Horse Feathers
This is the shortest Marx Brothers movie, and you can see why: with a super-thin "plot" about Huxley College having to win a football game and minimal time given to the supporting characters, the brothers have nearly the entire movie to themselves. The musical numbers slow down the movie and Harpo's solo on the harp goes on for way too long. Zeppo Marx might not have been as comically gifted as his brothers, he was a far more entertaining "straight man" than all the replacements they used in their later movies. Expect the usual Marx Brothers madness and mayhem in this one. The gags come thick and fast. You'll have a fun time watching this movie.

Captain Scarlett
Captain Scarlett returns to France to discover the Duke of Corlaine seizing property and terrorizing those who resist. When Scarlett helps Spanish Princess Maria escape an arranged marriage, he is arrested and placed in chains, along with Pierre Du Cloux, whose lands were confiscated, forcing him to become an outlaw. Scarlett and Pierre break out, rescue Maria and set about rousing the peasants to resist the duke's tyranny. This has nothing to do with Gerry Anderson's puppet series!! It's a fairly good adventure romp with a fast moving plot. Richard Greene, who played Robin Hood in the British TV series in the 50's, is playing almost the same role, in a costume from somewhere around 1800, with a sword instead of a longbow. This movie has the feel of one of those RKO weekly serials from the 30's and 40's. This should have been a classic swashbuckler but the cheesy script and poor fight choreography doesn't help things at all. The print I watched had an awful colour scheme to it which makes it look cheap. Despite all it's flaws, it's worth giving this movie a go.

Quarantine
This is the American remake of the Spanish horror Rec. If you've seen the original is it worth watching this? Well not really as director John Erick Dowdle has has taken the scares from the original and simply re-done them. In fact the movie is almost a shot for shot remake of Rec! However, there is one change in the storyline. In this movie, it's suggested that it's a strand of rabies that has caused the outbreak. In the original, it's never really revealed what is causing it, although events towards the end suggest a possible supernatural cause. But because they've changed it here, it means the final scenes don't work as well, and don't really fit. The movie is slightly longer than the original, spending more time with the firemen at the station before the events begin, and has a little more emphasis on what is going on outside also, but these little changes don't affect the movie that much. If you've not seen the original then it is a pretty effective scary movie, especially the last 15 minutes. However if you've seen Rec, then this movie offers nothing new, and isn't as good overall.

The Greengage Summer
Left alone because of their mother's sudden hospitalisation during a vacation in France, four British children have to fend for themselves. They stay at a hotel, where, despite the reticence of owner Madame Zisi, they are befriended by her lover, Eliot. Joss, the eldest of the children, runs afoul of Madame Zisi, who thinks Eliot is spending too much time with her and causes a scene. Robbed of Eliot's attention, Joss denounces him to the police. A charming yet disturbing movie. The movie is set in the Champagne Country in France, so we get some beautiful views of the French countryside and even a look into the Champagne Caves. That alone would probably be enough for some people but we have a great story too which involves a young woman's sexual awakening. Susannah York in her first big starring role captures the heart of her unofficial guardian, middle-aged Englishman Eliot played by Kenneth More, and Joss soon becomes entangled in a love triangle between her, Eliot, and co-owner of the hotel, Madame Zizi. I felt uncomfortable that a 41 year old man was lusting after a 16 year old girl. There's also a pivotal scene which has a drunken Frenchman trying to rape Joss in her bedroom which isn't easy to watch. To be honest Susannah York was way too old to play a 16 year old schoolgirl - she was 32 at the time of filming. All in all, a good if slightly sinister movie of a girl transitioning into womanhood.

The Comedy Man
Chick Byrd is an unemployed actor in London, recently fired from a repertory theater amidst allegations of sexual misconduct. His flatmate, Julian Baxter, has recently returned from a disillusioning stint in Hollywood, and his agent, Tommy Morris, is pressuring Byrd to take jobs in television, a medium he considers beneath his talents. When Byrd relents and takes a small part in a TV commercial, unexpected repercussions complicate his life. This is a drama (with some comedy) and apparently one one of the most accurate depictions of the grotty underside of showbiz. The movie is supposed to be very realistic, sometimes depressingly so. Byrd dreams of stardom, but he lives in a cheap bedsit and collects dole cheques. He can't get a "real" job because he's always making the rounds of casting calls. Byrd is played by Kenneth More, a dramatic actor with comedy experience, who gives a good performance. I won't divulge the movie's ending, except to say that it's unexpected yet very plausible.

