Blood Feast
In the sleepy suburbs of Miami, seemingly normal Egyptian immigrant Fuad Ramses runs a successful catering business. He also murders young women and plans to use their body parts to revive the goddess Ishtar. The insane Ramses hypnotises a socialite in order to land a job catering a party for her debutante daughter, Suzette Fremont, and turns the event into an evening of gruesome deaths, bloody dismemberment and ritual sacrifice. This is director HG Lewis' first gore movie and even though there are some memorable scenes of gore, the movie itself is very bad. Many sets looked like they were shot on a local village theatre stage. The dialogue and acting are abysmal. The music is bizarre. It's a contender of sorts for one of the worst movies ever. The gore though is still at times disturbing and I guess that's what gorehounds look for in these kind of movies. Inept rubbish or cult classic - that's up to you to decide.

Shock
A couple is haunted in their new house by the resentful ghost of the woman's former husband, who ends up possessing her young son. This was the last movie that Italian director Mario Bava ever directed. The movie plods along for a little over an hour before it really starts to cook, and then it turns into an authentic Bava movie - heavy on effects, chills, and suspense. There is really very little in the way of a plot, with a storyline quite typical of such horror flicks. The movie is also bolstered by a great performance by Daria Nicolodi who is convinced that her dead husband is out to kill her. It mostly delivers in a knockout finale which is brilliant. Not the best Mario Bava movie you'll see but as his last it's definitely worth taking a look if only for the finale.

Sorry We Missed You
Ricky and his family have been fighting an uphill struggle against debt since the 2008 financial crash. An opportunity to wrestle back some independence appears with a shiny new van and the chance to run a franchise as a self-employed delivery driver. It's hard work, and his wife's job as a carer is no easier. The family unit is strong but when both are pulled in different directions everything comes to breaking point. This is a hard hitting docu-drama by Ken Loach. The movie is intense and hard to watch at times. The way he's shown the living and working conditions of this poor family makes the viewer realise how tough it is to survive in the real world. The amount of sacrifices people have to make in order to keep their family intact. Loach portrays all of this in the most grounded and honest manner. It's hard to believe that the actors in this movie don't work in this field as their main job. That's how terrific all of them were. All of them were believable in their roles and it felt like a real family. Overall this was a tough and heartbreaking movie to watch. It perfectly captures real life struggles with people without feeling forced and the performances were genuine which brought a lot to the characters. Another masterpiece by Ken Loach.

Heart of a Child
Set in 1918 in the lovely Austrian Tyrol, Karl Spiel is devoted to his cuddly St Bernard dog Rudi. He is devastated when he hears that his cruel drunken father is selling his beloved dog to the butchers and sets about hiding the dog from the hands of his father even if it means he'll get badly beaten for it. This is a wonderful and charming family movie similar to the Lassie stories with an excellent lead in young Richard Williams as Karl. His adventures with his dog as he tries to stop his father from selling it will bring a smile to your face. The movie was actually shot in Austria and the picturesque scenery is stunning but what a shame it's only in black and white. It would have been much better in glorious colour. A young Donald Pleasance is quite menacing as Karl's pig of a father and the viewer will no doubt grow to hate him especially when he beats his son up and knocks him unconscious. Thankfully there is a happy ending to it all and you will grow to love the cute dog Rudi. A very entertaining and enjoyable movie.

The Grudge
A detective investigates a murder scene that has a connection to a case that her new partner handled in the past. The killings occurred in a haunted house that passes on a ghostly curse to those who dare enter it. Soon, the curse spreads to a terminally ill woman and her husband, and another unsuspecting couple who were in the wrong place at the wrong time. I'm not really sure what was the point of this movie? It is long past due for Hollywood to stop cashing in on Japanese success and just make their own stories. This 2020 rendering was just fully and wholly unnecessary. And it was a movie that, for me at least, came and went without leaving a lasting mark. Once you get past the pointlessness that permeates the movie, then in all fairness it should be said that they had a pretty nice cast ensemble for the movie, and the CGI effects were pretty good. This is a movie that thrives and attempts to get by on a heap of jump scares, sadly you see them coming a mile away. Sadly, I wouldn't bother with this movie - it's mediocre in terms of script, story and entertainment.

In the year 2050, the Killgis aliens arrive on Earth and attack, leaving 96% of the worldโ€™s population dead. Among the survivors, the Kasuga family time travel back to the present to meet Ken Kurenai and his older brother Kenichiro, who are the only ones capable of preventing that future from happening. Armed with the technology the aliens used to create the massive Black Baron robot, they set about creating a similar giant robot, the Red Baron, to fight back against the invaders. This is a reboot/crossover of 2 tokusatsu shows from the 70's namely Silver Mask and Super Robot Red Baron. To be perfectly honest I'd never heard of either of them. Armed with familiar stories of redemption, courage and family strife that is usually apparent in such Japanese fantasy fare, the movie offers a chance to see how both of these old time shows combine to create this new movie. It's not the great action fest I was expecting and the heavy CGI used in the movie is quite poor at times. This movie is basically just an introduction to this new franchise as right at the end another new robot turns up and it ends on a cliffhanger. The 2nd part is supposed to come out sometime in 2020. For tokusatsu fans familiar with both of the 70's shows, you might well enjoy this reboot. All in all, it's not terrible or anything, it's just not something I'd recommend. Perhaps the next installment will be better?

