Jigsaw

Jigsaw
A wonderful taut police drama about a woman who has been found murdered and parts of her dismembered body are found in a suitcase at a house. Two detectives are set the task of finding her killer. Starring Jack Warner, this is as far from the cosy atmosphere of the BBC drama Dixon Of Dock Green (Warner played PC George Dixon for 21 years) as you can get. Director Val Guest makes the city of Brighton quite a sinister and seedy place and does a good thing in keeping the identity of the killer a secret until right near the climax. This gripping movie keeps the viewer in the loop as each part of the jigsaw falls into place. The standard of acting is generally high and Warner is excellent as Detective Inspector Fellows. This movie is certainly a very good yarn and highly entertaining.

Princess Madam
A great Girls With Guns movie. A woman is scheduled to testify in court against a Triad boss and 2 female cops are assigned to protect her. During an attempt on the woman's life, one of the assassins witnesses her husband being killed by the cops and vows revenge. Full of non stop action and bullets flying everywhere, this is a good showcase of Moon Lee's talents as an action star. She isn't the main star however, as the story focuses more on Sharon Yeung who is torn between helping her father (a part of a Triad gang) and upholding the law as a cop. Lee and Yeung are great together as a team but also get to fight one another near the climax. Michiko Nishiwaki is also added to the mix as a badass assassin. There is one case of director Godfrey Ho screwing up a fight scene when it begins in the middle of the night and suddenly changes into it being daylight all of a sudden! It looks stupid and doesn't make any sense. Asian action fans should enjoy this movie with it's martial arts, pyrotechnics and gunplay.

Destruction Babies
Taira is a young man on a path of destruction. He likes nothing better than picking a fight. The story follows Taira as he makes his way into town, picking a fight with literally any male he comes into contact with. He provokes, encourages and goads any would-be opponents to hit him, taking some beatings, but always coming back for more. Without a thought in his mind, like a rabid dog, he only wants to fight. His rage of destruction leaves a trail and soon gains him attention, picking up the cowardly Yuya along the way, an irritating accomplice that films his actions and beats up those weaker than him (usually women). This movie doesn't even try to make any sense of why Taira is doing what he does. It's like he's lost all sense of the world and is like a drugged up zombie with only one purpose in mind: fight, fight and fight some more. There is tons of mindless violence in the movie and the punch ups make for uncomfortable viewing. You can hear the sound of the blows during the fist fights and the close ups of bloody faces as punches connect. This movie supposedly offers an insight into young Japanese adults that feel no connection with society and the people around them. Quite a unique movie in the end that you won't forget quickly.

Dry Rot

Dry Rot
This comedy based on a stage play is a so and so farce about a trio of dodgy bookmakers stealing a horse from a field in order to use the animal in a race and a betting scam. I was expecting this to be a very funny movie but proper laughs are few and far between. Whilst the comedy is fun to start with, it actually becomes tiring before the movie is even close to finishing. There's a great cast here which includes the always reliable Sid James, Ronald Shiner, Brian Rix and a very young Joan Sims. Peggy Mount very nearly steals the movie in a small scene in which she appears as a policewoman. This was probably a fun movie when it was released and might prove to be a hit for those that watched it back then but now it just looks tired with it's annoying farce.

Baby Driver
What an exhilarating movie! Edgar Wright's Baby Driver is an accelerated non-stop action-thriller that will have you in high-gear the entire drive time. Wildly entertaining! It offers up the best car chases, excellent characters, and displays solid writing in this subgenre of action movies. From the very first scene, this is such an enticing movie. It has an oddness to it that is so charming and fun, with a main character that makes you love his quirks. On top of that, it is well shot, directed and acted. With a general plot that is not all too original but it's the characters and the style of the movie that takes it far away from something ordinary. So besides the main character, what else makes the movie great? Well, the supporting characters are really good as well which includes Jamie Foxx, Kevin Spacey, Jon Hamm and the gorgeous Lily James. The soundtrack is to die for. Everything this movie needed to do for me, it delivered. Great action, great characters, great soundtrack. It's an extremely fun movie, I had a blast with it and so will you.

