Demonwarp
In a cabin in some woods, a man and his daughter are attacked by a Bigfoot like being with the daughter being kidnapped never to be seen again. Months later, a group of young adults arrive at the same cabin and are attacked by the same creature. Unable to escape due to their transport being trashed, they must somehow make it on foot to safety with the creature stalking their every move. A horror movie that has something for everyone: cyborg-vampire extraterrestrial overlords with giant scorpion stingers; shape-shifting sasquatches on murder sprees; zombie drones; demonic cult sacrifices; and loads of totally unnecessary full frontal nudity. This is a very low budget movie which is so bad and bizarre it's actually quite entertaining in it's own little way. The overall style and acting are incredibly cheesy and George Kennedy must have been desperate for work to star in it. The special effects and gore tend to be hit or miss. Some parts are as bad as the acting...while others are actually quite well done such as the transformation scenes. The highlight of this production is definitely the monsters. They are actually pretty well done especially the Bigfoot creature. If you're after a cult classic to watch then give this one a go.

Dr. Crippen
In 1910 London, Dr. Hawley Harvey Crippen stands trial for the murder of his wife. This movie is an effective retelling of a true crime story, bolstered by a typically excellent turn from Donald Pleasence as Dr Crippen. Pleasence makes every facet of his flawed lead his own, and in the end you can truly believe that he is Crippen. He also helps to make Crippen a sympathetic character despite the turn of events that occurs. The format of the movie is kept simple and straightforward, with much of the story told in flashback and courtroom drama making up the rest. The rest of the main cast consists of Samantha Eggar who is beautiful as the youthful mistress, while Coral Browne is so overbearing that you can't help but sympathise with poor Crippen. Worth checking out.

Blood of the Vampire
In 1870's Transylvania, scientist Dr. Callistratus is put to death by villagers who wrongly believe he's a vampire. However, his horribly disfigured henchman, Carl, is on hand to orchestrate a life-saving heart transplant. Revived, Dr. Callistratus makes his way to a remote asylum, which he manages to assume control of. But, realising the operation he underwent has left him with a constant need for blood, the mad doctor looks to his patients for a fresh supply. Made to cash in on Hammer Studio's success during the time, this movie is a bit of a mixed bag, at least in terms of the production: the low budget is evident from the limited number of sets, but what sets! The whole movie looks delicious and colourful with a real Gothic atmosphere that rivals Hammer at their best. The rival producers even hired Hammer man Jimmy Sangster to write the screenplay, which is all about early blood transfusions rather than any real vampirism so if you go in looking for neck-biting antics you'll be sorely disappointed. The pacing is spot on and there's never a boring spot here. The Gothic feel is spot on, with plenty of spooky atmosphere punctuated by sudden moments of the grotesque โ€“ a heart beating on its on in a tank, a limbless body kept alive and a corpse in a block of ice. Donald Wolfit is great as the mad doctor. Vincent Ball is the dashing hero thrown into the chaos, finding himself at the mercy of brutal guards, vicious Dobermans lurking outside the asylum, atrocious conditions, torture, and a creepy hunchback. Other moments of interest include brief appearances from John Le Mesurier as a judge and Bernard Bresslaw as a thief. This movie may have been to rip-off Hammer but still I enjoyed this fun and colourful little romp.

Monster from Green Hell (1957)
A scientific expedition in Africa investigates wasps that have been exposed to radiation and mutated into giant, killing monsters. Dull. Dull. Dull. A better word could not be more apt to describe this turgidly paced movie filled with scenes of folks walking, and walking, and walking some more. Although this movie doesn't last for that long, it feels more like three hours. Sure there's some half-decent stop-motion animated monsters but they are particularly disappointing in comparison to other stop-motion efforts of the era and the stock footage of animals used from a different movie perks things up slightly as well towards the end but aside from those short moments of excitement, well there's lots and lots of walking. Nothing to see here so don't bother with it.

The Blackcoat
During the dead of winter, a troubled young woman embarks on a mysterious journey to an isolated prep school where two stranded students face a sinister threat from an unseen evil force. This is a really slow paced demonic possession movie that never pays off in the end and has a wonky time-line and uneven editing scheme that ultimately makes the movie confusing. There are some fairly creepy and haunting moments, but they never last more than a couple of seconds and are spaced so far out, that you might forget what type of movie you're actually watching. It's a shame too, because there are some excellent actors here too, but the story is less than thrilling. Overall, it's a very bleak and fairly uninteresting movie, however the score by Elvis Perkins was good. I just wish this movie had a bit more to it.

