Mai has moved to the country from Tokyo to live with her mother. She enrols at the local high school where she meets Shino, one of her new classmates but they have a history because in junior high Shino was bullied by Mai's friends whilst she watched from the sidelines. Now the tables are turned and Mai finds herself bullied by her classmates with Shino being the main instigator behind all of it.
An interesting high school drama about bullying which is rife in Japan's high schools and one of the main reasons that many teenagers commit suicide. I don't think there's been a Japanese teen movie where the bullied becomes the bully so this is a nice and fresh slant. I can understand why Shino wants to get revenge on Mai but she becomes slightly unhinged with the measures she takes out on her. It doesn't surprise me that teachers turn a blind eye to bullying and let all this abuse carry on in this movie. I think that's been one of the main criticisms of the Japanese school system for so long. The acting is great from the young female cast and it builds up to a good conclusion. Definitely worth checking out.

A British officer and an American man go deep inside the South American jungles to try and find a relic The Golden Cobra which if it should fall into the wrong hands could potentially bring about world instability due to it's magical properties.
Director Antonio Margheriti tries to make a cheap rip-off of Indiana Jones here. It's a fairly good b-movie with some nice action set pieces. It seems the kitchen sink has been included in the storyline as it has plane crashes, car chases, truck explosions, wild shootouts, fistfights, spiders, eerie snake pits, romance, violent aboriginal tribes, black magic, poisonous darts, volcano eruptions, death traps, double-crossing plus some dry humour courtesy of the British officer played by John Steiner. The movie goes at a fair pace and as so much is going on it never gets boring. It's not a bad Indy rip-off and you could do far worse than checking this movie out.

A British classic movie about a youngster who is expelled from a naval academy over a petty theft, and his parents raise a political furor by demanding a trial. There are several reasons why this movie is so good. Firstly, three brilliant actors in the cast: Cedric Hardwicke as the father of the accused; Robert Donat, who had another definitive role in this to add to Mr Chips; and the lovely Margaret Leighton, as the suffragette Winslow daughter Catherine who isn't at all militant. Secondly, the plot, which manages to weave quite a few threads along with the central story of little Ronnie Winslow and the stolen postal order. And lastly, because of the sparkle and energy of the script and the detail put into every frame. It's a wonderful movie to watch.

A well made, low budget documentary produced and presented by George Galloway, former Labour MP and scourge of Tony Blair's New Labour. The movie obviously focuses on Blair's role in the invasion of Iraq in 2003 and its aftermath, followed by his role as a Middle East 'peace envoy'. Blair's actions in supporting George Bush's drive for war in Iraq are well known and documented already and so most of the footage or analysis offers nothing new.
What is more interesting is the details of Blair's other exploits both during and after his time as British Prime Minister. These include his relationships with banks such as JP Morgan who employed Blair as an adviser or big business, such as Rupert Murdoch's media empire who Blair cosied up to. The documentary's strongest point is in detailing the vast amounts of money Tony Blair has made since leaving office through various speaking engagements and advisory roles to big businesses and violent dictators. It's disgusting what this man has gotten away with over the years. Watch this and feel embarrassed to be British.

A very funny Irish comedy about 2 young chavs from Cork who steal a couple of bikes and head to the West Coast where a ship has capsized and tons of cocaine worth 440m Euros has come ashore. They aim to take the stash in order to make some money and escape their mundane lives.
This movie is based on the real life events of 2007 with Ireland's biggest ever drugs bust, but the rest is pure invention and it has to be said border line genius. The two lads are perfect foils for each other and the dialogue is gratifyingly stupid and inventive in equal abundance. It's the sort of movie that you will probably need to watch more than once simply because you will miss so much from laughing. It's great fun to watch and the two leads that were cast are fantastic. A thoroughly enjoyable Irish road trip comedy.

The 2 previous Apes movies were enjoyable so naturally I had high hopes for this one. Unfortunately, despite really wanting to like it, the movie was a disappointment. It is a long way from being a terrible movie but out of the trilogy this is by far the weakest by quite a long way. The CGI effects and the performance of Andy Serkis as Caesar are great. Caesar has always been a hugely relatable and complex character and is much more compelling than any of the human characters here. One really roots for him. The first 15-20 mins were promising but it went downhill after that. The script is also very messy, lacking the intelligent simplicity of the other 2 movies and instead resorting to awkwardness and cheesiness. The pacing became incredibly dull and stayed that way for most of the movie, seriously struggling to sustain the overlong running time. All in all, the movie looks amazing but it is really boring.

I'm a big fan of James Bond movies, and, for all intents and purposes, this is the female equivalent. The story occurs in 1989 Berlin, with the back-drop of the Berlin Wall coming down, and the Iron Curtain beginning to crumble. The fight scenes are gritty, intense, and realistic, the action swift and surprising, and the accompanying soundtrack, some of the best tunes from the 80's, adds a dimension of energy that soundtracks rarely achieve. The lead character, Broughton, is expertly played by Charlize Theron. In keeping with the James Bond tradition, there's plenty of glamour, drinking, unusual characters, and romance, albeit Broughton is bisexual, which adds a twist. There's a dizzying array of cross and double-cross intelligence agents who, at times, are simultaneously trying to help Broughton and kill her. She's brave, indomitable, and a hell of a fighter whether you like her or not as a person. Sexy, brooding, dark, and sharply executed, if you like the world of espionage, and the people dedicated enough to play the game, you'll really appreciate this very fine movie.

