Flesh-Eating Mothers
A venereal disease turns an entire town of two-timing mothers into cannibals! Gore-hounds should get a kick out of this horror parody in which cannibalistic mothers run rampage around town. The arm and leg chewing sequences are done really well despite the low budget. Children and even a baby are eaten by their mothers but the funniest scene has a pair of the mothers ripping a cat in half after arguing who gets to eat it! Yes, the acting is poor but I think that's the way it's supposed to be. I can't say there was too many laughs to be had from the movie either. It's OK I suppose but nothing special.

Shock Treatment
Janet and Brad Majors, unhappily married, are separated after appearing on a game show. Janet becomes a superstar while Brad is thrown into a mental hospital. But what does fast food magnate Farley Flavors have up his sleeve? The follow-up to The Rocky Horror Picture Show by Richard O'Brien may not be quite as good as it but it's still a lot of fun. Some of the regulars return in different roles, however, the tongue in cheek humour and craziness of Rocky Horror gives way to a movie that tries to be a bit too bizarre for it's own good. The plot really doesn't matter, and nor should it. Some of the songs are really decent. As for the leads, Cliff DeYoung is underused as Brad and Jessica Harper as Janet is fantastic and has a great singing voice. Don't listen to those that say this movie is really bad - it definitely isn't. Give it a go especially if you loved Rocky Horror.

Can a squad of misfit cheerleaders with an over-age trainer possibly win the big cheerleading competition? A terrible 80's teen sex comedy which deserves an F grade for crappiness. If you're expecting this to be up there with the likes of Porky's or Meatballs, you'll be sadly disappointed. It doesn't even come close to them. Fair enough if you enjoy watching lengthy cheerleading displays as you might get something out of it but for a so-called comedy the humour is sadly lacking. The acting is the worst you'll ever see. Simply awful, lame and forgettable.

Go Tell the Spartans
It is the early stages of the Vietnam War and a group of American military advisors led by Major Asa Barker have to defend a tiny village called Muc Wa from a large force of Viet Cong. Burt Lancaster turns in a fine performance as Major Asa Barker who has doubts about the wisdom of the war America is about to embark upon. The timescale is set before the conflict in Vietnam was thoroughly Americanised. It is not your typical glossy, overproduced Hollywood action extravaganza nor is it overly laden with patriotic sentimentality. It is, rather, a compelling exploration of the hubris and naivete that shaped the American war effort. The action scenes are competently done and the directing by Ted Post is good. When you've already seen all the other 70's and 80's Vietnam war movies, this one might be worth a watch for you.

Back in Action (1993)
Two men have different motivations but the same goal when they team up and mount an assault on a powerful drug gang. The inventor of Tae-Bo in Billy Blanks teams up with 'Hot Rod' Rowdy Roddy Piper in this mindless action flick. Some movies will boast that you are about to see some "non-stop action" but in this case it's actually completely accurate. Whenever Blanks is on the screen he is beating somebody senseless. Piper gets his share of the action as well but it's really Billy Blanks' martial arts prowess on display here. The man can't act but it doesn't really matter. Piper is actually better in doing that. This has everything you would expect in a cheesy action movie; explosions, martial arts, beautiful women and guns with unlimited ammo. It's one of those movies you can turn your brain off and just enjoy what takes place onscreen.

First Man Into Space
The first pilot to leave Earth’s atmosphere parachutes back to Earth after hitting some cosmic rays from a meteorite, but he's vanished; all the while something with a craving for blood prowls the countryside. A monster/sci-fi movie with special effects-laden and a lot of stock-footage, dealing with an astronaut falling to Earth, being plastered with metallic meteor dust and with a starving organism needing to feed, along the way an alien tries to survive and begins killing in order to get it. Despite the low budget of this movie, it has an original and eerie story with suspense, tension and horror. The monster suit is well made and is quite memorable. Great acting from all the cast. It's a solid piece of entertainment from start to finish.

Flavia the Heretic
After the Tarantula cult besieges her convent, a young nun goes with an army of Muslims to destroy the convent and kill those who wronged her which includes her cruel father. A nasty Italian nunsploitation movie with a very bleak storyline. It's very well shot, created and acted with Florinda Bolkan performing well in the lead role. There seems to be a lot of time and effort went into the sets, costumes, cinematography, lighting. Animal lovers should not watch as there is an outrageous and horrible horse castration scene (some people have said this was real). There are also other brutal and sleazy scenes which is what you want from an exploitation movie but it also delivers a feminist and anti-religion message. If your stomach can take it, you might get something out of this movie.