Tremors 3: Back to Perfection
In Perfection Valley, Nevada, Burt Gummer is paranoid with the Graboids and their evolution Shriekers. The small time crook Desert Jack Sawyer swindles tourists with his partner simulating the existence of Graboids. When the deadly worms return to the town, Burt is forced to team-up with Jack and the trader Jodi Chang to fight back and save their lives. The third entry in the Tremors franchise is the movie equivalent of air being slowly let out of a balloon. With a tired screenplay that attempts (and fails) to replicate the easygoing fun of the first two movies, uninteresting characters poorly played by bored-looking actors, and some of the cheapest, most perfunctory special effects money can buy, this is a subpar copy of the first movie. It wants to be as fun as what came before but doesn't seem to understand exactly how it got that way, so instead it just copies the formula with a tenth of the budget and talent, and hopes for the best. The audience is then left with a groan-inducing poor movie that tries to pass Michael Gross off as a charismatic leading man despite all the evidence to the contrary. Don't bother with it.

Red Lights
The skeptical psychologist Dr. Margaret Matheson and her assistant, the physician Tom Buckley, are specialists in disclosing fraudulent paranormal phenomena. When the famous psychic Simon Silver reappears to his public after many years of absence, Tom becomes obsessed to investigate whether Silver is a fraud or not. This movie has a really good premise, it builds the story up nicely and has us wondering whether Robert DeNiro's character is a super-human right until the very end...but the ending is appalling, the big reveal is so flat and illogical. Cillian Murphy is great even if through no fault of his own some scenes seem unnecessarily dragged out a little too long. Despite a clumsy script, this is a good movie for 100 minutes, but the final 10 minutes are horrendous and ruins it all.

Brandy for the Parson
Young couple Bill & Petronilla find their yachting holiday turned upside down after a collision with Tony Rackham. For Tony is smuggling Brandy from France to London! And now that he has no boat, the young couple are obliged to help him. With the Customs Office on their tail and their destination seemingly miles and miles away, it will need a lot of fortune to go their way if they are to evade capture and stay out of prison. This comedy tries very hard to be like one of the famous Ealing comedies of the time but somehow doesn't quite hit the heights. The first half is a bit flat to be honest but it perks up a lot during the second half into a rather charming road movie involving ponies and is a very likable movie by the end, although, it feels like they ran out of ideas of how to end it completely satisfactorily. The cast is very good, with solid performances all around by Kenneth More, Charles Hawtrey, James Donald and Jean Lodge. Overall, a nice movie to see with gentle humour.

The Raging Moon
Bruce Pritchard is paralysed mysteriously after his Brothers wedding. Rejected by his family, he is placed in a nursing home. He falls in love with one of the female resident at the home where they happily plan their future but tragedy is about to strike. Ultimately this is just another love story with all the typical plot elements, but the physical disabilities of the protagonists add an interesting twist, and the material is handled well by the cast, the director, and in fact, all concerned. The pacing of the movie is deliberately slow which effectively sets up the mood of the story. Nannette Newman and Malcolm McDowell both deserve to be praised for their acting here. Each of them has their own share of solid drama to handle, and they both do a good job, but McDowell in particular, who perfectly captures the resentment and depression that his character feels. Overall, it is just another romantic drama, but it is still a good movie.

My Soul to Take
In the small town of Riverton, a local legend tells of a serial killer's oath to come back and kill the seven children who were born on the night he supposedly died. Now 16 years later, Riverton residents are disappearing again, making some wonder if the legend is true. Bug, plagued by nightmares all his life, is one of the so-called Riverton Seven, and it's up to him to save his friends from an evil that will not rest. Director Wes Craven has had a really spotty career, full of ups and downs. I was a bit surprised by this movie, because it seemed to be far more derivative and unimaginative than I was expecting. This certainly isn't a bad movie, but it was disappointing, especially for Wes Craven. There were aspects of this movie that I did like, but not enough that I'd give it a good rating. I think that this movie was made for a younger audience. For adults, it's just going to seem a bit tired, clichéd, and a retread of several of his older movies. Set your expectations low.

No Place for Jennifer
A young girl is torn between her mother and father when they divorce who then both remarry. It's effects on her prompt the father to send Jennifer to a school for maladjusted children A powerful movie about the effect divorce has on a child. In this day and age with people divorcing all over the place, it looks dated but still a fantastic performance from Janette Scott as Jennifer who was 10 years old then. This must have been one of the first movies dealing with child trauma and therapy, also introducing modern at the time, methods of dealing with child-neuroses. Well directed and filmed, all the cast does a good job. This was a big hit in it's day and it made Scott a big child star although her career faded as she entered adulthood. It's definitely worth watching this if only for Scott's superb performance.