Girl, Interrupted
Set in the changing world of the late 1960's, this is the searing true story of Susanna Kaysen, a young woman who finds herself at a renowned mental institution for troubled young women, where she must choose between the world of people who belong on the inside - like the seductive and dangerous Lisa or the often difficult world of reality on the outside. This movie is worth watching for the superb performances from Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie. Jolie deserved the Oscar she got for her role in this movie of the rebellious wild child Lisa hiding an inner need. Ryder is also great as Susanna and communicates so much without dialogue thanks to her oh so expressive eyes. The supporting cast headed up by Whoopi Goldberg and Vanessa Redgrave is also more than competent. The movie falters though because the plot isn't very defined. Then again that could be by design given that the movie is derived from diary entries. Nevertheless I still very much enjoyed this movie.

Three Men in a Boat
Three friends - George, Harris and J decide to escape from their women problems by going boating on the Thames River. With Oxford, England, as their destination, they set out for the trip of a lifetime. Their idyllic cruise soon becomes anything but when they encounter, among other problems, heavy rain and a sailing regatta. But the gloomy outlook brightens when they meet three young and wealthy women. Seldom have I seen a British comedy movie this bad, no matter that the book it is based on is supposed to be good. It begins OK, but then turns into a bad slapstick movie and dated in every way. The three leads in Laurence Harvey, Jimmy Edwards and David Tomlinson are useless in their roles. There is some eye candy in the form of Shirley Eaton, Jill Ireland and Lisa Gastoni but even they can't save this crapfest. It simply just isn't in any way, shape or form funny. The humour seems forced. The only good thing I liked was the location shooting on the river Thames. It really says something when the little dog that tags along with the 3 main characters acts better than them!! Tedious and unfunny.

Torture Garden
Sideshow psychic Dr. Diabolo predicts the horrific futures of some curious fairground visitors. Wealthy Colin finds himself compelled to murder. Ruthless actress Carla discovers that movie stars have a shocking secret. Lovestruck reporter Dorothy does battle with the spirit of her beloved's dead mother. And greedy Edgar Allan Poe collector Ronald finds out a horrifying truth about his idol after murdering a rival. This is the 2nd anthology horror movie made by Amicus. This isn't their best but it's still entertaining even though the stories are uneven. Story 1 and 4 are easily the best. Story 2 is pretty stupid and story 3 is just ridiculous - the good acting keeps it from completely falling apart. There's very little blood or violence here and the "twist" ending comes as no surprise. Good acting from the majority of the cast with Burgess Meredith and Jack Palance standing out. A good time waster overall.

Absolute Power
While robbing the home of aging billionaire Walter Sullivan, Luther Whitney is interrupted by an amorous couple entering the building. As Whitney hides, he sees Sullivan's young wife, Christy, and the U.S. President, Alan Richmond. When their affection turns violent, Christy is killed by the Secret Service. Although Whitney flees, he is framed for the murder. Now, he seeks justice with the help of detective Seth Frank. This movie has one of the best premises of any thriller I've ever heard of. It's directed by the star of the movie in Clint Eastwood. The first 30 minutes of this are spectacular. Eastwood's simple, straightforward style of direction is perfect in laying out the setting and action that occurs. As he starts to run with Secret Service, police and assassins chasing him, the plot goes a little awry but never into B-movie material. Eastwood is too reformed to be ridiculous and though some scenes may seem too unbelievable or outlandish, they are handled with professionalism so as to make us think they could happen. The cast is outstanding. Eastwood delivers as the smart and slick jewel thief you cannot underestimate, Gene Hackman is good but very underused as the scumbag president, Ed Harris is solid as the fervent police detective and Laura Linney is wonderful as Eastwood's estranged daughter who has serious trust issues with her father. In the end, it may not be one of Clint's best movies but it is a very smart and fun thriller that has its head in the right place.

