The Prime Minister is touring the country with the highest percentage figures of employment and one of the places on his list is Little Hayhoe which tops the list with 99.9% because of the weaving industry. The 0.1% is the local tramp - Irishman Dan Dance who is liked by most residents. However, the local council want him out of the way before the PM arrives so after not paying for his drink at the local pub he is arrested and sent to live in the village almhouse. Filmed in the North Essex village of Thaxted, this is a nearly forgotten 1950's comedy classic full of charm. Watching this movie gives you an insight into a lost world from the past where every village had a pub with one eccentric character inhabiting the place that everyone knew. The movie is full of laughs and has great performances with wonderful comic timing throughout. You'll see Sid James as a grumpy pub owner, Dora Bryan and Thora Hird taking part here. The storyline pokes fun at many things including village life and the way local council administration was (and often still is) carried out; pompousness, hypocrisy and short-sightedness commonly abound in those that 'run the village'. Definitely well worth taking a look.

Battersea housewife Margery lives a life of drudgery in a working class terrace with her feckless husband and her small daughter. Lodging next door with her mother is Harry, a flashy salesman and nightclub owner who repeatedly attempts to seduce Marge. At first showing little interest, Marge finally gives in after he helps find her missing daughter. Harry eventually tires of Marge, and turns his attentions to her younger, educated sister, Jinny. A realistic drama that borders too far on soap opera for my liking yet still offers an interesting insight in to the lifestyle of the working classes of the 60's. Ian Hendry is a total bastard, playing the women in his life for all the thrills he can get, no matter that they're married. Hendry is the pick of the actors in this production with June Ritchie also performing well as the bored housewife who turns to suicide when her lover ends the relationship. It's interesting to see Mike Pratt and Annette Andre in this movie as they would be acting with each other again 5 years down the line in Randall and Hopkirk. Watch out for a small cameo from a young John Hurt as a cafe worker. The outside shots of South London are great and possibly the location for Jubilee Terrace where a lot of the filming was done has been knocked down by now? If you're after a bit of gritty, old fashioned British drama then this movie comes recommended.

Shortly after a movie production wraps and its cast members go their separate ways, the movie's final reel falls out of the back of a truck and goes rolling into the English countryside. Faced with a movie with no climatic scenes, the egotistical director sends production manager Joe Blake to round up the extras so the footage can be reshot the next day. This pleasant British comedy starts slowly, but steadily improves en route to its ironic ending. It's basically a collection of stories revolving around the lives of the extras such as an elderly couple who are having to suffer an uncomfortable living arrangement with their daughter and son-in-law, stopping a boxer from getting his face bashed in a match and enlisting some female groupies to kidnap a pop star from getting married. The sexy and seductive French actress Simone Simon brings a dash of glamour to proceedings. Most of the cast is foreign. Sid James stands out as the boxer determined to win one fight in his life before retiring and he gets to win....thanks to a bribe for his opponent! This isn't a laugh out loud comedy but it makes for a nice 90 mins.

When the king of Gaillardia dies, the tiny nation's resources and location in the Pacific draw the interest of world powers. Great Britain has long enjoyed rights to Gaillardia's mineral deposits. However, the monarch's death places them in jeopardy, necessitating the dispatch of diplomat Carlton-Browne to meet with Prime Minister Amphibulos. Unfortunately, the former's bumbling, the latter's obtuseness and a revolution threaten to undermine everything. Another comedy about a plucky little country struggling through the jungle of the modern global world with only native wit and pluck to guide them, this is a fine entry by the Boulting brothers. Terry-Thomas sparkles as usual in the lead, as a feckless ministry man led to the brink of disaster when a nation he is supposedly in charge of starts attracting the interest of the world, Ian Bannen makes a great romantic lead, Peter Sellers puts in one of his quieter performances as a corrupt politico and the pantomime villain John Le Mesurier plays against type as a rugged revolutionary leader. It's a fun movie and will be enjoyed by all.

