The Young Poisoner
Graham Young is a teenage misfit living in suburban London in the 1960s. He hates his stepmother but loves chemistry, and the two impulses unite in a wicked plot to slowly poison her. After she dies, he's found guilty and sent to a psychiatric hospital, where an idealistic doctor thinks he can be cured. Upon release, Graham finds a job, but struggles to fight back his old urges for murder. Based on a true story, this is a great movie with director Benjamin Ross doing a terrific job creating a humorously warped view of life through the eyes of Graham Young, alienated boy genius and serial poisoner. Hugh O'Conor perfectly portrays Graham's carefully studied innocent appearance, which Graham constantly feigns lest anyone find out what he is really thinking in his twisted, calculating mind. O'Conor manages the tricky job of looking innocent enough to fool the other characters, but maniacal enough that the audience always knows what is going on. There are some gruesome scenes of people reacting to poison, but these are necessary to heighten the viewer's horror at Graham's incapability to assess his own actions and to recognize his own evil. Overall, an entertaining, yet twisted, glimpse into a genius gone wrong.

A young photographer is hopelessly in love with a gorgeous model. In order to impress her, he gets involved with a pop promoter to try and make it big and wins her love. I like a good musical but this movie is awful. No doubt a good-looking picture with candy-colour saturated sets and costumes but that's where its appeal ends. It has mostly forgettable songs and not even the great David Bowie can save it. The rushed, often cringe-inducing dialogue, sloppy overdubbing, endless jump-cuts, even the claustrophobic framing are unsettling enough to inspire angst in anyone. The cast are terrible with the worst culprit being Patsy Kensit who shows she can't act at all. Mediocre would be an overstatement for some of the worst/campest/cheesiest acting to ever grace the British big screen.

I Know Where I
Joan, a stubborn English woman, sets out to travel and marry Robert, a wealthy industrialist on the island of Kiloran. On her way, she gets trapped in Mull Island. There, she meets Torquil, and gradually starts to fall for him. This romance movie has lots of Scottish atmosphere so that you can almost feel the cold dampness of the Highlands, the mists, the wind, the raging surf, the cosy inns with their fireplace. Even though seeing this interested me quite a bit, the romantic plot did not grab me one bit despite the good performances of the two leads in Wendy Hiller and Roger Livesey. There's a very brief glimpse of Petula Clark as a precocious young girl with glasses. The film is well shot, presenting the audience with an aesthetically pleasing view of Scotland. If you like old fashioned romance movies, this might interest you.

Nights of Cabiria
A woman, Cabiria, is robbed and left to drown by her boyfriend, Giorgio. Rescued, she resumes her life and tries her best to find happiness in a cynical world. Even when she thinks her struggles are over and she has found happiness and contentment, things may not be what they seem. Federico Fellini's tale about a prostitute named Cabiria is a tale about trying to escape your own life, which has become unbearable. It doesn't help that she always picks the wrong men who screw her over. The movie is a collection of scenes with her as she tries just about everything to break the mold. She tries anger and shouting. She tries friendship. She tries religion. Just about everything. But it all seems to circle around, over and over again. Guilleta Masina is very good in her role. Her Cabiria is a vulnerable little thing, whose bark is just about everything she has. It's also shot well but I still can't say I like the movie because it's quite depressing. Cabiria is a writhing ball of misery, all the people around her are either indifferent or using her for their own gains, and whenever there seems to be hope in sight, it turns out to be false. You come out from watching the movie quite down and of course that's intentional. So overall I can't say this is a masterpiece at all.

Love on the Dole
The Hardcastle family live in Salford, Manchester at the height of the Great Depression. As the depression takes hold, Mr Hardcastle's mine is put on a three-day week and the youngest son Harry becomes unemployed when his apprenticeship ends. The family’s plight is made worse by reductions in their dole money. This great movie gives you an idea on what life was like in the North West in 1930, during the Depression. It resonates with strong feeling for the genuine harshness and brutal truths of poverty and unemployment. While the movie has a gloomy feel, it also has comic relief as well as pathos and there is a heartfelt feeling throughout the different sub plots and avoids over-sentimentality. There are all round good performances especially from a young Deborah Kerr in only her third role who deals with the dilemma of escaping poverty or keep faith with the morality of her class and Lancashire values. Well worth watching.

