A powerful and thought provoking documentary that gives a special message to everybody on the planet - that it we don't stop abusing the world we live in, it's possible if we carry on the way we do that 50% of the species that exist could become extinct in less than 50 years time. It paints a bleak picture which doesn't bode well for us as human beings either. With magnificent footage of nature and animals and devastating footage of the destruction of nature, this documentary does a brilliant job blending the beauty and the loss of the natural world with the solutions to preserving it. It also follows several activists as it tries to save endangered species from ending up on the food table or as medicine in Asia. No matter how you look at it, the natural world is in serious trouble and we are to blame for it. This is a must see documentary that should be shown in schools everywhere. The clock is ticking down but it's not too late to save ourselves and the world around us.

A brilliant Spanish psychological thriller about a creepy looking concierge who drugs an attractive woman in her own apartment every night so that he can sleep with her. It makes for an unsettling experience as it plays on the small fears that people have, having someone bluntly invade your privacy without you knowing it. The story is original and clever and the acting is spot on especially by Luis Tosar who plays the concierge. This movie takes the viewer to the darker places of their emotions and thoughts, but not in an obvious blunt way like most horror movies, but in a deceptive and clever way. There are some deeply unforgettable moments that will stay with you for a while. An effective and uneasy movie that far excels anything Hollywood could offer these days. Don't miss out on it.

This was the precursor movie to the shortlived ITV series The Shillingbury Tales. It harks back to the cosy Sunday night drama that started with All Creatures Great & Small and later with The Darling Buds Of May. The storyline revolves around a small idyllic village in England with a famous pop star coming to live there and taking over conducting the brass band which is full of old people. They play absolutely terrible together. One of the band members asks the others to sabotage the way they usually play but in actuality it makes them sound even better and more unique!
The cast is led by Robin Nedwell (best known for being in the various Doctor comedy series of the 70's) and Trevor Howard. Comedian Jack Douglas plays a serious role for a change. The movie was filmed on location in the beautiful village of Albury in Hertfordshire and some of the shots are breathtaking. I've no idea if the place still looks the same now as it did then as it's what I would call the quintessential English village. If you love quaint and gentle English comedy dramas you're bound to love this.

A Japanese movie that totally scrambles your brain. Set in the 1920's, it's a story about a young man, Ichiro Kure, who wakes up in an asylum cell with no memory of who he is or how he got there but apparently he killed his bride to be the night before their wedding. Two doctors at the asylum connect his problem to his Chinese ancestor who killed his wife and painted her decomposing body in exactly the same way.
It's hard to know what exactly is going on in this movie. Is Ichiro imagining everything in his brain or are they fragments of his memory? The movie started out quite interesting but gets dull quite quickly as there's a lot of overlong talking going on with not that much happening. A person who has the patience might like it as the storyline offers a piece of the puzzle one at a time but not for the viewer to solve things but rather to watch it all play out. It seems that the two doctors are using Ichiro as a pawn. My interest in this movie was long gone before the end credits because there's no real structure to the story. I didn't really like this at all and unless you're a fan of mindfuck movies you won't too.

Students and faculty members at Jinsai Medical University become inflicted with a mysterious disease that kills its victims instantly.
After a 9 year break, director Sogo Ishii returned in 2012 with this baffling and painfully dull comedy horror movie. It starts out boring following a group of people (mostly students) talking about urban myths and possibly something being hidden in a basement room before one by one they start dying in mysterious circumstances. Now normally you'd think this movie would then have somebody trying to get to the bottom of this outbreak but it doesn't. The characters are all odd and strangely enough don't want to be left out if the rest are dying. I'm not sure what kind of comedy horror this was supposed to be but it sure isn't a laugh out loud one! To be honest I couldn't wait for this movie to finish. There was nothing in it for me. It's basically just about a group of uninteresting people that die. A waste of nearly 2 hours of my time.