A young Chinese girl escapes from her violent Triad father in Hong Kong by stowing away on a ship full of immigrants bound for LA. An ex-gangster and his wife take the girl in under their care but the child's father comes to the US looking for her and kills the wife and then abducts the couple's son. The ex-gangster swears revenge on the Triads. This is a well written, well acted and well made movie which finds Van Damme in good form. One of the intriguing elements here is that Jean-Claude Van Damme is a not so good guy but an ex-gangster who has just retired from working as a bouncer in a club. Van Damme abandons his split kicks and martial arts for guns and unstylish punches which somehow adds to the realism here. While some claim this to be Jean-Claude's best work, I can't quite agree. It's good and better than some of his work from the 00's but it's far from being a Van Damme classic.

Foolhardy campers wind up on the menu at a backwoods cannibal feast. An ultra low budget horror movie obviously shot on a handycam. The plot you've seen countless times before - a typical group of friends who decide to go camping in the woods and end up being victimised by a group of American cannibals (one of which wears a pilot's visor and mask). Sure, the gore is cheap and the acting atrocious but at least the filmmakers try their best with what they had so I'll give them that at least. Watch it only if you are a fan of ultra low budget and trash overall.

Rika has an ability to see dead people. When 3 ghosts of teenage girls appear before her and ask that she help them extract revenge on those that murdered them, Rika agrees on the condition that they do not kill them. This is one of those silly Japanese horror comedies from Noboru Iguchi who has directed and written such bat shit crazy movies as The Machine Girl and Dead Sushi. This movie isn't as gore heavy as some of his classics but it's still entertaining with it's insane and goofy storyline. For example, one of the ghost girls that would like to be reincarnated as a dog the next time she's reborn produces a puppet mutt on her arm so that she can attack her murderers!! Despite being a fun movie, it does go on a little bit too long with it's flashback sappy saccharine moments of the 3 girls in their past lives. With some solid wacky ghost action and a lot more emotion than expected for something like this, this movie has plenty to like and is a good outing for fans of Iguchi.

In the English countryside, Sarah Rexton, recently blinded in a horse riding accident, moves in with her uncle's family and gallantly adjusts to her new condition, unaware that a killer stalks them. After her former boyfriend Steve presents Sarah with a new horse and suggests they resume their romance, she returns home and discovers the bodies of her murdered relatives. A cat and mouse game commences as the sightless woman evades the killer while trying to learn his identity. This is a bit of a slow burn but is worth the watch. Mia Farrow delivers a fine performance, she is the best thing about this movie as the blind girl Sarah. There are plenty of effective moments of terror on offer. Sarah is unaware that her family members have been murdered, unable to see the corpses scattered around the house but the viewer can see them and it really is quite horrific. Great camera work, good cast - some very familiar faces to British audiences in particular. The identity of the killer is not revealed until the end, with a red herring thrown in. The viewer only sees his cowboy boots for most of the movie. A pretty good little thriller that is worth seeing.

Set during the early years of WWII, a group of entertainers known as ENSA who go around the troops and give them a varierty show to make them forget about the war become involved with a stuffy Major who doesn't want them anywhere near him and his boys. This movie is going to be of instant appeal thanks to the appearance of the likes of Sid James and Dora Bryan in leading roles. It serves as both an affectionate tribute to ENSA and a comedy of sorts. Yes, the humour is broad and the entertainment value is patchy; but then so it was with ENSA too, so it all makes sense! Much of the jokes come at the expense of Alfred Marks as the stuffy Major. The best part of the movie is when the entertainers end up foiling a genuine German plot spearheaded by Marius Goring which is funny. It's a shame that the lovely Liz Frazer disappears around half way through and is never seen again in the movie. It's not a classic movie by any means but still worth a watch.

In the India of the 1920's, British police officer Freddy Young strongly opposes his government's harsh treatment of local tribes. One of the tribe leaders, Sultan, resolves to deliver his people from their bondage. Although the British officers regard Sultan as a dangerous criminal, Young recognises him as a fellow idealist and an enemy to respect. Young's admiration for the tribal chief conflicts with his assignment to capture the rebel. This is a sort of British Western that doesn't take place in the U.S, has no native American characters or white guys with American accents but this movie is undoubtedly a western that has been relocated from the American plains to British run India. It is by no means rubbish but it is rather dull and overlong at times. The movie does contain some gun battles and fist fights so it's not exactly a total bore and one scene with a fugitive hiding down a well does contain some suspense. Most of the outside filming took place in Spain and not India. Yul Brynner as Sultan and Trevor Howard as Young are fine in their roles though some of the dialog is poor. There's also a ridiculous romantic interest between 54 year old Howard and 21 year old Charlotte Rampling. This movie works as a run-of-the-mill western but it's nothing spectacular.

