred
Penniless Lord Whitebait plans to save his dwindling fortunes by opening his stately home Whitebait Manor, to the public. But when nobody has any interest, he is forced to take desperate measures. He and his servant Spankforth plot to stage the theft of a valuable painting from Whitebait Manor, and they are aided in their scheme by Wilfred Sapling, a plumber. Another great comedy from Brian Rix. All the farce elements are there from prat falls, dressing up, mistaken motives, ham acting and totally unbelievable situations with equally unbelievable outcomes. Plenty of laughs to be had such as a bunch of prisoners singing O! Come All Ye Faithful dressed as choristers down in the sewers having escaped from Wormwood Scrubs prison in order for Wilfred Sapling to find them. Wonderful location filming showing Central London in the early 60's. The cast is great with cameos from Terry Scott and Irene Handl. Sit back, put your feet up and enjoy this wonderful comedy.

633 Squadron (1964)
Norwegian resistance fighter Erik Bergman offers the British Royal Air Force an irresistible target when he reveals the location of a secret Nazi rocket factory. American pilot Roy Grant commands the fighter squadron ordered to take out the plant, but he discovers that the location is even more formidable than he had been told. When the promised ground support troops fail to show up, Grant fears he and his men are on a doomed mission. Once you get passed the poor central casting, pedantic direction and and abrupt, indeterminate, downbeat ending, you may come to enjoy this movie. Great flying, a rousing score and decent special effects lifts this one above the humdrum. The very American Cliff Robertson plays a British wing commander and the very dark, very Greek George Chakiris plays a Norwegian commando. I'm sure they could have picked some decent British actors to play these roles. This movie is worth seeing, if only for the final assault on the plant which is similar to the X-Wing attack on the Death Star. Perhaps George Lucas was inspired by this movie? A very entertaining war movie with wonderful footage of the De Havilland Mosquito airplane.

Resident Evil: Extinction
The 3rd movie in the Resident Evil franchise finds Alice hiding out in the Nevada desert where she joins forces with former cohorts Carlos and L.J. as well as new survivors Claire, K-Mart and Nurse Betty to eradicate the virus that threatens to turn every human on Earth into a zombie. This exciting movie contains thrills, chills, plenty of action with fierce combats and lots of gore and guts. The horror and action moments are fast moving and choreographed well. The movie turns out to be a crossover between Mad Max, The Walking Dead and Alien. It's quite predictable but that's redeemed in part by the charismatic acting from Milla Jovovich and Ali Larter. The flesh-eating mutants appearance deliver the goods, plenty of screams, shocks and tension. Worth a look for horror and action fans.