Battle for Sevastopol
A rather misleading title as this isn't an action-filled war movie at all but rather a biography of the greatest female sniper of all time with a confirmed kill list of 309 during WWII. Due to the limited budget, there are only a couple of battle scenes but they are done competently enough. I liked the main character Liudmyla Pavlychenko nicknamed Lady Death. A bit of a badass with a rifle. She was initially tepid about killing but warmed to the task - to the point of actually relishing in it. The movie follows her transformation from a studious girl, who was never appreciated by her stern military father, to a killing machine (who refused to leave the battlefield, even when seriously wounded). Yulia Peresild portrays Pavlychenko very well indeed. If you come into watching this expecting a big war movie you'll come away disappointed but for those who want the life story of a tough Russian woman who was very handy with a rifle you might get something out of it.

Force Majeure
A family vacation in the French Alps takes an unexpected turn when, while lunching on a veranda overlooking the ski slopes, a controlled avalanche goes wrong and the cafรฉ is threatened. Tomas grabs his phone and goes scurrying for protection, while his wife Ebba covers the kids and calls for his help. While the avalanche turns out harmless and the family members are physically fine, the emotional shockwaves of Tomas' actions reverberate through the family. Writer/director Ruben Ostland delivers an intriguing and thought-provoking look at gender roles and the definition and expectations of masculinity, especially within a family. What makes a real man? What is a hero? And what happens to a relationship when the foundation of respect crumbles? Tomas spirals into a great depression as his cowardice is told to their friends. Most of the cast members are unknown to myself apart from one man who plays one of the Wildlings in Game of Thrones. Excellent acting all round from the cast. Lovely shots of the scenery of snow cover mountains added to the drama of the story. It's a movie about real people in a real (screwed up) situation. It's worth watching, just so you can answer the question: what type of person would you be (or think you would be) in this type of situation?

Garden State
This was Zach Braff's debut as a writer and director of a movie. The plot may not be all that original, it isn't all that flawless, but it has a unique and sincere quality which make it totally different from other movies. In short, this movie is "real" and sensational. Braff was lucky to have 2 awesome co-stars in this movie. Natalie Portman as Sam is excellent and it's so easy to fall in love with her. Peter Sarsgaard is also brilliant as an old friend of Braff's character. I have no idea why it's taken me so long to watch this movie but I'm glad I did. Overall, a very good movie about life and about young people who aren't sure what to do with their lives. Recommended.

For the Love of Ada

For the Love of Ada
The spinoff movie from the now largely forgotten early 70's ITV sitcom about 2 elderly people falling in love and marrying each other. The plot revolves around Walter and Ada's first wedding anniversary with a secret party planned without them knowing. A calamity of disasters happen to Walter when his present to Ada goes missing a couple of times. This is a very gentle comedy movie with a flimsy plot which is stretched to the limit during it's running time. As is customary to movies based on British 70's sitcoms there has to be a bit of smut involved and this one has a nymphomaniac hairdresser Sandra being all suggestive to a man. To be honest there's not a lot of laughs to be had here unless seeing a load of pensioners being a little bit drunk and having a knees-up is funny. The regulars in Irene Handl and Wilfred Pickles do the best they can with the script alongside Jack Smethhurst (of Love Thy Neighbour fame) and Arthur English. Maybe there's a reason this sitcom isn't fondly remembered (i.e not funny enough). Might be worth taking a look if you want to be nostalgic about the golden age of British sitcoms in the 70's.

Shot in black & white, arranged in non-chronological order, and evidently influenced by a Roman Polanski movie, the story finds a woman looking after an apartment for it's owner even though she's been warned that it may be haunted and the previous caretaker committed suicide. Once there, the young woman (who is unnamed) starts to lose her grip on reality and goes mad. The director tries to be clever by sporadically cutting to maniacal frames, screeching noises for its score & mindless meandering but it's only trying to hide the paper thin plot on display. Lauren Ashley Carter gives a decent performance and it's a shame she didn't better material to work with. In the end this movie is a bit of a mess thanks to the director trying to be overambitious and obviously copying something. Not worth bothering with really.

David Essex is the 50's young rebel Jim MacLaine. Due to his father abandoning the family when he was a child, he grows up not caring for a proper career and moves from job to job bedding various women along the way. His ultimate dream though is to be a famous rock n roll star like Elvis Presley. The movie perfectly captures the staid, constraint and carefree days of Britain in the 1950's. The story is apparently loosely based on John Lennon's actual early exploits. It's got an amazing soundtrack to the times and a fantastic cast with Ringo Starr, Keith Moon and Billy Fury amongst others appearing. David Essex is good as MacLaine. The ending sets the scene for the follow up movie called Stardust. A great but largely forgotten movie and one which should not be passed up if given the chance to watch.