The Hunter
Veteran bounty hunter Ralph 'Papa' Thorson risks all in bringing bail jumpers to justice, but starts to question what he's done with his life. This was Steve McQueen's last movie role before his untimely death from cancer. The story is based on the exploits of a real life bounty hunter. This movie has pretty much always been critically dismissed (don't know why though?) and, to be sure, it barely has a story line, just a series of incidents, some of them humorous, involved in Thorson's arrest of bail jumpers. There is a major chase sequence towards the end that is excitingly staged, involving a subway car passenger being taken captive, among other things. There's even a little bit of humour to be found here, as well, this prolonged chase sequence the highlight of the movie. Steve McQueen is quite effective in his role as the bounty hunter who lives with his girlfriend in a house full of 10 people!! An enjoyable action/thriller movie with McQueen on top form.

Up the Junction
Wealthy young heiress Polly Dean gives up a privileged life in Chelsea and moves to a working-class community in Battersea, where she takes a job in a confectionery factory in an attempt to distance herself from her rich upbringing and make her own living. A very likeable if dated view of working class 60's London viewed the eyes of rich girl Polly Dean. Several tough and controversial issues (illegal abortions/wife beating) are covered which must have been brave at the time that the movie was made. The characters are well drawn and brought to life with much conviction by a fine cast. Dennis Waterman would soon go on to a distinguished TV career whilst Suzy Kendall's career would stall in the early 70's. Maureen Lipman and the lovely Adrienne Posta make a great team as sisters in the movie. With good use of real-life locations around London, this movie still stands as a reasonably accurate and authentic snapshot of the travails of the working classes, especially women in the mid-to-late 60's.

Little Fauss and Big Halsy
Halsy Knox, a professional motorcycle racer, runs into Little Fauss, an amateur racer, after a race held near Phoenix, Arizona. They strike up a friendship as Fauss is attracted to Halsy's carefree lifestyle. They join forces with Fauss serving as Halsy's mechanic but soon tensions rear it's ugly head when a woman that Fauss has been paying a lot of attention to becomes attracted to Halsy instead. A biking movie that's the complete opposite to Easy Rider. Robert Redford is a real sleaze as Halsy, a drifting biker who travels from race to race and doesn’t allow himself to get tangled up in anything or with anyone. He uses women, manipulates men, steals and lies to put food in his mouth, and sleeps wherever and with whomever that he finds himself each night. It’s unclear if anything he tells anyone in the movie is ever the actual truth or simply what he wants them to hear so he can twist them to his own purpose. It’s a real departure for Redford and later on he said he didn't really like playing the character. Michael J. Pollard as Little Fauss is a young, impressionable motorcyclist who ends up being caught in the wake of Halsy's charisma and comes along for at least part of the ride. They’re drifting, wandering from town to town, with no particular destination in mind. A big plus for this movie is having Johnny Cash sing the soundtrack. The location filming in California's expansive deserts is also great. Robert Redford fans or just those that like dirt bike racing will enjoy this movie.

The Goose Boxer
Goose herder Chin Pao, has an unorthodox master who trains him in Goose Boxing. Chin Pao hones his techniques to do battle against Ghost Hand Chui Lan, who is terrorising the province. This is a very silly martial arts movie. The opening title sequence will show you the goofy humour on display when a goose shits in the hero's face! The slapstick comedy gets on your nerves after a while though the creative fighting is quite decent with Chin Pao even using frog kung fu in the final fight against the evil villain with some help from a midget that was taking a dump in the long grass!! You couldn't write it could you!! The dubbing with the silly voices is hilarious. In the right frame of mind, you'll probably get some laughs out of this movie.