Watched the first My Tutor Friend movie years ago so had to watch this one. It's got a different storyline and a new cast. It revolves around a Japanese exchange student Junko Kitano coming to Korea because she is trying to find a Korean man she used to know. This Korean comedy has got the usual drama and laughs that follows the same old routine in these kind of movies. Not that there's anything wrong with that. The characters are funny and there's a token white guy from France amongst them as well who's annoying. The plot wasn't completely smooth and full of cliches, and it had a fair few holes in it too but it was still enjoyable. A fun comedy overall.

A lot of good things has been said about this Taiwanese drama about a 45 year old woman whose life is spiralling downhill (her daughter hates her, the husband ignores her and lives in Shanghai and she even loses her job at a textile factory). Lonely and feeling abandoned, she connects with a man who has injured his eyes at a hospital where she is looking after her mother in law.
The main problem with this movie is it's boring, like watching paint dry on a wall! I just couldn't connect or even care for what was happening to the woman played by Shiang-chyi Chen. The only thing I liked about the movie was the cinematography but apart from that I didn't enjoy it at all. I'm sure there are some people that will get something from this movie. Sadly I'm not one of them.

Christopher Nolan's telling of the evacuation of troops from the port of Dunkirk in France during 1940 is not the masterpiece that many are saying it is. If you're under the impression of having your mind blown by the next great wartime classic of our generation, then you may be slightly disappointed. I admit I was in this group. The movie takes place from the POV of three main characters - a pilot, a civilian boat captain, and a soldier. The German soldiers are basically never seen - but when they attack the scenes are really harrowing. Nolan does an amazing job with the battle scenes and the epic score that holds the suspense together. But the story never really explores any of the character's enough to have a huge emotional reaction to their success or failures to succeed. Overall there are certain aspects of this movie that are really good but I don't think it really is a must see movie.

Shadowlands is the true story of the author CS Lewis and his relationship with the American writer Joy Gresham. This is a beautiful movie, set mostly in the lovely English countryside around Oxford in the mid 50's. The period is well depicted, and you feel that you have stepped back slightly in time. The script is brilliant. Emotional issues are handled with great intelligence, and comic touches help to lighten what is sometimes a very dark story. The acting is excellent. Anthony Hopkins' portrayal of Lewis is sensitive without being weak. Debra Winger hits all the right notes in her portrayal of Joy, brash and bold, yet with a better understanding of emotion than the more sensitive Lewis. Edward Hardwicke does a nice job with Warnie, Lewis' brother giving us a performance that makes us wish we knew more about him. I'm sure many will get teary-eyed with a scene right near the end. Well worth watching.

The movie was inspired by true events set in the 1970's. It was about a Neapolitan Mafia Boss Tanny Zampa who ran a French extortion gang in Marseille, France who then started to buy heroin from Turkey being flooded into New York by the French mafia. It was a dedicated judge Pierre Michel who raged bloody war against Zampa's empire.
This is a very well made good guys vs bad guys drama with some action scenes mixed in. The director takes us back to the 70's with the sets and costumes rendered to perfection in every last detail. We see the two leading characters in their worlds of business and family. The pace of this movie is fast between paralleling the two principles' activities and chronicling the confrontations. It inevitably tells of their rise and fall too. The 2 hours plus running time goes quickly and it never dips into being boring to watch. Superb acting by Jean Dujardin as Michel and Gilles Lelouche as his nemesis Zampa. Overall, this is a solid movie and a showcase of how good French cinema can be.

This is a taut thriller about a war crimes detective who heads to a small town to hunt down a Nazi criminal who has escaped justice. Orson Welles plays the Nazi who has hidden himself as a college professor and married a local woman. Edward G Robinson is the dogged detective who will not give up on catching his Nazi. Welles provides menace as the net is slowly closed in on him and even his naive wife when told that her husband might be a war criminal refuses to believe it. It all builds up to a great finale in a church tower. Excellent acting all round by the cast. A fantastic film noir.