An Australian cop called Stoner heads to Hong Kong to head off the supply of a new designer drug which raises the sexual appetite of anyone who takes it. A really bad martial arts/action movie with George Lazenby sharing top bill with Angela Mao. Golden Harvest more or less produced some lively action movies but this one is a stinker. Sure, there are fights galore but when you have Lazenby just swinging his arms around and the bad guys fall to the floor then you know it's not good. Sammo Hung even gets a role as a thug and gets his ass kicked by Lazenby - how humiliating! As for Lazenby's acting, he's as wooden as ever and isn't cut out for the role in the movie. Angela Mao is probably the only one that comes out shining here. A very disappointing HK movie.

A horror movie festival, held in a theatre which was once the scene of a tragic fire, turns into a real life horror show. This is a movie made for fans of horror movies, especially classical 50's b-horror made with love for the genre and for the entire grindhouse subculture. It's fun to watch the horror-thon filled with gimmicks à la William Castle in a beautiful and crowded vintage theatre. The plot is as corny as those of the old b-movies being presented. The characters are clichés, the development is predictable and the practical effects are cheap but that's what it's supposed to be and it works well. In the end, this is a wacky love letter to the grindhouse cinema that evokes nostalgia even in those who weren't alive during its golden age.

Ha Yoon-ju becomes the newest member to a unit within the Korean Police Forces Special Crime Department that specialises in surveillance activities on high profile criminals. She teams up with Hwang Sang-Jun, the veteran leader of the unit, and tries to track down the cold-hearted leader of an armed criminal organisation who is robbing banks. This is a super-charged action thriller, with a few big car chases but far more chases on foot, which tend to create much more tension in the viewer as you never know if the main villain is going to be caught. Aside from the high stakes in the movie, the city of Seoul itself becomes a character, as Detective Hwang and his team with animal codenames use CCTV, computer triangulation and good old maps and feet on the ground to discover, and then track, the movements of various bad guys. For such a high-octane movie, there's not a massive amount of blood spilled here, although there is some. This is a fast-paced thriller which will keep the audience on the edge of their seats from start to finish. I was surprised to see a tiny cameo from HK star Simon Yam right at the end but apparently this movie is similar if not a direct copy of his called Eye In The Sky. All in all, this is a fantastic movie to watch.

A model named Barbara Hallen has disappeared and her father gets private detective Sam Morgan to go to Paris to find his daughter. Barbara’s trail leads Morgan to a plastic surgery clinic owned by Dr. Flamand. Morgan’s investigation reveals the horrifying secret behind the Doctor’s miracle cures which is blood and organs taken from kidnapped young women. As Morgan’s investigation closes witnesses are eliminated one by one, each in a more horrible way. This is a hyper sexualised nightmare of absurd violence, shady surgical experiments, secret laboratories, and an onslaught of madness and depravity. All captured within a swanky 80's backdrop that delivers endless sleaze and dramatics. An array of practical FX and gore are on display with facial acid burns, needles in eyes, dismembered corpses, throat stabbings and some gnarly medical procedures. The cast which includes Telly Savalas and Caroline Munro are fine in their roles. You know what to expect with Jess Franco as director and this is no different to his other movies. Gorehounds should enjoy this.

The Objective
In Afghanistan, a team of US Special Ops forces is dispatched with the ostensible orders of locating an influential Muslim cleric. While on the mission they find themselves lost in a Middle Eastern ‘Bermuda Triangle’ of ancient evil and faced with an enemy that none of them could have imagined. This could have been an intriguing little picture from Daniel Myrick, one of the directors behind Blair Witch Project, and it's going for the same sort of vibe, albeit with a completely different setting and set-up. However, absolutely nothing great happens throughout the movie. The Moroccan locations look fantastic and there's quite a bit of suspense built up along the way, along with one or two action scenes. The movie also suffers from a lack of good characterisation; the characters are all one-dimensional stereotypes, from the superstitious Arab who acts as their guide to the tough sergeant and usual foul-mouth military types. I was expecting this movie to be good but in the end it was poor.

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit
14 years after making a movie about his journey across the USA, Borat risks life and limb when he returns to America with his young daughter, and reveals more about the American culture, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the political elections. Borat, the Kazakhstani journalist is back and this time he's got his young daughter in the USA with him. This sequel might not be as good as the first but still delivers plenty of laughs and outrageous moments. It was always going to be difficult for Sacha Baron Cohen to replicate the stuff he did before as people recognise the character all over the world now but I think he pulled it off very well. Maria Bakalova is fantastic and steals the movie as Tutar, Borat's daughter. Wild, controversial, crude as ever and unapologetically hilarious, Sacha Baron Cohen shows what a comedic genius he is. Well worth watching.