I was never a fan of The League Of Gentlemen when it first aired way back in 1999 but over the years I've come to appreciate it. The bizarre and grotesque characters of bleak fictional town Royston Vasey make the jump to to the big screen. They enter reality looking for their creators when they hear that their series will be coming to an end. The movie is well executed with some great special effects and makeup and some hilarious cameos. Actors and writers Mark Gatiss, Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith do a fine job. The humour is definitely over the top and the story is larger than life and full of comedies of errors but once you know what to expect, it's much easier to enjoy this morbidly funny ride.

A nice Danish zombie movie which doesn't stray from the tried and tested formula of the genre. It's capably written, nicely filmed, and well performed by its actors, and there is genuine suspense once its zombies are allowed to run amok. It will hold your attention as a kind of "slow burn" horror movie. The characters are a bit too subdued/lethargic as their world becomes unhinged with their survival increasingly in doubt. All said not a bad little movie, pretty good actually. Obviously a small budget but think it worked in their favour, worth a watch

This documentary edited by Martin Scorsese no less shows highlights of Elvis Presley touring the USA (with much use of the then-trendy split-screen technique); interesting in itself, this also served as the iconic singerโs cinematic swan-song. Of course, his inflated appearance by this time โ a far cry from his lean early years, seen intermittently throughout via stock footage โ is rather sad to witness but, at least, he seemed to be in good spirits. The viewer is shown Elvis performing in front of several different hysterical audiences โ at one point, even admitting to still getting stage fright before going on โ but also get to see him relax with his backing musicians. The musical numbers performed include very few of his hits. Overall though I was reasonably entertained throughout.

Another sensationalist documentary about the animal agriculture industry and it's impact on global warming in that methane gas released by cows into the atmosphere is 4 times worse than pollutants from cars and fossil fuels. Kip Andersen tries to get to the bottom of why all these environmental organisations such as Greenpeace refuses to tell it's supporters about limiting animal agriculture in order to help our planet. It's incredible finding out that the destruction of the Amazon rainforest is because landowners want to use it for grazing livestock and those that have spoken out against it have been killed. The only blemish I have on this movie is the vegan bias and whilst I admire Kip on changing his eating lifestyle for the good of the planet I'm afraid asking the majority of the world to do the same will be impossible. A fascinating and eye opening documentary though which deserves to be seen by everyone.

The 3rd and final movie in the Dexter Riley trilogy starring Kurt Russell. Although the weakest of the three movies, there is still plenty of laughs to be had. This time the story is about an accidentally discovered formula that gives a person temporary super strength. News of the formula comes to the attention of one of Dexter's arch enemy and villain AJ Arno who is fresh out of jail. This movie would be a fitting tribute to Joe Flynn as Dean Higgins who tragically died after filming had finished. Kurt Russell is his usual funny self as the perpetually in trouble Dexter but is curiously absent from the middle section of the movie. A great family movie.

Dani is the sister of a bike courier who is killed in a hit and run after he witnesses a murder during a drop-off. The person that killed him could be on the GoPro footage stuck to his helmet but that has disappeared from the scene of the crime. It's up to Dani to get the footage and find how that connects to a seedy politician.
This could be compared to the Joseph Gordon-Levitt vehicle Premium Rush but that is a superior movie to this one. Not that there's anything wrong with this movie but it's a different kettle of fish and hasn't got the adrenaline rush action scenes to match. It's still a good movie though with a gorgeous leading actress in Poldark's Eleanor Tomlinson. The movie has got a nice brisk pace to it with a couple of twists and the bike chases on show are decent but not spectacular. A fairly good British thriller.

Mel Gibson is superb as the recovering alcoholic and criminal with a heart. Devoted to his daughter, whom he neglected when she was a child, Gibson's character reunites with her now in her early twenties and deep in trouble after she has shot her boyfriend who is a part of a drugs cartel. With some excellent scenic background in the American Southwest, the movie unfolds as the father and daughter renew their acquaintance in a series of action scenes. One of the strengths of the film is the dialogue with witty banter between Mel Gibson and Erin Moriarty. The great supporting cast rounds off a good acting ensemble. After a couple of years in the wilderness, this is a very good comeback for Mel Gibson.

A fascinating film noir with a plot that eerily foreshadows what would happen 9 years later in Dallas. The President Of The United States is scheduled to step off a train in the small town of Suddenly before driving off to Los Angeles but a trio of contract killers have taken a family hostage in a nearby house on a hill and armed with a sniper rifle are going to kill the President.
This tense well-crafted and well paced little thriller dispenses with frills or padding, and tells its story in a straightforward way that works pretty well. Once it sets up the story, it maintains the tension carefully enough to make up for some plot holes and one-dimensional characters. Frank Sinatra is brilliant as a crazed cold blooded assassin who gradually loses his composure as the clock ticks down to the hour when the train in scheduled to arrive. I really enjoyed this movie. Recommended.

How disappointing was this movie. From the title and the poster you'd expect to see werewolves on motorbikes but you don't! The movie is about a group of rough and tough bikers who find a satanist church, eat some of their bread and wine then get cursed after trashing the place and punching the lights out of the satanists. There's a teaser that something strange is going on when a couple of the gang get killed each night when they camp out but to see some of the members transform into werewolves you have to wait until right near the very end of the movie. I did find myself incredibly bored by the whole thing. The ending was quite convoluted and make little sense which didn't help my overall opinion of the movie. If you are a biker or a fan of the biker exploitation genre, it might be worth a watch. But then again, maybe not. If you are looking for horror, look elsewhere.