Last Girl Standing
The only survivor of a brutal massacre, Camryn lives a reclusive life for four years. However, when she starts to put her life back on track, hauntings from the past make her unable to tell if she is going crazy, or if the killer has really returned. An average horror movie. It starts off very good with it being a gory slasher, even if it is a bit cliché, but it was a nice start. Then it just died into an abysmal tedious 45 plus minutes of drama, nonsense talking and scenes that didn't fit. And absolutely nothing happens. Then the last 15 minutes picks up were the beginning left off as a good gory slasher, again even if predictable and cliché. If you want to add this to horror movies that you have seen by all means watch it. It is definitely not the worst. If you choose not to, you are not missing anything.

Fame Is the Spur
A British politician changes from rabble-rouser of the working class to a stodgy Member of Parliament as he gradually abandons all his fine principles on the way up to power. This is a screen version of Howard Spring's novel about an ambitious Labour politician who grows increasingly more right-wing as he moves up the political ladder but then turns conservative. It begins in the late 19th century and ends somewhere around the middle of the 20th. It's a reasonably powerful movie and a somewhat dark one at that. Many have said this movie is loosely based the life of British PM Ramsay Macdonald who was in office for a short while during the 1920's. Michael Redgrave is superb in the lead role and he is ably backed up by the likes of Rosamund John as his suffragette wife as well as the great Bernard Miles, Hugh Burden and Marjorie Fielding. Quite an engrossing political saga even if it goes on for a little bit too long.

Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019)
Following on from The Avengers: Endgame, Peter Parker and his class go on a tour of European cities. Whilst in Venice, a giant being made from water attacks but only to be vanquished by a super-hero named Mysterio. The man behind Mysterio is Quentin Beck who Parker gives a pair of glasses named E.D.I.T.H which was devised by Tony Stark. Unbeknownst to him, Beck is revealed to be a former holographic-illusions specialist at Stark Industries who was fired for his unstable nature. He now leads a team of disgruntled ex-Stark employees, using advanced projector drones to simulate the Elemental attacks and masquerade as a hero. I didn't like Spider-Man: Homecoming that much so I wasn't expecting much from this movie but boy, was I surprised. This is an incredible movie in which everything clicks from the word go - be it the action to the humour and solid storyline. Tom Holland is better this time round as Spider-Man, it's like he's grown into the role. Jake Gyllenhall is fantastic as the illusionist Mysterio. The visual effects are so cool. There are two after credit scenes with one having far reaching consequences for Peter Parker. Expertly crafted and with an unabashed sense of fun, this is a Summer blockbuster you should definitely go and see.

Birds Without Names
Towako is trapped in a dead-end relationship living with Jinji who she despises but he provides food and shelter for her so she persists with him. On the other hand, Jinji, a construction worker who is 15 years her senior, protects and cares for her, cooking, giving her money, doing everything to try to make her happy. Towako is more than a little bitter and unpleasant herself. Nasty and abusive, she still looks back on what she saw as a more idyllic relationship with a man called Kurosaki. When Towako discovers that Kurosaki has been reported missing for five years and starts to notice Jinji following her as she embarks on a new relationship with watch salesman Mizushima, she starts to have suspicions about just how far Jinji might go to keep her for himself. I didn't really think I would enjoy this movie as I hated the characters in the storyline from the whiny Jinji to the bitch Towako but when the plot moved to what happened to Kurosaki and how he has been missing it started to get interesting. All fingers point to Jinji as being the culprit in his disappearance but there's a fantastic twist close to the end when everything is revealed. The movie's darker exploration of loneliness, jealousy and abusiveness in relationships might make this an unpleasant and uncomfortable viewing for some people. Yu Aoi and Sadao Abe are excellent as their characters. This is a great and complex movie with flashbacks and back and forth splices which is well worth checking out.

Wind Chill
Just before their university campus goes quiet for the winter break, a young woman asks a classmate for a lift home. The two students set off on their trip and begin to get to know each other. But, when a reckless motorist drives them off the road, they find themselves stranded in the snow on a remote highway. As the night grows colder, the two are confronted by a horde of menacing apparitions and struggle to escape with their lives. The trailer gave me an impression that I was in for a thrill ride of scares and twists or at least psychological terror. And in that regard the start of the movie does deliver on what is promised. Until the scene where the car goes off the road and the main characters get stranded in the middle of nowhere. What should have been the start of a chilling experience becomes a dull and unimaginative chain of small events. The biggest problem with this movie is that there was no real threat or dread present. The characters have a lot of opportunities to leave the car and walk back to the civilised world. But they never do. They are not restricted by anything other than the cold. Without real danger and creepiness this movie is never scary. It's a shame the two leads who do well in their roles weren't presented with a better script. Wind Chill had the potential to be compelling and terrifying but for some reason the director went down another road and missed an opportunity. You won't miss anything by skipping it.