Terminator: Dark Fate
Sarah Connor and a hybrid cyborg human must protect a young girl from a newly modified liquid Terminator from the future. If you've seen the previous Terminator movies in this franchise, don't expect anything different. There is absolutely nothing new. It's the same story and same plot, except with a female ensemble. Writers, producers, and directors seem to think they can give characters with women or minorities and sell us the same the movie all over again. How stupid do they think we are? I actually sorta liked the first hour of the movie then it went downhill and it was too OTT with the action scenes. The acting is good and it was nice to see Linda Hamilton back as Sarah Connor. It's only just slightly better than the last couple of movies but nowhere near as good as T1 and T2. I'm afraid to say this movie is a big misfire and hopefully they'll end the franchise once and for all.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil
Maleficent travels to a grand old castle to celebrate young Aurora's upcoming wedding to Prince Phillip. While there, she meets Aurora's future mother-in-law -- a conniving queen who hatches a devious plot to destroy the land's fairies. Hoping to stop her, Maleficent joins forces with a seasoned warrior and a group of outcasts to battle the queen and her powerful army. The first movie did some good business to justify a sequel but I suspect there may not be another one. The effects are fine but the script is a mess. The photography is very dark at times and the surprising enjoyment from the first movie isn't present in this one. The cast perform well with Angelina Jolie sparkling as she did in the first movie as Maleficent. For the target audience, this movie ticks all the right boxes but for myself it was just another average Disney production. In the end it's just an OK movie and far from memorable.

Joker
Forever alone in a crowd, failed comedian Arthur Fleck seeks connection as he walks the streets of Gotham City. Arthur wears two masks - the one he paints for his day job as a clown, and the guise he projects in a futile attempt to feel like he's part of the world around him. Isolated, bullied and disregarded by society, Fleck begins a slow descent into madness as he transforms into the criminal mastermind known as the Joker. This backstory about the Joker's origins is good but not the 'movie of the year' as some like to point out. Joaquin Phoenix did his best, tried hard to embody the magnanimous character of Joker, he did pretty well, but sometimes it felt he was just trying too hard. Despite it's unfair to compare him with Heath Ledger I must say he was able to pull it off impressively and takes this Joker to a distinct level. The main problem with this movie is the lack of originality and a precise plot, sometimes it felt like the movie itself was confused and wandering aimlessly! Overall, despite its shortcomings, I enjoyed this movie a lot and it's definitely worth checking out.

Death Wish 4: The Crackdown
Paul Kersey, who is no stranger to vigilante justice, is pulled back into the underworld of Los Angeles when the daughter of his new girlfriend, Karen, dies after an overdose of crack cocaine. Intent on seeing justice served, Paul goes after the kingpin who ultimately supplied the crack. As he hunts down the kingpin's minions, Paul starts taking out a large part of the city's drug-dealing population on a violent killing spree. This is a surprisingly entertaining entry in the series, despite not being directed by Michael Winner who worked on the first 3 movies. Instead of having Kersey just killing muggers and rapists, he takes on an entire drug underworld in a reasonably clever way, by setting up rival drug mobs against each other. The paranoia and confusion between both the drug mobs is exciting and somewhat funny to watch, and the action this time is a little lighter than the 3rd movie but that's balanced out with clever set pieces, suspenseful moments and funny one liners delivered from both Charles Bronson and the supporting cast. A good fun movie for action fans.

The Night Visitor
Wrongly convicted criminal Salem escapes from a mental institution hoping to get revenge on the man who put him there, his brother-in-law Anton. Driven genuinely insane by his time in the institution, Salem plots to commit a series of crimes to frame Anton. Caught up in this murderous scheme is Anton's wife, Salem's sister Ester. The three are thrown together, and the couple must outfox the madman in order to survive. This obscure USA/Sweden co-production has a tale of madness, desperation, revenge, and sinister murder. The movie's chilly, snowbound northern setting (Jutland) is as much a character as the cast themselves, and the story certainly has a unique feel to it: slow, stately, very much like an art-house movie, but with dark revenge/thriller plotting. The movie is also notable for an exemplary cast with Max Von Sydow on top form as the madman Salem with Trevor Howard as a detective. This movie certainly isn't for all tastes and some might even find it a little odd but I found it quite spellbinding at times.

Hundra
The sole survivor and the most powerful of a female tribe of warrior breeders journeys to find a suitable mate. This is a very nicely produced eighties sword and sandal epic that produces its share of entertainment on various levels. Yeah, the entire concept is kinda dumb but its actually one of the better Conan type movies made in that era. The costumes look pretty decent and the on location filming is a big plus. Surprisingly, the fight scenes are better done than one would expect. Laurene Landon in the title role is pretty hot, athletic, does lots of stunts and pulls them off nicely. There isn't much need for acting here so we won't go there. If its slightly campy action and adventure you crave...you could do a lot worse than Hundra.