This is a found footage mockumentary set in the 70's about a woman with psychic abilities who is then possessed by an evil spirit after experiments are done at a top secret government lab. For what was supposed to be a scary movie I can tell you that it wasn't frightening at all. The movie is a mix of talking to participants that was involved in the experiments during the present day and actual footage of what took place. The main problem is nothing works here to create some interesting story or mood. The acting isn't very good and the lead culprit is the woman possessed. Overall it was a rather boring movie and one that will be very quickly forgotten. Don't waste your time on it.

Racing Extinction
A powerful and thought provoking documentary that gives a special message to everybody on the planet - that it we don't stop abusing the world we live in, it's possible if we carry on the way we do that 50% of the species that exist could become extinct in less than 50 years time. It paints a bleak picture which doesn't bode well for us as human beings either. With magnificent footage of nature and animals and devastating footage of the destruction of nature, this documentary does a brilliant job blending the beauty and the loss of the natural world with the solutions to preserving it. It also follows several activists as it tries to save endangered species from ending up on the food table or as medicine in Asia. No matter how you look at it, the natural world is in serious trouble and we are to blame for it. This is a must see documentary that should be shown in schools everywhere. The clock is ticking down but it's not too late to save ourselves and the world around us.

Sleep Tight
A brilliant Spanish psychological thriller about a creepy looking concierge who drugs an attractive woman in her own apartment every night so that he can sleep with her. It makes for an unsettling experience as it plays on the small fears that people have, having someone bluntly invade your privacy without you knowing it. The story is original and clever and the acting is spot on especially by Luis Tosar who plays the concierge. This movie takes the viewer to the darker places of their emotions and thoughts, but not in an obvious blunt way like most horror movies, but in a deceptive and clever way. There are some deeply unforgettable moments that will stay with you for a while. An effective and uneasy movie that far excels anything Hollywood could offer these days. Don't miss out on it.

...And the Band Played On

...And the Band Played On
This was the precursor movie to the shortlived ITV series The Shillingbury Tales. It harks back to the cosy Sunday night drama that started with All Creatures Great & Small and later with The Darling Buds Of May. The storyline revolves around a small idyllic village in England with a famous pop star coming to live there and taking over conducting the brass band which is full of old people. They play absolutely terrible together. One of the band members asks the others to sabotage the way they usually play but in actuality it makes them sound even better and more unique! The cast is led by Robin Nedwell (best known for being in the various Doctor comedy series of the 70's) and Trevor Howard. Comedian Jack Douglas plays a serious role for a change. The movie was filmed on location in the beautiful village of Albury in Hertfordshire and some of the shots are breathtaking. I've no idea if the place still looks the same now as it did then as it's what I would call the quintessential English village. If you love quaint and gentle English comedy dramas you're bound to love this.

A Japanese movie that totally scrambles your brain. Set in the 1920's, it's a story about a young man, Ichiro Kure, who wakes up in an asylum cell with no memory of who he is or how he got there but apparently he killed his bride to be the night before their wedding. Two doctors at the asylum connect his problem to his Chinese ancestor who killed his wife and painted her decomposing body in exactly the same way. It's hard to know what exactly is going on in this movie. Is Ichiro imagining everything in his brain or are they fragments of his memory? The movie started out quite interesting but gets dull quite quickly as there's a lot of overlong talking going on with not that much happening. A person who has the patience might like it as the storyline offers a piece of the puzzle one at a time but not for the viewer to solve things but rather to watch it all play out. It seems that the two doctors are using Ichiro as a pawn. My interest in this movie was long gone before the end credits because there's no real structure to the story. I didn't really like this at all and unless you're a fan of mindfuck movies you won't too.

Ikiterumono wa inainoka
Students and faculty members at Jinsai Medical University become inflicted with a mysterious disease that kills its victims instantly. After a 9 year break, director Sogo Ishii returned in 2012 with this baffling and painfully dull comedy horror movie. It starts out boring following a group of people (mostly students) talking about urban myths and possibly something being hidden in a basement room before one by one they start dying in mysterious circumstances. Now normally you'd think this movie would then have somebody trying to get to the bottom of this outbreak but it doesn't. The characters are all odd and strangely enough don't want to be left out if the rest are dying. I'm not sure what kind of comedy horror this was supposed to be but it sure isn't a laugh out loud one! To be honest I couldn't wait for this movie to finish. There was nothing in it for me. It's basically just about a group of uninteresting people that die. A waste of nearly 2 hours of my time.