A young boy is kidnapped and placed in a room in a house somewhere in London with a ticking time bomb stuffed inside a toy gollywog which is set to go off the next day at 10am unless the kidnapper is given some money and a plane ticket to South America. A taut and fast paced thriller which doesn't waste any time with it's sparkling script and tight direction from Lance Comfort. The plot is tidy and unfussy and proceeds well towards its somewhat novel conclusion. Robert Shaw is excellent as the disturbed kidnapper, Marlow, and sterling support is provided by John Gregson as the police inspector. Nice cameo bit by William Hartnell as Robert Shaw's father. There's suspense in spades here, alongside plot twists you won't see coming. It's a pity that B-movie thrillers like this one are so little known as this sort of movie more than holds its own against modern fare. A worthwhile watch.

A boy called Charlie is enchanted with a green Wedgwood vase at the British Museum and grows up to become an antique dealer but his business isn't going quite so well until he hears about a room full of Wedgwood in a country mansion up for demolition and that a vase might be amongst the finds there. This quaint comedy is the story of an ordinary man who has an obsession through his life about something he saw in his childhood and is determined to get his hands on one. It's not a dramatic movie at all but a gentle comedy with interesting and likable characters who help him in his search. It has the flavour of an Ealing movie. Peter Finch is great as Charlie and he captures well the longing he has for the vase. He loves his wife and children but there is also this itch he can't get rid of until the vase is in his hands. Scottish redhead Adrienne Corri is stunning as the woman who will not sell the vase to Peter until she gets the right price for it. An entertaining movie that has a beguiling charm about it.

Captain Vinka Kovelenko defects from Russia, but not for political reasons. She defects because she feels discriminated against as a woman. Captain Chuck Lockwood gets the order to show her the bright side of capitalism, while she tries to convince him of the superority of communism. Naturaly, they fall in love, but there's still the KGB, which doesn't like the idea of having a defected Russian officer running around in London. This movie is by no means one of the classics in any sense: it's entertaining, occasionally very funny, but nothing spectacular. What's odd, and possibly most positive, about this Cold War comedy (written and produced at the height of tensions between the US and the USSR) is that there is no moralising or preaching. No propaganda. In the end, it's simply a romantic comedy about opposites attracting. Katharine Hepburn is great as Vinka - her trademark energy barely reined in, her Russian accent is a little OTT but passable. Bob Hope as Chuck Lockwood gets his typical wisecracking quips in. Supporting characters include James Robertson Justice and Sid James with more hair than usual. A bizarre, but interesting movie if you want to see Hepburn speaking in a Russian accent and examining a pushup bra with a look of utmost disdain on her face!!

A brilliant documentary charting Liam Gallagher's comeback as a solo artist. It begins with the Paris gig in 2009 when Noel walked out on Oasis citing differences with Liam then goes on to the under appreciated years of the group Beady Eye which Liam thought might have been as big as Oasis but never came close and then his current solo career that has seen Liam getting his groove back. He is honest about the mistakes he's made in the past and he just seems a different chilled out man altogether from his wild days in Oasis. There are opinions about Liam from his current girlfriend, his mother and brother Paul along with former bandmate Bonehead. As an Oasis fan I loved it and I'm happy that Liam is back at his best again. Highly recommended.

A hypochondriac working as an airport baggage handler is forced to confront his fears when a British teenager with a terminal illness enlists him to help her carry out her eccentric bucket list. I only watched this as I liked Maisie Williams on Game of Thrones but this is such a cringy movie. The whole dying girl scenario has been done to death many times and this one tries to be different but ultimately fails. The script is incredibly cheesy and Maisie Williams tries too hard as a dying girl because she comes across as annoying instead. It's embarrassing to watch her act in this movie truth be told. The worst culprit of all and somebody viewers should know when they see his name down on the cast that it's gonna be a crap movie is Ken Jeong as a policeman. Ever since his breakout role in The Hangover he's been nothing short of bad and he's awful in this one too. The so-called comedy moments just aren't funny. It feels like the script was written by a novice. There have been far better movies with this subject matter than this one so do yourself a favour and skip it.