Golden Needles
A priceless ancient Chinese statue is pursued halfway across the world. The legend of the golden statue (which contains seven youth-restoring acupuncture needles) promises the owner health and incredible vigour, but can also deliver a painful death. While Golden Needles may not be as mind numbingly awesome as director Robert Clouse’s best known movie, Enter The Dragon, it’s still a lot of fun. Watching Joe Don Baker make his way through the streets of Hong Kong without looking completely ridiculous is somehow completely entrancing and electricity crackles whenever he and Elizabeth Ashley have scenes together. Jim Kelly doesn’t get nearly enough screen time as an antiques dealer but when he gets a chance to kick some ass he truly shines. Even respected composer Lalo Schifrin does a pretty solid score. It might not be a brilliant movie but it sure as hell is entertaining.

Jaws Of The Dragon
Two crime syndicates lead by Blackbeard and White Tiger fight over a shipment of heroin. Junior, one of Blackbeard's hitmen is sent to retrieve the stolen heroin. A Taiwanese martial arts/action movie that was shot in South Korea and had a mostly Korean supporting cast. It's a movie that strives to have a gritty edge, depicting gang violence and retribution with many good action sequences that come thick and fast. It's hilarious to hear the 007 theme tune being played alongside music from The Man With The Golden Gun and Shaft. I'm sure there is music that have been ripped off from other movies here as well! The plot on the whole is a total mess with various continuity errors but if it's kung fu fights you're after you'll get it in droves in this movie.

Laid to Rest
A woman wakes in casket with memory loss, soon realising she is the victim of a crazed serial killer who wears a chrome skull mask and must fight for her life. This is a predictable slasher with a few gruesome deaths that are actually sort of creative. The movie doesn't even really have a plot, just tries to make a excuse for some blood and gore. I am usually forgiving when it comes to movies like this but the plot holes were just way too noticeable. It never tells or shows why the killer does what he does, he just goes around filming everyone of his kills while wearing a chrome skull mask. It's worth a look for those that like gory kills but otherwise it's just a forgettable bog standard horror.

The Horse
Gulley Jimson is a boorish aging artist recently released from prison. A swindler in search of his next art project, he hunkers down in the penthouse of would-be patrons the Beeders while they go on an extended vacation; he paints a mural on their wall, pawns their valuables and, along with the sculptor Abel, inadvertently smashes a large hole in their floor. Jimson's next project is an even larger wall in an abandoned church. I usually like Alec Guinness comedies but this one I just couldn't get into at all. Perhaps it was the subject of art that made me bored to tears with this movie or the fact that the filmmakers made the mistake of letting Guinness write the script. I didn't find it amusing at all, it never once made me smile. Guinness seems to be straining himself to get into the gruff voice of Gulley Jimson. The only redeeming thing in this movie was the outside photography of London. All in all, it was a very bland movie.

Half a Loaf of Kung Fu
Jiang, a drifter, poses as the man who killed a notorious bandit and claims the prize money. He uses the money to learn kung fu and gets entangled in a conspiracy. This is the movie in which Jackie Chan finally took creative control of his work. It's pretty much typical comedy kung-fu nonsense for an hour; most of it tests the patience, but some of it is funny such as Jackie trying to be Popeye after eating some spinach. This is certainly a fast paced movie with numerous characters; Jackie is a kid who ends up impersonating the Whip Hero, then there are lots of different groups of bad guys who end up getting involved with him. Non-stop kung fu takes place until the very end of the movie, with decent fighting and comedy in between to make it more entertaining – like Jackie trying to learn new moves whilst being beaten pretty badly. Jackie's style for martial arts and comedy was only just starting out in this movie and it is a bit hit and miss. He would improve his style in the next couple of years. Not the best of his early work but it it still quite entertaining to watch.

Lorca and the Outlaws
On the remote mining planet Ordessa, the management uses killer military police androids to crack down on workers upset with the terrible conditions. Lorca and Suzi battle Captain Jowitt and the brutal bounty hunter Danny, with the help of the friendly android Grid. Terrible sci-fi movie. Reading about the plot made it sound like an interesting movie but believe me it isn't. The initial space scenes show promise with entirely reasonable model effects. Within 15 minutes it all goes downhill as the plot stumbles around drunkenly, knocking over shelves. It's a pretty standard "rebels fight against oppressive regime on a dusty mining planet" story but the filmmakers cock it up badly. The droid troopers look like shop mannequins with American football helmets. The cast don't do a good job either. Don't waste your time as I did with this movie.