First Love
One night in Tokyo, a self-confident young boxer and a prostitute get caught up in a drug-smuggling plot involving organised crime, corrupt cops and a female assassin. This fantastic movie goes back to Takashi Miike's brutal V-Cinema Yakuza movies between the mid 90's and the early years of the new millennium. Miike's fans will love it as it is so much fun. The characters are diversified, eccentric and unique enough to keep your eyes glued to the screen. The flashy locations are gorgeous to watch. The action scenes are intense and especially the lengthy fight sequences in a warehouse mix gore elements with black slapstick humour in a typically Japanese way. It's not perfect though as the opening quarter is a little bit dragging and slightly overstays its welcome. The story is somewhat predictable if you're familiar with other Yakuza movies. Still, First Love is an entertaining Yakuza movie that goes back to the genre's golden era in the mid 90's. It features action, drama, thriller elements and is explicitly brutal and darkly humorous. I loved it!

The Green Berets

Colonel Kirby is posted to South Vietnam with two handpicked A-Teams of Special Forces troopers. His top secret mission is to kidnap a very important North Vietnamese field commander named General Pha Son Ti in North Vietnam. The capture of General Ti is seen as a bargaining chip to end the war on South Vietnam's terms, as well as disrupting the leadership of the Viet Cong. This movie was John Wayne's attempt to sell the Vietnam War to the American People. This was the subject of great criticism at the time. He wanted to make a patriotic statement of support for the Armed Forces at a time of rising opposition to the Vietnam War. The movie was bashed by many people but it did well at the US box office. I don't think it's a very good war movie to be honest. The movie is too long, the direction (John Wayne co-directed) is pedestrian, and the editing is lethargic. The action scenes are good though and are the highlights of the movie. John Wayne played his normal tough-on-the-outside-but very human-on-the- inside role, which he so often did in his Westerns. I might have liked it more if a good 45 mins or so had been cut to make it flow better but overall I can only say it's an average movie in the end.

Murder Ahoy (1964)
To investigate the murder of one of her fellow trustees of a fund which rehabilitates young criminals, Miss Marple goes aboard the sailing ship used to train the juveniles. The last in the series and probably the weakest out of the four Miss Marple comedy drama movies. It really felt as if the writers had run out of ideas as the plot creaks along and none of it makes much sense. Margaret Rutherford, as usual, has a great time and her sidekick Stringer Davis (her real-life husband) appears a little stronger in his role. Lionel Jeffries hams it up as the frustrated captain of the ship who views Miss Marple as his own personal albatross. A shame the series went out with a whimper. Essential viewing though for those that have watched the previous 3 movies.

Who Killed the Cat?

Who Killed the Cat?
Three elderly spinsters become amateur detectives when someone poisons their beloved cat. The three determine the cat was poisoned by their mean old landlady and with an eye for an eye attitude, they determine to have their revenge. The three plan to murder the landlady, but fate has other ideas and takes a hand in matters. This is a slow burning murder mystery that keeps you guessing till the end. Perhaps the final reveal is a bit quick so you need to pay attention. As usual there are plenty of possible murder suspects to choose from, or perhaps it's even suicide. The movie is based on a play written by none other than Arnold Ridley (Private Godfrey from Dad's Army). The plot rattles along at a good pace and it never outstays it's welcome. Well worth watching if you like murder mysteries.

So Long at the Fair
Vicky takes her brother on a trip to the 1889 Paris Exhibition. Both of them stay in separate rooms in a hotel. Next day, she is stunned to find out that her brother has disappeared and that the hotel staff deny that they have ever seen him. This is a classic mystery thriller that's rarely seen but those that have seem to love it. Co-directed by future Hammer director Terence Fisher, the movie grows more and more sinister with each turn as the lovely Jean Simmons (just 21 years old at the time) desperately tries to convince someone that her brother did exist. The first half of the movie is the most atmospheric as Simmons' character Vicky is a stranger in a strange land, her fraught helplessness over her missing brother is enhanced by the language problems. This aspect impacts on the viewer by there not being any subtitles for the French speaking parts of the script which was a good move on the filmmakers. Once Vicky teams up with Dirk Bogarde's George the thriller suspense gives way to detective mystery, which is fine, and for sure the "reveal" that comes in the finale is credible, but it's a shame the movie didn't stay in "darker" mode. All in all, it's a classy little mystery, boosted by some prime British acting talent at the time. Definitely one to have a look.

When William Egerton emerges from a lengthy period of amnesia, he finds himself in a hotel in Wales. A psychiatrist helps him to start piecing his life back together. This movie is supposed to be a comedy but there is no funny dialogue or even any funny scenes. There is just a lot of embarrassment which is supposed to be terribly amusing but with a weak script that is to be expected. The cast try and make do with what they can. I was just bored watching this and it dragged to it's inevitable conclusion. Some might like it for Rex Harrison's performance but for myself it was more or less a complete waste of time.