A forgotten Brit gangster movie largely due to the fact that Michael Caine's Get Carter came out in the same year. Richard Burton plays a nasty and violent piece of work by the name of Vic Dakin (supposedly based on Reggie Kray). Burton tries his best at perfecting a cockney accent but can often be seen fumbling through his lines. Good use of location filming in London itself and the now sadly demolished West Pier at Brighton. Burton does well as the mother loving homosexual psychopath and there's a large supporting cast which includes Ian McShane, Colin Welland and Donald Sinden as a sleazy, blackmailed MP. Surprised to see that comedy writers Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais did the script to this movie. This is a good gritty gangster movie which deserves to be seen by more people.

Havana Segrand is an actress trying to mount a comeback. She wants to star in a remake of a movie her mother was in but is struggling in trying to convince the director she is the best choice. When Agatha Weiss arrives in town and becomes her new assistant things begin to change, not only for them but for the entire city and industry.
This is a movie I really enjoyed, but it is not for everyone. The acting is great and the writing is very intelligent, but the movie itself is very dark. It's a David Cronenberg movie so that should give you an idea of what to expect from this. Julianne Moore gives an amazing performance and this is a movie that is almost impossible to predict what will happen. I really enjoy movies that stay one step ahead of me. This is a movie that you can't talk too much about without giving things away but this is a movie that I think deserves to be seen. Overall, great acting and writing but a very dark and moody movie. If you think you can handle it than give it a shot.

An alien is punished by his own kind and sent to be exiled on Earth in a human body. The only problem is his human head seems to explode sometimes so he has to take another human head as a replacement!
What a weird and strange horror this is. Totally bonkers! The script is quite clever and the movie has plenty of amusing moments. Impressive make-up effects by Kevin Yagher and plenty of gore help but only to a certain extent. Runs too long and tends to drag out a bit, especially towards the end. I'm sure you'll find this movie unintentionally funny (I'm sure it's not supposed to be a comedy?). An odd choice of movie for the director given that he made the excellent Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer previous to this.

In the sequel to Library Wars, one of the Library Defence Force staff Komaki is detained by the Media Task Force for recommending a book to a deaf girl. It is deemed unsuitable for disabled people. The LDF are angered by this arrest and try and get Komaki free.
The first Library Wars movie was fairly good and this movie continues the story of the struggle between the LDF who don't want censorship for any books and the MTF who use any excuse to ban books which they don't like. The same cast also return with Nana Eikura being the lead as the cute and rather naive at times Iku Kasahara. The same atmosphere and humour is maintained as well. It builds to a satisfactory ending with a cliffhanger that is resolved in the 3rd and final movie The Last Mission. Looking forward to seeing that.

Tsui Hark (director) and Stephen Chow (writer/producer) team up for this sequel to the 2013 movie. It has an all new cast and the only person returning for a small cameo is actress Shu Qi. Whilst the story may not match it's predecessor it is still entertaining nevertheless. It has Stephen Chow's sense of humour and imagination throughout. The visuals are amazing with lots of lush colours used. The chemistry between the 4 main characters are great and produce many laughs. I didn't think there was enough action and never felt the heroes were in any real danger from the demons shown in the movie. It's a good popcorn movie - there's nothing special about it but it's enjoyable.

I was expecting this to be a fun Japanese zombie horror comedy but it's not and instead of concentrating on the threat from a lone zombie trapped inside a house, it's more or less a character driven movie about 6 individuals with hidden agendas discussing how to deal with the zombie. Although there's some gore around the hour mark, for a zombie movie it's relatively blood free. The majority of the story has the characters arguing with each other in the living room of a house which I found rather dull. I did think that things would pick up as everybody starts turning on one another but sadly it never happened. This movie didn't engage me at all. I understand that the director would want to approach a zombie comedy in a different way from other movies but somehow it didn't quite turn out as planned. It was a complete waste of 90 mins
